Jan 01 2018 A surprisingly fabulous film. Good kitsch, humour, and heart warming moments. Follows a young man recently freed from imprisonment from people who stole him as a child and claimed to be his parents. He takes to a show they used to make for him, called Brigsby Bear, and upon release, obsesses over completing the show. Heartwarming tale. 8/10

86 Metascore

Director: Paul Thomas Anderson | Stars: Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams, Jesse Plemons

Votes: 186,224 | Gross: $16.38M

Jan 01 2018 An interesting character study of a cult leader and his protegee. Deep, dark, surreal in some respects. Very well shot, great acting, and interesting moments. I did feel at times the film was being overly odd for its own sake, and sometimes this detracted from my enjoyment of the film. However, minor complaints aside, a wholly entertaining, well shot, and well crafted art house film. 7/10

3. First Reformed (2017)

R | 113 min | Drama, Mystery, Thriller

86 Metascore

A minister of a small congregation in upstate New York grapples with mounting despair brought on by tragedy, worldly concerns and a tormented past.

Director: Paul Schrader | Stars: Ethan Hawke, Amanda Seyfried, Cedric The Entertainer, Victoria Hill

Votes: 62,589 | Gross: $3.45M

Jan 02 2018 An interesting film. Slow burner, slow build up, messed up ending. Follows a preacher who slowly becomes an environmental radical due to his involvement with a troubled environmentalist and his pregnant wife. The movie becomes twisted and tangled slowly, as the preacher begins to despair over circumstances. Great film, well shot, great characters. 7/10

4. Gemini (II) (2017)

R | 93 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

71 Metascore

Director: Aaron Katz | Stars: Lola Kirke, Zoë Kravitz, John Cho, Greta Lee

Votes: 5,666 | Gross: $0.20M

Jan 02 2018 A stylish murder mystery that follows a Hollywood starlets assistant as she grapples with the mysterious murder of her boss. The assistant is framed, and she is on the run from the law and trying to figure out what happened. The story and plot are suitably mysterious, and the acting from the main character Jill, (played by Lola Kirke) is fabulous. Good style and score as well. The ending was quite underwhelming (IMO), though, and did detract some point from the film. Enjoyable though. 6/10

5. Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)

PG-13 | 135 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

62 Metascore

During an adventure in the criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his future co-pilot Chewbacca and Lando Calrissian years before joining the Rebel Alliance.

Director: Ron Howard | Stars: Alden Ehrenreich, Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover

Votes: 379,225 | Gross: $213.77M

An enjoyable Star Wars film with some interesting vistas, characters and action. A fun and worthwhile flick to be sure. Lacks some of the more deep story elements of some of the earlier story elements. Even so, the science fiction is fun, the characters are fun, and the story is fair. Worth a watch for sure, and a continuation of the solid new flicks coming out in the franchise. 7/10

6. Mary and the Witch's Flower (2017)

PG | 103 min | Animation, Adventure, Family

74 Metascore

Based on "The Little Broomstick" by Mary Stewart, a strange flower grants a girl magic powers.

Director: Hiromasa Yonebayashi | Stars: Hana Sugisaki, Ryunosuke Kamiki, Yûki Amami, Fumiyo Kohinata

Votes: 16,165 | Gross: $2.42M

A wonderfully animated and fantastical film in the spirit of Studio Ghibli. Follows a young girl as she stumbles upon magic, and seeks to stop an evil duo from completing a sinister experiment. Fun, cute, well animated, with a good story. Characters were a bit cliched, and the animation, although very interesting, is similar to Ghibli and therefore nothing totally new. Still, a very good film. 7/10

7. Old Stone (2016)

Unrated | 80 min | Thriller

72 Metascore

A psychological thriller about a taxi driver battling bureaucracy and legal manipulation in China.

