The former Jeopardy! producer who was famously fired after one day as the TV game show’s new host, as a repercussion of disparaging comments he’d made years earlier, is speaking out about his experience and revealing how some of the top potential guest hosts tested to replace Alex Trebek came from unexpected professional backgrounds and might have altered the show’s tone.
Mike Richards had a career as a game show producer, working in top roles at shows including The Price Is Right and Let’s Make a Deal, before being tapped for the highly sought-after hosting gig at quiz show Jeopardy! following the death of longtime, beloved host Alex Trebek in 2020 from pancreatic cancer. In a new interview with People reflecting on that time period, Richards shared some details of the many famous people who auditioned for or guest hosted the enduringly popular evening game show as producers...

Exclusive: Details have emerged about the circumstances surrounding DJ Nurre’s rather abrupt exit from Endemol Shine North America. As Deadline reported exclusively Monday, Nurre, one of the company’s top unscripted executives, has left after six years.
According to sources, Nurre was let go for violating company policy following an investigation into alleged misconduct. I hear an outside firm was hired to examine claims of alleged sexual harassment related to an incident during production and its aftermath.
“As per our policy, we do not share specifics about employees leaving the company,” a spokesperson for Endemol Shine North America said in a statement to Deadline, declining further comment.

Hulu is jumping into the competition-series game with a series that will put people in a house and pit them against one another for a big cash prize.
Big Brother? Nope. The Traitors? Also no. The Disney-run streamer has ordered Got to Get Out, a competition show/”social experiment” with echoes of the prisoner’s dilemma — the thought experiment where people can work together for mutual benefit or go solo for a potentially greater reward. Sky and Channel 4 in the U.K. are partnering to bring Sky Sports’ coverage of this season’s F1 final to the entirety of the territory on both networks simultaneously. It looks to be an historic night for F1 and the U.K.’s highest-profile racer Lewis Hamilton, who could clinch his eighth world title cementing his place at the top of the sport’s all-time winningest drivers. At present, the seven-time world chimp is tied on points with Belgian driver Max Verstappen, meaning that whoever finishes higher at Yas Marina will walk away with this year’s title. The historic race is being billed as Lewis v Max: Decider in the Desert.
“Sunday’s Grand Prix is one of the biggest sporting events in the last decade, and could be an historic moment for British sport,” said Sky executive VP and CEO for Europe and the U.

“Jeopardy!” has found its replacement for Alex Trebek, naming not one but two full-time hosts.
Mike Richards, who had been heavily rumored as the frontrunner since last week, will serve as the primary host for “Jeopardy!,” while Bialik will host the primetime and spin-off specials, including the just-announced “Jeopardy! National College Tournament” that will air on ABC in 2022.
Bialik’s role is part of “Jeopardy!” producer Sony Pictures Television’s plan to further expand the franchise. Both her and Richards had served as guest fill-ins this year as while the producers searched for a successor to Trebek, who died last November from cancer.
“We are thrilled to begin the next chapter of America’s Favorite Quiz Show with Mike hosting our daily show and Mayim hosting new versions of ‘Jeopardy!,’” said Ravi Ahuja, Chairman of Global Television Studios and Corporate Development for Sony Pictures. “We took this decision incredibly seriously.

While Sony Pictures Television isn’t saying anything publicly, it was reported this week that “Jeopardy!” executive producer Mike Richards is the apparent front-runner to become the long running quiz show’s new permanent host.
But Richards’ path to replacing the beloved Alex Trebek, who died in November 2020, may have hit a snag after his involvement in two harassment lawsuits related to his old job were resurfaced.
Richards joined Sony Pictures Television in 2019 and has executive produced “Jeopardy!” since 2020. But before that, he was for a decade an executive producer on CBS’s “The Price is Right.” In 2010, former “The Price Is Right” model Brandi Cochran sued show producers FremantleMedia and The Price Is Right Productions for harassment. She asserted that she was harassed following the 2008 on-air announcement of her pregnancy, and found out she was fired as her maternity leave came to an end.

After Variety reported “Jeopardy!” executive producer Mike Richards had begun advanced negotiations to become the full-time host of the trivia show, fans weren’t too happy, to say the least. Many people were lobbying for “Star Trek” star and recent guest host LeVar Burton to take the job and there was an outpouring of regret online about the news Wednesday evening.
Twitter was full of hot takes on NBC’s apparent decision to have Richards replace the late host Alex Trebek, a legend in his own right who hosted the show from its 1984 premiere until his death in November 2020.
It was reported Aug. 1 that Richards, a the lead executive on “Jeopardy!”, was “clearly the front-runner” in a mix of “several potential candidates” to host the show. Sony Pictures told Variety that it “not comment specifically on Richards’ status” and an anonymous insider told the magazine “there’s no certainty that...

