On July 19, “America’s Got Talent” returned with more spectacular auditions on Episode 8 of Season 17. Host Terry Crews welcomed series judges Simon Cowell, Sofia Vergara, Heidi Klum and Howie Mandel back to the dais with performances from the seventh set of entertainers. But who were the best performers from the episode? And did any move forward that shouldn’t have? Below we rank the 13 acts who advanced from worst to best.
See ‘America’s Got Talent’ episode 7 performances ranked: Top 11 acts ranked from worst to best
Season 17 Episode 8 rankings:
13) The Lazy Generation: What a waste of time! An amusing waste of time, but a waste of time nonetheless. This is what happens when someone watches “Jackass” one too many times and decides to replicate it. A hard pass from me, but social media seemed to actually like it (somewhat). Go figure!

I’m not going to kvetch about American Idol failing to reward one of its dozens of worthy grads with a Thursday-night performance slot — there are only six weeks left, after all! — and instead using it to promote the doing-just-fine-already former X Factor judge Demi Lovato.

Once you’ve tasted Marcus Samuelsson’s cooking or watched Matt Damon pummel an enemy with his bare hands (on the big screen, of course), it’s hard to get excited about watching some up-and-comer try to pull off an imitation. And that was my worry going into Kelly Clarkson Night on American Idol.

50 years ago The Beatles took the United States by storm with their appearance on ‘The Ed Sullivan Show,’ so on Feb. 9 a massive amount of stars — from Katy Perry to Ed Sheeran to Sir Paul himself — took the stage to honor the legendary band.
It was 50 years to the day on Feb. 9 that The Beatles made their first appearance in the U.S. on The Ed Sullivan Show, and CBS did not skimp on the anniversary celebration. Ugh, can you believe it? American Idol is back to giving us hour-long Thursday episodes. I thought these salad days of two-hour, Ben Hur-like installments would never end, but I was wrong. Scott Savol wrong.
But girl, Harry Connick Jr. still found the time to slay us with one-liners, like an actual adult we’d actually enjoy spending time with. The adult-iness of the rapport at the Idol judges’ table can’t be underestimated. Polite puns. Knowing asides. Incisive commentary on each other’s commentary. Remember, it was only a year ago that Nicki Minaj yelled obscenities while Mariah Carey muttered Mean Girls references at no one. I like Nicki and love Mariah, but that was more painful than any Lazaro Arbos ballad. This season is like a sweet, saucy, fun-loving Allison Iraheta take on “Hot Stuff.” You know I don’t say that about everyone.
Thursday’s Atlanta auditions were solid!

American Idol has spent the last few years making headlines for its rotating cavalcade of judges, and today is no exception: Harry Connick Jr. and returnee Jennifer Lopez have been officially announced as Keith Urban‘s co-panelists on the 13th season of the show. Connick was one of the show’s standout mentors of the past few seasons, and Lopez was — hmm, amiable? Fine? Un-hated? — during her two-season stint as an Idol barrister. Is this changeup what the show needs?
I’ve argued this in seasons’ past, but American Idol has never been about the judges’ table. You can claim that Simon Cowell was the heart of the show for the first nine seasons, but the fact is, Cowell helped make the show great not because he was mean or funny or even critical, but because he made the show’s vocalists competitive. That’s what any great reality show...

The “American Idol Live!” 2013 tour touched down in Newark, NJ, Wednesday night, with many of Season 12′s familiar themes — the undeniable awesomeness of Candice Glover and Kree Harrison, the inscrutable warbling of Lazaro Arbos (and its Pavlovian effect on teen girls) — in tact.

Among them: Amber Holcomb’s mojo disappearing faster than Nicki Minaj at the end of the Idol season; Devin Velez developing a stage presence that (almost) matches his powerful pipes; Angie Miller getting torn between two...

Did Kree, Angie, or Candice descend to hell?
1. Candice, Kree, and Angie sing a terribly dubbed version of “Who Says” by Selena Gomez. They almost gain the energy to speed up their collective saunter, but it doesn’t happen. Stumping for Ford Fiesta is tiring, I guess. And so is pretending to believe in the poetic power of a Selena Gomez song.
2. As part of their “Fiesta Mission,” the three ladies head over to a high school and sing with the choir. I wanted Candice to announce, “Everyone Here Is Getting A Ford Fiesta” before walking away and leaving them nothing.
3. I have to agree with Jimmy “Aged Tortoise Emperor” Iovine about Angie’s performance of “Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word.” Solid, but underwhelming considering how big and emotional the song is. She’s no Leona Lewis.
4. Just noticed that Paul Jolley and Devin Velez are sitting together in the audience.

It’s no secret that American Idol‘s ratings have slipped in Season 12, and tonight — despite some stellar performances by the Top 4 ladies — we witnessed several moments where you could practically feel the Nielsen numbers dropping by tenths.
There was Randy Jackson leering at Angie Miller after a particularly harsh critique and declaring, “I do like the leather shorts!” [Tonight's mathematical truth: Randy + the word "Leather" x Sexual Innuendo = Saw-level horror.] There was Nicki Minaj, trying to insert herself (her favorite pastime) into the middle of one of Mariah Carey’s critiques, and later, Ryan Seacrest breaking up one of the female judges’ tiffs with a “someone needs to be put in the corner!

