How does one even begin to define the 2000s in Hindi cinema? The decade that started with “Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai!” and ended with “3 Idiots?” The decade that gave us Bipasha Basu and Rakhi Sawant and took away Madhuri Dixit and Aishwarya Rai? The decade of “Tere Bina” but also of “No Entry?” Cinema contains multitudes, but the aughts in Bollywood were a multiverse, and nowhere is that clearer than in the best musical numbers of the decade.
Curating this list was not easy — just ask the editors who waited patiently for a draft that I was not able to produce because I was busy swapping out “Kal Ho Naa Ho” songs until the last possible second. Some basic guidelines: This is a list of musical numbers, Not songs — the song obviously matters,...

By celebrating her 90th birthday with a live performance in Dubai on September 8, Asha Bhosle will be proving yet again that she not only has a tremendous zest for life, but also an ebullience that has enabled her to rule Hindi film music across many genres, from classical to cabaret numbers, sing for generations of composers and audiences, and bring home every award that counts, barring the Bharat Ratna, which she rightfully deserves.
I first met Asha Bhosle after the release of ‘Hare Krishna Hare Ram’ (1971), where I was assisting Dev Anand, and met her last as recently as in 2019 at a music festival in Jaipur, where she was surrounded by friends and admirers, and yet she mentioned to all those present how long our association has been.
I have had the good fortune of writing the lyrics of two of her ageless hit numbers — ‘Jab Chhaye Mera Jadoo’ (‘Lootmaar’; 1980) and ‘Suniye,...

Introduction: The year was 2013. I got an invite to attend a programme in the Sahir Ludhianvi auditorium in Govt. College Ludhiana. It was a pleasant surprise. I found the auditorium full of fans of Sahir Ludhianvi who created such a visible memoir for this son of soil, that four hours just slipped like a blip and there was no hurry to conclude it! I had then decided to write about this legendary poet and lyricist and the brain gave a gentle nudge to write about him as a part of the series celebrating 75 years of Independence through cinema. The occasion served when his death anniversary was celebrated on 24 October 2022.
After having returned from Pakistan good, he came to Mumbai to try his luck as a lyricist. Though he made his debut as a lyricist in 1948 with Azadi Kee Rah Mein. 1950 was the year when he announced his arrival with a...

Unlike Hollywood, where musicals are a separate genre, no Hindi film is complete without a full suite of songs – and they are what keeps a film alive in the minds of the people long after it has met its fate at the box office. Amitabh Bachchan fans may not recall the plots of his old landmark films, but the songs still strike a chord.
On the Big B’s 80th birthday, let us revisit some of his musical hits from his first decade of super and megastardom, where the songs were not just romantic interludes with his lady love of the moment, but also served various other purposes.
These helped him to express a range of moods, reveal his innermost yearnings, his philosophy of life, advancing the plot as action takes place in the background or surreptitiously, or evoke humour to lighten the mood.

Song remakes are a way of Bollywood life in 2019. Certainly over the last few years every film has had at least 1 remake within its album, whether that be a re-do of an old great song, a re-interpretation of a pop song or song originally written for another language, or even just a mashup tune that reminds us of a bunch of songs. Each in their own way can be good as at the very least they remind those who know of the original song and those who didn’t weren’t given a chance to explore the reason why they warranted a remake. Below is a list of those remakes – the ones that work as their own songs, ones that joined our playlists even knowing the originals that they came from because they in themselves were good.

Actress Sonakshi Sinha, who has featured in the video of the recreated version of "Mungda" song, says that makers repackage iconic songs for the current generation.
Her latest dance number "Mungda" for the film Total Dhamaal has earned the wrath of the fans of the original number featuring Helen.
"Mungda" was originally sung by Usha Mangeshkar with music by Rajesh Roshan and lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri.
The song has been recreated by singers Jyotica Tangri, Shaan and Subhro Ganguly and music director duo Gourov-Roshin.
Reacting to the criticism, Sonakshi said: "Even I like the original better and there is no comparison with that. When we recreate a song, that time we don't think that we will make a particular song better than the original one because when you are recreating an iconic song then there is no point making comparison with the recreated song."

Reacting to the criticism, Sonakshi said: "Even I like the original better and there is no comparison with that. When we recreate a song, that time we don't think that we will make a particular song better than the original one because when you are recreating an iconic song then there is no point making comparison with the recreated song."

Hrithik Roshan is joining hands with filmmaker father Rakesh Roshan and music composer uncle Rajesh Roshan to pay a special tribute to his late grandfather and legendary musician Roshan in Mumbai. Some popular singers of the 90s like Alka Yagnik, Udit Narayan, Kumar Sanu and Abhijeet will be paying this tribute by recreating some of Roshan’s iconic numbers from the 50s and 60s including the qawwali genre that he was famous for. Reportedly, the Roshans are also contemplating on roping in a top playback singer to recreate his popular track ‘Aeiri main to prem diwani’ from Nau Bahar.

Real life brothers, Ronit and Rohit Roy, will be seen, for the first time, as reel siblings in the Hrithik Roshan-starrer, Kaabil.
Playing villains in the revenge drama, the actors have gone all out to bring out the worst in them for their respective roles in Kaabil. “When I heard the script, I did not get back to Sanjay Gupta and Rakesh sir. I was shocked that they’d imagined me in negative role. I spent a sleepless night thinking it’s a wrong role and how I should turn down their offer. When I spoke to Ronit, he told me it’s one of the best roles I’ve ever been offered. And it’s just a character. I don’t know how people will react when they watch the movie,” said Rohit Roy.