Director: Johnny Ma | Stars: Gang Chen, Nai An, Hongwei Wang, Zebin Zhang

Votes: 606 | Gross: $0.00M

A slow burning film about a taxi driver, who, through no fault of his own, hits a motorcycle driver. He is faulted with the accident, and subsequently is required to pay the mans medical bills. As the bills mount up, he begins to lose control of his life. A slowly paced movie, that is well shot and acted. The commentary is sometimes ham-fisted, and the film is often very slow in parts - too much even for me sometimes. Even so, it is stylistic and interesting. Worth a watch. 6/10

8. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018)

PG-13 | 128 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

51 Metascore

When the island's dormant volcano begins roaring to life, Owen and Claire mount a campaign to rescue the remaining dinosaurs from this extinction-level event.

Director: J.A. Bayona | Stars: Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Rafe Spall, Justice Smith

Votes: 343,928 | Gross: $417.72M

A largely boring film. Follows the pair from the previous film, as they are coopted into trying to rescue the dinosaurs from Isla Nubar, which is being destroyed by a volcano. Double crossed, raptors, business men, blah blah blah. Boring, dumb message about rescuing man made abominations? Cause Nature?? Dumb. 4/10

9. The Adventurers (2017)

108 min | Action, Adventure, Crime

47 Metascore

The world's top thieves join forces to pull off the heist of a lifetime. But when they find themselves pursued across Europe by a legendary French detective, they'll have to take their game to the next level.

Director: Stephen Fung | Stars: Andy Lau, Shu Qi, Jingchu Zhang, Yo Yang

Votes: 3,356 | Gross: $0.22M

A very enjoyable heist movie. Cliched in many ways, with some hammy moments and some ridiculous technology. Still, the camp was good. The characters were enjoyable in a "shut your brain off" kind of way. The heist elements were enjoyable. It was a film where I was rooting for the main characters. I was surprised how much I liked this movie, and the cinematography was solid to boot. 7/10

10. Upgrade (2018)

R | 100 min | Action, Sci-Fi, Thriller

67 Metascore

Set in the near-future, technology controls nearly all aspects of life. But when the world of Grey, a self-labeled technophobe, is turned upside down, his only hope for revenge is an experimental computer chip implant.

Director: Leigh Whannell | Stars: Logan Marshall-Green, Melanie Vallejo, Steve Danielsen, Abby Craden

Votes: 206,818 | Gross: $11.98M

Jan 13 2019 A highly enjoyable science fiction film. Elements of films like Drive, Blade Runner, and Total Recall. It has very realistic and imaginative technology - a believable cyberpunk style. As mentioned, the world-building worked for me. The acting was solid, the action solid, and there were some schlocky horror elements which were wholly enjoyable. Solid 8/10 - one of my favourites this month,

11. Alpha (II) (2018)

PG-13 | 96 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

63 Metascore

In the prehistoric past, a young man struggles to return home after being separated from his tribe during a buffalo hunt. He finds a similarly lost wolf companion and starts a friendship that would change humanity.

Director: Albert Hughes | Stars: Kodi Smit-McPhee, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, Marcin Kowalczyk, Jens Hultén

Votes: 66,557 | Gross: $35.85M

Jan 13 2019 A fairly enjoyable movie all told. Bad CGI in many places, a limitation of the budget. Much of the story elements were not super engaging in some aspects. Even so, some very interesting visuals despite some lackluster CGI. The acting was believable and the world felt real. The "man and his dog" story element felt enjoyable and even touching in some aspects. Honestly enjoyed this movie, despite its visual shortcomings. A high 6/10, and recommended.

12. In This Corner (and Other Corners) of the World (2016)

PG-13 | 129 min | Animation, Drama, Family

73 Metascore

A spirited 18-year-old woman is married off to a man she barely knows as she combats the daily struggles of living in Hiroshima during World War II.

Director: Sunao Katabuchi | Stars: Non, Ava Pickard, Kenna Pickard, Karen Strassman

Votes: 12,453 | Gross: $0.17M

A solid and charming anime film. A bittersweet story of life, love and loss. Takes place in wartime Japan near Hiroshima. Tells the story of a young girl who marries into a family outside her native city. She moves there, and learns to live a new life as a wife, all while pursuing her passion for sketch artistry. Excellent and unique animation, a sweet story, and some cool visuals and ideas. 7/10

13. Bullet to the Head (2012)

R | 92 min | Action, Crime, Thriller

48 Metascore

After watching their respective partners die, a New Orleans hitman and a Washington, D.C. detective form an alliance in order to bring down their common enemy.

