When the dust settled on the 2023 Emmy nominations, HBO and Max came out on top with a whopping 127 bids. Eight of those are for “House of the Dragon,” the “Game of Thrones” prequel series that set the water cooler on dragonfire with its breathtaking production values, unexpected twists and mind-blowing time jumps. Even though “HotD” was skunked in the acting, writing and directing races, it still scored a Best Drama Series citation and received key notices for its crafts. Read on for a closer look at “House of the Dragon’s” eight nominations.
In the main series race, “HotD” competes against three fellow HBO dramas that each nabbed more than 20 nominations: “Succession” (27), “The Last of Us” (24) and “The White Lotus” (23). Then there’s Disney+’s “Andor” (8), AMC’s “Better Call Saul” (7), Netflix’s “The Crown” (6) and Showtime’s “Yellowjackets” (3). HBO’s domination in this category is impressive when you consider...

It’s checkmate on the first of three 2021 Creative Arts Emmy Awards shows, and Saturday was a huge evening for “The Queen’s Gambit.” The excellent Netflix limited series led by Anya Taylor-Joy has already won seven 2021 Emmys, technically (and in mostly technical categories).
(By the way, if you think three is a lot of shows to celebrate the television industry’s mostly below-the-line workers, 2020 had Five Creative Arts Emmys shows.)
Sunday’s first show began at 1 p.m. Pt. The second Sunday show, the final one of the two-day 2021 Creative Arts Emmys, begins at 5 p.m. Pt. That’s the presentation that has most of the mainstream categories that don’t fit in next week’s Primetime Emmys.
None of the three Creative Arts Emmys shows are being televised live. Next Saturday, a highlights show of sorts will air on Fxx starting at 8 p.m. Et/Pt.

When it comes to the brutal Emmy battles, there’s clearly one show that rules them all. HBO’s “Game of Thrones” dominated the competition, amassing a record-breaking 32 nominations including Best Drama Series. “I tried to imagine what would be coming; in my wildest dreams it was a battle between a live dragon and a dead dragon,” admits “Game of Thrones” sound designer Paula Fairfield about her expectation for the final season of the Emmy winning show. She continues, “I did not imagine an air fight between all three. That was insane.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
That three-way dragon battle took place in “The Long Night” episode, for which she’s nominated for an Emmy for Best Sound Editing (One-Hour Series). The episode centers on a monumental battle between human forces at Winterfell and the Night King’s army of the undead. It is the biggest battle ever filmed for the medium and the episode runs 80 minutes. Including Fairfield, it has been nominated for nine Emmys.

The powerful sounds of destruction and survival were integral to both HBO drama series “Game of Thrones” and Netflix docu-series “Our Planet.” Whether it was the epic warfare involving Dany’s three dragons or the insurmountable army of the undead (the Wights and White Walkers), “Game of Thrones” upped its Emmy-winning soundscape for “The Battle of Winterfell” from Episode 3’s “The Long Night.”
Meanwhile, Netflix’s docuseries leveraged the impact of climate change and the immersive strength of Dolby Atmos to deliver a wide range of dynamic sounds, including seabirds carpet-bombing the ocean, a scared baby flamingo getting left behind, and the massive ice carving of a melting glacier in Greenland for Episode 1’s “One Planet.”
“‘The Battle of Winterfell’ was an extreme challenge to come up with unique sounds that still fit the palette, given a whole new scope and different level of threat,” said “Game of Throne’s” sound editor Tim Kimmel.

Among all the jaw-dropping moments in the Game of Thrones final season premiere is the long-awaited moment when Jon Snow finally rides a dragon. The secret Targaryen rides Rhaegal - the dragon named for his father, Daenerys's much-older brother Rhaegar - while Dany rides Drogon, named for her late husband, Khal Drogo. Although it is a seriously epic scene, it is immediately followed by an unintentionally funny one: as Jon kisses Dany following their shared flight, he accidentally meets Drogon's gaze, and the dragon gives him an . . . interesting look. One of the theories floating around about this awkward moment? Drogon isn't just named after Khal Drogo - he's the reincarnation of the Dothraki warlord.
At least one member of the Thrones crew has this as her own personal theory of Drogon's backstory. Sound designer Paula Fairfield told Time that she crafts Drogon's sound palette around the idea that he is,...

The season eight premiere of Game of Thrones is still a few too many weeks away for our liking, but the lengthy delay between seasons was actually a good thing for HBO. The two years between season seven and eight has no doubt given them plenty of time to save up enough money to make the final six episodes of the series.

It was a clear victory for sci-fi sound editing Sunday night at the 65th annual Mpse Golden Reel Awards at the Westin Bonaventure. “War for the Planet of the Apes” was the surprise winner for Dialogue/Adr, splitting honors with “Blade Runner 2049,” which grabbed the Effects/Foley prize. Meet Daenerys Targaryen. You know her, of course; she’s the First of Her Name, the Unburnt, Queen of the Andals and the First Men, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Breaker of Chains, and Mother of Dragons. It’s quite the mouthful, but Dany’s historic legacy is part of the reason why Emilia Clarke’s Protector of the Realm has become a bona fide fan-favorite throughout the course of Game of Thrones, and with season 7, it looks as though Daenerys will pay a visit to her ancestral home: Dragonstone.

The end seems to be drawing ever nearer for Game of Thrones. I say that to emphasize the “seems” aspect, for as time goes on, it almost feels like the show is getting farther and farther away from ending. Season 7 was already pushed back a bit, and HBO even said there’s a possibility that Season 8 will get pushed back to 2019 if it would result in a better product. As such, we have a potential for another solid two years of Game of Thrones.
And that’s not even the most of it. The runtimes for all the Season 7 episodes have come in, and while we have a lot less episodes this year than in previous ones, each episode is running longer — with the finale set to hit HBO at an astounding 82 minutes long. It’s been a long, meandering road – a road littered with bodies, treason, epic battles, and family feuds spanning all generations, but with only 13 episodes remaining, Game of Thrones is fast approaching its two-part finale.

A potentially big announcement at the first Game of Thrones fan convention in Nashville. Con of Thrones, wrapped up after a weekend of buildup for the premiere of the seventh season on HBO on July 16th. One of the biggest bits of info to come out of the con is that episodes could be getting much longer in the show's final season.
With only seven episodes scheduled for the upcoming season and just six for the yet-to-be-produced final Season 8, Deadline reports the episode length will probably be in the range of 80-plus minutes next season. The show's sound designer Paula Fairfield said Season 7 episodes will be their customary hour-long duration, but the finale of Season 7 runs at 82 minutes. In Season 8, the episodes may be 80-minutes or more.
Does the fact that the last few episodes of GoT will be longer than usual make you feel better about the show wrapping up?...