Ryan Seacrest kicked off Top 4 results night on Season 12 of American Idol with a speech that — depending on your outlook in life, or at least reality television — sounded either incredibly hopeful or deeply ominous: “I will announce some shocking news that will affect the judges and turn the competition upside down. It’s gonna be another serious night of drama.”
Ryan, who’s hummed along this season as quietly and efficiently — and with as little fanfare — as a high-end refrigerator, had already hinted at a “surprise twist” in the Idol proceedings at the end of Wednesday’s Top 4 performance show.

Shortly after his elimination from "American Idol" Season 12, Lazaro Arbos gave an interview in which he mentioned that one of his female co-competitors wasn't a great person to spend time with. The singers still in the competition for the Top 4 don't have a lot of time to keep up with this kind of news. But it's kind of hard to miss something like that.
After their Top 4 performances, we asked Candice Glover, Amber Holcomb and Angie Miller what they thought about Lazaro's comments.
What did Lazaro say exactly? In an interview with ABC News Radio, the eliminated singer said, "I'm not gonna say names and I don't wanna sound rude, but I think that one woman in particular is crazy and she wants to win! She thinks that we're in 'The Hunger Games' and she's fighting for her life."

In an interview with TV Line, Arbos says, "There's no way that five guys could've left in a row. ... Not saying that they choose who goes home, that's not what I'm saying."

Fox hasn’t officially confirmed it, but sources close to American Idol are buzzing that Season 12 Top 4 week will be a two-theme kind of party: One-Hit Wonders and Contestant’s Choice.
The former — which topped an At&T “fan’s choice” vote — has the potential to be fantastic, as long as producers don’t try to force the contestants toward novelty hits or tired old songs that have been covered on Idol a million times before (and simply happen to qualify under the one-hit wonder header).

It was an all-girls club this week on American Idol, following last week’s elimination of last boy standing Lazaro Arbos. But on Thursday’s results show, the Fierce Five shrunk to a Fab Four. The fallen idol spoke to EW.
Janelle Arthur was sent home.
Arthur didn’t appear too dismayed about her elimination during the taping, and she was still all smiles when talking with press after the show.
“I thought they were going to use the save, just not on me,” Arthur said. She also shared what she told fellow contestant Candice Glover before they walked onstage...

Now it gets interesting.
Week after week, we've watched American Idol's male finalists leave the competition. It hardly mattered in which order the guys went home – an all-female final five was basically preordained from the beginning. But after Lazaro Arbos left last week, all bets were off for Thursday's elimination night.
It says something about the quality of this season's finalists that any of them could win the competition – and they will all probably find some niche in the music industry after the show.
But before we got the results, we heard from a lot of old-school Idol contestants.

American Idol‘s math has always been fairly simple: He (or she) with the most viewer votes wins. The one with the lowest weekly tally meets a fate uglier than a Lazaro Arbos key change. And the ratio of judges’ feedback to actual contestant performances is roughly 237 to 1.
But in Season 12, one set of numbers simply hasn’t made sense: With a finale set for May 16 and a mere 10 finalists in the mix, only a Judges’ Save or a non-elimination week — without a subsequent double exit — would stop the season from ending prematurely. And you know Uncle Nigel and his...

Lazaro Arbos decided after Top 9 week on American Idol that he wasn’t going to let the judges’ critiques make him cry again — even if he had to adopt a dismissive attitude to stop any percolating waterworks.
The Season 12 sixth-place finisher stopped by Idology HQ for a candid, sometimes eyebrow-raising chat about his memorable audition to “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” his feelings about Mariah Carey praising his “courage” while failing to discuss his actual singing, and a couple of high-profile on-stage snafus (the botched lyrics in his Top 8 Week trio, and what he says was a very last-minute key change...

Now that Lazaro Arbos has gone home (finally) to set his sights on Glee (please, no!) it's Ladies' Night every night on American Idol. If there's one way to ensure that this year's winner isn't another white guy with a guitar, having no guys left in the competition is certainly it.
Tonight the ladies will sing a song from their year of birth and then sing a song by a Diva, with a head nod from Ryan to Mariah. Will anyone be brave enough to pick a song by Mimi? We'll see...
Round One: Songs From the Year They Were Born (aka, the round that makes me feel old)
Candice Glover was born in 1989. She's chosen a song by former Idol judge, Paula Abdul: "Straight Up Now Tell Me." This is a really interesting take on the song. It's a little Bluesy with an infusion of something I can't quite put my finger on.

