Colin Stetson has announced his new album, The Love It Took to Leave You, due out on September 13th. As a preview, the acclaimed saxophonist has shared the nearly eight-minute title track.
The Love It Took to Leave You was recorded in early 2023 at Montreal’s The Darling Foundry, a 144-year-old former metalworks facility transformed into a modern art complex. “We were using the same live setup as I normally would to amplify — a full Pa in the building’s spaces,” Stetson explained in a statement. “So we were really able to move the kind of air that I can move — really saturating the room, hitting the walls hard. And then we further fleshed it out.”

The Western revival is underway. After a decade of bro-country sounds and style, where 808s and baseball caps outnumbered steel guitars and Stetsons, country is looking west for a refresh. Record labels are signing artists like Ian Munsick, Catie Offerman, and Tyler Halverson, who grew up around horses and cattle. Festivals are being held on actual ranches. And stars are stepping out, hats to boots, in fresh-off-the-runway Western wear. Even songwriters who play cowboys on TV, like Yellowstone’s Luke Grimes, are dropping country albums.

Long before he sauntered into the role of John Dutton III and seized the reins of the family ranch on Yellowstone, Kevin Costner was one of the most in-demand filmmakers and leading men in Hollywood.
Now, the Oscar- and Emmy-winner is ditching the small screen and returning to his roots.
In what might be his most ambitious project to date, Costner has directed a sprawling Western epic that will be released in theaters in two parts this summer.
This is a man who was born to saddle up and gaze into the camera from beneath a wide-brimmed Stetson, so naturally, Costner will be playing the lead role in both films.
The first trailer dropped today, and anticipation among Costner devotees and horse opera fanatics is at an all-time high.
So, without further ado, here's everything we know about Horizon: An American Saga.

The 2024 Grammy Awards showed Beyoncé in a new light as the “Texas Hold ’Em” singer went cowboy core. Born in Houston, the 42-year-old pivoted from her usual leg-baring bodysuits and elegant dresses to a skirt suit and Stetson cowboy hat.
Since debuting her full country-chic look at the Grammys, Beyoncé has released two new singles with Western touches involving banjos, violins, and a more traditional two-step beat. Then, the “16 Carriages” singer started attending New York Fashion Week.

For Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, costume designer Jacqueline West immersed herself in researching early-1920s denizens of Osage County, Oklahoma. She visited museums commemorating plundering oil tycoons and watched rare black-and-white home movies commissioned by Osage families, wealthy from retaining mineral rights to their oil-rich reservation. Osage costume consultant Julie O’Keefe ensured the authenticity and nuanced storytelling of traditional clothing and materials, which endure long after the tribe’s forced relocation from Missouri to Oklahoma in 1872.
“I had these 10-foot boards of townspeople, on every level, all the way around my warehouse,” says West about designing the introductory sequence in which World War I veteran Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio) arrives in bustling Fairfax and encounters the two worlds he soon infiltrates. Suited white merchants and disheveled fieldworkers seek their fortune, as Osage Nation members don attire representing their cultural pride and wealth. Earlier this week, two filmmaking titans gathered for a special conversation. Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg, who last chatted publicly about The Fabelmans, participated in a post-screening DGA talk following a screening of Killers of the Flower Moon. “You are the master of our medium and this is your masterpiece, Marty,” Spielberg told his dear friend.
While the conversation touched on a number of fascinating insights into the making of the historical epic, including how seeing Silence convinced the Osage consultants that Scorsese was the right choice to direct, Spielberg shared a particularly great bit: “It’s so amazing to see Bobby D and Leo D in this film together. This is your sixth collaboration with Leo and your eleventh with Bobby. You are only three films shy of tying the record with John Ford, who directed John Wayne fourteen times, so you can’t quit yet with Bobby.”

National Geographic has released the first look at its upcoming season of the anthology series ‘Genius’, which will focus on the lives and legacies of two of the most influential civil rights leaders in American history: Martin Luther King Jr and Malcolm X.
The series, titled ‘Genius: MLK/X’, will explore the formative years, pioneering accomplishments, dueling philosophies and key personal relationships of both men, who rose to prominence in the 1950s and 1960s and shaped the movement for racial equality and justice.
The series will feature Kelvin Harrison Jr (‘The Trial of the Chicago 7’) as King, Aaron Pierre (‘The Underground Railroad’) as X, Weruche Opia (‘I May Destroy You’) as Coretta Scott King, and Jayme Lawson (‘The Batman’) as Betty Shabazz. The cast also includes Ron Cephas Jones (‘This is Us’), who passed away in August 2023, in one of his last roles.

