A beautifully done regretful watch
9 February 2024
This is a movie that I really feel I want my hour back.

Look, the graphics are stunning and the acting top notch, although a little wooden in parts...

There is the usual poor science fiction to make a scientist cringe. Even just "why do they do that?" stuff that makes little to no sense.

Yet after watching this journey, I find it just a huge letdown. This is really inter-personal stuff and character building stuff. It just happens to occur around space that's all.

The movie has lead me lacking. I really feel after a reasonable beginning, it has let itself down enormously and if I watched it at a cinema I would want my money back.

Mortal Kombat (1995)
9/10
An awesome action movie that does the game and series justice
1 November 2023
Such a good screen adaption of the game. It is near perfect. This is a fighting movie, a "guilty pleasure"...

It is meant to be a little Cheesy a little camp but a fun watch. It excells at this.

You have the main original Mortal Kombat characters participate in the outworld tournament and all actors take it seriours. Christopher Lambert nails being a god very well. Over the top, but keeping in character.

The other actors are first class, for Amatuer no names as most are, that is impressive.

Unlike say Street fighter, the plot has structure and it's a well developed story. Exciting and reasonable twists...

The scenery and effects are near flawless (yes there are gaps and you can see the small amount of CGI is very 95 CGI). That said most effects are outstanding.

Best movie for 12 year old boys and fans of Mortal Kombat. I have watched it at least 5 times and still immensily enjoy it.

Disjointed... Denise Scott good, but cast not gelling.
21 October 2023
Started at Episode 3 and not the pilot after reading reviews here.

Denise Scott is an Amazing talent and really can do justice to Ruth Cracknell's performance.

Matt O'Kine though tries to be Arthur/Gunston from the original series and... IT DOESN'T WORK.

Seriously Matt O'Kine interacts with anyone else and it's funny. Yet he interacts with Denise and it's just awful. He slips into his characterisation of "Norm Gunston's" Arthur and it's just painful.

Matt O'Kine needed to commit to either being a classic "Arthur" or just be himself. He can't then interact with Denise because he isn't himself and can't do Arthur. It's that connection which is missing, which is a shame as other character interactions are quite good.

It's very Disjointed, has it's moments, Honestly could have been better if it did it's own thing.

*watched the pilot. Don't start there.

Great for being so different
3 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This movie offers something unusual. The sheriff was meant to find the bad guy and the deadbeat was meant to run away with his girl and the 2 Mil.

Yet, there was no sweet ending here.

There was no Bitter-sweet ending even.

What we saw was something more real. Stories that don't push the plot, real happenings in which characters don't know what's happened out of their sight.

That's life. Or a lot more like life then most Hollywood films.

Javier's acting was excellent, so was Bolwin. Tommy Lee Jones plays Tommy Lee Jones but really throws himself into the part...yet it's Javier's creepiness that sticks with you.

The movie hits on several philosophical points. None so subtle in Javier using an air gun to kill people as a slaughter house kills cattle.

The only weakness I find is it delves into too many "Go Nowhere" conversations. Yes they expose a bit of the Philosophy behind the plot...but IMHO they were a bit boring.

A great film and thought provokingly good.

So desperately wants to be Apocolpyse now.
4 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This is a good movie that could have been a great movie.

Lets get the trivialities out of the way: acting - Excellent.

Camera - great, it's shakey get over it.

Scenery/background/etc. All top quality.

It's just not sure what Movie it wants to be. Wanting to be a Bomb disposal movie, but nah well go back to being regular troops because that's more exciting.

Yet. It's the plot that lets it down... Badly. Really badly. The movie could be renamed "Americans go on holiday's in Middle eastern Hell Hole!". It's evil brown people being "rescued" by wonderful USA who are the good guys doing good things.

^in this though it has clear realism to parallel the Iraqi war. Clearly they are all good guys, the rest are bad guys. They even go into a home with a gun to Who the hell knows to what might be the boys dead family... Why every grieving family needs a home invasion??

Leaving the Patriotic Propeganda aside, the movie also fails to follow it's convictions. It's a bomb movie, you do stupid stuff you die. Oh we go stupidly running after insurgents by ourselves, oops our extra gets shot in the leg... Wow thank god it's 2008 or it would be the black actor who gets killed *sic*.

Only the Silly Councillor who talks to the local people gets blown up... By a random IED... We dinnit see that coming did we!

The hurt locker could have driven the tension. It could have stick to being "bomb squad" and actually shown that role in it's full glory. Instead the cowboy is too cowboyish, the cautious one is very well acted as is the third person... Local Iraqi's are evil and guns fix everything.

