What do you think about cinematic universes? While mega franchise worlds like the MCU certainly seem to overshadow smaller connected universes like the View Askewniverse, there certainly is a mix of positives and negatives within these shared continuities. Among the horror genre’s cinematic universes are movies like Freddy vs. Jason, where two large franchises crossed over into one… interesting movie? Or how about Spiral: From the Book of Saw, where the events of the Saw franchise exist, but a new serial killer is on the rise. And of course, there is the extensive and ongoing mixed bag of scares and screams that is The Conjuring Universe. The Warren family is practically a goldmine for source material that is sure to set you on edge.

It took nearly 20 years to make "The Conjuring," a "based on a true story" film about the supposed hauntings of the Perron family in Harrisville, Rhode Island. For over 14 years, producer Tony DeRosa-Grund went from studio to studio trying to make the film happen, but it wasn't until writers Chad and Carey W. Hayes updated the script and shifted the perspective from the Perron family to paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren that there was movement on the picture. The duo interviewed Lorraine Warren to ensure authenticity, and the new script sparked a massive bidding war. The Hayes brothers had cracked the code — the secret of what would become a massive franchise lay with the Warrens.

Cinematic universes are all the rage now but it's easy to forget how recent a phenomenon this actually is. The notion of a cinematic universe didn't really exist until around 2010 when it became clear what Marvel Studios was doing with its various superhero franchises in the lead-up to the record-breaking "The Avengers" in the summer of 2012. Sure, we had Kevin Smith's films making up the View Askewniverse starting with "Clerks" in 1994 -- not to mention Universal's monster movie crossovers from decades earlier. Still, once Marvel perfected the model, Hollywood chased it down rabidly. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it fails spectacularly. But arguably nobody has done it better this side of Marvel than James Wan and "The Conjuring" universe.

“The devil exists. God exists. And for us, as people, our very destiny hinges upon which one we elect to follow.”
In 2013, James Wan broke the box office again for horror with The Conjuring. At the time, he was riding high off the successes of Saw and Insidious, so to crack open yet another franchise for the genre was something of a coup. Yet the story of the Conjuring universe goes way, way back, involving producer Tony DeRosa-Grund and, of course, the Warrens.
It’s a complicated backstory, admittedly, and one that’s ripe for the vintage Halloweenies treatment. Fortunately for you, the gang headed to Harrisville, Rhode Island in June of 2021 and exorcised all the demons within the 2013 blockbuster, particularly the sordid history involving the Warrens that has been the franchise’s foundation for a decade now.

The Conjuring producer Tony DeRosa-Grund wrote the initial story for The Conjuring, provided the film with its name, and created a road map for the franchise – and yet he hasn’t worked on any of the sequels or spin-offs that have followed. Now Cinedigm has announced that they’re teaming up with DeRosa-Grund to develop a new paranormal horror film called The Haunted, which they’re hoping will spawn another franchise on the level of the Conjuring movies.
The Haunted is said to be “based on verifiable events”. Story details are being kept under wraps, but Cinedigm did reveal that the first film in this hopefully-franchise-to-be begins with one family’s dark and terrifying real-life preternatural experiences which intersect with historical facts and legends surrounding a young pregnant woman accused by her own father of being a witch. That convergence places the family in impending mortal danger.

Fans of The Conjuring have become so obsessed with visiting the Rhode Island farmhouse where the movie is set that the people who actually own it are now trying to sue Warner Bros. for making their home a local tourist attraction. Entertainment Weekly got their hands on court documents that have been filed by Gerald Helfrich and Norma Sutcliffe of Harrisville, Rhode Island, and are against Warner Bros., director James Wan, New Line Productions, the Safran Co., Evergreen Media Holdings, producer Tony DeRosa-Grund, five individual trespassers, and John and Jane Does 1-500. The pair are so livid with the studio and the filmmakers for making a film that was so successful it has inspired a “Conjuring-instigated siege" of their property that they haven’t even been able to think of an amount of money that they want in damages. The suit alleges that ...