And so Justified says goodbye to one Boyd, and welcomes back another.
In the concluding chapter of the revival miniseries Justified: City Primeval, Timothy Olyphant’s Raylan Givens finally had his long-awaited showdown with the Oklahoma Wildman himself, Boyd Holbrook’s Clement Mansell. But in a sign of how much Raylan had changed since the original series, it was a showdown he did not want, and had put off for many episodes. And when Raylan does shoot Mansell,...

Timothy Olyphant just can’t stay away from cowboy hats.
In 2019, Olyphant reprised his role as rage-filled Wild West sheriff Seth Bullock in Deadwood: The Movie. A year later, he cameoed on The Good Place wearing the familiar Stetson and other wardrobe from his iconic role as trigger-happy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens from Justified. Later that year, he began a recurring role on The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett as Tattooine lawman Cobb Vanth, who was basically Space Raylan.

U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) had a time-honored tradition during the six seasons of the original “Justified.” The rakish law man would chase a baddie across Kentucky back roads and trailer parks. Bullets flew, and moonshine was consumed. Still, Givens always made time for a philosophical and deep conversation with his prey before the final showdown. Raylan would learn something humanizing about his nemesis’ motivation and, inevitably, realize he himself could be a dick on occasion. These talks often featured Boyd Crowder, Givens’ frenemy played by Walton Goggins with a mouthful of Biden-white teeth, a shock of black hair and buckets of country wisdom. They were so humanizing that you often forgot Boyd was a white supremacist turned drug dealer.
In “Justified: Primeval City,” Givens’ nemesis is killer and White Stripes aficionado Clement Mansell aka the Oklahoma Wildman. At a crucial moment, Mansell (Boyd Holbrook) sizes up the now middle-aged Givens.

In the first episode of the new miniseries Justified: City Primeval, our old friend Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) — the quick-drawing, fast-talking, Stetson-wearing U.S. marshal from Harlan, Kentucky — is called to testify about a fugitive he brought back to Detroit. Defense attorney Carolyn Wilder (Aunjanue Ellis) calls him out for having threatened to put her client in the trunk of a car if he didn’t behave. This is the kind of stunt Raylan pulled all the time during the original run of Justified, and we found it charming as all get-out back then.

Of all our craft Best of 2022 lists, film scores was the one where there was the widest list of nominees and least amount of consensus about a top 10. There was just such a wide variety of great work done that delineating what was best wasn’t always clear.
What was clear from our picks, however, was that a number of the best composers working today — from Michael Giacchino to Michael Abels — were on their game in 2022; it was also apparent that this was a year of innovative uses of film music that played a subtle and almost sound design-like role. And by no surprise, so much of that best work came from director-composer collaborations that started early and stretched over many months, sometimes over year, and evolved to find the best way for the music sit in the film.
Chris O’Falt, Steve Greene, David Ehrlich, and Erik Adams also contributed to this article.

There’s a racism problem on the American right. Racists want that problem to look like Kanye West and Herschel Walker.
In the middle of Ye’s gimp-suited rant on Alex Jones’ morally and financially bankrupt show yesterday, between attacking the supposed godlessness of Dave Chappelle — a practicing Muslim — and expressing admiration for Hitler, the artist formerly known as Kanye West slipped in a word of praise for Georgia Senate candidate Herschel Walker.
“Meanwhile we want to knock Herschel Walker, but Herschel Walker changed his life for Christ” Ye declared.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but Season 22 of The Voice is a tricky-ass one. On one hand, we’ve got a handful of seriously talented contestants. On the other — as always, I suppose — we have no guarantee that our fellow viewers will vote through the seriously talented ones (like Team Camila Cabello’s Devix, who I already miss) instead of just, say, the cute one (Team Blake Shelton’s Brayden Lape) or the country one (Team Blake’s Bryce Leatherwood).