Heck even the ending has to SPELL it out to the audience. Hey you must be a little SLOW right? So lets make it clear as day.

Overall it is a Good film. A very good film, but it's such a lament that it isn't a great film. It could be just that, instead of being the Bomb movie it should have been it decides to play soldier and is so much weaker for it. 7.5/10 is just right.

The Game (1997)

A really enjoyable movie with nice plot twists
11 February 2023
Having had this recommended to me, I gave it a punt.

It was superb.

The kind of movie when you have it figured out, it pulls a twist and a twist that MAKES SENSE! Not surprises out of nowhere but logical "ah's".

It is Michael Douglas at his best, and I totally forgot what a gem he is. Other acting is on key and not disappointing.

The movie hits the 90's mark. Brick cell phones, square cars, overly dark scenery. Ofcourse none of that matters, you watch a thriller for the plot and this thriller has a great plot.

You should watch it for it's intelligence. It is incredibly well done and a true gem.

Battlestar Galactica (2004–2009)

A real show
7 January 2023
The original BSG had humanity run from the scary Cylons who killed most of humanity. Then it treated the audience to Muppets and stupidity. Similarities end here.

What makes fantasy good is when it is believable and real.

What BSG (2004) does is take that original terrifying concept and play it out with the justice to the realism it deserves. It is now real, real and pithy. Humanity has been destroyed by a force of vengeful robots and all that is left is a handful of ships floating in space.

A completely outstanding series thoughout. Maybe the ending will work for you, maybe it wont. Do not worry, you will be at wits end till the end and loving it.

Think of the best episode of Dr who or Star trek you have watched and multiply them together. That is BSG.

The star wars Episode 8 of the Orville
27 December 2022
We see two reviews here: 1. People saying this episode is brilliant.

2. People hating on a theme re-played with the Moclan's.

The fact that this episode may annoy certain politicians belonging to a party starting with R is not the point.

What has made the Orville great was the reality check to space travel. The trolley problems it confronts, the adult nature of the away trips and dangers confronted, the humanity.

I found this episode the weakest so far of all the Orville. Why, because the character decisions are DUMB. This is the "why are we going down in the dark basement without a flashlight" episode. Or to use a startrek metaphor why are we approaching that ship with our shields down against protocol?

The cast and crew who usually act quite intelligent and like smart people in space, instead act without basic intelligence. It's stupid on stupid from the plot and that really wrecked it for me.

Which is a shame, the acting in some parts is fantastic. Amazing performances, particularly at the end.

Expect the usual grit or sting from the Moctan episodes to be missing. This is the trolley problem where everyone gets off at the bus stop before they collide.

Stargate: Atlantis (2004–2009)

Great potential. Awful in later seasons
11 December 2022
This series has peaks as high as BSG but falls like the adventures of Hercules.

Season 1 is a fairly clear 8 stars and likewise season 2 when they flush out the wraith more. The wraith are a great bad guy but gradually become stupid after surviving so many battles.

It gradually becomes comical, with the "DR" from Voyager being sent to apply financial constraints on Atlantis. YES that bad, let's send in Jikstyr for comic relief.

Acting varies with some great performances and others so Wooden it makes Sci-fi look like Shakespeare.

By the time Amanda Tapping arrives it's time to Tune out.

Plot armor is layered heavy and thick. While SG1 seem to survive every mission, it was still done with greater realism. SGU was the franchise they should have continued. Atlantis is for the kids.

One of the best Bond films ever
11 June 2022
This is the 90's Bond. It's Bond back with a vengeance.

The best bit's is it truly gets Bond. It gets the extremism, the massive satellite's the villainous plots. Yet it also reinvents it for a modern (90's) time.

Brosnan nails Bond, yet lets the movie not be about him. He lets a wonderful and over the top storyline play out and keeps us on the edge of our seats. It is wonderful and it lead Bond back into the 90's. Craig really reinvented Bond, but Brosnan truly owned the character as he was, earning a top 3 Bond spot (who is going to outdo Roger and Sean? No one).

A wonderful film and awesomely great Bond movie.

A near miss, great concept, great acting lots of holes
21 May 2022
I can't believe how close this film is to being a very good movie. Honestly there is so much going for it: Concept- Awesome Acting - pretty damn good.

It has some nice twists and

Some bizarre actions combined with inexplicable plot holes. You have parts where you are just like "why the hell did this happen!" Yet the originality of the concept is just awesome.

I just wish they added a little more Polish to the plot. They could have ironed out one or two loose threads and the movie would have flowed so much better.

After watching it, it's worth a lazy watch. Does it make you think, Yes.

But could have been so much greater. Looking forward to these actors doing other films.