It appears “Jeopardy!” may have found its permanent replacement for Alex Trebek, the game show’s longtime host who died last year. And it’s probably not the person most fans were expecting.
Sony Pictures Television, which produces the show, is in advanced talks to make the show’s executive producer Mike Richards the permanent host, Variety reported Wednesday. A spokesperson for Sony declined to comment on any potential talks with Richards.
An individual with knowledge of the discussions told TheWrap that talks with potential hosts are still ongoing, as is the decision-making process, though the individual stopped short of confirming that Richards was among those in consideration or how many potential long-term options are still in the mix. The individual added the eventual decision will incorporate focus groups, research and fan response.

Mike Richards Is an Underwhelming ‘Jeopardy!’ Choice — but the Search for the Next Host Was Great TV
The most-speculated-about podium in entertainment may have a new occupant.
The news that Mike Richards, the executive producer of “Jeopardy!,” is in advanced negotiations to take over as permanent host, filling the role once occupied by the late Alex Trebek, ends a guessing game that had run throughout 2021, as figures from throughout the world of TV took their turns reading answers and soliciting questions.
To a viewer who checked out every one of the guest hosts, this outcome feels both preordained and surprising. The presence of Richards, a show insider, among vastly more well-known hosts was somewhat eyebrow-raising from the first. Richards’ performance was technically assured: He’s been a host on lesser shows like “Beauty and the Geek” before, and it’s no surprise that he knows the show he produces. But other hosts did a more effective job at bringing out contestants’ personalities than did Richards, who could be somewhat abrupt.

The search for new permanent host of Jeopardy! has come to an end. The show’s executive producer Mike Richards is finalizing a deal to succeed the late Alex Trebek as emcee of the venerable syndicated game show, I hear. Noone would comment but I hear Richards, who emerged as a frontrunner early in the search, was quietly appointed as the host a couple of weeks ago with the deal now in final negotiations. Sony Pictures Television is expected to make an official announcement in the next few days.
Richards, who has hosting experience, was well received by fans when he served as a guest host earlier this year along with a slew of celebrities who filled in for the beloved Trebek. The show’s longtime host lost his battle with cancer in November.
“He was everything you could hope for and more,” Richards said of Trebek on the show.

Since long-time “Jeopardy!” host Alex Trebek passed away last November, many have wondered who would be taking the reins as permanent host. Several different guests have assumed hosting duties over the last several months, including controversial choices like Dr. Sanjay Gupta and Ken Jennings, whose past ableist tweets resurfaced when his temporary gig was announced.
In news exclusive to Variety, the show’s executive producer Mike Richards is considered the frontrunner to take over the job permanently. Richards joined the show last year as EP and, per the report, impressed producing studio, Sony Pictures, with his knowledge of the game and on-air manner.
Prior to working at “Jeopardy!” Richards hosted the game shows “Divided” and “The Pyramid” for Sony’s Gsn channel. He also previously hosted “High School Reunion” and “Beauty and the Geek” and sold the revival of “Let’s Make a Deal” to CBS. He’s produced over 4,000 hours...

“Jeopardy!” executive producer Mike Richards is in advanced negotiations with Sony Pictures Television to become permanent host of the venerable quiz show, taking the reins of the syndicated powerhouse that was fronted by Alex Trebek for 36 years.
After Trebek’s death at the age of 80 in November 2020, Sony initiated a series of guest hosts, some of whom were hoping to land the permanent slot. Richards, who joined the show just last year as executive producer, impressed Sony Pictures brass with his command of the fast-paced game and easy on-air manner.
A Sony Pictures spokesman said discussions were ongoing with several potential candidates. He would not comment specifically on Richards’ status. A source close to the situation cautioned that there’s no certainty that the sides will close a deal and that other candidates remain in the mix, although Richards is clearly the front-runner.

