Amy Israel, the head of scripted at Showtime, is stepping down, Variety has learned.
Israel’s formal title is executive vice president of global programming. She will remain with Showtime through the end of the year in a transitional role. The announcement of her departure was made by Paramount’s Chris McCarthy and Nina L. Diaz.
“For the past 12 years, Amy has been an integral part of the creative team and the driving force behind some of Showtime’s most iconic franchises,” McCarthy and Diaz wrote in a memo to their staff. “From the beloved ‘Billions’ to the bold hit ‘Yellowjackets,’ Amy’s love for mentoring staff as well as her ability to nurture and foster talent toward realizing their vision is nothing short of inspiring. Her instrumental role in bringing upcoming, fresh and groundbreaking series like ‘The Curse’ and ‘Fellow Travelers’ to life is a testament to her unwavering dedication and devotion.

There’s more change at Showtime.
Amy Israel, who has been with the brand for more than 10 years, is the latest executive to leave.
Israel, who was most recently EVP, Original Programming, Global Scripted, has been responsible for series such as Billions, Smilf, The Affair, Masters of Sex and Black Monday as well as more recent projects such as Yellowjackets, Halo, The Curse and Fellow Travelers.
Her departure comes a few months after the departure of David Nevins and Jana Winograde and a new role for Gary Levine. Other execs who left included Vinnie Malhotra, Michael Crotty, Rob Rosenberg and Kent Sevener as part of a new leadership team under Nina Diaz that included Keith Cox as President of Scripted.
It comes after Showtime was merged with MTV Entertainment Studios under Chris McCarthy and it was rebranded Paramount+ with Showtime.
See note from Diaz and McCarthy below.

Another important executive is leaving their post at Showtime.
Amy Israel is stepping down from her position as head of scripted programming for the Paramount Global-backed network. The news, which was announced internally Thursday via a memo from Chris McCarthy and Nina Diaz, follows the February departures of Gary Levine and Jana Winograde from their top roles at the premium cabler. (Levine remains an adviser.) Israel is leaving the role effective today, but will remain on in an advisory role through year’s end. It’s unclear if she will be replaced.
Israel has been with Showtime for more than a decade and helped develop some of its biggest hits, including Billions and Yellowjackets, as well as the upcoming The Curse and Fellow Travelers. Israel joined Showtime in 2011 as senior vp originals and rose through the ranks under Levine and Winograde.

Another Showtime scripted original series has been shown the door.
The Paramount Global-backed premium cable network has canceled I Love That For You, the comedy inspired by star and co-creator Vanessa Bayer’s experience with childhood leukemia. The comedy, which ran for one season and had been one of the few remaining scripted series from the cabler’s previous executive regime, is expected to be shopped by producers Annapurna.
I Love That For You launched in May 2022 to warm reviews and wrapped its run a month later. The series co-starring Molly Shannon in a Saturday Night Live reunion with Bayer had been awaiting word on its future for nearly a year.
“I Love That For You has completed its run on Showtime. We want to thank Vanessa, Jeremy [Beiler, co-creator] and Jessi [Klein, EP], along with the incredible cast and crew for their hard work and wish them the best going forward,” a...

Layoffs will be hitting 25% of employees across the Showtime, MTV Entertainment Studios and Paramount Media Networks groups in the U.S. Tuesday, following months of internal deliberations about integration amid Showtime’s rebranding into Paramount+ With Showtime.
Additionally, MTV News — which was significantly affected by layoffs more than five years ago — will be shutting down. Other units, most of which are operations, will be shuttered as well.
In a memo to staff, Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios and Paramount Media Networks president Chris McCarthy said that, despite Paramount’s “success in streaming, we continue to feel pressure from broader economic headwinds like many of our peers,” and that “senior leaders in coordination with Hr have been working together over the past few months to determine the optimal organization for the current and future needs of our business.”

When Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson first moved to Los Angeles, working as a dog walker and P.F. Chang’s bartender, respectively, the native New Jersey couple liked to splurge on dinner and drinks at Tam O’Shanter — the 100-year-old Scottish house of prime rib in Atwater Village. These days, however, it’s where they go to break story on their Emmy-nominated drama, Yellowjackets. “It turns out that this place is kind of a writers’ haunt,” says Lyle, next to one of the Tudor building’s dormant fireplaces on a recent March afternoon. “I’ve seen Dan Harmon here a few times. And Jason Segel, who we worked with on Dispatches From Elsewhere, he fucking loves this place.”

