Ok, so there is no scientific research to back up the claim that looking at lemurs can increase your happiness. But if you're feeling a little down, or just craving a super-dose of cute, Island of Lemurs: Madagascar will definitely do the trick. The film, in IMAX 3D theaters Aug. 22 with tickets on sale now, takes an educational and entertaining look at lemurs, those fascinating and utterly endearing primates found only in Madagascar. Morgan Freeman, dulcet-toned as usual, narrates this documentary, describing the plight of the more than 50 species of lemurs that are being threatened by habitat destruction and the efforts being made to save them. The film also captures the daily life of lemur families, and it's packed with interesting bits of information. For example, did...

Time to take a look at IMAX's shiny new toy. Today, IMAX has announced and unveiled first official photos and a video featurette for their new IMAX 3D Digital Camera, a new camera system designed to capture 3D footage at IMAX-resolution. The camera was already used on Michael Bay's TF4, or Transformers: Age of Extinction, and gets some extra time in the featurette focused on that; it was also used on the Island of Lemurs: Madagascar and Hubble 3D docs. It's kind of small, looks versatile, and shoots at 4K in 3D. "IMAX’s fully integrated dual 65mm 4K digital large-format 3D camera delivers stunning image quality and is smaller, lighter and easier to use than other 3D digital camera systems on the market." Check this out. It may be a bit painful to hear "digital" being included in the name of this camera, but that's the age we're in.

Morgan Freeman narrates the incredible true story of nature’s greatest explorers—lemurs. While shooting on location in Madagascar, the film introduces us to Dr. Patricia Wright, a primatologist devoted to the study and preservation of lemurs. I recently sat down with Dr. Wright to talk about her experiences with these wonderful creatures, the relationships that she has built, and her thoughts on modern zoos. Check it out below.
Captured with IMAX® 3D cameras, the film takes audiences on a spectacular journey to the remote and wondrous world of Madagascar. Lemurs arrived in Madagascar as castaways millions of years ago and evolved into hundreds of diverse species but are now highly endangered. Join trailblazing scientist Dr. Patricia Wright on her lifelong mission to help these strange and adorable creatures survive in the modern world.

There have been many wildlife documentaries released into theatres over the last couple of years, but Island of Lemurs: Madagascar is certainly a highlight among its peers. It follows Dr. Patricia Wright, an accomplished American primatologist, anthropologist and conservationist who has been instrumental in helping to save lemurs from extinction.
The movie documents how the lemurs first arrived in Madagascar millions of years ago as castaways and how nowadays, they are an endangered special. For those who aren’t familiar with the animal, it’s a real eye-opener and will no doubt leaving you wanting to learn more. Island of Lemurs: Madagascar is also beautifully shot, showing off both the lemurs and their environments in stunning IMAX 3D.

Jonathan Glazer's well-reviewed Scarlett Johansson-starrer "Under the Skin" (A24) scored the best limited opening so far this year after the phenomenal "The Grand Budapest Hotel." Clocking less than 20% the latter film's start, "Under the Skin" still marked an impressive opening for a challenging and highly-stylized thriller. Meantime, Fox Searchlight's "Dom Hemingway" starring Jude Law got off to a weak ($8,000 per screen average) start in a similar four-theater opening. "Under the Skin"'s initial appeal is encouraging. It was going up against a competitive Video on Demand total including a first-ever parallel release from CBS Films, as well as new films from arthouse vets Errol Morris and Lars von Trier, as well as a new Steve Coogan comedy. The weekend release slate also included a broad array of multi-city fringe releases including the four-year old "Frankie and Alice," "Island of Lemurs: Madagascar," a new IMAX short from Warner Bros.,...

