Our American Idol “journey” has come to an end, but let us not weep for what’s been cancelled, let us instead go to iTunes and download the Season 15 winner’s new single. Hey, from a songwriting vantage point, it may not be “Home,” but it definitely ranks above “No Boundaries” and “Inside Your Heaven” — and we bought those, too. And if this show can produce one more bona fide radio/touring superstar, maybe the inevitable reboot will happen sooner than expected, no?

American Idol‘s 13th season premieres tonight with a new(-ish) cast of judges including the irascible Dolphin Tale star Harry Connick Jr., budding U-Turn actress Jennifer Lopez, and grown-up Peppermint Patty Keith Urban. Maybe they’ll do a good job! I don’t know! But I’ll be there watching because American Idol is still, despite sinking (but relatively phenomenal) ratings, the greatest singing cotillion on TV. Here are five reasons why.
5. The Hollywood rounds give you the best highs and most hilarious lows.
Twelve seasons in, the Hollywood rounds of American Idol remain the most underrated part of the show and maybe the entire reality-competition genre. The bustling energy of the second tryout, where attention-starved contestants who’ve passed the city auditions jump to Hollywood and attempt group numbers in a Fanny Brice-on-roller-skates way, is often the best indicator of how truly talented and likable the auditioning contestants are.

Before we jump into the parent-approved Rock Power of Top 7 week, a word about the group performances that I omit in my recaps: They are just so terrible. Thank God we have a fluorescent-haired watchdog like Nicki Minaj to look Kree Harrison and Janelle Arthur in their buttermilk-sweet eyes and howl, "Cheesy, please Stop It." Ultimately, the group performances don't really factor into the home vote, so it's safer to evaluate each remaining singer based on what they achieve in solo performances. Because what they usually achieve is "being better than Lazaro," which I consider the unofficial theme every single week.
Anyway, here we go, #7-1. I give these kids credit for belting out old rock anthems, because the playlist looks like a gym teacher's iPod. Ride that power chord, little Lazaro!
7. Lazaro Arbos, "We Are the Champions"
Lazaro clearly wants my vote, because 1) he wasn't awful this week, and 2) he was sweaty.

Look at these dudes. Three pleasant, symmetrical rascals with gay posture who just wanted to impress mentor Smokey Robinson with their dotty croquet uniforms, conjure some soul on Motown/Detroit night, and look like they belong on American Idol. Did they succeed? Ahahaha. If the goal was to deepen the tracks of Smokey Robinson's tears by making him Weep Uncontrollably, then yes. Otherwise, they don't fare so well in this week's rankings.
Here they are, the eight remaining Idol contestants' performances from Motown Night ranked #8-1.
8. Lazaro Arbos, "For Once In My Life"
At least Lazaro knows I'm mad at him, otherwise why would he wear greaser attire and slick his hair like the hot prostitute from A Single Man? I'm drawing a blank. Meet me in the parking lot, buddy!
On the same token, Lazaro intentionally peeved me this week by choosing Stevie Wonder's "For Once In My Life,...

Tonight’s installment of American Idol kicked off with chyrons promising “a story of innovators, a story of visionaries.” And then we jumped right into a theme that Idol has coughed up roughly 26 times over the course of 12 seasons: “Detroit: The Music of Motor City” (Aka Motown Night Plus a Random Madonna Track).

Well, that was the weirdest possible way to introduce season 12's finalists to America, wouldn't you say? To recap, Ryan Seacrest sat the 20 remaining hopefuls in what looked like a cramped classroom (very Up the Down Staircase) and led each surviving finalist through a long corridor and to the stage for a victory performance. In case that wasn't bizarre enough, Ryan sometimes gave the performers little pep talks before they hit the stage. And we all know what a sympathetic character Seacrest is.
"You did it. All the hard work paid off," Seacrest muttered to Candice Glover like a scripted high-school guidance counselor. So, so weird.
Here's what's important. The ten finalists (chosen by home viewer votes) were announced, and now it's our job to rank them in two ways: 1) by merit, based solely on who deserves to be the next American Idol most; 2) by likeliness to win, based solely...

Ten more dames. Ten more billiards lounge renditions of songs that your great-grandmother can safely die to. And about four or five that ruled. Let's rank 'em!
10. Zoanette Johnson, Tina Tuner's "What's Love Got to Do With It?"
Well, here's the good news: Now Lil Rounds can claim her rendition of "What's Love Got to Do With It?" from season eight isn't the single worst version in Idol history. Zoanette is truly a mesmerizing, popcorn-worthy spectacle deserving of P.T. Barnum's time, but you knew she'd fall apart the minute actual singing was required of her. Mariah can claim that her take on "The Circle of Life" worked because of "her backstory" (uh, in Liberia? That's why Zoanette's a natural at crooning about lion birth?), but it was really thanks to the instrumentation's campy grandeur, which tonally matched Zoanette's Wendy Williams-meets-Pagliacci hissy-fit theater. Are we locked in? Ready? American Idol's twelfth season is about to launch into its most awesome (and stressful, if you're me) section -- the Top 40 shakedown and the mega blitz of eliminations that we, the mean home viewers, get to decide. It's do or die for your weird personal favorites: That chick with the dreadlocks and beads who sings Donny Hathaway? She might be deported back to Birkenstock Island. That closeted homosexual with the Manilow confidence? Randy Jackson might decapitate him. Ahhh! Gay carnage.
Now that the winning 40 guys and girls of Season 12 have been announced, let's take a look back at the auditions we liked most. I've ranked them because I'm compulsive about this sort of thing.
5. Paul Jolley
Yes, yes, I hear you -- shut up, Louis, about your affection for the effete Southern balladeer who refuses to sing anything but pathetic country music of the 21st century.

