Smash S01E14: "Previews"
Arrrgh I am loving Smash so much these days. If that confuses or challenges you I'm sorry, but I have nothing but kisses to blow at the steamy soap elements that went on in last night's episode (although I plan on taking Julia to task for being a totally ridiculous baby-woman). The show is just so dead-on! It takes me back to my high school musical days and all the drama and piercingly dramatic romantic shenanigans (think old-school Degrassi High, but with grease paint). What do Degrassi High and West Beverly Hills High School have in common? Well, not only have they both been the center of television reboots, but Shenae Grimes has walked the halls of both schools. The Canadian actress got her start as Darcy Edwards on "Degrassi: The Next Generation," and after four seasons as a Christian with a bad-girl streak, Grimes packed up her life in Toronto and headed to La to enroll at West Bev on "90210."
Grimes's character on the "90210" reboot, Annie Wilson, transfered from Kansas wide-eyed and eager, but little did Grimes know that the writers of "90210" were going to put her character to the test. From an obsessive-suicidal boyfriend to becoming a high-class call girl, Grimes has put up with everything and lived to tell the tale.
The gregarious actress sat down with HuffPost TV on a recent press trip and break in Toronto to promote seasons »

On April 7, Mike Wallace, the lion of the TV news magazine died. Wallace was more than a news man. He was a former actor and game show host who found a way to seamlessly blend news and entertainment into a combination that was far more than a sum of its parts. Wallace -- first on Night Beat, then on 60 Minutes -- didn't just investigate or report. He turned interviewing into a blood sport -- becoming both one of the most liked and feared men on television as a result. He brought the same intensity and enthusiasm to every interview -- be it entertainers, world leaders or criminals -- even once calling Ayatollah Khomeini a lunatic, to his face.
This got him into trouble at times -- settling a lawsuit with General Westmoreland; losing a battle with CBS over a tobacco industry whistleblower -- but it also made him something rare »

This is from a few months ago, but is highly relevant: Laura Major of Colorlab wrote an article for Screen Slate about the restoration of the films of Jack Smith, work that began way back in 2010. I also want to note that Laura helped me identify the clips of Smith’s work found in this video put up by the Microscope Gallery. So, thank you Laura — and Colorlab! It’s been known for awhile that film distributor Canyon Cinema has been in critical condition, but their plight recently made the New York Times in a thorough article, which discusses their need to become a non-profit, an issue that has plagued the group since they founded in the 1960s.Donna k. launches her Women in Culture interview series with an informative chat with Nancy Gerstman, co-founder of the Zeitgeist Films distribution company.Robert Maier posted up two absolutely amazing photographs this week. »

Family only just told by police in Hamilton, Ontario, that actor from groundbreaking TV show had solitary death and burial
The Degrassi Junior High star Neil Hope, who played Derek "Wheels" Wheeler on the popular 1980s TV series, died in near-anonymity over four years ago, his family has confirmed after lengthy attempts to track him down.
Hope had little contact with relatives and friends in his final years, and died alone in an Ontario rooming house in 2007, his ex-fiance Christina Boulard said on Friday.
Hope's family spent years trying to track him down after hearing rumours of his death several years ago but only had it confirmed last month by police in Hamilton, Ontario.
Boulard said the former star of Canada's groundbreaking Degrassi series died on 25 November 2007 of "natural causes" at the age of 35 but declined to elaborate, only saying Hope was diabetic.
Boulard, who last saw Hope in 2002, said »

Canadian actor Stefan Brogren has paid tribute to his Degrassi: The Next Generation co-star Neil Hope after news of his 2007 death broke on Thursday.
Hope, who played Wheels in the Canadian teen TV franchise, was 35 when he passed away in 2007 from natural causes, but his relatives chose not to report his death at the time.
They have since confirmed the tragedy and his former fiancee, Christina Boulard, has released a statement explaining, "The family regrets to announce that Neil passed away in Hamilton, Ontario on November 25, 2007 of natural causes.
"There was some confusion regarding his passing that they do not wish to go public with, which is why they are only announcing his death now to the public and the media."
Brogren has taken to his Twitter.com page to acknowledge the reports, writing, "Sad day for Degrassi. Rip Neil."
Meanwhile, Stephen Stohn, an executive producer on the show, also tweeted, "We have respected the privacy of the family by not saying anything until now, but our entire team is very emotional about his passing."
Hope shot to fame in the 1980s on Degrassi Junior High and reprised his role with appearances on Degrassi High, Degrassi: The Next Generation, and Degrassi Talks. A memorial is being planned for May. »
