“The source material is ample, to say the least, unfortunately,” says actor Stephan James about how he prepared for “#FreeRayshawn” on the new Quibi streaming app. He continues in his exclusive interview with Gold Derby (watch the video above), “Even though these characters are fictitious characters, they’re representative of real people and very real circumstances. We’re seeing that all too often in the headlines.” James likens his eponymous character to Jacob Blake, Philando Castile, George Floyd and Laquan McDonald — real-life Black victims of police shootings and racially-charged brutality.
“I don’t think that we could have anticipated the timeliness of this piece, but again, as an artist, this is what you do it for — you do art that really speaks to life and speaks to society and you hope that it raises awareness and sparks discussion and challenges perspectives,” explains James about how the short-form drama reflects the Black Lives Matter movement.

The first season of Homecoming was deliberately claustrophobic, set largely in the Homecoming Transitional Support Center with nods to All the President’s Men and The Parallax View. Season 2 of the Amazon Prime Video drama is a little bit less Alan Pakula and a little more Brian De Palma, according to director/executive producer Kyle Patrick Alvarez.
“One of the draws to me was, having loved Season 1 so much, and having loved Sam [Esmail]’s aesthetic approach, the challenge was how do we translate that feeling when so much of that feeling was the Homecoming facility set,” Alvarez said during Deadline’s Contenders Television virtual event. “That was so meticulously designed to fit that tone, but now we’re going to be in forests and lakes so we have to re-conceive how to technically approach the scenes so that it felt like Homecoming but on a larger canvas. The following contains spoilers for Homecoming season 2.
A woman wakes up on a canoe in the middle of a lake, she has no idea who she is or how she got there. She sees a man on shore and screams for help, but instead of offering aid, he runs away. She eventually discovers her name, Jaqueline, on a military ID, and after a run-in with local law enforcement, she sets off to find answers about her identity and present circumstances. So begins Homecoming season 2.
Homecoming‘s first season played with time, revealing its narrative over alternating scenes from past and present. Season two is a little more straightforward, breaking the story up into two blocks that mostly follow a linear progression. Still, it might be helpful to view the events of season 2 in as chronological a way as possible. With that in mind, here is Homecoming season 2, “unfolded.”

(The following story contains spoilers for the entire second of Amazon Prime’s “Homecoming”)
“Homecoming” ends its second season much less ambiguously than the Sam Esmail-directed freshman run. And in much, much deadlier fashion, thanks to Walter Cruz (Stephan James).
It turns out Cruz wasn’t the mellowed out, seemingly-happy guy that Heidi Bergman (Julia Roberts) believed him to be when she caught up with him in that diner three years after he was experimented on at the Homecoming facility. It turns out, according to director Kyle Patrick Alvarez, that having parts of your mind wiped has some long-term consequences, especially when you find out who is responsible.
“I always saw and felt Heidi understood that Walter had become this idealistic version of himself. That he was here, he was in his happy place in a way,” Alvarez told TheWrap. “I think what the season does, it says ‘No,...

Homecoming wrapped up a Julia Roberts-less sophomore run with a big bash at Geist headquarters — but for a few key characters, the party’s over.
Season 2’s finale opens the same way the premiere did: with Alex waking up in that rowboat. Now we see that Walter Cruz was the guy on the shore she was waving to who ran off. He peels away in his truck, driving up to the Geist farm in the dead of night. There, he encounters Leonard, who says he used to work at Geist “before the a—holes got to it.” We jump to Leonard snapping at Audrey,...

