It’s the New York Yankees story they didn’t want you to know about. Before the team’s dynasty was rebuilt they first had to endure the debacle that was the scandal-packed 1990 season. This turbulent chapter in the franchise’s history is examined in new Peacock docuseries Bronx Zoo ‘90: Crime, Chaos and Baseball. Most of what was making headlines happened off the field. Long-time skipper Billy Martin had died in a car crash, leading to a rotating door within management. George Steinbrenner was banned from baseball after enlisting the help of a gambler named Howard Spira to dig up dirt on one of his star players, Dave Winfield. Outfielder Mel Hall was arrested for bringing real-life cougars to the clubhouse. Around the same time, Hall entered into a relationship with a teenager and would ultimately face three counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child. He was sentenced to 45 years in prison.

"This is insane! It really was the Bronx Zoo!" Another look back documentary heading to streaming soon. Peacock has revealed an official trailer for a documentary series titled Bronx Zoo '90: Crime, Chaos & Baseball, which is a real mouthful title for this sports history mini-series. It's about the 1990 New York Yankees, which not only was one of the worst years in Yankees history, but one of the most controversial with all kinds of problems with players, management, and beyond. Now that title makes sense! Based on a series of articles from New York Post columnist Joel Sherman, this docu series covers team owner George Steinbrenner’s removal from baseball for trying to buy info on Dave Winfield, and every other mishap and incident. Series interviews include Don Mattingly, Steve Sax, Dave Lapoint, Kevin Maas, Jim Leyritz, Jesse Barfield, former Yankees manager Buck Showalter, Yankees' announcer Michael Kay, Brian Cashman,...

It’s a zoo out there. In 1990, the New York Yankees were a disaster; these were not the Derek Jeter years.
With a 67-95 record, 1990 was the first time in 24 years the Bronx Bombers finished in last place in the division, a whopping 21 games behind the rival the Boston Red Sox. It was the team’s worst record since 1912, two years before Babe Ruth even entered Major League Baseball (and eight years before he joined the Yankees). How bad were the 1990 Yankees? They threw a no-hitter and lost.
A new docuseries coming soon to Peacock, “Bronx Zoo ’90: Crime, Chaos, and Baseball,” gives the abysmal season a “The Last Dance” spin, covering both the drama on the field and off. Like what? Well, there was the time when Yankee owner George Steinbrenner paid a notorious gambler to dig up dirt on superstar player Dave Winfield. That gambler is interviewed in...

The last two episodes of the new series about the iconic New York Yankee Derek Jeter is now available to stream online. “The Captain” arrived on ESPN+ last month with new episodes airing on a weekly basis.
The docuseries, directed by Randy Wilkins and executive produced by Spike Lee and Mike Tollin, features dozens of intimate interviews with Jeter, alongside those in the athlete’s inner circle, such as his parents Dorothy and Dr. Charles Jeter, his sister Sharlee Jeter and his wife Hannah Jeter. Alex Rodriguez, Daryl Strawberry, Jorge Posada, Mariano Rivera, manager Joe Torre and Dave Winfield also make appearances.
Through these conversations, viewers learn more about Jeter’s meteoric rise to success and the particular hurdles Jeter had to jump over as a biracial athlete. One revealing conversation with his family underscores how Jeter had to “work twice as hard” to reach his goals, even while journalists refused to acknowledge these setbacks,...

Deep into the fifth episode of “The Captain,” ESPN’s new docuseries acknowledges the difficulty of cracking its chosen subject. Derek Jeter might’ve been a stellar shortstop, and an iconic Yankees player whose meteoric rise and waning career mirrored his team’s own trajectory as a New York sports dynasty. But he is also, according to both himself and the many frustrated journalists who couldn’t get past his surface, an extremely careful (read: boring) interview.
“That’s by design,” Jeter confirms on camera, letting loose a genuine grin at the admission. He even goes on to say that “there are things I still won’t talk about” here, now, for the supposedly in-depth docuseries about his own life (which premieres July 18 after the Home Run Derby and will run seven episodes in total). That contradiction lies at the heart of Randy Wilkins’ “The Captain,” which can generally only...

As Major League Baseball pauses for the All-Star Break, let’s break to talk about an All-Star for the ages, fireballer Nolan Ryan.
The Hall of Fame pitcher holds a number of records that many experts believe will never be broken, including seven career no hitters and 5,714 total strikeouts, almost a thousand more than the guy at number two on that rarified list—Randy Johnson.
Ryan’s incredible accomplishments are detailed in the documentary Facing Nolan, directed by Bradley Jackson, which debuts on digital platforms next Tuesday. The film premiered at the SXSW Film Festival in March in Ryan’s home state of Texas, and has gone on to earn about half a million dollars in theatrical release.
It may be appropriate that when Jackson first proposed the documentary to Ryan (if you’ll pardon the baseball metaphor) he struck out.

"Without a doubt, he was the most intimidating pitcher in the history of the game." Utopia has revealed an official trailer for a sports biopic documentary titled Facing Nolan, profiling the baseball legend Nolan Ryan. This already premiered at the 2022 SXSW Film Festival last month, and will show in theaters on May 24th for a special event. In November 1990, Alexia Norton Jones went on a date with Russell Simmons. She recalls that they had a pleasant night out, which ended with the co-founder of Def Jam Recordings inviting her to see his new apartment in downtown Manhattan. There, Jones says, Simmons pinned her against a wall and raped her. “It was such a fast attack,” she told Variety. “He pulled my dress up. I must have said no seven to 10 times.”
After she left, distraught and in shock, Jones claims that Simmons continued to pursue her, calling her at home and approaching her at social events. Jones, a 31-year-old aspiring model and actress at the time (she is the granddaughter of late book publisher W.W. Norton), was in the same social circle as Simmons. And Simmons was a friend of Jones’ father, Clarence Jones, who had served as an attorney and speechwriter for Martin Luther King Jr.

We're headed towards unknown waters, sports fans; for the first time ever (?) the country will possibly be staring at its two highest profile professional sports leagues (I don't count Nascar until they start loading .50-cal machine guns on the hood) locked out. Trying to disseminate what is bullpucky and what is financial reality has little bearing on us, the consumer. However, there's been an exceptional amount of progress on the NFL front; by the end of Friday, we may have the
framework in place for an agreement. The incentive is now even greater for the NFL to beat the NBA by getting back to business, even if that means skipping most of the preseason to usher out-of-shape behemoths onto the field in an asthmatic overture of pulled groin muscles and strained hamstrings. Knock on wood, let's get this one done boys.
