It looks like Peter Jackson is planning to shoot the two Hobbit films entirely in stereoscopic 3D using the new Red Epic camera. I was really hoping that The Hobbit would escape this pointless 3D filmmaking craze, but it looks like that's not going to happen. The Hobbit is coming to us in the third dimension.
Like I said earlier, Jackson will use the new Red Epic camera, which hasn't officially been released yet. Jackson has been a fan of the Red cameras for a long time already, and actually shot a short film for Red called Crossing The Line. For those of you not familiar with the Red cameras, the Red One cameras shoot digitally at 4K resolution, while the new Red Epics will capture 5K resolution at 120 frames+ / second. The Epic will have the highest dynamic range ever for a digital camera as well. "The Epic's small size and relatively low weight,...

People may have, over the last while, heard the Red Camera system bandied about. Briefly, without spilling my geek goo all over the place, the Red Camera system is a rather small, robust all singing and dancing digital camera system. For example, the Red One camera shoots digitally at 4K resolution (which is pretty high). The likes of District 9 and The Social Network were mainly shot using the Red One camera. Well, Peter Jackson is back using Red for The Hobbit. The director previously shot his short (!) (Crossing The Line) using the system and for The Hobbit it will be shot on Red Epics. Ok, here it comes….The Red Epic shoots at 5K resolution (your eyes will explode) and 120 frames a second…so…Splat…sorry. Jackson who has grabbed 30 to shoot with says “I have always liked the look of Red footage. I'm not a scientist or mathematician,...

Oh Peter Jackson, how you tease. The New Zealand director has promised that he will have certainty about whether The Hobbit is going ahead "sometime soon" in an interview with New Zealand's Dominion Post. Yes, he's still optimistic that the legal knots can be combed out, saying that Warners was "making progress untangling the MGM situation", which can only be a good thing. But that's not all he's planning: it sounds like his long hinted-at Anzac project may be the next project on his plate. A huge fan of Gallipoli, Peter Weir's 1980s take on the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps who fought in the Mediterranean in World War I, Jackson hopes to get his own take on the story of the disastrous Dardenelles campaign off the ground.Jackson already directed a World War I short film in 2007 called Crossing The Line, presumably just to get a feel...

The Short Works Of… [1] is a semi-regular feature on Film Junk where we spotlight commercials, music videos and other short form work from a well-known director. With the recent release of the first trailer for District 9 [2], arguments over the talent and skill of director Neill Blomkamp have resurfaced across the blogosphere. Blomkamp is perhaps best known for the movie he never directed: Halo. Peter Jackson chose him to direct a blockbuster movie based on the popular video game franchise despite the fact that he had never directed a feature film. However, it is his short form work that landed him the job, so I figured it would be a good time to look back at his impressive resume and show why this guy is the real deal. Citroen Commercial: "Alive with Technology" You can't start a discussion about Neill Blomkamp's work without talking about this amazing car commercial,...
