Bob Odenkirk knows he should probably leave his kids alone. But the Better Call Saul star spent the pandemic working on an Audible murder comedy podcast with his son, Nate, 23, and collaborating on a children’s book with his artist daughter, Erin, 22. “If I want to do a good job as a dad, I know I have to let them be,” he says. “But that’s not easy because they’re very fun people and their ideas are so exciting.”
Zilot & Other Important Rhymes (Little, Brown Books for Young Readers) combines illustrations by Erin (the recent Pratt Institute grad calls her dad Bob) with poems written by the kids when they were young, with an update by the Odenkirk family (including Odenkirk’s wife, Naomi); it hits bookstores Oct. 10. The father-daughter duo’s national book tour includes an appearance at the opening night of the Scad Savannah Film Festival on Oct.

Some of the best "Saturday Night Live" sketches are the ones that, on paper at least, shouldn't have worked. The David S. Pumpkins sketch was so dumb it could've easily been dismissed the moment the idea was introduced in the writers' room, but Tom Hanks committed hard to the bit and they pulled it off. It ended up being so popular it was given an animated Halloween special the following year.
Another dumb idea that shouldn't have worked was the classic Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer sketch. It features cast member Phil Hartman as a caveman who'd been frozen in ice 100,000 years ago, discovered and thawed out by scientists, and then went on to become a lawyer. The joke is basically that the caveman talks and acts like a sleazy lawyer, while also constantly mentioning how scary and confusing he finds the modern world to be. "Sometimes when I get a message on my fax machine,...

As tonight’s episode of Saturday Night Live wound down, the show paid tribute to its former writer John Bowman, who died suddenly at home in California on New Year’s Eve, aged 64.
Bowman wrote on the series from1988-1989 and won an Emmy for his efforts across 20 episodes, sharing the honor with Mike Myers, Al Franken, Conan O’Brien, Bob Odenkirk, Lorne Michaels, Phil Hartman, James Downey, A. Whitney Brown, Greg Daniels, Tom Davis, Shannon Gaughan, Jack Handey, Herbert Sargent, Tom Schiller, Robert Smigel, Bonnie Turner, Terry Turner, Christine Zander and George Meyer.
Bowman also made uncredited appearances in a pair of 1988 episodes hosted by actors Danny DeVito and John Lithgow.
He was otherwise best known for co-creating and producing the ’90s sitcom Martin, writing on series including In Living Color, and leading the WGA’s negotiating committee during the 2007-08 strike.

Topher Grace believes we may take “Saturday Night Live” for granted. After nearly 45 years, the late-night sketch series has become such an institution that it’s easy to forget the program’s unique place in TV history.
“There’s something special about ‘SNL’ and how it’s been in the same place the whole time,” Grace told Variety‘s My Favorite Episode podcast. “A lot of it is the genius of Lorne Michaels, which is that show is so successful he could have moved it. He could have put it in a bigger studio. There’s something so small about that studio space, it’s hard to make things look great. That’s the point of it. He gives it this live, tactile quality that has captured over the last four and a half decades what America is going through. It’s so immediate, there’s nothing else like it.

You may have seen a story this week detailing how Facebook shut down a series of accounts. As noted by Politico, Facebook claimed these accounts “sought to inflame social and political tensions in the United States, and said their activity was similar — and in some cases connected — to that of Russian accounts during the 2016 election.”
Similar? What does “similar” mean?
The death-pit for civil liberties is usually found in a combination of fringe/unpopular people or ideas and a national security emergency.

Bob Odenkirk's 30-plus-year career has included a stint as an SNL writer, a groundbreaking sketch series (Mr. Show), stand-up comedy, and, most recently, Better Call Saul, the Breaking Bad prequel in which he gives a brilliant performance as "morally flexible" lawyer Jimmy McGill. And how has the 54-year-old actor's outlook changed over that three-decade span? "As a young man I was the fuckin' expert on comedy, on who was funny and who wasn't funny and who's a douchebag," he says. "I still feel those things but I don't think I'm so right.

“Melania Moments” has been one of the staples of the 42nd season of “Saturday Night Live,” with a new edition of the Jack Handey-style shorts lampooning the decadence of Melania Trump coming with each new “SNL” this year so far. You can watch the clip above. Saturday’s Melania Moment was titled “The Housemaid,” and saw Cecily Strong‘s Melania facing a new sort of existential crisis as she noticed the maid (also Cecily Strong) cleaning the Trump Tower penthouse actually looked a lot like herself. The realization gives her an idea for how she may be able to experience life as.

And now, for the moment we’ve all truly been waiting for this election cycle: The premiere of “Saturday Night Live.” Last night, the sketch comedy legend kicked off its 42nd season with an uneven first episode. First-time host Margot Robbie held it down, flexing comedic muscle despite sketches that seemed unwilling to cast her as anything but “hottest person in the room.” But how did it go as a whole? Let’s take a closer look.

Key & Peele: We were too busy on our show to film an Obamacare sketch with President Obama “We had to turn him down,” says Jordan Peele. “We were making the season.” Adds Keegan-Michael Key: “We literally couldn’t fit it in to our schedules...So we actually had to relieve the president of his duties." Chris from “Everybody Hates Chris” joins “The Walking Dead” Tyler James Williams, who’s almost 22 and who most recently starred on “Go On," will play a character named Noah. No other details have been revealed. Julie Chen on if we’ll get another “Big Brother: All-Stars”: “I don’t think so” "I mean, look at the ratings for this past season — higher than last year, all new people,” she tells EW. "Look, we love the Will Kirbys, the Mike Boogies, and the Janelles, and they will always have a special spot in our hearts.

Who here remembers Jack Handey? You know, the surrealist comic best known for his one-liner jokes meant to make you laugh and then think and then make you pass the bong, man. For 7 years, his New Age "Deep Thoughts" were the filler between SNL sketches, forever searing them into our collective consciousness. Well if SNL wants to resurrect the bit, Nick Offerman and the subreddit /ShowerThoughts are ready! Cherry picking some of the best one-liners, Offerman offers (zing!) his voice up to give these stray ruminations the gravitas they deserve.

Jack Handey once wrote, "Whenever you read a good book, it’s like the author is right there, in the room talking to you, which is why I don’t like to read good books." "Deep Thoughts" like this one were once interstitials on Saturday Night Live, deadpan tone poems introduced by a purring Phil Hartman and accompanied by stock footage of a sunset or a babbling brook. "Deep Thoughts" became an empire, and then a national sensibility. In the past few years, Handey has been working on his own good book, The Stench of Honolulu, a novel, and it’s finally out today. We talked to him about his idea of Hawaii, his famous cat's sanity, and writing poems for his new pet, a rat, Squeaky.Did you read the story in the Times that accused you of influencing a generation of American poets?Yeah, I saw that. [Laughs.] I was flattered.

There's the obvious "Deep Thoughts With Jack Handey" comparison, but it's just that it wouldn't be all that accurate to go ahead and do so, considering Jack Handey's stuff was funny, and Sarah Silverman's, predictably, is not. But hey! There might be one of you out there who does his or her own thing, goes against the grain (and all natural laws of life) and thinks Sarah Silverman's funny. There is that possibility, after all. --Sarah Taylor Read more...