(The following story contains spoilers for the second season of Amazon’s “Homecoming”)
Despite Amazon leaving the door open, Julia Roberts does not show up during the second season of “Homecoming,” which debuted on Friday. However, there was one brief window where Roberts’ Heidi Bergman could have made an appearance.
But it would have been a literal background role for Roberts, jokes Kyle Patrick Alvarez, who took over as director this season from Sam Esmail.
Toward the end of the third episode, the show picks up Walter Cruz’s (Stephan James) story at the exact place it left off in the Season 1 finale, where Heidi catches up with him in a diner. His first words, “Just a half a day left,” were also the last words he said at the end of last season, before showing him walking out of the diner. There’s very little that can be said about “Homecoming” Season 2 without venturing into spoiler territory, so let’s start with this: Anyone who loved the ambiguous ending of Amazon Prime’s first season, especially if you were taken by the profound connection between Walter Cruz (Stephan James) and Heidi Bergman (Julia Roberts), should enter into Season 2 with caution. It’s not that podcast creators and series showrunners Eli Horowitz and Micah Bloomberg provide a definitive answer as to what or who Walter remembers after his “treatment” at the Homecoming facility (though they kinda do), or even that they’re dismissive toward that poignant final moment so beautifully composed by Season 1 director Sam Esmail — far from it.
Everyone involved in crafting Season 2, including new full-time director Kyle Patrick Alvarez (“The Stanford Prison Experiment”), seems hellbent on telling a story that exists on the periphery of what came before. That helps...

Homecoming was one of my favorite shows of 2018. It made my Top Ten List for 2018.
It was quirky and original (even if based off of a popular podcast), and you could tell Sam Esmail poured his heart into the venture.
Julia Roberts starred (and executive produced), turning in one of her best performances to date.
Fast-forward to 2020 and the release of Homecoming Season 2.
I knew it would look different because Roberts would no longer lead (although she's still executive producing), and Esmail, while still on board, would no longer direct.
But the change is so significant as a result of their diminished roles that there's not much story to tell.
Season 2 centers around a new character named Alex (or Jackie), played by Janelle Monáe, who appears in a rowboat -- much like the protagonist in the original Friday the 13th movie -- with a confused look on her face.

Homecoming season 2 is on the way for another year of mystery and pelicans.
Homecoming is based on a podcast of the same name and is produced by Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail through his Anonymous Content production label. Season 1 of the show told the story of the Homecoming Transitional Support Center, a private facility working to treat veterans arriving home from war (and score a fat government contract in the process). Through caseworker Heidi Bergman’s interviews and interactions with young veteran Walter Cruz (Stephan James), it is slowly revealed that Homecoming’s mission seems more nefarious than previously realized.
Eli Horowitz and Micah Bloomberg will continue on as co-showrunners for Homecoming season 2. Kyle Patrick Alvarez will direct all episodes.
At first glance Homecoming Season 1 appeared to tell a very complete story, rendering any future seasons unnecessary. But a second season has always been in the cards for Homecoming. Amazon...

Based on the hit podcast from Gimlet Media, the contemporary sci-fi thriller “Homecoming” quickly became one of Amazon’s best original shows when it premiered in 2018. Starring Stephan James (“If Beale Street Could Talk”) in a breakout role that proved his leading man chops, “Homecoming” takes place on a secret government compound that is developing experimental Ptsd therapy and using American soldiers as test subjects. The first season starred Julia Roberts as a well-meaning therapist caught in the middle of it all, but from the looks of the newly released trailer, she won’t be returning for Season 2.
Not to worry, there’s plenty of intrigue to go around, and an exciting new star to deliver it: Janelle Monáe joins the cast for Season 2, promising new mysteries to unfold.

The second season of Amazon drama Homecoming will be more expansive than the first with much of the action taking place outside of the Homecoming Transitional Support Center.
The cast and crew of the psychological thriller, including new star Janelle Monáe, talked up the differences between season one of the show, which starred Julia Roberts, and the forthcoming season, which airs later this spring, at the Winter TCA press tour.
In the second season, Monáe’s character wakes in a rowboat adrift a lake, with no memory of how she got there — or even who she is. Her ensuing search for identity will lead her into the heart of the Geist Group, the unconventional wellness company behind the Homecoming Initiative.
Co-creator and exec producer Eli Horowitz admitted that the team, which also includes co-creator Michael Bloomberg, Kyle Patrick Alvarez and exec producer Sam Esmail learned a number of lessons between the two seasons.