Chicago – It’s challenging to enjoy this film purely for what it is rather than fault it for what it could have been. “Island of Lemurs: Madagascar,” which opened exclusively in IMAX 3D and 2D on April 4, 2014 and is narrated by Morgan Freeman, is only 39 minutes. The film too simply grazes the surface of a complicated problem.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
It feels like an elementary-school field trip rather than a film ready for nationwide IMAX distribution. It’s tough to tell if that’s because it was so expensive to film with IMAX cameras or because that’s as much of a story as is warranted by this adorable arboreal primate who is getting marketed as “nature’s greatest explorer”.
Read Adam Fendelman’s full review of “Island of Lemurs: Madagascar”.
Either way, it’s an incomplete project that only starts to touch the surface of elements it needed to be a full body of work.

It's a rare experience to interview legend Morgan Freeman on the red carpet. It's an even rarer experience to interview a lemur on the red carpet. (See me do both by scrollilng down to see the video!)
At the Island of Lemurs: Madagascar world premiere in front of the California Science Center IMAX Theater, a red carpet is rolled out in front of posters of the movie and plant decorations. After an hour of waiting, the very first guest on the carpet arrives: a common brown lemur perched on the shoulders of a lemur caretaker. This playful little lemur jumps from shoulder to shoulder, surprising guest celebrities walking down the carpet. Oohs and aahs come from the crowd of passersby visiting the museum.
Dr. Patricia Wright, a primatologist who is featured in the movie, explains the lemurs' countenance as a reflection on their lifestyle. "They have that calm sort of Zen approach to life.

The nature documentary, invented by Walt Disney himself and maintained, in the years since, by various filmmakers, philanthropists, and causes, has seen something of a resurgence in recent years, mostly thanks to the annual DisneyNature documentary that focuses on some exotic (but still cuddly) aspect of the animal kingdom. This year's entry, in theaters later this month, is "Bears." But that doesn't mean that Disney, founder of the genre and pioneer since, has cornered the market on the nature documentary. In the fallow years between its invention and the recent initiative, the best nature documentaries were typically seen in large-format IMAX theaters. Together with Warner Bros., IMAX released documentarian's David Douglas' genuinely gripping monkey tale "Born to Be Wild" in 2011, and that same team has reassembled for this week's enthralling "Island of Lemurs: Madagascar."Narrated, like breakout nature documentary "March of the Penguins," by Morgan Freeman, "Island of Lemurs:.

Explorers and adventurers alike will be delighted to know that director David Douglas’ Island of Lemurs: Madagascar is as fun and informative a short film as any in recent memory. Captured using IMAX 3D cameras, the documentary presents the country of its title in all its glorious landscapes and colors. Of course, the film wouldn’t be much of anything without its titular creature: the lemur. As picturesque as the rainforest is when rendered in breathtaking 3D, it is the lemurs that bring Madagascar bursting out of the screen with stunning urgency.
The main action here surrounds Dr. Patricia Wright’s efforts to preserve the golden bamboo lemurs. This particular breed was thought to be extinct until she happened upon a few stragglers in what remains of Madagascar’s rainforest. At the onset of the film, only two golden bamboo lemurs dwell on preserved land. Dr. Wright’s team of...

Back in 2005, the animated film Madagascar introduced us to a wildly eccentric lemur named King Julien who captured the hearts and imaginations of moviegoers across the globe. Besides King Julien though, people don’t know much about these singing and dancing primates or the exotic habitat they live in. That’s all about to change when Island Of Lemurs: Madagascar hits theaters in IMAX on April 4th and the star, director and narrator Morgan Freeman, whose becoming a staple of nature films, explain their fascination with the cute animals (how can you resist that face above).

This weekend, the first superheroes of the summer storm the big screen in Marvel's "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," Jude Law stars as a newly released and completely reckless British gangster in "Dom Hemingway," and several critically-acclaimed independent films hit theaters.
"Captain America: The Winter Soldier" stars Chris Evans as the patriotic superhero adjusting to his role in modern-day Washington D.C. when he becomes embroiled in a world-threatening conspiracy. Fighting off assassins sent to quiet him, Captain America joins forces with Black Widow to battle Soviet agent the Winter Soldier. The sequel to 2011's "Captain America" features a stellar cast: Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, and Robert Redford.