Ever since The Conjuring came out, it's been the subject of a spooky legal dispute. The film grossed $318 million worldwide, and with sequels both released and forthcoming, Tony DeRosa-Grund's Evergreen Media Group has put up quite a fight over contingent compensation and the scope of rights. Now, thanks to a new decision by a Texas federal judge, the next round will take place in arbitration. DeRosa-Grund has asserted many claims in his litigation campaign against Warner Bros. and its subsidiary New Line. Halloween cometh early for Warner Bros., which has been hit with a new lawsuit over The Conjuring horror franchise. In this instance, the big scare was delivered in a Houston, Texas, courtroom in the form of a claim that its subsidiary New Line Cinema violated a federal racketeering law by defrauding the creator of The Conjuring, by swindling Harvey Weinstein on The Hobbit and cheating other victims. The lawsuit comes from Tony DeRosa-Grund and his family trust. His Evergreen Media Group has been fighting Warner Bros. over The Conjuring for more than a year, even before the film —

Tony DeRosa-Grund is still battling it out with Warner Bros over his role and rights for The Conjuring franchise, but now a new legal front has opened against the producer – a lawsuit with implications that could potentially spook the studio and New Line’s plans to enlarge the horror franchise of the hit 2013 paranormal pic. In the complaint, a novice producer is alleging that not only does the often litigious DeRosa-Grund owe him more than $250,000 from a sprawling deal gone wrong, but that he in fact holds the rights to the about-to-be released Annabelle as well as October 2015‘s The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist.

Evergreen Media Group, which licensed rights to the filmmakers and Warner Brothers' for their sleeper hit "The Conjuring," has reportedly filed a lawsuit in Texas to stop further films in the franchise. Evergreen Media holds the rights over the case files of real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorrain Warren and licensed a movie version to Warners' New Line label.
Evergreen Media says Warners was only granted rights on a "very limited, selection of the Case Files – i.e., less than one percent (1%) of the total number of Case Files – and the Warrens' life stories, in exchange for a purchase price for each theatrical production or use of those select Case Files as well as a crediting and employing Tony DeRosa-Grund as producer."

While plans for at least two sequels to last year's horror hit "The Conjuring" were fast-tracked both before and after the film's financial success, studio Warner Bros. now faces an uphill battle in getting those movies made thanks to a legal battle over the rights to the film's protagonists.

Sunday 7:30 Am, 3Rd Update: Sizzling Summer 2013 is now fizzling, and $200M total moviegoing this domestic weekend was down -20% from last year. Hollywood was especially glum while the media was annoyingly gleeful over more big-budget movies bombing. Bad news for every new film except Warner Bros/New Line’s low-budget The Conjuring (playing in 2,903 theaters) which opened #1 with a good news $41.5M weekend. It also received from audiences a coveted ‘A-’ CinemaScore, an unusually good grade for the genre where ‘D’ and ‘F’ have become commonplace from fed-up audiences. Going into Friday, the $20M-cost The Conjuring was Fandango’s top ticket seller among four new releases across online and mobile platforms. Warner Bros early on credited director James Wan with making “both an incredibly scary film but also a very well-made quality movie” that likely becomes a badly needed fresh franchise for New Line. The powers-that-be over at New Line are expecting to scare up some decent box office cash this weekend as The Conjuring begins haunting theatres. In fact, they're so confident in the flick (which they should be since it's pretty awesome), they're already thinking franchise.
New Line president Toby Emmerich tells Variety that New Line is exploring a potential franchise based on the Warrens’ investigations, which also involved cases that wound up as the movies The Amityville Horror and The Haunting in Connecticut. “We have Lorraine’s permission and support, and we are working on developing another film,” Emmerich said.

Last night DC was on the black carpet for the premiere of James Wan’s new feature film, The Conjuring, where we spoke with many of the cast members and heard first-hand about the haunting 10-year experience the Perron family had inside that house in Harrisville, Rhode Island.
While working the press line, we were able to speak with one of the sisters, Andrea Perron; the paranormal investigator who witnessed it all first-hand, Lorraine Warren; as well as several members of the cast, including Mackenzie Foy, Joey King, Lili Taylor, Ron Livingston, and Vera Farmiga. Read on to see what everyone had to say about James Wan’s frightening new feature The Conjuring.
Mackenzie Foy (“Cindy Perron”):

As written previously, Lili Taylor’s character, Caroline, seems to endure some hands-on experiences with Bathsheba, the witch spirit. Taylor expands on the film’s story and her character’s place in it. “She’s really scared for a lot of it, and then she’s like ferocious for the last part of it.” We’d been tipped off there is a bit of possession in the mix as well. A match ignites in the dark. A trembling woman’s frail features are barely lit by its glow. We see a staircase below her descending into that blackness. The anxiety of the moment can be heard in the heavy breaths taken by our heroine.
The match burns too low and burns her, causing her to drop it, and the light flickers out. As she eases slowly into darkness, trying in vain to light her way with wooden matches, we wonder if some creature that loves the empty shadows will reveal itself... and when.
When the answer jolts you from your comfortable spot in the real world, you remember this is Exactly the kind of movie James Wan has perfected. The slow creeping dread, that anticipation of terror around the hallway corner, a shadow in the distance that stands... not quite right. This is his world, and The Conjuring looks to...