Amazon is adding another new character for the second season of “Homecoming,” casting Chris Cooper as the head of The Geist Group, the shadowy conglomerate backing the Homecoming Transitional Support Center that’s at the center of the series.
Cooper will play Leonard Geist, an eccentric botanist, more at home in his greenhouse than in the boardrooms of the company he created. He joins previously announced “Homecoming” season two stars Janelle Monáe, Stephan James, and Hong Chau. The later two are returning from Season 1.
Geist Group was the company backing the Homecoming project, which ends up developing an experimental drug that “cures” veterans of Ptsd by physically erasing painful memories. While it’s initially stated that its purpose is to help veterans transition back to civilian life, the twist is that Geist is doing this in order to send them back out into the field.

Our Emmy odds have consistently placed Amazon’s drama series “Homecoming” among the strong contenders for Best Drama Series, Best Drama Actress (Julia Roberts) and Best Drama Supporting Actor (Bobby Cannavale). But might we be underestimating Stephan James for his role as a traumatized soldier? As of this writing one of the Expert journalists we’ve surveyed is going out on a limb for him to be nominated for Best Drama Actor.
Glenn Whipp (La Times) is currently predicting that James will pick up his first career bid. The actor stars as Walter Cruz, who returns from his military service with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and tries to process those experiences in a mysterious, experimental facility run by a well-meaning counselor (Roberts). But there’s more to the facility than meets the eye.

Every “Homecoming” outfit had a specific purpose to designer Catherine Marie Thomas. The Amazon series primarily takes place in an eerie facility for military veterans, where Julia Roberts plays Heidi Bergman, a friendly but stressed counselor who takes a special interest in one of the veterans, Walter Cruz (Stephan James). Thomas wanted to suggest an environment of free will as an illusion with the costuming on Walter and his fellow veterans. “What we wanted to accomplish was this comfortable environment where it seemed like they had a choice of what they wore in a parameter, sort of like a university,” Thomas explains. “You go to a store, you get issued the campus sweatshirt, the shorts, this kind of branding atmosphere.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Thomas above.

Let’s get this out of the way at the start: It would have been amazing to see what Julia Roberts continued to do in the role of Heidi Bergman, the caseworker at the heart of the Amazon series “Homecoming.” There aren’t many 2018 acting moments better than Roberts behind a desk at the end of the season’s ultra-pivotal Episode 8.
But news broke Wednesday morning that Roberts would not be returning to the show, leaving the existing ten episodes as the sole chronicle of her contributions. Perhaps this is an attempt to head off a flurry of Season 2 speculation at the Emmys Fyc tour that is almost certainly still coming later in the spring. But given the foundation the show has laid down in its freshman season, there’s still reason to believe the show can succeed in Roberts’ absence.

When in 2017 Julia Roberts signed on to star in her first series, Homecoming, she made a one-year acting deal for the project, from Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail and Universal Cable Prods. It has been the case for many big stars who have ventured into television over the past couple of years, and the storyline of her character was crafted with that in mind.

Warning: This post contains major spoilers for Season 1 of Amazon’s Homecoming. Unless you have a plate of memory-erasing gnocchi nearby, proceed with caution.
Amazon’s thriller Homecoming messed with our minds all season long… but the final scene just about broke our hearts.
The freshman season ended with Julia Roberts’ Heidi tracking down her favorite client Walter Cruz to a remote California mountain town, clutching a road map she thought might jog his memories of their time together. But when she ran into him at a local diner, and saw how happy he was, she hid the map from...

