Macedonian director Milcho Manchevski’s 1994 feature debut, Before the Rain, was a powerful and artfully made portrayal of the violent ethnic conflicts tearing apart his homeland. The film, which premiered in Venice, took home the Golden Lion and was nominated for an Oscar, turning Manchevski into a formidable arthouse talent overnight.
That was well over twenty years ago, and in the ensuing decades the director has never quite managed to top his first feature, completing a handful of movies that received festival play or limited releases — the best of them, 2019’s Willow, won a few awards and was picked up for distribution by Kino Lorber — but failed to generate the same overall enthusiasm.
His latest work, the raunchy and flamboyant dramedy Kaymak, seems destined for the same fate. Entertaining to an extent, but also over-the-top and a bit ridiculous, the film follows two...

This review of “You Won’t Be Alone” was first published on Jan. 22 after its premiere at Sundance.
The dismal arthouse horror-drama “You Won’t Be Alone” will surely test the patience of viewers who expect a straightforward, character-driven, or even generic period chiller. Set in 19th century Macedonia, writer-director Goran Stolevski’s debut feature presents a disorienting narrative about Nevena (mostly played by Noomi Rapace), a shape-shifting teenage witch who’s kidnapped and then haunted by the malicious “wolf-eateress” conjurer Maria.
The movie’s heavy-handed and often distracting impressionistic style — lots of too-tight extreme close-ups, wobbly hand-held camerawork, whispery stream-of-conscious voiceover narration, and over-edited montages — will understandably frustrate some viewers and draw comparisons to recent dramas directed by Terrence Malick as well as Robert Eggers’ “elevated horror” movies “The Witch” and “The Lighthouse.”
Stolevski’s pretentious and mindlessly alienating style also smothers his ensemble cast’s performances and his crew’s diligent contributions,...

With a story built around witches, the East European-set You Won’T Be Alone certainly starts out like a horror film set in a medieval-ish rural Eastern European world. The location brings to mind a host of classic horror films and legends, and the time period setting and other elements are reminiscent of 2015’s The Witch. But the film soon turns in a somewhat different direction, towards fairy-tale. The Brothers Grimm variety, not Disney.

The month of March will finish with a total box office gross of around 575-580 million, and more than half of that came from The Batman. That practically ties March with last July for the third best month since the beginning of the pandemic (after last October and December), but, beside the Dark Knight, it had little new content, save the late-in-the-month release (3/25) of the Channing Tatum\Sandra Bullock adventure/rom-com, The Lost City, to support it. Most of March's backup bucks came from February’s holdovers. While the month of April lacks a mega-release a la The Batman, it has what March did not, which is a steady supply of solid titles coming out pretty much every week. A few big franchise releases are in store, including new Harry Potter and Sonic the Hedgehog films, and first up is Morbius, the newest entry in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (or...

Noomi Rapace just can't get enough of folk horror, it seems. No sooner does she adopt a sheep-headed child in "Lamb" than a "wolf eateress" shows up. Rapace herself may or may not be the eateress; it's a little hard to tell. In "You Won't Be Alone," the "Prometheus" and "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" star is not, in fact, alone, but rather co-starring alongside Anamaria Marinca and Sara Klimoska. They all take turns playing the same witch, as said witch goes about bodysnatching.

"Think you're fooling anyone? Dressed in corpses?" Focus Features has revealed a second trailer for the supernatural horror film You Won't Be Alone. This just premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival in January, and opens in theaters in April. The film is a strange, supernatural horror set in an 1800s isolated Macedonian mountain village. "A young girl is taken from her mother and transformed into a witch by an ancient, shape-shifting spirit. Left to wander feral, the young witch beholds the natural world with curiosity and wonder. After inadvertently killing a villager and assuming her body, she continues to inhabit different people, living among the villagers for years, observing and mimicking their behavior until the ancient spirit returns, bringing them full circle." Noomi Rapace stars, joined by Anamaria Marinca, Alice Englert, Carloto Cotta, Félix Maritaud, and Sara Klimoska. I watched this at Sundance and couldn't stand it, a mess of...

In You Won’t Be Alone, writer/director Goran Stolevski transports viewers back to the 19th century for his haunting fairy tale about a young girl who is transformed into a shapeshifting witch by an evil spirit, and she sets out to learn more about humanity as she takes the form of several people she crosses paths with. You Won’t Be Alone stars Sara Klimoska, Anamaria Marinca, Alice Englert, and Noomi Rapace, and it recently celebrated its world premiere at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival.
Daily Dead recently spoke with Stolevski about You Won’t Be Alone, and he discussed how monumental this project was for him, both personally and professionally, and he went into the inspirations behind the story as well. Stolevski also chatted about working with his cast and how his unconventional approach to how he shares his story with viewers ended up giving him more freedom as a storyteller.

