The Early Years
While exhibition of films in Calcutta can be dated back to 1896, when one Professor Stevens screened the Lumiere programmes at Star Theatre, it was only in the first decade of the twentieth century that Bengal had its first indigenous film-maker—Hiralal Sen. Calcutta at the time had a strong tradition of professional theatre, and theatre houses served as outlets for films. The earliest screenings were held in theatre houses where films appeared as a double bill attraction alongside the plays. Influential theatre owners, like for example Amarendra Nath Dutta of Classic Theatre, encouraged the production of films by allowing Hiralal Sen to photograph his stage productions, which were then advertised as ‘superfine pictures from our world-renowned plays’ and exhibited. Amitabh Bachchan
The 18th edition of the Kolkata International Film Festival will host a special section in the honour of Amitabh Bachchan. The festival will be inaugurated by Bachchan along with Shahrukh Khan.
Six of Bachchan starrer films: Saath Hindustani, Abhiman, Saudagar, Deewar, Black, and Cheeni Kum will be screened under the special section “Big Story” (Amitabh Bachchan).
The festival will run from 10th to 17th November, 2012. The eight day festival will host 170 films from 62 countries.
This year the festival will hold various special sections. Some of them are:
Centenary Tribute
This section will screen 13 films of Michelangelo Antonioni.

The Mumbai Film Festival has announced its programming highlights for its 14the edition running from 18th to 25th October, 2012. The highlights include Palme d’Or winner of the year Amour by Michael Haneke, Cosmopolis by David Cronenberg, The Angels’ Share by Ken Loach, Beasts of the Southern Wild by Benh Zeitlin, A Throw of Dice by Franz Osten, The Leopard by Luchino Visconti, Once Upon a Time in America by Sergio Leone, On the Road by Walter Salles, Rust and Bone by Jacques Audiard and Blancanieves (Snow White) by Pablo Berger. The complete lineup will be announced on Monday, 24th September, 2012.