(Warning: This story contains spoilers for the first season of Amazon’s “Homecoming”)
Amazon’s adaption of Gimlet Media’s “Homecoming” podcast remains pretty faithful to its source material — until about halfway through. From there, it goes in a completely different direction, completely abandoning the second half of the podcast’s narrative.
“We wanted to intentionally sort of deviate from the podcast at that point,” Sam Esmail, who executive produced the series alongside the podcast’s creators Micah Bloomberg and Eli Horowitz, and directed all 10 episodes, tells TheWrap.
“Homecoming” is based on Bloomberg and Horowitz’s two-season (12 episodes total) podcast for Gimlet Media, which centers on Heidi Bergman (Julia Roberts), a caseworker at the Homecoming Transitional Support Center — a facility helping soldiers transition back to civilian life — and her work with one of those soldiers, Walter Cruz (Stephan James). Amazon picked up the show for two seasons, but whatever the second season looks like,...

Stephan James is campaigning for Best Actor Oscar honors for his breakthrough role in the upcoming drama “If Beale Street Could Talk.” That could be a challenge for an actor so young — he’ll only be 25-years-old on Oscar nominations morning, which would make him the seventh youngest nominee of all time. But if any voters are concerned about his experience, he has already been working for years, and they can also see him this fall in a second starring role in Amazon’s “Homecoming.”
The streaming series stars James as Walter Cruz, a soldier being treated for post traumatic stress disorder at a facility run by a possibly misguided therapist (Julia Roberts). The first season of the series premiered on November 2 and was acclaimed by critics, with James singled out for his “innate warmth,” “easy charisma” and seemingly “effortless” acting choices.

It all began with a podcast.
At least, that's the case for a significant swath of people walking into Homecoming, the new Amazon drama based on the Gimlet Media podcast of the same name. The series centers on the titular initiative meant to help military veterans struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder, by way of a Florida-based facility staffed with friendly therapists such as Heidi Bergman (Julia Roberts). The patients include Walter Cruz, soft-spoken and kind-hearted, whose playful demeanor makes strangers feel like lifelong friends — and can even challenge the professional relationship between therapist and client.

Homecoming is a hypnotic blend of old-school and new. It’s fronted by Julia Roberts, one of the last of the capital-m Movie Stars hailing from an era when the idea of doing a TV series would be unthinkable. It’s directed by Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail, who makes half of each episode look like a loving pastiche of Hitchcock and paranoid Seventies thrillers, while the other half looks like it was shot on an iPhone. Its story is adapted from a Gimlet Media podcast, and it remains taut...

Movie star Julia Roberts finally finds her way to the small screen with a buzzy series from Sam Esmail and an exciting role the likes of which Roberts hasn't had the opportunity to flex her muscles in a long time.
Based on the fictional podcast of the same name and adapted for the screen by creators Eli Horowitz and Micah Bloomberg, Homecoming shuffles viewers between two time periods in the life of Heidi Bergman, a caseworker at a center helping assimilate recently returning veterans back into civilian life.
In 2018, Heidi is a successful, stable, and caring counselor, if a bit harried and overworked. Jump four years into the future, and she's waitressing at a waterside seafood restaurant, living with her mother, and sugarcoating the past. What happened to cause such a shift?
Homecoming is a mystery that relies heavily on the chemistry of the characters, and Roberts works beautifully with her co-stars.

Stephan James, who appeared in “Selma” and “Race,” admits he’s been a “little bit busy” balancing Barry Jenkins’ “If Beale Street Could Talk” with a starring role in Amazon’s podcast-to-tv adaptation “Homecoming,” opposite Julia Roberts.
How did you get cast?
I got a script I thought was pretty phenomenal. So I listened to the “Homecoming” podcast, which is the first podcast I had ever listened to. I didn’t know what a podcast even was. But it was incredible! I put my audition on tape for Sam Esmail, the director, and he loved it — and the next thing you know, I was in a chemistry read with Julia Roberts.
How did that chemistry read go?
Everyone asked me if I was nervous. I don’t even know if I really took in what I was getting myself into. You get so caught up in memorizing your lines, you...

