Rush Limbaugh will leave major Am radio stations in Los Angeles and San Francisco in order to help anchor some lesser-known channels in those markets that will be rebranded as conservative talk, people familiar with the plans from Clear Channel Media and Entertainment said Thursday. The strategy could leave some left-wing talkers, such as Stephanie Miller, Bill Press and Thom Hartmann, without a home in a couple of very large, liberal-skewing markets. In Los Angeles, Limbaugh's top-rated show will no longer be heard on Kfi Am 640 beginning on Jan. 2 and instead be on Ktlk

Fox News Channel host Bill O'Reilly appeared on CBS' 60 Minutes on Sunday night to promote his new book and discuss his background, history, and media empire. O’Reilly called himself a “little thug” in high school who now gets paid to be a “big thug.” “What a total ass,” liberal radio host Bill Press said after listening to that clip.

Currently in a rebuilding phase after a precipitous slide from its former dominance of the cable-news world, CNN has been adding new on-air talent, such as former ABC News correspondent Jake Tapper, and is also reaching back into its past.
Last week, CNN revived the current-events/debate program "Crossfire," blending a long-running format with a roster of new faces. The daily 30-minute show features two hosts and guests each night, with the co-hosts also appearing across other CNN programming.
From 1982 until 2005, "Crossfire" was a mainstay of the network's daytime lineup, examining the news from the points of view of a politically liberal and a conservative pundit.
The first pairing was journalist and author Tom Braden ("Eight Is Enough") on the liberal side, and commentator, politician and broadcaster Pat Buchanan, as the conservative.

With a name like Zooey Deschanel, chances are the actress has suffered her fair share of mix-ups and mispronunciations - but nothing like quite like this. While the second suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings was being pursued by investigators during a manhunt on Friday, Dallas-Fort Worth's Fox 4 had a closed caption fail for the record books. As a news anchor read aloud the name of 19-year-old suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, closed captioning on screen read, "He is 19-year-old Zooey Deschanel." Peter Ogburn, a producer for The Bill Press Show, was one of the first to pick up on the error.

The first roadblock former congressman Anthony Weiner will have to overcome in a potential run for mayor of New York City is getting enough support and forgiveness from Democrats to have any chance of making a comeback. Well, Weiner has finally racked up an endorsement from one of his ex-colleagues: Minnesota congressman Keith Ellison. On Current TV earlier today, Ellison told host Bill Press that in spite of Weiner's very public scandal two years ago, "nobody here is perfect," and he said that he would be happy to back him for mayor.

Today might just be my proudest day as a cable news consumer. Despite Politico editor Jim VandeHei's prediction that "cable TV is not going to be able to resist the incendiary things that Ted Nugent" would say after Tuesday night's State of the Union Address, the cable news networks have, so far, maintained a near-blockade on Nugent clips, and according to Bill Press, wasn't featured in any of the crowd shots from the speech. The only exceptions, so far, have been CNN and MSNBC, who each aired Nugent snippets during the 5 am hour Wednesday morning, one of which, naturally, contained the word "fecal."...

Yes! Comedy Central has ordered a third season of the amazing Key & Peele. I just wish Comedy Central would do something to guarantee that we have Luther, President Obama's anger translator for the next four years. At this point Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert aren't enough comedy power to make up for the combined awfulness of today's Gop.
I cringed a little when I saw out host Stephanie Miller in a spot asking viewers to give to the Salvation Army (she and fellow Current host Bill Press are competing to raise more money). Then I read that Miller interviewed Major George Hood of the Salvation Army on her show and let him dismiss the organization's anti-gay history without challenge and it made me really sad. John Aravosis of AmericaBlog has collected stories that illustrate why the organization has an anti-gay reputation.

The news of Keith Olbermann's exit from Current is just a few hours old, yet I am not shocked by what may or may not have happened. One thing seems sure at this point: It was a mutual agreement by both parties.
Television is a nasty, complicated, tension-filled, egocentric business. What you see on the screen comes from endless hours of careful planning, politicking and gallons of caffeine. Doing a nightly show is like being stuck on a treadmill going 10 miles an hour with no off switch. In the best of times, things run smoothly with an occasional bump here and there. Other times it can seem like falling down a bottomless well. You need all the support from your network and studio to get you through the slog.
Keith Olbermann is a gifted journalist and broadcaster, with a deep respect for those who blazed a trail in broadcast news before him.