Pay no attention to the man alongside the curtain!
Yes, folks, this week on American Idol, Jimmy Iovine surrendered his “mentoring” role and pre-performance “advisory” sessions and instead put on his Justin Bieber Bigboy Collection (Tm) cap to bark like a snake-oil salesman and rally a nation of speed-dialers behind Angie Miller and Amber Holcomb after their Round 1 “Songs From the Year They Were Born” numbers.
Did Jimmy possibly pre-tape his commentary before the live Top 5 telecast? It sure felt that way, considering his effusiveness about Amber’s moderately successful stab at Mariah Carey and Angie’s vocally dubious Pretenders...

The voting order may have been a little strange, but "American Idol" ultimately ended up with what I would argue was the correct Top 5. In the auditions and sudden death rounds, the judges pretty clearly decided this was going to be a year for a female winner and the deck was stacked, but just because the deck was stacked didn't mean that America wouldn't find some way to screw things up. And guess what? We're all good, America. Did Lazaro Arbos last a month longer than he should have? Absolutely. Should Curtis Finch Jr. have stuck around for a few...

Lazaro Arbos may not have won American Idol (TV), but he did win America's heart. With his inspiring story, Ricky Ricardo looks, and gentle nature, the Cuban-born, Florida-bred singer scored high marks with viewers early on. Despite some obstacles in his path, most would agree that "Laz" has come a long way from Chicago where he first auditioned for the show last fall. Lazaro suffers from a severe stutter that has plagued him since the age of six. Despite extensive speech and language therapy, the 22-year-old continues to struggle with this condition while speaking. He stunned judges at his audition, however, when all evidence of the stutter disappeared once he began singing "Bridge Over Troubled Water." It was then that his journey began, leading him up to a sixth place finish in the Season 12 competition. His eventual elimination on last week's show did not come as a big surprise, as...

Five ladies under one roof is a lot of estrogen, but apparently not too much for American Idol's season 12 finalists, who seem more like a sisterhood than competitors. People caught up with each woman - Amber Holcomb, Kree Harrison, Janelle Arthur, Angie Miller and Candice Glover - on Tuesday in L.A., where they gave us a behind-the-scenes look at their lives vying for one of the biggest honors on TV ... while still remaining best friends. Read on to find out five things about this season's Idol finalists that you won't learn from watching the show: 1. Candice is surprisingly...

Now that Lazaro Arbos has been eliminated, he's been talking to the press about his experience on American Idol. And not everything he's saying is positive -- he's calling one of the remaining contestants "crazy." Also in today's Roundup, tour dates have been announced for American Idol Live! Tour 2013. And producer Nigel Lythgoe is finally addressing the lack of chemistry among the season 12 judges.

Now that Idol’s gotten rid of all those pesky males they never even wanted to let through security, it’s up to Angie, Candice, Janelle, Kree, and Amber (left to right) to prove that the winner of season 12 should be a woman even if the concept of blatant producer manipulation did not exist. So let’s hear it, ladies! Tonight the Top 5 will take on two themes: “Divas” and “Birth Year.” My Power List is below — leave your own in the comments….
5. Amber Holcomb Her wide-ranging voice can soar, but as a performer, the bottom-two-dweller has yet to make a real impact.

‘American Idol’ has made television history again last week after contestant Lazaro Arbos was the last male contestant to be voted out of the top 10. His elimination made news, as it’s the first time in the reality competition’s 12-year run that the top five performers will be all women. Arbos was denied the judges’ save on Thursday night after singing ‘(They Long to Be) Close to You’ by Richard Chamberlain and ‘Angels’ by Robbie Williams. Arbos generously took the time recently to participate in a press conference call to talk about his elimination from ‘American Idol.’ Among other things, the singer discussed how his love of performing and music [ Read More ]

It’s no secret that American Idol‘s Season 12 men weren’t the strongest group in show history, but does that make the all-female Top 5 any less worthy of their successes?
On this week’s installment of Idology, my cohost Melinda Doolittle and I refute what we think is a flawed line of logic that’s undermining a spectacular, highly creative group of contestants — and we’ve got plenty of evidence to back it up.

Whether you loved it or hated it, Glee's "Shooting Star" episode has definitely made an impact. The Fox hit's polarizing April 11 installment, which featured a shooting at McKinley High, saw a 20 percent ratings increase from the last original episode, which aired three weeks ago, bringing in 6.8 million viewers and a 2.4 rating in the adults 18-40 demo. (Glee lead-in American Idol also saw a ratings boost with Thursday's results show, which found the final male contestant Lazaro Arbos getting the boot, attracting 12.7 million viewers and a 3.1 rating.) In the episode, Sue (Jane Lynch) was fired after saying the gun was hers and had gone off accidentally when she was cleaning it. However, we...

With the final five contestants on ‘American Idol’ consisting of all women, I’m left wondering if it’s really fair that the producers have been pushing for a woman to win all along.
HollywoodLife.com exclusively found out that the producers have decided who they want in the finale, and they’ll do everything “in their power” to make it happen — but isn’t American Idol supposed to be based on America’s votes?
‘American Idol’ Should Be America’s Vote
While I’m all about a girl winning Idol, and personally believe that Angie Miller has had it in the bag since the beginning, it’s a little ridiculous that producers have chosen who they want in the final. It basically tells us that our votes probably don’t matter.