Homeland duo Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa may be heading back to Showtime.
The Sony Pictures TV-based duo is teaming with Craig Borten (Dallas Buyers Club) to develop an adaptation of the 1997 dystopian movie Gattaca for the premium cable network. Sources say the project is being eyed with a sizable commitment at the Paramount Global-backed cabler and marks the first new project to be developed since Chris McCarthy added oversight of Showtime to his purview.
Reps for Showtime and Sony TV declined to comment, as deals have yet to close.
The movie starred Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman and was set in a not-too-distant future where eugenics is common and genetic discrimination is illegal. Andrew Niccol wrote and directed the movie, which was produced by Sony’s Columbia Pictures. Danny DeVito, Michael Shamberg, Stacey Sher and Gail Lyon produced the pic.

In a fickle TV business where the top network posts rank at the bottom for job security, we lost two of the longest-tenured executives in just a couple of days: the CW chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz, who stepped down Monday, and David Nevins, Chairman and CEO, Paramount Premium Group and Chief Creative Officer, Paramount+ Scripted Series, whose exit was announced Thursday. Both were around the 12-year mark in their jobs.
The circumstances were different, though ownership changes and the never-ending evolution of the TV business were involved in both cases.
In addition to his reign atop of Showtime for the past dozen years, Nevins stepped in as Chief Creative Officer at CBS for two years after the ouster of Les Moonves. Then he added a string of responsibilities following the 2019 Viacom-CBS merger, including oversight of BET, Paramount TV Studios and Paramount+’s scripted programming. Those new challenges likely prolonged his tenure,...

David Nevins has stepped down as Chairman and CEO, Paramount Premium Group and Chief Creative Officer, Paramount+ Scripted Series. He just made the announcement internally in a memo, a copy of which was obtained by Deadline (read it below). He will be departing at the end of the year.
Nevins’ decision comes three years after the completion of the Viacom-CBS merger. The longtime Showtime Chairman and CEO had been rising in the ranks since then, adding oversight of BET, Paramount+’s scripted originals and Paramount Television. A respected veteran TV executive, he was part of the senior Paramount leadership under CEO Bob Bakish. With multiple executives having a say over Paramount+ and calls often being made by a committee, there has been some frustration over the decision-making process at the company. There also had been chatter about a move to consolidate some of the operations under Bakish.

Exclusive: The Affair star Ruth Wilson and Peaky Blinders and Good Luck to You, Leo Grande actor Daryl McCormack have been set to lead new blue-chip BBC and Showtime series The Woman in the Wall, inspired by Ireland’s controversial Magdalene Laundries.
In the 6×60’ gothic thriller, two-time BAFTA nominee Wilson will play Lorna Brady, who wakes one morning to find a corpse in her house. Brady has no idea who the dead woman is or if she herself might be responsible for the apparent murder, because she has long suffered from extreme bouts of sleepwalking. The episodes began during her teenage years when she was incarcerated in one of Ireland and the Catholic Church’s notorious Magdalene Laundries, where ‘fallen women’ were sent to atone for “sins” such as adultery and teenage pregnancy.

Yellowjackets was one of the buzziest and most successful series when it burst onto screens in 2021.
The series drew bumper ratings and rave reviews, meaning that it was only a matter of time before it snagged a renewal.
Thankfully, the renewal was made official in December 2021, but the series is yet to return to production, making a 2022 return impossible.
Co-creator Ashley Lyle opened up about the highly-anticipated return in an interview with The Wrap.
“We’re looking into the first quarter of 2023,” Lyle shared.
“We are on a very similar production track in terms of time as we were last season, although of course, we have to shoot an additional episode because we had already shot the pilot the last time.”
Production on Season 2 is expected to get underway later this month and it is set to wrap in February.
“We’ll be airing sometimes shortly after that,” according to Lyle.

This Yellowjackets article contains spoilers.
The Yellowjackets finale may have left us with a million questions, but at least we know there’s another season full of answers on its way. Showtime has officially renewed Yellowjackets for season 2. It should come as no surprise considering the critical acclaim and social buzz the show has received since it premiered last November.
“Yellowjackets has been an unadulterated sensation for Showtime,” said Showtime entertainment president Gary Levine in a statement. “We are overwhelmed by both the acclaim and the audience response to our series, including several ‘Best of 2021’ lists, a 100 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes and snowballing viewership. Clearly there is a hunger for originality and audacity, and our incredible showrunners Ashley, Bart and Jonathan, along with their pitch-perfect cast, have delivered that and so much more. I can’t wait to see the surprises they have in store for us in season two.

This article contains spoilers for Dexter: New Blood.
Regardless of what some fans and critics thought about Showtime’s Dexter revival, Dexter: New Blood has officially become the network’s most-watched series of all time. The show’s 10-episode run averaged around 8 million viewers a week. That’s more than Showtime’s previous signature series, Homeland, and the 3 million viewers that watched the Dexter: New Blood finale helped the revival overcome Homeland season 3’s finale in 2013 to become the most watched season finale on the network. Further, two million of those viewers came from streaming and on-demand platforms, setting another new record for Showtime.
“We’re thrilled by the overwhelming response from the millions of fans of Dexter: New Blood these past 10 weeks,” said the entertainment president of Showtime Networks, Gary Levine. “Whether they loved the finale or couldn’t bear to see it end, we so appreciate their passion.

