Take in the dramatic conflicts and rolling pastures of Yellowstone, and you’ll understand why its visionary creator, Taylor Sheridan, is so intolerant of any criticism that he vehemently maintains is unfounded. How often do we stumble upon a show that ricochets between the resonant truths of culture and the rugged beauty of storytelling, only to find its essence misconstrued?
Sheridan, the maestro behind the curtain, was quick to demolish the notion that his beloved series is merely a “conservative” or “Republican show”—a label he challenged in an eye-opening conversation with The Atlantic in 2022.
Taylor Sheridan in Sons of Anarchy
The narrative landscape of Yellowstone is so firmly anchored in tackling themes like Native American historical displacement that one must ask: Can the interpretation of such a complex production truly be painted with a single color of the political spectrum?
And the Sons of Anarchy actor is here to provide a thorough explanation!

The beloved Tom Hanks flick, Forrest Gump, which narrates the tale of a sweet but simple-minded common man who unintentionally finds himself at the center of significant moments in American history, is commemorating its 30th anniversary this summer.
Robert Zemeckis’ directorial was one of the biggest hits of the 1990s, no doubt. It took home six Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Director. It makes sense that audiences find comfort in the story of the slow-witted man who never loses sight of his true love, Jenny (Robin Wright). Truly, what a work!… Well, not really.
Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump
Yes, beneath the catchy quotes and Hanks’ remarkable emulation of the character, Forrest Gump is actually a surprisingly heartless film that presents an optimistic exterior.

Actor-turned-screenwriter Taylor Sheridan gained recognition for creating and directing the neo-Western show Yellowstone. The Paramount show has been a runaway hit ever since it began in 2018. It stars Kevin Costner as John Dutton III, the patriarch of the Yellowstone Ranch, who has to deal with family drama and politics as he fights to keep his ranch.
The show gained acclaim for its depiction of traditional American life and its writing, the bulk of which was reportedly done by Taylor Sheridan. Sheridan has explored the genre and setting of the show in his other works such as Wind River and Hell or High Water. The director was reportedly inspired by his time on a Native American Reservation, where he encountered a racist incident.

Battered by disappointing markets at Toronto and AFM, both of which were held under the shadow of the actors strike, buyers and sellers are looking to Berlin’s European Film Market (EFM), which runs Feb. 15-21, to re-energize the indie business. The outlook, coming out of Sundance, is good.
“The difference in Sundance from last year to this was extreme, there were a lot more deals being down, both by distributors and streamers,” says Janina Vislmaier, head of sales at Protagonist Pictures, which screened The Outrun with Saoirse Ronan and Sasquatch Sunset with Riley Keough and Jesse Eisenberg in Park City, both of which will screen at the EFM. “Everyone is really excited ahead of Berlin, especially because all the buyers are back, including from Asia, which is a really good sign.”

I don’t know of many Christmas horror adaptations. Sure, I could probably look at the history of Krampus and piece something together but other than that I’m hard pressed so let me know in the comments what I could cover next holiday season. Winter in general has all sorts of movies and stories that they are based off of. The very first episode of this show was all about The Thing and its source material Who Goes There and now in the middle of winter, at least in Colorado, I think it’s time to look at one of the better vampire properties of the 2000s and a great limited series comic. 30 Days of Night was originally pitched as a movie but when it was turned down, the comic came out and put the author’s name on the map. As is the nature of Hollywood, it...

Action director legend John Woo is returning to cinemas with his new film Silent Night, and has something to say about the popularity and dominance of superhero films.
Asked about superhero movies in an interview with The New Yorker, Woo replied, “I’ve never liked watching movies with big special effects, or anything based on comic books. I prefer Martin Scorsese’s movies, that kind of cinema. I can’t wait to watch Killers of the Flower Moon. I like old-fashioned movies, you know? Real cinema. There aren’t many movies like that lately.”
Asked to name a recent action movie he liked, Woo picked writer Taylor Sheridan’s 2016 neo-Western Hell or High Water, which was directed by David Mackenzie.
Scorsese, of course, helped kick off the whole “real movies vs. superhero movies” debate back in 2019, when he told Empire, “I don’t see them. I tried, you know? But that’s not cinema.