Al Sharpton continues to increase his presence on MSNBC, and last night, filling in as guest host for the The Ed Show, he moderated a discussion between three liberal commentators (Michael Eric Dyson, Bill Press and Laura Flanders) who took turns bashing the Tea Party and expressing disappointment with the debt deal. Although conservatives like Rush Limbaugh currently dominate talk radio, there are a few liberals, like Bill Press, and Ed Schultz, who have managed to break that stranglehold and maintain a beachhead in the format. Perhaps the best kept secret in progressive talk radio, though, is that Thom Hartmann sits atop the pack, and he does it with a minimum of the antagonism that is de rigeur in today's political media. With a recent move to Washington, DC, and a move into television, is Hartmann poised to break out?...

During a discussion of Glenn Beck's departure from Fox News' air on Sunday's Reliable Sources, progressive radio host Bill Press joined host Howard Kurtz in pushing back against the idea that MSNBC's opinion personalities are somehow equivalent to Beck. While Press and Kurtz were correct in their overall assessment, Press' declaration that MSNBC hosts are "not calling anyone Nazis" is only true because Keith Olbermann is no longer at the network. Oddly, though, Olbermann's record of Nazi references only reinforces the contrast between Beck and MSNBC.

On Sunday's Reliable Sources, liberal radio host Bill Press didn't mince words in discussing Rep. Michele Bachmann's (R-mn) presidential aspirations, calling her a "laughingstock." As the debate over whether or not President Obama is a Muslim has gone away, it has been replaced with the debate over whether or not the form of Christianity that he practices is a mainstream one. One of the biggest proponents of the belief that it is not has been Glenn Beck who has been challenged over his comments from the likes of Bill Press as well as Robert Gibbs. Yesterday on his show, Beck responded to Gibbs.

On his radio program today, loyal Mediaite reader Glenn Beck struck back at attacks on his Mormon faith, even on ones that don't exist. "Bill Press and Tommy Christopher...have written a despicably ignorant article in Mediaite," Beck said, before playing a clip of Press saying "We don’t need a Mormon to teach Christians what the gospels are all about." Beck then follows up his complaint about attacks on his faith by attacking Bill Press' faith. Of course, Press didn't co-write the article in question, and the entire point of that article was that Press should no more attack Glenn Beck's faith than Beck should attack President Obama's. Beck makes several other claims that deserve scrutiny, as well.

On last night's Countdown, syndicated radio host and Toxic Talk author Bill Press took aim at Glenn Beck's August 28 "Restoring Honor" rally, which he has previously likened to an Al-Qaeda rally at Ground Zero. Among the topics discussed were Beck's fundraising tactics, the "desecration" of Dr. Martin Luther King's memory, and, most importantly, Beck's lack of a permit for the event. Bill takes special care to note that the National Park Service is still mulling the request over. There is a trend emerging that seems to indicate a strategic shift at CNN from self-professed neutral, objective journalism to a desire to actively court conservative viewers. First, there was CNN's hiring of Redstate chief Erick Erickson , embedded (and wide-eyed) coverage of the Tea Party Express bus tour, email shot at "the left" to Brent Bozell, and now, their attack on liberal radio host Bill Press for his question to Robert Gibbs about their employee's threat to census workers. NEW YORK -- MSNBC is taking more steps to show people it really is "NBC News on cable" as it shifts some anchor chairs. The network has added anchors and correspondents, including several with NBC News ties, in an effort to beef up its staff in preparation for a possible war in Iraq and to work more closely with its broadcast counterpart. NBC Nightly News weekend anchor John Seigenthaler will anchor the network's morning news block from 9 a.m.-noon ET with MSNBC's Chris Jansing. It has also brought in veteran newsman Forrest Sawyer, who had been doing special reports for MSNBC, to co-anchor the noon-2 p.m. shift with Natalie Morales. Sources close to the network also said that Keith Olbermann, who has been filling in for Nachman over the past two weeks, will anchor a one-hour late afternoon newscast this weekend on MSNBC. The network declined to comment. In other moves, Pat Buchanan and Bill Press, who host the daytime Buchanan & Press show, will analyze Washington events on MSNBC's newly expanded Countdown: Iraq program from 7-9 p.m. ET. MSNBC is adding to its Pentagon coverage with White House reporter Jeannie Ohm and former CNN reporter Carl Rochelle moving over there. MSNBC's Bob Kur replaces Ohm at the White House. MSNBC anchor Christy Musumeci moves to primetime, reading the cut-ins and Sam Shane becomes the network's weekend anchor.