Spoiler Alert: This interview reveals major storylines from the finale of Showtime’s Dexter: New Blood.
When Clyde Phillips met with Michael C. Hall about returning to the role of Dexter Morgan in what would become Dexter: New Blood, he already knew the serial killer’s life would end.
Hall signed up without hesitation.
Fans of the hit Showtime series Dexter, which ran eight seasons from 2006-2013, rejoined the former Miami Metro blood spatter analyst —now known by the alias Jim Lindsay—and have enthusiastically tuned in to watch his final adventure unfold. And though that journey has now come to an end with his shocking death, the beloved franchise may continue to expand with a little help from his progeny, Harrison Morgan (Jack Alcott).
Phillips spoke with Deadline about whether death was the only conclusion on the table for Dexter, the status of a possible continuation, and what happens...

Showtime has renewed its chilling thriller “Yellowjackets” for a second season. According to the network, 4 million viewers across Showtime’s platforms have watched the premiere of “Yellowjackets,” which made its debut on Nov. 14. Melanie Lynskey, Juliette Lewis, Christina Ricci and Tawny Cypress lead the adult cast of the show. “Yellowjackets” was created and executive produced by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, with whom Jonathan Lisco is co-showrunner and executive producer. You can’t outrun your legacy, it seems. Showtime has unveiled the first trailer for its feature film follow-up to Liev Schreiber-fronted drama Ray Donovan.
The network has also dated the movie, launching it on Friday January 14 at 9pm.
This comes almost exactly two years since the season seven finale aired on the premium network, which canceled the show after the final episode.
The film picks up where season seven left off, with Mickey, played by Jon Voight, in the wind and Schreiber’s Ray determined to find and stop him before he can cause any more carnage. It will also weave together the present-day fallout from the Donovan/Sullivan feud with Ray and Mickey’s origin story from 30 years ago.
Schreiber co-wrote the script with series showrunner David Hollander, who directed the film.

Dexter: New Blood showrunner Clyde Phillips isn’t shy when looking back at his work on the series proper. When we mention that Season 4 was “arguably the show’s best season,” the executive producer interrupts the declaration with a laugh and an exclamation: “Inarguably!”
Phillips left the original show following a fourth season that saw Dexter take down the Trinity Killer (John Lithgow), shortly after Trinity left wife Rita (Julie Benz) dead and bloodied in a bathtub. Now, Phillips is back to reclaim the reins in Showtime’s new limited event series (premiering Sunday at 9/8c).

“Dexter” is back and he’s killing again. Returning eight years after the original Showtime series wrapped means entering a very different television landscape and cultural conversation around complicated men — and the wider world around them.
While showrunner Clyde Phillips and star and executive producer Michael C. Hall acknowledge that said world and the way people watch television have changed, they reject the notion that, as Phillips puts it, “the antihero narrative [is] over and everything’s going to be ‘Ted Lasso’ now.”
In the show’s original 2006-13 run, viewers learned why Dexter Morgan became a serial killer: His adoptive father and a questionable therapist created a code by which he could kill — if his victims truly deserved it. Raised with a misguided sense of how to channel one’s darkest impulses, Dexter displayed psychopathic tendencies yet had a genuine desire to make real connections and have a so-called regular life.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not watched “No Direction Home,” the Season 5 finale episode of Showtime drama “Billions.”
Damian Lewis has signed off of “Billions” after a five-season run as the alpha-male hedge fund billionaire Bobby Axelrod.

Production is under way with Corey Stoll’s Mike Prince character taking center stage alongside Paul Giamatti’s Chuck Rhoades and Maggie Siff’s Wendy Rhoades. Lewis’ status on future “Billions” seasons had been unclear until Sunday night, when the long-delayed Season 5 finale, “No Direction Home,” finally aired. In the end, Lewis’ Axelrod, once again under the gun from law enforcement, escapes in cloak-and-dagger fashion with a hoard...

Dexter will face another figure from his past on the upcoming Showtime revival.
TV Line confirmed the news, which has been heavily rumored for months.
No details on how long the return is for, but John Lithgow, who is also set for a comeback, suggested to Deadline that they would be back in flashbacks.
“It was just wonderful to rejoin that gang — including Michael [C. Hall] and Jennifer Carpenter and [exec producer] Clyde Phillips.”
With Carpenter's Debra being dead by the end of the original series in 2013, it makes sense.
It's also possible that Dexter will be haunted by faces from his past, but we'll need to tune in when the series returns in the fall for more insight into it all.
For her part, Carpenter hinted at a return earlier this year when she shared a photo on Instagram, presumably from the set of the series.