It doesn’t take much for Monday to start off with a slight bit of paranoia, dread, and uncertainty. But just in case, Amazon’s offering up one last look at its upcoming drama series “Homecoming.”
Starring Julia Roberts and based on the popular Gimlet podcast of the same name, the show takes a deep dive into an eerie mystery lodged inside a government health facility. Heidi Bergman (Roberts) follows the thread of a shadowy conspiracy that somehow involves her work at Homecoming and an old patient Walter Cruz (Stephan James).
Following on her trail? Agent Thomas Carrasco (Shea Whigham) asking plenty of questions about Heidi’s past work. Heidi’s old boss Colin Belfast (Bobby Cannavale) also quickly gets caught up in the web of intrigue as well.
As IndieWire’s Ben Travers pointed out in his review out of Tiff last month, “Homecoming” has some nice nods to thrillers of decades past.

We’ve gotten used to big movie stars doing TV for a while now… but still, Julia Roberts starring in a TV series is a pretty big deal, right? She’s not wasting her time on the small screen, either: Her new Amazon drama Homecoming — debuting Friday, Nov. 2 on the streaming service — is a smartly layered, coolly effective thriller that gets more intriguing as it goes, slowly unraveling a mystery made up of intricately interlocking clues.

Have you every forgotten something? Something monumental?
In the official trailer for Amazon’s new thriller series “Homecoming,” Julia Roberts’ character Heidi Bergman has forgotten something pretty huge. What exactly that is we’ll find out when the series premieres in November.
Heidi (Roberts) is a caseworker at the Homecoming Transitional Support Center, which helps soldiers assimilate back into civilian life. Stephan James plays Walter Cruz, a soldier staying at the facility who ready to move on with his life, and Bobby Cannavale oversees Heidi and the facility.

At first glance, “Homecoming” seems to be a cocktail of buzzwords. Take one part transmedia origin story (“based on the popular Gimlet Media podcast…”), add one part movie star trying her hand at television (Julia Roberts), mix well with an established TV auteur (“Mr. Robot” creator Sam Esmail), and serve. In practice, however, those ostensibly disparate elements come together to make sharp slices of truly eerie drama. Even when it gets a little too mesmerized by its own stylistic trickery, it’s hard not to get sucked in by “Homecoming’s” haunting mission creep.

The podcast world is making its biggest leap yet into the land of TV. And it’s bringing Sam Esmail and Julia Roberts with it.
Amazon released another look at its upcoming drama “Homecoming” on Friday, including Roberts’ lead role as Heidi Bergman, a psychologist looking to uncover the truth behind a top-secret veterans facility. The story is adapted from the Gimlet podcast of the same name, which debuted in late 2016.
“Shots Fired” alum Stephan James co-stars as Walter Cruz, a soldier struggling with his memories of military service. Bobby Cannavale (who also appeared on the most recent season of “Mr. Robot”) is also set to play Colin Belfast, Heidi’s aggressive boss tasked with keeping her and Cruz’s potential reintroduction to civilian life on course. Neither of these other characters appear in this teaser, but it does feature the filtered strains of Radiohead’s “Everything in Its Right Place.

One of things that makes “Homecoming” great is what it can’t show you.
As one of the driving creative forces behind the most popular scripted series in podcasting, Eli Horowitz explains that it took a while to figure out how to make that limitation work to his advantage. Horowitz created “Homecoming” alongside Micah Bloomberg, with whom he also wrote and directs every episode of the series. As the show releases the premiere of its second season on Wednesday, he thinks they’ve finally started to figure out how this world operates.
“In audio, certain things are harder: establishing the setting, establishing who’s talking, giving each scene its own texture,” Horowitz said, in a recent IndieWire interview. “At first those seem like obstacles or limitations: chores you have to do. What we’re starting to get better at is using them as creative prompts. How can set this in...
