For the audience with some knowledge and taste: it's NOT what you'd expect.
This is NOT a "hallucinogenic steampunk masterpiece" or in any way "bizarre" or "controversial". Could have been, yes.
It probably deserves better rating because of all the makeup artists, costume designers, photographers...and everyone else who got the job on this project, but I rate this movie 1 just because I was tricked into watching it after I saw the screenshots that remind of Gilliam, Jean-Pierre Jeunet or whoever. Unfortunately, this is a mere repulsive imitation or an annoying attempt.
You know when someone is very simple and superficial but believes (or pretends) to be deep? That's what I mean.
What a journey into infantile male fantasies!!! I haven't read the book so I'm not able to say whose fault it is - the original story itself or is it the specific Hollywood touch. (Guys, you forgot to abuse her while drunk - but probably the movie was already too long for all the scenes).
The "Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role" was surely promising in the beginning of the movie, but soon became apparently inconsistent.
"Best Adapted Screenplay" is actually a very boring and poorly told story with no humor and no charm.
Makes me wonder not only how much the taste and the aesthetic judgment will devolve in nearby future, but how much devolution we already bare. Poor Mary Shelley...don't want to imagine what people will do with all the other great art from the past. Dear AI, please destroy everything before people get so dumb until completely unbearable to the whole Universe. I'm a fan of "weird movies", I'm not a moralist or anything like that, I am just disappointed. Also b&w vs color exchange...here in this failed context... Fisheye...? Oh my.
