Hurricane Harvey victims who escaped rising floodwaters are now returning home to examine the destruction.
In the week since Harvey made landfall, thousands of residents in Texas and Louisiana found refuge in shelters across the states. Floodwaters overtook entire neighborhoods, damaging at least 49,000 homes in Texas, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. In all, some 785,000 people were part of mandatory evacuations in Texas and Lousiana, and more than 200,000 homes are still without power. Officials are now allowing a portion of evacuees to return to their properties, and the process of rebuilding their homes, and their lives, begins.

ABC’s “The View” has named Sarah de la O as its new director, replacing Ashley S. Gorman in the job. With the hiring, De la O perhaps surprisingly becomes the show’s first-ever female director. Gorman, who left early last month, is male. Executive Producer Bill Wolff, a veteran of “Rachel Maddow” who this season replaced Barbara Walters’ producing partner Bill Geddie, is staying with the program, which is entering its 19th season in September. “We are very excited to have Sarah join the show,” Wolff said. “She has an excellent eye and a keen understanding of both visual presentation and editorial content.

Rosie Perez is officially leaving The View next month, the show's executive producer Bill Wolff announced on Monday. Perez joined the show as a regular co-host last September but took a monthlong hiatus in January to rehearse for Larry David's Broadway play Fish in the Dark, in which she currently co-stars. She's now permanently leaving the show to "pursue full time her love for acting." Her last show will be August 6, when The View wraps up its current season. But Perez's exit could be the first of even more major changes coming to The View after the addition of Raven-Symoné as a regular co-host last month. Variety reports that ABC might also cut co-host Nicolle Wallace in favor of having a rotating schedule of guest panelists to weigh in on hot-button issues alongside regular co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg and Raven. Previous co-host Rosie O'Donnell quit the show back in February.

The most striking thing about Thursday's episode of the "Today" show may have been what you didn't see: No empty chair where Natalie Morales usually sits (she was there, calmly reading the news, as usual), and no other sign of the backstage turmoil that has engulfed the venerable morning news show this week, which had threatened the jobs of correspondents Morales and Willie Geist and has already claimed the job of the new producer brought in just a few weeks ago to fix the troubled show.
Despite the placid surface, it's clear that there is still trouble brewing at "Today," a creative and corporate struggle that is not likely to end soon. And the stakes are high, involving big money, big names, and big egos.
After all, "Today" is easily the most lucrative program overseen by NBC News -- maybe even the most profitable show on the network, period. But...
