warning: spoilers!
Doctor Who does found-footage… and it actually works in a way that most found-footage stories don’t even bother with anymore. It works because there’s a genuine rationale for someone — in this case, Rassmussen — to have assembled “extant” footage into something resembling a story. And that’s even before we learn that he has ulterior motives, and a secondary, hidden rationale for assembling the found footage. This is pretty brilliant. And it plays with our presumptions about genre, both about science fiction and found-footage: it’s because we’re so used to the idea of Sf soldiers wearing helmet cams that we don’t need to be told that the soldiers are wearing helmet cams. Which, of course, they aren’t. The “twist” reveal that there are no helmet cams works only because we automatically presumed that they were.

Where can you go to get the best science fiction and fantasy in any given year? Anywhere that sells the annual Nebula and Hugo anthologies, naturally! This year, the collected nominated Nebula short stories and novelettes are gathered together in a tome called Nebula Awards Showcase 2011, edited by the esteemed and highly talented author Kevin J. Anderson. Included is the winning novella, the incredible The Women of Nell Gwynne’s by Kage Baker; the three poems nominated for the Rhysling Awards; a story by the Sfwa Author Emeritus, Neal Barrett Jr., “Getting Dark”; and a story introduced by the Sfwa Grand Master, Damon Knight, by Joe Haldeman, the newest Grand Master, “A Tangled Web.”
Winners of the other awards given out are also included, like the Nebula Award for the Best Novel, The Windup Girl by Paulo Bacigalupi; the Andre Norton Award for Young Adult Science Fiction and Fantasy winner,...

SFSite (the 'home page for science fiction and fantasy literature') and Locus Magazine (the website for the 'leading news and review magazine for science fiction and fantasy') have posted lists of sci-fi and fantasy literature they decided were the 'best' of 2009. Not surprisingly, SFSite mostly chose titles written by men. Locus did a little better.
SFSite had only one novel, "Boneshaker" by Cherie Priest, on their top ten list. There were 21 Honorable Mentions, three of which were by women, including Catherynne M. Valente's "Palimpset", "Year of the Flood" by Margaret Atwood and "The Red Tree" by Caitlin R. Kiernan. You can see them all here...

So I was going to review another movie this week but a friend of mine suggested doing something new and different, he suggested I try reviewing something that didn’t have pictures. I gave it a momentary thought and said ‘Sure! I don’t need art to be able to read’ so he went into his bathroom and came out with Beggars in Spain. I smiled and said ‘cool’ and he said ‘good luck genius ’. Hey now, I’m no ‘pure read’ slacker! I can read with the best of them- I’ve got the William Gibson library, the Neal Stephenson criticals and All the Rudy Rucker’s and I know the answer to Do Androids Dream of Electric sheep? So don’t go taunting me with a Nancy Kress novel. No sir, I will read this book and lay to waste all reviewers that have come before me. Someone...

A "live" Rocky Horror Picture Show will be part of Universal Studios' Halloween Horror Nights, starting October 6th. Wow, times do change. The Hugo Awards have been announced (including awards for Neil Gaiman, Nancy Kress, Elizabeth Bear, Joss Whedon, and Wall-e). Will there be an Underworld 4? More (and better) pics of the Dawn Treader. The trailer for Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus (Heath Ledger's last film) is out, and it looks absolutely amazing. The movie will be released December 25th in the U.S.