The twist of Searchlight’s horror-comedy The Menu is perfectly (under)scored by its music.
That sound is courtesy of Colin Stetson, a composer with a background in woodwinds and a breathy appreciation for horror and tension. “There are certain things that I do with breath and with a semblance of breath to trigger the same sort of experiential reaction from an audience,” he tells The Hollywood Reporter. “Air is everything and so the manipulation of air, be it through actual literal breath recorded and manipulated or as it’s being projected through an instrument, will do certain things.”
Breath and manipulation are rather fittingly thematically aligned with The Menu, his latest project from director Mark Mylod and co-writers Seth Reiss and Will Tracy’s that is a part-hilarious, part-horrifying examination of hunger, elitism and the power of food. Set in a secluded,...

Sharpen your knives (or your record needles) for a new addition to your vinyl soundtrack collection. Composer Colin Stetson's original score for "The Menu" is getting the vinyl treatment from Waxwork Records, in partnership with Milan Records, early next year.
In "The Menu," per the official Searchlight Pictures synopsis, "A couple (Anya Taylor-Joy and Nicholas Hoult) travels to a coastal island to eat at an exclusive restaurant where the chef (Ralph Fiennes) has prepared a lavish menu, with some shocking surprises." Said chef — and possible human hunter — can be seen giving his guests a 45-second running head start in the trailer for "The Menu." But with the vinyl edition of "The Menu (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack"), you'll have about a three-month head start to pre-order it before it ships in February 2023.

“I haven’t seen this story told exactly this way,” reflects composer Colin Stetson about “The Menu.” For our recent webchat he continues, “That’s a rarity in a world of recycled storytelling. There are a couple of moments that are so real that every time I see them I am blown away.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
“The Menu” is about a young couple, played by Anya Taylor-Joy and Nicholas Hoult, who go to a remote island to dine at an exclusive restaurant. Once there, the renowned chef, Julian Slowik (Ralph Fiennes) presents his creative dishes. As the courses are unveiled, surprises present dangers for the customers.
SEEMark Mylod interview: ‘Succession’ director
Stetson wrote the score for the film, directed by Mark Mylod. He explains, “There’s a kind of rhythmic structure to the way the film was written. Certain things can’t be done until certain moments happen.

“Yes, I’m dying”.
That’s the stark tabloid headline People magazine runs in gigantic letters alongside a photo of Dottie Roman in the first episode of Monarch, Fox’s lavish new musical soap about a ruthless country music dynasty.
Dottie, played by Susan Sarandon with ballsy swagger and a closer-to-God blowout, seethes over the cover story about her own terminal cancer as she primps for her last ever awards show. She’s the “queen of country music” – think Dolly Parton big – and she’s determined to go out with a smile on her face, even if it’s as fake as her outrage. Dottie leaked the story to the press herself, we eventually learn. She probably even signed off on the picture – red lips pursed in defiance, peeking out from under the wide brim of her signature cowboy hat with its diamante band. Everything in the cloistered world of country music runs through Dottie.

When one thinks of Stanley Kubrick's 1964 Cold War satire "Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb," the most iconic image that comes to mind is that of a hollering Slim Pickens straddling a descending hydrogen bomb. The journey to that image was a royal pain for the celebrated filmmaker.
"Strangelove" co-writer Terry Southern penned a memoir piece titled "Strangelove Outtake; Notes from the War Room," originally published in Grand Street magazine in 1994. He describes the pressure that Kubrick was under to employ Peter Sellers in multiple roles, which the Columbia suits had determined was the sole reason for the success of "Lolita" (it wasn't). So Kubrick agreed to cast Sellers in "at least four major roles," three of which made the final cut: Group Captain Lionel Mandrake, President Merkin Muffley, and the titular Doctor Strangelove.

This Westworld review contains spoilers.
Westworld Season 4 Episode 2
One of the biggest strengths of the first season of Westworld was its massive ensemble cast. Some of them were known performers taking on new characters, with established actors like Ed Harris as the mysterious Man in Black and Anthony Hopkins adding a little class to the story of a very adult theme park full of robots just waiting to go kill-crazy. However, the performers who weren’t as well-known stood out because they all had very distinctive looks, and few characters in Westworld stood out quite like Angela Sarafyan. With her striking, wide-set hazel eyes, Sarafyan’s Clementine Pennyfeather was undoubtedly a favorite of guests of the park, if only because of her kind heart and assigned profession. The “hooker with a heart of gold” trope brought to life.
Clementine always had a dreamy sort of innocence, if only because she...
