Film CommentaryWhen you read these old stories, it becomes apparent why filmmakers are tempted to reinterpret myths through the grey, amoral landscape of the gangster film.Sowmya RajendranThe title is a mouthful — Garuda Gamana Vrishabha Vahana — but when it is about two gods battling it out, the tongue twister seems appropriate. The Kannada film has been making waves in film circles across the country, exciting viewers with its fresh and contemporary take on the Hindu trilogy of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, located within the gangster genre. What if these gods lost their superpowers and descended among us as ordinary humans? Will we still look upon their actions with awe and respect or will we shrivel away from them? Set in smalltown Mangaluru, the film narrates the story of two boys — Hari and Shiva — who meet under unusual circumstances. Hari's single mother is cleaning fish. Her sharp nose picks up another pungent odour.

Sowmya Rajendran*Major spoilers ahead In the village of Podiyankulam, a little donkey hops on the road, its front legs tied with a rope. Nobody takes notice of it. They understand that the donkey's legs have been tied to prevent it from running, going where its heart takes it. It's normal to treat it that way, the people believe. But not Karnan (Dhanush). Every time he sees the donkey, he is bothered by its bondage. The fact that it is not free. Mari Selvaraj, the director of Karnan, also frequently shows us shots of human legs, starting from the beginning when a child lies writhing on the road in the middle of an epileptic fit. The three, all raised by families that loved films, get animated, and speak about everything from the first to the last second of a film. Samba’s father would pick him up early from school and take him for a movie, Mrinal’s mother would be ready to travel with family from Madras to Hyderabad to catch the Telugu version of Salangai Oli, and Dinesh was the typical child who grew up on a diet of world masters before deciding he loved mainstream pulp too. Magic: The Gathering‘s Commander website delivered the format’s latest status update earlier this week and it’s a surprising one, to say the least.
Flash, a staple in many blue decks for some time, has been banned from play in the singleton ruleset, with the format’s committee confirming that it ultimately reached the decision in conjunction with cEDH players. The seemingly spontaneous announcement comes just days after Wizards of the Coast preemptively banned Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths card Lutri, the Spellchaser from Commander, though for vastly different reasons.
In Lutri’s case, conditions for meeting the creature’s Companion cost – to have no more than one copy of any card in a deck – were deemed too beneficiary to be used in Commander, and for obvious reason. The core issue for Flash, on the other hand, is its incredibly reliable ability to ‘cheat’ creature spells into play earlier than intended.

According to sources close to Wgtc – the same ones who told us Disney is developing a live-action Robin Hood remake and Han is returning to the Fast & Furious series – Netflix is busy working on a film based on the popular trading card game Magic: The Gathering, and they’re looking at Angelina Jolie to lead the project as Liliana Vess.
More than just a card, Liliana is a ‘human planeswalker’ – one of the most powerful beings in the universe according to Magic: The Gathering lore – as well as a master necromancer. Her story has been thoroughly explored in War of the Spark: Forsaken as well, a novel based on the game written by Greg Weisman, which Netflix will presumably be using as the blueprint for their own adaptation.
Though she’s not locked in just yet and there are other actresses being eyed, too, Jolie seems like a pretty good casting choice for Liliana.

Adam Driver’s Ben Solo/Kylo Ren was one of the best things about modern Star Wars. In his debut in The Force Awakens, the character made a strong impression as a Force user full of pent up anger and a hatred for his legacy. But, over the following two movies, that potential was never realized.
After The Last Jedi left him in an interesting place as Supreme Commander of the First Order while deepening his connection to Rey, The Rise of Skywalker undid a lot of that development and then killed him off in the finale. It’s telling that it’s taken a series of comic books to explain exactly why he fell to the dark side and how Ben Solo chose his new moniker.