District 9 (2009)

A unique Sci-fi Movie
1 April 2022
District 9 is clearly a different setup. Johannesberg is an interesting location and this attracts you as it is different. I did not realise how different it was as a setting till I watched this.

The concept is different, but where District 9 succeeds is playing with it. Working it and taking it to that next level. It's a very adult sci-fi and you won't see that for the first 30 minutes.

Its unique and very unpredictable. Well worth the watch.

Don't Look Up (2021)

Works better as a mocumentry then a comedy
25 February 2022
Good films deal with uncomfortable truths.

Monsters ball deals with race relations and the lies within a relationship.

Titanic dealt with people drowning on a ship.

Don't look up deals with societies focus on triviality and superficiality over substance.

It is in this that it does well, rather then it's comedic side. As a comedy it does make you laugh and does have some good funny moments but the comedy does not carry this movie.

The drama and the story does carry this movie. It is the characters that make it.

The acting is brilliant. Leo is brilliant. Streap is very good but not great. My biggest criticism is that the tone isn't always consistent, naturally you have serious scientists and leaders focused on the non-serious. But that disturbed the viewing experience for me.

Far too Indulgent, with nothing behind it
11 January 2022
The best sci-fi makes you think. Nemesis leads you down a path that yes you will be thinking of alternate paths in life....

Then pretty much nothing.

It's the movie that Fanflick writers wanted. LOTS OF DATA, lots of Piccard. Clearly the writers of this movie really loved these characters too much. Everyone else takes a back seat. They bring Worf back from DS9 on the flimsiest excuse too do... NOTHING.

They build up a massive threat, people scarier then the Borg to do... not much.

It's corny, it's indulgent. It lacks an ending and a real plot to drive the movie forward. Never committing it has two feet in each way, lacking the realism of First Contact that made that movie great. No humour no nuance.

Turn your brain off and play this at double speed if you have too. Very missable.

Enjoyable, little twisty and lots of fun
21 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
A great Black mirror episode makes you think.

This one makes you think a little bit.

You have a great setting, a great mercy from the producers for giving us a NIN hook instead of a pop song. A creative scenario and some nice tension and suspense.

This isn't a "wake up in sweat" black mirror. This is an Indianna Jones go for a little adventure with Black Mirror.

It succeeds, acting is good and it's a little unexpected.

Most importantly, a good black mirror GOES THERE. It goes too those places that your like "woh". It does that.

8/10 well worth the watch.

Depth in the twist
11 July 2021
Good Sci-fi should "make us think"

With so many VR episodes it is good to see something different and intelligent come out of this one. The questions asked here, just are not asked in modern society.

Yet it is what we face. It's where we are headed and it's one of the most relevant Black Mirror episodes since 'the waldo moment' Or "the entire history of you'.

Marriage changes relationship dynamics. If you are Single you may not get this episode. When I was single I never enjoyed "the hardest button to button", I get it now. Still, watch it. The questions it asks are good.

Even so, Technically were there, ok perhaps a 16 bit equivalent to what they portray but we are there.

Episode, acting, casting, etc all very well done.

I suspect the current rating of this episode is just how bitey it is. More reflective of how people cannot deal with the content. This is one of the better Black Mirror Episodes only slightly imperfect, 9/10.

Having left Black mirror to watch other sci-fi. I realized why it was so so good.

This isn't a star trek rip-off which is what I was expecting.

Yes, a little dejavu in theme. That does not matter as much. What matters is that it follows it's premise to it's conclusion.

Black Mirror: The Waldo Moment (2013)

The simplest black mirror that has become the most accurate.
9 December 2019
Black Mirror has some fantastic episodes, "The Waldo Moment" will never be thought of as one of the greatest. There are no killer beez, virtual worlds, tortured memories or anything specifically exotic.

Yet the best SciFi is the SciFi that holds a mirror to our lives. The Waldo moment does exactly that. As we see in our society elections moving to entertainment, we see Waldo mimic our media's critique in an entertaining fashion of our elected officials.

There are no blaster rifles in this episode. Just as the good Zombie movies are meant to make us scared of our more sloth like nature as opposed to drueling monsters, Waldo is good Sci-Fi

Sicario (2015)
6/10
After much hype, left bitterly disappointed
21 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Sicario was billed to me as a great movie to watch. I was expecting something along the lines of Crash, silence of the lambs mexican style or essentially a confronting movie with blood, gore, police fights and telling chases.

Instead were left with a slow plot instead.

The start of the movie delivered exactly what I expected. A confronting Gang hiding people in walls and life being cheap. Perfect, we see clearly why Emily would go on a mission south. Now we find Emily and a Mexican police escort posse 15 cars long go into the dangerous zone with corpses hanging by the side of the road warding them off. Good start.