In 19th-century Macedonia a desperate mother makes a deal with a witch. Rather than allow her only child to be taken from her immediately, the woman promises her baby at age 16 to the mythical Old Maid Maria (Anamaria Marinca), whose unwelcome arrival hovering over the innocent might indicate a desire for blood. But the mother ineffectively attempts to fool the witch. After this scarred, centuries-old being agrees to the terms and leaves her mark by ripping out the infant’s tongue, the woman feigns that her child has already been seized by the dubbed “Wolf-Eateress” and hides her away in a cave for the ensuing years. With only a small circle of blue sky peeking in through the top of the cavern to the depths below—her only connection to the outside world being frenzied food deliveries from her mother—the child grows up feral, unmoored to the society that exists just above her.

The villagers refer to her as Old Maid Maria, invoking the witch’s name as a way to make children behave. But the Wolf-Eateress — or Volkojatka, as the superstitious peasants call this shape-shifting witch — is more than just a scary story in “You Won’t Be Alone.” The adults also believe in Old Maid Maria, with her sharp black claws and a face like Freddy Krueger’s. She has terrorized the countryside for nearly two centuries, surviving on the blood of newborns and wild animals. Once, very long ago, she wanted a child of her own.
It’s a daring choice on the part of Macedonia-born writer-director Goran Stolevski to show Old Maid Maria in the film’s opening minutes. Horror movies typically try to keep the monster hidden for as long as possible, and here, the makeup looks … well, like makeup: All but unrecognizable beneath a layer of synthetic skin...

"Am I the devil?" Focus Features has unveiled the first trailer for supernatural horror thriller You Won't Be Alone, from filmmaker Goran Stolevski. This one will be premiering at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival coming up in January, before opening in theaters in April next year. The film is a supernatural horror set in an 1800s isolated Macedonian mountain village. The Sundance synopsis explains better what's going on: "A young girl is taken from her mother and transformed into a witch by an ancient, shape-shifting spirit.

Milcho Manchevski is a New York-based filmmaker from North Macedonia, who has made several films about motherhood and its impact on women. His latest film, “Willow,” takes that theme and tells it through the eyes of a shared experience of sacrifice that spans centuries.
“Willow” is a triptych of three stories, each about 30 minutes in length, which ripple subtly into each other. It’s a format of storytelling that Manchevski has favored during his career, especially in his acclaimed 1994 drama “Before the Rain,” which won the top prize at the Venice Film Festival and earned an Oscar nomination. “Willow” is North Macedonia’s official selection for the 2020 Academy Awards.
The filmmaker was asked about his preference for three-act structure during an interview as part of TheWrap’s Awards & International Screening Series. “I guess it goes back to my film school days in Illinois and [learning] avant garde cinema and structuralism and even conceptualism,...

The film will tell the story of a German-Iranian geriatric nurse. The director behind short films Under 13, Seoul, Holly, and Cheesy Films is now ready to make her feature debut with Nico. The film, which marks Eline Gehring’s graduation from the German Film and Television Academy in Berlin (Dffb), will center on a cheerful German-Iranian geriatric nurse who suddenly comes face to face with the level of xenophobia around her. While enjoying summer in Berlin with her friend Rosa, she is the victim of an attack that shatters her self-confidence and alters her everyday life. She decides that self-empowerment is the only way to fight xenophobia. Sara Fazilat, who penned the script together with director Eline Gehring and Francy Fabritz, will star in the title role. The cast of the upcoming feature also includes Javeh Asefdjah, Sara Klimoska and Andreas Marquard. Nico is being produced by the German Film.
The wives are not old in Milcho Manchevski’s “Willow,” but their tales have a folkloric resonance — even the two of the three that are set in the present day. Using a tripartite structure the director has been fond of in the past, notably in his Oscar-nominated, Venice-winning 1994 debut “Before the Rain,” Manchevski secures three outstanding female performances from his main actresses, each one leading her own story of motherhood’s griefs, guilts and impossible sacrifices. Often tragic, often cruel, “Willow,” as seen through Dp Tamas Dobos’ graceful, radiant camera, still retains a lightness and an energy that manages to be, in the end, optimistic, less a story of the willow’s weeping than of its ability to bend with almost infinite suppleness without breaking.