John Woo is perhaps the greatest action director of all time. No one can shoot action as kinetically as him, and his style paved the way for everyone from Sam Raimi to The Wachowskis to Chad Stahelski, whose John Wick movies are a love letter to the movies Woo made with Chow Yun-Fat. With his comeback movie Silent Night getting good buzz and hitting theatres on December 1st, John Woo recently sat down with The New Yorker for an extensive, wide-ranging interview about his life and career.
Of course, the magazine couldn’t help but ask Woo for his thoughts on superhero movies, with the legendary director coming down firmly on team Scorsese, who’s been outspoken about his dislike of the genre. “I’ve never liked watching movies with big special effects or anything based on comic books. One thing is clear after watching “Mob Land”: Kevin Dillon will not be the man to end America’s opioid crisis. In fact, it’s possible that the prescription drug epidemic currently gutting this country will not end at the hands of any single “Entourage” cast member.

But despite his life of petty crime and general inability to get his act together, Trey has a few thoughts about the opioids that have begun circulating through his town at an alarming rate.
He sees his friends and neighbors struggling to make ends meet while the local strip mall pill mill rakes in six figures by feeding their addictions. Through some combination of altruism and greed, he convinces himself that...

On paper, Rod Blackhurst’s Blood for Dust is just a standard film within the Neo-Western genre: a man (Scoot McNairy) down on his luck trying to earn money for himself and/or his family who eventually partners with a shady criminal (Kit Harrington) to earn one big score that will set both of them for life, but as they dig further and further into the criminal underworld, they’ll learn that their score comes at the risk of losing not just their lives, but their loved ones as well.
Every cliche and trope that you can imagine a Neo-Western story could have is littered throughout Blood for Dust. However, while its predictability makes for a film that has very few, if any, surprises or moments of subversion, it more than makes up for it by creating the most entertaining and engaging film that it can be, and for the most part,...

The High Water chapter closes on Step Up: High Water Season 3 Episode 10. Angel makes a choice, Rigo, and Marquise solve their issues, and Collette gets a better ending than one would have thought for her.
More than one person realizes their dreams. For Sage, High Water is a success; now, he can rest easy. For Tal, Davis, and Poppy, the school saved them from their highly uncertain futures. Even Odalie and Rigo benefited from the experience.
Sage dipped his toes into the world of politics. This was a decision I wasn't too thrilled about because nine times out of ten, it ends badly for celebrities when they mix politics and entertainment.
It often can't be avoided, especially when politics infringe on artistic liberty, but it's advisable to hold it until the fight comes to you.

Starz has canceled the “Step Up’ series after just one season on the network, Variety has confirmed.
Produced by Lionsgate TV, the first two seasons of the show were released on YouTube. Starz revived the show in 2020 after it was left in limbo when YouTube took a step back from producing original scripted content. At the time, news of the move seemed a sensible transition considering that Lionsgate is Starz’ parent company.
According to the series description, the musical drama followed the students and faculty of High Water, “an incubator for new artistic talent where founder Sage Odom (Ne-yo) and his partner Collette Jones (Christina Milian) struggle to maintain their empire.”
In Season 3, viewers witnessed Sage, Colette and their relationship challenged as they faced criminal charges, financial ruin, and powerful political enemies who wanted to destroy Sage and High Water. The Season 3 finale, which will now serve as the series finale,...

Step Up will not be returning for a fourth season on Starz.
Per Deadline, the series has been canceled after three seasons.
The news comes just ahead of its season finale, which is set to premiere next week.
Given how late in the game the cancellation came, there's a good chance there will be plenty of loose ends.
The series first started its life on YouTube, airing as a YouTube premium original for two seasons.
Inspired by the Step Up Lionsgate film franchise that grossed over 600 million at the worldwide box office, the series centers on Sage Odom (Ne-Yo) as the legendary founder of Atlanta’s famed High Water Performing Art School.
"Welcome to High Water – a next level incubator for new artistic talent, where danger, corruption, suspicions, desires, resentments, and ambitions collide in and out of the halls," the logline for Season 3 reads.

It took a while, some creative changes, and a home change, but we're back!
Step Up: High Water Season 3 Episode 1 picks up a little after Sage Odom's bus is intercepted by the police, and he is taken into custody.
This effectively halts his anticipated tour, throwing everyone into chaos. Some changes happened when the series was on hiatus. There were some changes creatively and with the cast.
We will explore these changes, including new characters, the new Tal and Collette, the new opening theme, and the story.
The previous opening theme song was a bop. It sets the mood and the tone for the entire episode. The new theme is ... not bad. It takes a while to get into it, but when one hears it three-four times, it gets stuck in their head. I wish they recorded an extended version.
There were also some changes in the cast. British actor...