Jeopardy! executive producer Mike Richards, filling in on hosting duties, paid tribute to the late Alex Trebek last night, saying that “working with Alex was even better than you could have imagined.”
“He was everything you could hope for and more,” said Richards, currently on Day 3 of a two-week temporary hosting gig. “He was an idol of mine, and I will work every day to try to live up to the example he set.”
Watch the tribute below.
Though Richards is certainly the least recognizable of the guest hosts lined up – he follows Ken Jennings, and will be succeeded by CNN’s Anderson Cooper, Today’s Savannah Guthrie and Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers – early viewer response on Twitter has been overwhelmingly favorable.
“10 min in & I feel Mike Richards has not only hosted a game show as a previous career but was also a stand in for Jon Hamm...

When producers of reality TV are looking to reframe the narratives around their project from “trash” to “substance,” a common tactic is to refer to the show as a “social experiment.” Jeff Probst does it all the time on Survivor. Ashton Kutcher went so far as to deem a little show called Beauty and the Geek “the ultimate social experiment.”

When Joi McMillon attended the Toronto International Film Festival for the premiere of “Moonlight,” someone asked her if she was one of the film’s stars. On another occasion, she was mistaken for a costume designer. “People would say it was a compliment to me because I dressed nice,” she recalled in a recent phone interview, trailing off with a sardonic laugh that sounded like the best defense against the absurd set of assumptions that have troubled her career for years.
In fact, McMillon is one of two editors on “Moonlight,” and poised to make history as the first African-American woman ever nominated for a best editing Oscar. “Thinking about it stresses me out a bit,” McMillon said. “Whether you want it or not, the responsibility holds.”
Although “Moonlight” marks McMillon’s first feature-length editing credit, she’s hardly a newcomer to the field. She attended Florida State University with...

On the back of a confident CinemaCon appearance and the recent hire of David Kosse that has left nobody in any doubt about its global theatrical ambitions, Bob Simonds’ studio unveiled on Monday another component to its television platform.
Jason Goldberg (pictured), creator and executive producer of shows like Punk’d and Beauty And The Geek, has joined as president of non-scripted and alternative programming.
Under Goldberg’s stewardship Stx said it would become the first Us-based company involved in a broadcast TV show airing in China.
For now that show is called Thank You For Your Love and is being developed in conjunction with Xg Entertainment and scheduled to premiere this year to a potential audience of one billion viewers.
Stx Non-Scripted launches with sales or development deals in place for 12 shows to networks in the Us and Asia, including NBC, CW, Food Network, Syfy, Oxygen, the History Channel and Freeform.

Did you watch the American version of the social experiment show “Beauty and the Geek”? If you weren’t on board with the show, catch up on the series with ITVBe’s FilmOn page. “Beauty and the Geek,” now a franchise with shows airing all across the world, features women who fall in the “beauty” category and men who fall in the “geek” category. These two groups–who probably wouldn’t have anything to do with each other outside of this show–are put together into couples to compete for a large cash prize. Here’s more about the show: “What do you get if you put a Chess club captain in a castle with a [ Read More ]

Heroes. Close your eyes and picture one. I imagine you’re picturing someone brave with a great chin, someone who is ice-cool when under pressure, someone who saves the day and gets the girl. Now close your eyes and picture a giant nerd.
You may have an image in your mind of some Beauty And The Geek reject or that kid you were in school with that was voted most likely to die a virgin. What you definitely won’t be picturing are any of the screen heroes featured on this list.
That’s because, via the magic of cinema and choice casting decisions, these giant nerds are transformed from the socially awkward, introverted nerdilingers they should be into calm as a coma, Nazi-killing, ghost busting, terrorist slapping heroes.
Without further ado, let’s take a look at 10 screen heroes who should have been giant nerds.

Love love love… It can be both wonderful and heartbreaking at the same time but it’s a topic that will no doubt be heavy on our hearts from now until the end of time. Cornetto have released four short films in their Cupidity in the embed below (or on their Facebook page here) showing their connection with the topic of love (see the embed below). The films were shot in Hong Kong (Margot), Los Angeles (X Phobia), Istanbul (Beauty and the Geek) and London (Kismet Diner). We’ve teamed up with them to look at our very own top ten most unlikely romantic movie scenes. We’ve tried to think outside of the box a little here so please forgive us for some of the choices but all of them are close to our hearts.

TV Land, the channel for people who enjoy reruns of classic television (and shows devoted to Betty White), has tossed its hat into the reality TV game with Forever Young, a Real World-esque series (TV Land is owned by MTV parent Viacom) that puts five people under 30 and five folks over 70 in a house together to see what happens when people stop being polite and start needing Depends. Ashton Kutcher (there's a Demi Moore joke in here, and I'm not going to make it) did something similar with his series Beauty and the Geek, another "social experiment" to see