We have a new and very cool song video from the Hrithik Roshan and Yami Gautam-starrer Kaabil. What is so cool is that the song and the chreography have a very international flavor. How you may ask? Well… Mon Amour, (My Love in French) sees the beautiful couple do the romanctic Spanish dance the Tango to their hearts content as they take baby steps to build the foundation of their relationship. Vishal Dadlani’s vocals and music composed by Rajesh Roshan makes this song a perfect dance number.

To prepare for his newest film, actor Hrithik Roshan really worked hard geeting comletely into the character in Kaabil. The actor took on the challenge of playing a visually challenged man and to make sure he got everything right, the star spent hours interacting with people who have spent their lives in darkness.
Talking about the experience Hrithik said, “When you shut your eyes and start absorbing the world around you, you realise how your other senses are enhanced to another level. Now, if you blindfold me, I can walk around my house in complete darkness. Initially, I’d bump into things, but now, I can find my way smoothly. Producer Rakesh Roshan is already looking at a release date for his film Kaabil. To be directed by Sanjay Gupta, Kaabil will be shot and completed in three months at a stretch from April-June. However, the release will only happen next year. Explains Rakesh Roshan, "All the major release dates this year are already taken. So we've reserved January 26, 2017 as the release date for Kaabil. We are in no hurry release our film." And no, Kaabil has no patriotic flavour to go with the Republic Day mood. About the unlikely merger of the Roshans with Sanjay Gupta, Rakesh says, "Sanjay Gupta narrated a story written by Vijay Mishra which both Hrithik Roshan and I liked. It is something Hrithik has not done before. It is in the thriller genre. But it's different, and yet mainstream, somewhat like the films that I direct which are massy and yet removed from the expected.

It is believed that Amitabh Bachchan's first song is Mere Paas Aao Mere Dosto Ek Kissa Suno.... from the 1979 hit film Mr. Natwarlal. Actually it was filmmaker Rakesh Kumar and music director Rajesh Roshan, who had cajoled Amitabh Bachchan to sing the song with the intention of exploiting Amitabh Bachchan's popularity among the children. The idea hit the bull's eye and rest is history.
However, few may know that before Mr. Natwarlal, it was eminent singer Mukesh, (who gave such hit songs like Mera Joota Hai Japani... Sawan Ka Mahina.... Chandan Sa Bana...), who had discovered a
singer in Amitabh Bachchan and motivated him to try his hand at singing!

The year 2013 wasn’t without its awful dreck, unlistenable songs, and dreadfully earnest star sons trying their hand at acting. It was also the year where trumpeting your own horn (looking at you Mr Sajid Khan!) proved to an ironically bad choice, promotion tours became exhaustively boring, and albums that made our ears bleed. There were many terrible films and debuts that made us cringe, and shake our fists at the wasted potential. Here once again are the Bollywood Razzies of 2013.
Awful Actress – Pallavi Sharda
It was quite astonishing that Sharda managed to bodge up a dream debut with Ranbir Kapoor in Besharam. While the film was hyped to be a rollicking comedy, Sharda was picked out from the crop of Bollywood actresses for Abhinav Kashyap’s film away from Dabangg mania. Sharda looked completely uncomfortable in her big role, where the three Kapoors tried to salvage the crumbling story and bad writing.

Usually people fear the moment they have to take back their words but when it comes to films I genuinely welcome someone proving me wrong, if it means that a film is better than I expected. No denying that I pegged Krrish 3 to be the biggest disaster of all times. Why? Well to me Koi Mil Gaya and Krrish were mega disasters so to expect the third film in the series to impress was just unreasonable. However having just returned from my viewing of the film I’m all smiles and can happily declare, I was wrong!
The film boasts of a lot of genuine creativity which I didn’t expect since the previous films have been too borrowed. But Krrish 3 sticks to the genre and brings in the essential elements we want from superhero entertainers with a bit of desi tadka. There’s a rich human and...

From the time when Rakesh Roshan decided to turn a filmmaker, one thing that has been a predominant motif of his films is the music. One of the first things you notice about the "Krrish 3" soundtrack is that it is lengthy. Composed by Rajesh Roshan, it has seven tracks, including two remixes. While a couple of songs are just average, some are interesting.
The first is the title track "Krrish krrish". Wow! Singer Anirudh Bhola has a presence in the song, but it is Mamta Sharma who gets the attention. The piano plays the signature tune and it sounds.

After being almost two years in the making, Rakesh Roshan’s Krrish 3 finally sees the light of the day this November the 4th. As expected brother Rajesh Roshan does the music for the film. Some say that Pancham, R D Burman, felt that one of the most impressive musicians around is Rajesh Roshan. Whilst the composer has given us some classic albums in the 90s, Koyla, Karan Arjun and Papa Kehte Hai, to name a few, come the millennium we hear very little from the composer except for his work for his brother’s films and the occasional exceptions. Time to see if his latest album for the home production lives up to the high expectations.
Mamta Sharma (‘Munni Badnaam’ – Dabangg) opens the album with Krrish Title track along with Anirudh Bola and Rajesh Roshan’s contribution, although Mama remains the leading voice of the track. Rajesh mixes classical Indian music themes with techno.