Winter is coming, but not at Netflix, as the streamer will be launching its reality show “Summer Job” – produced by Banijay Italia – before the end of the year.
“I am proud, because it’s an original show made for Italy,” said Tinny Andreatta, VP of content for Italy, at Mia Market on Wednesday.
Netflix has been eager to expand its unscripted content.
“We know our members love it. It’s a really exciting and growing area for us,” added Larry Tanz, VP of content for Emea. Mentioning some recent successes from “Young, Famous & African” to “I Am Georgina,” both coming back for a second season, as well as new Spanish offering “Who Likes My Follower?”
Docu-series are also having a moment, it was stated, with the launch of Mark Lewis’ “Vatican Girl: The Disappearance of Emanuela Orlandi” already generating controversy.
“It’s a very sensitive show,” noted Andreatta.

Netflix fans continue to flock to binge-watch “Dahmer,” the unsettling drama series starring Evan Peters as the infamous killer cannibal, in record numbers.
Ryan Murphy’s “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” topped Netflix’s English TV Top 10 list for the third week in a row, with 205.33 million hours viewed for the week of Oct. 3-9. That means the limited series is now Netflix’s second most popular English-language series of all time in its initial release, with 701.37 million hours watched, behind only “Stranger Things 4,” which was watched 1.35 billion hours in its first 28 days. “Dahmer” has now garnered more watch-time than seasons 1 and 2 of Shonda Rhimes’ “Bridgerton” in their first four weeks on the service.
The all-time Netflix TV leader in the first four weeks of release remains “Squid Game,” the South Korean surprise hit that notched 1.65 billion hours viewed in its first 28 days on the service.

Exclusive: Netflix’s Director of Local Language Originals for the Cee, Anna Nagler, has outlined the streamer’s ambitions in region, as its biggest drama series from the region, High Water, launches globally today.
In an exclusive interview, Nagler said the streamer’s “doors are open” to creatives and their ideas in Central and Eastern Europe, as Netflix pushes into original shows from international territories despite the company’s well-documented stock price drop this year.
This comes after Netflix opened its regional Cee office in Poland this year. Since launching in Poland in 2016, the SVoD player has claimed to have invested more than 490M Pln (115M) on original films and series such as erotic movie franchise 365 Days in the country, creating more than 2,600 jobs across the production sector in 2020 and 2021.
“Opening the Warsaw office was important but also we’re getting closer to the creative community in general,” Nagler told Deadline.

Congrats, everyone! We’ve finally made it to another spooky season. To celebrate, Netflix is highlighting its best horror content on its list of new releases for October 2022.
It wouldn’t be October on Netflix without a new Mike Flanagan title. Thankfully the Midnight Mass showrunner returns with The Midnight Club on Oct. 7. This series, adapted from a book of the same name, takes place in a hospice for terminally ill teens who have all made a gruesome pact. This series will be followed up by other creepy TV titles like Unsolved Mysteries Vol. 3 on Oct. 18, 28 Days Haunted on Oct. 21, and most importantly: Guillermo Del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities on Oct. 25, which will collect eight terrifying stories from the famed director himself.

London-based investment firm Centricus has acquired a majority stake in Sk Global Entertainment, the independent production and finance company known behind film Crazy Rich Asians.
Financial terms weren’t disclosed. A source said the total consideration was in the low-to-mid nine figures.
Charlie Corwin will become CEO and John Penotti chief creative officer focusing on the Sk Global’s film and TV slates. (They had been co-ceos). Sk Global founder Sidney Kimmel will remain chairman, Matt Aragachi will continue as CFO
Centricus will provide additional capital to accelerate Sk Global’s growth strategy through IP ownership and financing strategic acquisitions. Earlier this year, Sk Global acquired Critical Content, a producer of unscripted television series including MTV’s Catfish and Netflix’s Get Organized with The Home Edit.
“With the rapid expansion of platforms and theatrical releases around the world, this is a unique time of great opportunity for independence at scale.
