Prior to 1989, actor Leslie Nielsen was still best known for playing heavies and villains. Even when he appeared in comedy classics like "Airplane!" in 1980 or "Police Squad!" in 1982, his comedic power was derived from his ability to stay stonefaced while absurdity explodes around him. 1989, however, saw the release of "The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!" a film adaptation of the TV show. In that film, Nielsen played the role of Lt. Frank Drebin broadly, doing a lot of mugging and pratfalls. "The Naked Gun" was an enormous hit the year it was released, and Nielsen went full-bore into slapstick roles and spoof movies after that.
During the 1990s, Nielsen appeared in a litany of gloriously silly flicks like "Spy Hard," "Wrongfully Accused," "Repossessed" (a classic), "Dracula: Dead and Loving It," two of the "Scary Movie" sequels, and many others. Not all of these films were good, but...

For years, wise and successful women have been urging their sisters not to be afraid of their own ambition—to be strong, to take control, to “lean in,” as Facebook exec Sheryl Sandberg famously put it in her eponymous 2013 best-seller. (As perhaps the wisest woman of all once said: “I’m not bossy—I’m the boss.”)
Yet in practice, it’s not always easy to follow the advice of these strong, confident, famous women—especially if you’re, say, an anxious millennial who’s been socialized to care far too much about what other people think of you. Perhaps nobody knows that better than the multi-talented Rachel Bloom, who’s spent two seasons expertly skewering gender and social norms on the CW network’s Crazy Ex Girlfriend. Fast National ratings for Thursday, December 25, 2014. The animated "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" and the Jim Carrey live-action "Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas" ruled Christmas Thursday primetime, even if a "Big Bang Theory" repeat was still the night's most-watched show. There weren't many other Christmas ratings notables, though ABC is saying that its NBA double-header was up double-digits from last year. On to the primetime notables... Among adults 18-49, ABC averaged a 1.8 rating for Thursday night, comfortably tops in the key demographic. CBS was a distant second with a 0.8 key demo rating, followed by Fox's 0.5 key demo rating. NBC's 0.3 rating and The CW's 0.2 rating trailed in the key demo for the night. Overall, CBS averaged a 3.0 rating/6 share to ABC's 2.5/5, but ABC averaged 5.18 million viewers to the 4.86 million for CBS for Thursday primetime. There was a big drop to Fox's 2.36 million viewers and 1.5/3 and to NBC's 1.0/2 and 1.48 million viewers.

Mark Hamill was a little worried about sighing on to Elf: Buddy's Musical Christmas. "I was nervous involving myself in this," the Star Wars legend tells me. "How can they ever top the movie? But with the animation and the songs from the Broadway show, it's like it's own animal now." This new animated adaptation (premiering tonight at 8 p.m. on NBC) stars Jim Parsons as Buddy, the role originally played by Will Ferrell in the 2003 movie. Ed Asner returns as Santa with The Big Bang Theory actress Kate Micucci as Jovie. Rounding out the voice cast are Jay Leno, Matt Lauer, Gilbert Gottfried, Fred Armisen and Steve Higgins. Hamill plays Walter Hobbs. "The most...

At a loss for what to watch this week? From new DVDs and Blu-rays, to what's streaming on Netflix, we've got you covered.
New on DVD and Blu-ray
"The Skeleton Twins"
Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig are fantastic as estranged twins with a family history of depression. After a failed suicide attempt, Milo (Hader) goes to live with Maggie (Wiig) and her Golden Retriever-like husband, Lance (Luke Wilson). Although Maggie's life looks perfect from the outside, she's got just as many self-destructive secrets at Milo. Sweet and sad, this is definitely Wiig's best dramatic role to date.
"This Is Where I Leave You"
Tina Fey and Jason Bateman lead an impressive ensemble cast in this dramedy about a family forced together for their father's funeral, and the seven days of mourning customary known as sitting shiva in the Jewish tradition. Jane Fonda, Adam Driver, Rose Byrne, Kathryn Hahn, Ben Schwartz,...

Out doing press for the NBC holiday special "Elf: Buddy's Musical Christmas," it's understandable that those interviewing Mark Hamill about the show are much more keen to ask him about "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," his return to the franchise that made him famous.
Speaking with Yahoo! Movies, Hamill was asked about the film's trailer and the distinct lack of showing any of the original cast in it. He says it's understandable:
"This is about the new generation of characters; I think that's the most important thing. It's the opening act of a whole new approach to the storytelling. I rightly assumed that it wouldn't be our story because we had a beginning, a middle, and an end. This must be our offspring and the current generation, with us there lending the kind of support that Peter Cushing and Alec Guinness did in the original."
He then talked about his look for the film,...

Once upon a time, it was Will Ferrell trying to save his long-lost father from Santa's "naughty list," but in the new stop-motion animated adaptation Elf: Buddy's Musical Christmas it's Jim Parsons as the overgrown North Pole helper and Mark Hamill as his surly pop. In this scene from the holiday special, the Big Bang Theory actor voices the overgrown elf follows his disbelieving father through the park in a bid to win him back over to the good side of Santa's list.

The recently debuted first trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens was emotional for Mark Hamill. Yes, he "loved" what he saw, but… "Best of all, even more than the trailer, I liked watching videos of people watching the trailer," Hamill told me earlier today while promoting his latest project, Elf: Buddy's Musical Christmas, the new animated adaptation of the Elf movie and Broadway musicial (premiering on Dec. 16 at 8 p.m. on NBC). "You know you sort of get isolated and you forget that to a certain segment of the population that this is very special to them and they love it at a level that most people don't understand. That was moving to me. I got choked up seeing how happy it made...