Director: Walter Hill | Stars: Sylvester Stallone, Jason Momoa, Christian Slater, Sung Kang

Votes: 52,441 | Gross: $9.48M

A horrid action flick. Overly stylized to the point of looking bad. The acting was awful, with Stallone leading the pack in the worst way possible. Racism abounds as well, which was a disgusting addition that added no humour or entertainment. Follows a hitman and a cop as they team up to take down corrupt local officials that killed there partners. Cliched, dull, lifeless, ugly, stupid, inept. A terrible film. 3/10

14. I Kill Giants (2017)

Not Rated | 106 min | Drama, Fantasy, Thriller

74 Metascore

Barbara Thorson struggles through life by escaping into a fantasy life of magic and monsters.

Director: Anders Walter | Stars: Madison Wolfe, Zoe Saldana, Imogen Poots, Sydney Wade

Votes: 33,005

A unique and interesting film. The acting and drama were superb, but the fantasy elements, although interesting, lacked quality and, in some case, character. This movie was quite similar to A Monster Calls - a very similar film about grappling with grief, and portraying it as a monster. Even so, this was an enjoyable film, with unique elements. Worth a watch. 6/10

15. The Equalizer 2 (2018)

R | 121 min | Action, Crime, Thriller

50 Metascore

Robert McCall serves an unflinching justice for the exploited and oppressed, but how far will he go when that is someone he loves?

Director: Antoine Fuqua | Stars: Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, Ashton Sanders, Orson Bean

Votes: 197,779 | Gross: $102.08M

27-01-2019 An entertaining sequel. Action packed, gritty, stylistic. Denzel Washington is great as usual. The story was largely weak - too grand for the character and story, with the previous film feeling more appropriate. Even so, largely entertaining. 6/10

16. Shallow Grave (1994)

R | 89 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

67 Metascore

Three friends discover their new flatmate dead but loaded with cash.

Director: Danny Boyle | Stars: Kerry Fox, Christopher Eccleston, Ewan McGregor, Ken Stott

Votes: 66,234 | Gross: $2.88M

January 28 2019 An interesting film about a group of roommates who discover a large amount of money. The film is a look at the spiraling morality and debauchery of the group, and what they would do for money. A good film; interesting story, good acting, and solid set up. Well shot, with some great visual moments, a tense score, and some interesting cuts. Well worth a watch. 7/10

17. Rebecca (1940)

Approved | 130 min | Drama, Mystery, Romance

86 Metascore

A self-conscious woman juggles adjusting to her new role as an aristocrat's wife and avoiding being intimidated by his first wife's spectral presence.

Director: Alfred Hitchcock | Stars: Laurence Olivier, Joan Fontaine, George Sanders, Judith Anderson

Votes: 146,727 | Gross: $4.36M

January 31 2019 A solid Hitchcock film. Good gothic tale of a woman who marries a rich man with a dark past, and a dead wife. A story of distrust, love, and troubled pasts. Well shot with some very memorable scenes. Great acting. Great story. Great score. 8/10

18. The Man Who Wasn't There (2001)

R | 116 min | Crime, Drama

73 Metascore

A laconic, chain-smoking barber blackmails his wife's boss and lover for money to invest in dry cleaning, but his plan goes terribly wrong.

Director: Joel Coen | Stars: Billy Bob Thornton, Frances McDormand, Michael Badalucco, James Gandolfini

Votes: 115,011 | Gross: $7.49M

January 31 2019 An interesting film shot in the style of a film noir. Slow moving crime drama about a barber who's own action and inaction leads to disaster for everyone around him. His intentions are often pure in some way. Well shot and acted, and the portrayal of the time period is interesting and adaptive. Characters are well fleshed out, and feel very Cohen-brother (if that makes sense). Quirky I guess. Fun film, well worth a watch. 7/10