Then the traffic jam! wow this convoy is stuck in traffic and they see 2 gang cars in the distance also stuck in traffic. How convenient, so they wonder over, gang cars pull guns on them, get shot and they get a crumb of information.... right I bought that plot leap!

Now we have this 'shock' that US agencies go across the border to arrest and torture bad guys who appear to be quite bad. No redeeming features of them, just gang thugs being pushed to confess. Emily and her partner push to their boss wanting more details and answers...flagging their procedural concerns there. It's illuminating but sicario fails to ramp up the tension. It's officers asking their boss "are we ok to do this"..."yes". It doesn't bring out the objections clear enough. The biggest problem being the FBI involved are 'in the dark', not the torture nor their reaction to the torture.

So Emily gets drunk, her partner introduces her to a "good man" they get it on. When she realises he was carrying a bank note wrap identical to the wrap used in this mornings bust at the bank. After playing an almost helpless white female, a man comes to her rescue and gets this corrupt cop off her.

Again how convenient. Lets just have a QF make another plot leap. Now they interrogate the corrupt cop and find out the location of the other corrupt cops. The only redeeming factor here is the corrupt cop being told that it's his family in protective custody or their addresses posted on Reddit.

Then there is the tunnel scene which is meant to impress us with IR technology. Emily confronts Del Toro after he finds another corrupt cop "silvio" loading money in the trunk. Emily goes to stop him and Del Toro shoots her in her armor. Del toro then proceeds to use the corrupt cop to get into the gang mansion and kill everyone there. Including the gang leaders family as they sit to eat a meal. It is 100% unclear if Emily knows any of this or if Del Toro is just immune to bullets.

Also this is the death of Silvio, the father of the mexican kid playing soccer. the Kid being bossed around to get his bratty father stuff while he lives the life of the family father god. I had no idea why this was added. You make a heartfelt father and kill him I would understand as this provides connection to the brown people being blown apart, tortured and killed during the movie. You make a flawed and real father then you get a real connection. Instead you have made a demanding father that does nothing with his kid who the kid feels ambivalent about his passing in circumstances unknown. what was the point!

The real crunch, Del toro this assassin is the one who confronts Emily to fill in the paperwork greenlighting the whole operation and to say it followed procedure. Right, your assassin paid to take out another drug cartel is the one ensuring the paperwork is signed! After wanting to see this for a few years and hearing a lot of hype, this is a fizza.

Warning: Spoilers
This is the needed background episode on Claire.

It has some unusual twists in it and a few of the sci-fi posing questions that will trouble your mind.

Sadly I am over Quayle's games and over this series after the very poor and rushed last episode. Not seeing a recovery.

The Alternative film industries take on superheroes
17 January 2019
When we see superheroes today, we see these powerful, immortal, can't do no wrong type figures. Griff the invisible twists this, in the same way Unbroken twists this Genre but without the boring monologues, with a stack of Humour and far more character depth. The characters you will fall in love with. Be it Melody who does not want to be in a typical society, Griff the true hero of the film or various brothers/bosses/onlookers. Not only does Griff the invisible make you think about introspection and how you fit into a world as an individual. It does this by making you ROFL your heart out. A movie you will fall in love with, a true 10 star film.

Comedy Showroom: Bleak (2016 TV Movie)

Bleak was something very VERY different.
7 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This is no Tool Time or Everyone loves Raymond family friendly comedy. Nor is this a Married with Children, Absurd reality disfunctional comedy. What Bleak does well is show a 30 something with no prospects and very quickly no job. It highlights the tension between a self interested family, who are a little divided in wanting to care for their grown daughter but would prefer to be drinking another bottle of Champagne. With their own daughter who is oblivious to others and would rather live in her utopia.

Not a normal comedy and absolutely gorgeous.

The alternate film industry's take on super heroes
18 November 2016
There are good films, great films and then there are some films that are truly mindbogglingly good that they stand out among the crowd.

Griff the invisible is one of those Mindbogglingly good... Oops lower your expectations for a second.

I love superheroes, Iron man rocked. I loved what I have seen of the Avengers but hate and loathe what DC are doing to their icons. This movie does to marvel superhero movies what marvel did to the genre in the first place.... It made them real.

What Griff has done is taken superheroes and tilted them 90 degrees again. We explore how we see the world differently and how these different people fit in or don't in this world... This movie makes you think differently at the end of it.

BTW don't read anything about this movie. It's plot line in ingenious, and best unspoiled. It's not a drama, not a comedy, not an action movie. But a great, awesome story that once watched you will just love and quote for weeks.
