We first learned that Oyelowo was attached to produce and star in a Rocketeer sequel back in 2021, with plans for him to play a ‘retired Tuskegee airman who takes up the mantle of the Rocketeer’. No director was announced but the news was certainly welcomed.

Fast-forward to 2023 and Oyelowo told TheWrap that “we have forward momentum,” but here we are in 2025 and unfortunately, from the outside looking in, little forward movement on the project seems to have been achieved.

The 3x Golden Globe nominee recently teased their Yoruba Saxon banner’s upcoming adaptation of Tọlá Okogwu’s Onyeka and the Academy of the Sun and their long-gestating Rocketeer sequel, as they navigate “performative” inclusion that came from the Black Lives Matter movement following George Floyd’s death in 2020.

“Onyeka is an absolute bull’s-eye for what we are looking to make, but it is also symptomatic of the challenge we have,” he told the Los Angeles Times. “We gained traction with that project in the wake of the George Floyd murder and in a moment where there was a cultural correction and people seemed to want to do better.”

David continued, “But now we’re in a moment where it’s evident that a lot of that was performative and not bone-deep.

Government Cheese takes an unusual angle on a very well-covered historical moment.

Apple TV+’s surrealist comedy series from creators Paul Hunter and Aeysha Carr is set in the summer of 1969, the tumultuous time of the moon landing, Woodstock, the Manson murders, the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights Movement, etc. But none of that is in the show. Instead, the show is tightly focused on the personal story of the Chambers family, a Black family living in the San Fernando Valley. They’re not so concerned with the tumult of the outside world, because their lives — their jobs, relationships, and their search for God and meaning — are tumultuous enough.

HBO's Lanterns series is still ever-expanding after recently adding Nathan Fillion's Guy Gardner into the fold. Per Deadline, Lawman: Bass Reeves star Chris Coy is now the latest addition to the upcoming Green Lantern drama series in a guest-starring role. He's set to embody a mysterious new character by the name of Waylon Sanders, described as "an intelligent survivor or a nervous truck driver." If that wasn't confusing enough, his real name and age remain an enigma, and he's said to be "unbound by the laws of nature." It's unclear what role he'll play and whether he'll be a friend or a foe to Lantern recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and legend Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler).

Coy boards a group that has grown significantly in recent weeks, with Kelly MacDonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Ulrich Thomsen, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Sherman Augustus, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jason Ritter among those on board thus far.

The series, from Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King, follows new recruit John Stewart (Pierre) and Lantern legend Hal Jordan (Chandler), two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, Earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

Your Friends & Neighbors is an upcoming crime thriller dark comedy-drama series created by Jonathan Tropper. The Apple TV+ series is set in a wealthy community and it follows Andrew Cooper, a recently divorced New York hedge fund manager who becomes unemployed and uses criminal methods to maintain his and his family’s comfortable lifestyle.

As always, Apple TV+ continues to prove that its series are some of the best out there compared to other streaming platforms. While they don’t always offer heaps of shows like other streaming services, they never fail to deliver top-notch viewing experiences. With the season finale of its hit show, Severance, now in the bag, subscribers are undoubtedly looking for something else to sink their teeth into.

Luckily, Apple TV+ has quite a few worthy replacements to tide viewers over for the time being. That being said, it doesn’t look like April offers anything quite as thrilling or unique as the bedrock show. Nevertheless, there’s a lot for audiences to enjoy. Despite extremely poor box office returns, Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s latest superhero movie has become a major hit on streaming. Taylor-Johnson stars alongside Russell Crowe and Christopher Abbott in Kraven the Hunter, the 2024 Sony Marvel film that debuted in December and grossed only $61 million at the global box office against a $110 million budget, making it one of the biggest flops of the year. However, the film recently premiered on Netflix more than two weeks ago, and not only did it quickly become one of the more popular movies on the platform, but it has weathered the storm of new arrivals to hold down its spot. Kraven the Hunter earned a “rotten” 15% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and general audiences reviewed the film at 73%.

After breaking records on Broadway, Denzel Washington is set to play Othello in a brand new feature film adaptation.

Denzel Washington has already brought us one memorable turn as a doomed Shakespearean hero in recent years, with his take on the ambitious and violent usurper Macbeth in Apple’s The Tragedy Of Macbeth collaborating with director Joel Coen.

However, following a highly successful opening on Broadway which has broken the record for the highest opening week gross ever, it looks as though his stage version of Othello may be making the same transition.

Washington stars alongside Jake Gyllenhaal in the Broadway play, which has been in previews since February 24. “Othello” opened March 23 and runs through June 8. The play already broke the record for the highest weekly gross ever by earning $2.8 million in its second week. Now, director Kenny Leon is teasing that the historic Shakespeare retelling could lead to a film.

Leon told The Hollywood Reporter that there has “absolutely” been talks with Washington about adapting the play into a feature. Leon previously has collaborated with Washington on two other plays, “A Raisin in the Sun” and “Fences,” which Washington then later directed the film version of. When asked if Gyllenhaal would also potentially reprise his role for an “Othello” film, Leon said, “I would hope so, absolutely, that’s what I would hope would happen.”

Christopher Nolan is one of the most respected directors of the 21st century. While he technically made his debut with Following in 1998, Nolan's breakout work is largely considered to be Memento, which was released in 2000. This movie earned Nolan his first Oscar nomination, for Best Original Screenplay, based on the script he co-wrote with his brother Jonathan Nolan. Memento is perhaps one of Nolan's most classic examples of playing with time as a storytelling device, a motif that would become a signature tool throughout his work.

Memento was well-received, and Nolan's filmography has developed growing clout over the years. The director's first movie to be nominated for Best Picture ended up being Inception. From there, multiple other Nolan films would be nominated for Oscars, including Dunkirk and Oppenheimer. The latter film would go on to become Nolan's first movie to win Best Picture, and also earned the auteur an award for Best Director.

The Direct spoke with the talented cast of Apple TV+'s show Government Cheese at SXSW about what it means to live life on a righteous path and what inventions they wish they coined.

The series follows David Oyelowo's Hampton Chambers, a burglar-turned-inventor whose life gets more chaotic than intended when he gets out of prison and tries to squash his bad habits by inventing a self-sharpening drill.
