House of Villains, E!’s new series featuring reality TV baddies such as Vanderpump Rules’ Jax Taylor and The Apprentice’s Omarosa, is looking to “lean into the comedy” of the genre, according to its exec producer.
John Irwin, who runs Irwin Entertainment and has produced celebrity house shows such as Celebrity Rehab and Sober House, told Deadline, “From the beginning, our strategy was to lean into the comedy of this concept and for the show to parody itself and the genre.”
Irwin explained that the show, which pits the reality villains against each other via a series of challenges in order to win $200,000, was initially developed by the NBCUniversal-owned cable network.
John Irwin
He said that Joel McHale was their first choice. “Not only is he insanely funny, he’s also a hard-core fan of reality television and familiar with most of our cast from his days on The Soup.

One summer in the late 1980s, when Eli Frankel was about 15, his father gave him a gift. An active part of the 1960s counterculture, the elder Frankel thought his teenage son should be reading more, so one day he brought him Helter Skelter, the 1972 true-crime bestseller about Charles Manson. Written by Vincent Bugliosi, the L.A. The myth of Charles Manson and Helter Skelter struck a chord when he manipulated "the family" to murder innocent but well-known people to push his still rather confusing agenda to start a race war.
The family was Manson's groupies.
They considered Manson a rockstar and a messiah, and their love for him drove them to unforgivable places. They fell for the erstwhile charms of a petty conman and cemented a place in history.
Helter Skelter: An American Myth will air on Epix beginning Sunday, July 26, and director Lesley Chilcott went to great lengths to dig into Manson's history, hoping to show, with extensive research and first-person interviews, that Charles Manson has not been worth over 50 years of fascination.
Chilcott's documentary series feels like the definitive exploration into Manson and his followers.
She doesn't portray Manson in a favorable light, deserving of obsession but highlights how the times and Manson's extensive...

For the folks for whom spring water just isn't pure enough, there is $10-a-bottle iceberg water, melted from glacial Arctic ice frozen thousands of years ago -- presumably free of minerals and post-Industrial Revolution pollutants and supposedly so pristine it has absolutely no taste.
And the men who go out and get the goods to satisfy those discriminating palates can be seen risking life and limb in "Iceberg Hunters," premiering Tuesday, Sept. 18, on The Weather Channel.
Each May through August, Whyman, Dale and Travis Richards, a brothers-and-son team from St. Anthony, Newfoundland, ply the waters of "Iceberg Alley" off Canada's Atlantic coast in search of the biggest game on Earth. When they spot their quarry, they load their rifles and fire, hoping to break off half-ton chunks they can sell to bottling plants.
Of course, this work isn't without risk. The boat can't get too close to these floating behemoths for fear of falling ice,...

Gsn (formerly Game Show Network) has picked up Family Trade, a new original unscripted series about the quirky barter system employed by G-Stone Motors, a Gmc and Ford dealership in Middlebury, Vermont. Gsn has ordered eight episodes of the series, from Lionsgate and Eli Frankel’s studio-based Rogue State Prods., for a 2013 premiere. The docu series, which echos such hit cable reality franchises as Pawn Stars and Storage Wars, is part of Gsn’s strategy to broaden from studio-based game shows into other programming genres under new programming chief Amy Introcaso-Davis. “With Family Trade, Gsn launches a new category of original series that we call Real-Life Games—shows that take place in real settings and feature real-life risk,” she said. “We’re taking the cameras out of the studio to celebrate how people become winners in everyday real-life situations.” At G-Stone Motors, founder Gardner Stone will trade you a beautiful...

CAA has hired A&E VP Development Scott Lonker to be an agent in the NY alternative TV department. Here's what's interesting: Lonker used to be a William Morris agent. And good friends with Jon Rosen, who runs East Coast TV for Wme, where he's a board member. Word is that CAA "overpaid" to snag the well-liked Lonker. "That is the common theme there," my insider says. Eli Frankel, the former Svp of Magical Elves, which produces all those unscripted shows like Top Chef, has fired CAA and hired Wme. Frankel is currently under an overall deal at Lionsgate TV (also a Wme client).

Lionsgate TV is picking up the life of swingers as an object of its new reality series. The company has been developing "Bedroom Community", which will follow suburban couples who swap partners, and has shot a presentation for the project.
Reality producer Eli Frankel is the mastermind of the project. "What we have seen on shows about swingers are primarily older hippies, fringe people who are a little bit dirty. What we found are elite groups of people in upscale communities who are good-looking and have money and access," he explains on what will make the show interesting.
Frankel admits it took awhile to convince people, who will be featured on the series, that "the show was not going to be exploitative but just document people who are fairly normal but chose to do live their relationships on the edge." He goes on assuring that, despite the title, the show...

Exclusive: After exploring pot-dealing in suburbia in its dark comedy Weeds, Lionsgate Television is taking on another suburban taboo in a new reality series. Certain to create controversy, Bedroom Community revolves around a group of swingers -- suburban couples who swap partners. Bedroom Community is one of the first projects shepherded by reality producer Eli Frankel, who in March signed a two-year deal with Lionsgate. Exclusive: As part of its push in the alternative programming arena, Lionsgate Television has signed a two-year overall deal with reality producer and development executive Eli Frankel, who most recently served as Svp of development for Magical Elves, the production company behind Project Runway and Top Chef. Lionsgate TV Group president Kevin Beggs said the company so far had taken a very opportunistic approach to unscriped programming with occasional projects. "It has not been a concerted, strategic effort the way you think of our scripted business," he said. "But reality television has matured into such a strong business that we wanted to change that." Instead of hiring a traditional unscripted executive, Beggs said they opted for bringing in a producer-developer who is a self-starter and self-sufficient and went with Frankel, whose experience ranges from development executive to executive producer to editor of reality series. Beggs and Frankel first met on...