Dexter is bringing back one of its most familiar villains.
Per Deadline, John Lithgow has been locked in for the upcoming revival and will shoot a cameo.
There are no details on how the character will return, but given that he was killed off during Dexter Season 4, we're inclined to believe it will be a dream-like scenario.
This is quite the turn of events, but it seems like the limited series revival will be considerably different.
Clancy Brown (Carnivale and Billions) is on board as primary antagonist Kurt Caldwell, the unofficial mayor of Iron Lake.
The cast also includes Julia Jones (as Iron Lake’s first Native American Chief of Police), Jane the Virgin alum Alano Miller (as an Iron Lake Pd sergeant), and Lovecraft Country‘s Jamie Chung (as a famous true-crime podcaster from Los Angeles who finds herself caught up in something she's probably going to want to...

American Gigolo is moving full steam ahead at Showtime.
Today, the premium cabler announced a series order for a 10-episode reboot, which is written and directed by Emmy nominee David Hollander (Ray Donovan).
Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced the original film, will executive produce with Jonathan Littman and KristieAnne Reed.
Bernthal also serves as a producer. The project is a production of Paramount Television Studios.
American Gigolo is a present-day reimagining of the iconic 1980 film.
Bernthal will play Julian Kaye, who is introduced 18 years after being arrested for murder and struggling to find his footing in the modern-day Los Angeles sex industry.
This happens while seeking the truth about the set-up that sent him to prison all those years ago and also hoping to reconnect with Michelle, his one true love.
“If you haven’t already fallen under the spell of Jon Bernthal, get ready,” said Showtime president Gary Levine in a statement.

He seeks the truth about the set-up that sent him to prison all those years ago and also hoping to reconnect with Michelle (Gretchen Mol), his one true love.
The series will also star Rosie O’Donnell as homicide Detective Sunday, Lizzie Brocheré as sex work ring heiress Isabelle, Gabriel Labelle as a younger version of Julian named Johnny, Leland Orser as Richard Stratton, a self-made tech billionaire, and guest star Wayne Brady as Lorenzo,...

Dexter Morgan's reign of terror will resume on Showtime this fall -- eight years after the original series ended.
Showtime on Thursday confirmed that the Michael C. Hall-fronted revival will premiere this fall.
Clyde Phillips is at the helm of the reboot, which takes place in a new location for the series.
Dexter will be living in Upstate New York for the ten-episode series, and well, he's going to find himself in a tough spot.
The new promo shows Dexter's signature cheeky grin as he gets ready to carve up his next victim.
But, who might that person be?
We have no clue, but all we can do is speculate.
Clancy Brown (Carnivale and Billions) is on board as primary antagonist Kurt Caldwell, the unofficial mayor of Iron Lake.
The cast also includes Julia Jones (as Iron Lake’s first Native American Chief of Police), Jane the Virgin...

Showtime has ordered the series “Shaka: King of The Zulu Nation” from Antoine Fuqua, the pay TV channel said Tuesday.
Created and written by Olu Odebunmi and Tolu Awosika, the hourlong show is described as an “epic drama centered around one man’s personal journey from stigmatized childhood to warrior king.”
Per Showtime, “Rooted in actual events, ‘Shaka: King of the Zulu Nation’ tells the story of the Zulu Empire chief Shaka and his unlikely rise to power, uniting multiple tribes across vast stretches of Africa in the early 19th century to transform his power into legend, on par with history’s most seminal figures. In ferocious battles that test the body and soul, in alliances that test the bonds of love and friendship, a complex sociological system plays out that renders the human cost front and center, for the victors as well as the vanquished, all in an effort...

Kristin Dodson has been cast as a series regular in the upcoming Kevin Iso and Dan Perlman co-created comedy series for Showtime, “Flatbush Misdemeanors,” Variety has learned exclusively.

“Flatbush Misdemeanors,” starring Iso and Perlman, centers on “a raw comedy of city life following Dan and Kevin, who play characters struggling to thrive in their new surroundings in Flatbush, Brooklyn,” looking to “climb out of their heads and connect with others,” per the logline. For seven seasons, Liev Schreiber played the titular role of Ray Donovan on Showtime.
It was canceled without much fanfare, let alone a proper goodbye to the show that scored awards and viewers for the network.
Thankfully, something is going to be done about that.
Despite Schreiber's pleas for an eighth season of the fan-favorite Showtime drama, the request fell on deaf ears, going so far as to end the beloved show on a cliffhanger.
Not surprisingly, it resulted in some serious blowback against the network.
At the time of its cancellation, Showtime's co-head of entertainment, Gary Levine, said that he always thought the show would go seven or eight seasons before calling it quits.
The same couldn't be said of its star or its showrunner, David Hollander, who said the news blindsided him.
Fans have long memories, and they've remained vocal about the less-than-stellar treatment of the lasting drama.
