Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” is set to dominate the original song race. Oscar voters will likely pick all three contenders from the blockbuster for the original song shortlist: Billie Eilish’s tear-inducing ballad “What Was I Made For,” Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” and Ryan Gosling’s pitiful song of feeling inadequate “I’m Just Ken.”
Mark Ronson and songwriting partner Andrew Wyatt wrote the latter two, while Eilish partnered with brother Finneas on her tune. However, with only two nominations allowed in this category, it will be left to the music branch to decide which two they pick.
Lenny Kravitz eyes a spot on the list with “Road to Freedom,” a song he penned for George C. Wolfe’s “Rustin.” The soulful song’s horns and trombones are key to this composition, which accompanies the film’s end credits.

Note: Spoilers for “Theater Camp” are included.
Searchlight Pictures’ “Theater Camp” is a delightfully fun look at the wacky world of youth theater camps that draws inspiration from some of the best documentary features. “‘Metallica Some Kind of Monster’ or ‘War Room’ [was] a huge influence on us,” codirector Nick Lieberman told TheWrap. “Frederick Wiseman’s ‘Salesman,’ those movies all have moments that are some of my favorite funniest moments in movies. The challenge was how can you create that feeling, or create that spirit or write to that spirit?”
Ben Platt and Noah Galvin play two of the teachers working with the camp’s budding actors. They also worked on the film’s original songs (with Galvin also acting as cowriter on the script). “This movie is an amalgam of all of us,” Galvin said. “The characters we play are little scrapbooks of all of the teachers and theater people...

Not since Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s “Good Will Hunting” has a group of actors (and actual friends) so felicitously taken a movie into their own hands.
Two childhood pals, Tony winner Ben Platt (“Dear Evan Hansen”) and “The Bear” star Molly Gordon, alongside Gordon’s “Booksmart” co-star Noah Galvin, plus Nick Lieberman, their go-to video director, spent the early days of the pandemic writing “Theater Camp,” itself a feature version of their 2020 18-minute mockumentary of the same name.
Platt, Gordon, and Galvin also starred in both the short (financed by Platt) and the feature film, while Lieberman directed the short and co-directed the feature with Gordon. The four are also all credited producers. Talk about do-it-yourself.
Platt and Lieberman have collaborated on improv and sketch comedy videos since they were just teenagers. “He is like a vital voice in the group as a director and a writer,” Platt told IndieWire.

We've known for a few years that there are dueling Fred Astaire films in development — one starring Tom Holland playing the legendary entertainer, the other featuring Jamie Bell as Astaire and Margaret Qualley as Ginger Rogers. Both are seeing some new moves today, with The Hollywood Reporter bringing word that the Holland film now has Paddington's Paul King as director and Lee Hall re-writing the script.
The untitled, Holland-starring film has Lee Hall also now on board as writer. It'll focus on Astaire and his sister, Adele Astaire. The two were inseparable for more than 20 years, moving out of a simple Midwestern vaudeville act in the early part of the 20th Century to Broadway and London’s West end in the 1920s. Adele Astaire was initially the face of the act but eventually, Fred Astaire’s consummate stage skills eclipsed hers. The duo parted in 1932 when his sister married, which was a blow to Fred,...

The Oscar Best Original Song nominees list is packed with a powerhouse roster of talent, including Rihanna, Lady Gaga, David Byrne. That sets up a collision of current musical giants come Oscar night. Of course, there’s Diane Warren, the recipient of an Honorary Oscar last month and a musical giant in her own right. With Oscar nominations voting closing on Tuesday, Hugh Jackman took his case against Ryan Reynolds’ potential awards attention for “Spirited” from Twitter to late-night television on Monday.

Ryan Reynolds is sick of his own voice. Not from talking, mind you. But from singing.
As it turns out, while Reynolds’ Christmas movie “Spirited” – released on Apple TV+ in December – became a favorite of families over the holiday season, it also became a favorite in Reynolds’ household. Specifically with his kids.
“I’m so touched that I have something that they want to watch four times a day,” he told TheWrap during a recent interview. “It’s both alarming and deeply flattering.”
As many others have, his kids latched onto the number “Good Afternoon,” a showstopping piece in the middle of the movie set in Dickensian times in which Reynolds and Will Ferrell duet, tap dance and sidestep explosions.

Hugh Jackman begged the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Wednesday not to nominate Ryan Reynolds and a standout number in his Apple musical “Spirited” for Best Original Song.

“Now, Ryan Reynolds getting a nomination in the Best Song category would make the next year of my life insufferable. I have to spend a year with him shooting [the third] ‘Deadpool’ [film],” Jackman explained. “Trust me, it would be impossible. It would be a problem.”

(Jackman announced in September that he will reprise his role of Wolverine in the upcoming “Deadpool” sequel.)

The Society of Composers & Lyricists has announced the nominations for its fourth annual honors for music in films, TV and video games, with French composer Alexandre Desplat and American composer Bear McCreary each scoring double nominations.
Scl, the primary organization for professional media composers, will present its awards Feb. 15 at the Skirball Cultural Center, with singer-actor-songwriter Darren Criss as host.
Voting ended Wednesday night in seven categories, just hours after the Motion Picture Academy announced its shortlists for song and score for 2022 films. The contrast between the lists is striking, with only five score nominees and six song contenders matching those on the 15-title Oscar shortlists.

A core musical moment in Sean Anders’ Apple TV+ “Christmas Carol” riff “Spirited” involves Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrell repeatedly hurling the same insult at strangers set to song and dance in Dickensian London, and as it turns out, the whole thing was Reynolds’ idea.

Beyoncé and Sara Bareilles could add Emmy trophies to their awards shelves this year, having been nominated in key music categories Tuesday by the Television Academy.
Beyoncé’s “Homecoming” special on Netflix was nominated in six categories, and four of those include a nod for the pop superstar herself. Only one of those is in a music category; she’s nominated for music direction of a variety special alongside co-music director Derek Dixie (a first-time nominee). Her other nods are as a producer, co-director and writer of the special.
Bareilles, nominated last year for her performance as Mary Magdalene in “Jesus Christ Superstar,” was cited this year as co-songwriter of a new song on CBS’s Tony Awards, “This One’s for You.” Her co-host on that show, Josh Groban, shares the nomination and is up for his first Emmy.
They were the most high-profile performers cited by Emmy voters in the seven music categories.