A few notes before we begin.
1) Get out your VHS of Paris Is Burning, because I just realized Nicki Minaj talks exactly like Venus Xtravaganza. I'm always expecting her to shout, "Touch this skin! Touch all of this skin!" at Mariah, who might just be Dorian Corey.
2) Keith Urban is living proof that most country stars dress like they're in a 2001 Matchbox 20 video.
3) Randy Jackson is still a cauldron of nothing.
Moving along! Idol's second day of season 12 auditions was damn fruitful, as 16 acts won Hollywood tickets and I didn't truly hate any of them. Can you believe it? I am filled with true hatred, and I had nowhere to displace it. In fact, the one auditioner who seemed like an obvious burnout turned out to be most provocative and cool singer of the competition so far. Let's visit with her first, shall we?
1. Kezban Sauerbier: Weird. And Thank God.

The 12th season of American Idol opened not with Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey or Keith Urban, but with Phillip Phillips singing his triple-platinum hit, "Home." It was a not-so subtle reminder that Idol produces not only results but big, bankable stars, including Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson and, of course, Phillip Phillips, the pawn-shop worker who was swept to the heights of international superstardom by the hands of Idol voters. The ingenious thing about American Idol is obvious: Every season is a fresh start. If you love a season, you're glued to your seat. If you hate a season, you're even more excited for the next. It doesn't matter whether Simon Cowell, Mariah Carey, Steven Tyler, or Kara DioGuardi's mute aunt from Sioux City is on the judging panel; the stars of this juggernaut are the contestants, and the judges are merely carnival barkers and curators who instruct us where to fix our gaze and hurl our texts.

For American Idol (TV) fans, nothing beats a concert packed with live music, psychedelic lights, and their very own Top Ten belting out the season's most popular Idol performances. This time, however, there's no judges, no tireless, never-ending commercials (except for the occasional, strategically placed plugs for Idol sponsored products), and no abbreviated songs. This year's Top Ten made Chicago their second stop in the 2012 American Idols Live! tour following an opening night in Detroit, Mi. Fresh out of rehearsals in Los Angeles, the tour is young, and the fatigue of a rigorous travel schedule and an inevitable bout or two of homesickness has not set in with it's cast. Full of excitement and anticipation, they are steadily making their way across America to meet their fans and spread some Idol love. On this occasion, three of the Idols - Colton Dixon, Joshua Ledet and Skylar Laine sat down with...

If you’re going to describe Jessica Sanchez’s American Idol journey as a rollercoaster ride, make sure there’s a “you must be this tall” sign at the entrance.
There was her introduction to the Idoloonie Nation with a legendary group performance in Las Vegas and that buzzworthy Whitney Houston cover in Top 13 Week. There was her shock elimination at No. 7 (with subsequent need for the Judges’ Save) and not one, but two stunning renditions of “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going.”

Nashville, Tenn. — Presidential elections are usually serious business, but President Barack Obama and likely Republican nominee Mitt Romney are taking a little time for laughs during the Cmt Music Awards on Wednesday.
Obama and Romney have taped video segments that will appear as part of the country music award show's opening segment. Cmt President Brian Philips said in a statement that each is "in on the joke."
"They're each great sports," he said.
The fun kicks off at 8 p.m. Edt from Nashville's Bridgestone Arena on Cmt with hosts Toby Keith and Kristen Bell. A host of celebrities from across the entertainment dial are scheduled to appear as well, but they'll be battling for attention with the focus on Obama and Romney.
Chances are Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift will take over the spotlight by the end of the evening, though. It doesn't take a statistician to sort out the...

Hollie Cavanagh fans still upset by the tough feedback she got from American Idol judges over the course of Season 11, breathe easy. The moment we have all been waiting for has arrived. After over 132 million votes, 21 year old Phil Phillips from Leesburg, Ga has been crowned the winner of American Idol Season 11. What a glorious moment this was. The finale was jam packed with surprise performances, a two hour celebration concert leading up to the big moment, the win that many may have wanted but not anticipated actually happening. That’s what makes this win so fantastic! The underdog took it home! The one contestant who made no apologies or excuses for being true to himself all season long took the win. Congratulations Phil Phillips! A win well deserved!

The "American Idol" Season 11 finale welcomed "Idol's" annual cavalcade of music stars to the stage for various performances with the Top 13 finalists. Among them were Season 3 winner Fantasia Barrino, classic rocker Neil Diamond and country superstar Reba McEntire.
Fantasy sang "Take Me to the Pilot" with Joshua Ledet, which was ... a lot of screaming. It was kind of like they were scream-fighting at each other. Not really our cup of tea, but let us know in the comments if you were super pumped about it.
Five of the male finalists sang a Neil Diamond medley that consisted of "America," "Cracklin Rosie" and "I'm a Believer," then Colton Dixon welcomed Mr. Diamond himself to the stage to sing-talk his way through "Sweet Caroline."
Finally, in one of the better Idol-sings-with-famous person performances of the night, country cutie Skylar Laine sang "Turn on the Radio" with Reba, which was actually a lot of fun.

America has voted, and Phillip Phillips is the new "American Idol!"The 21-year-old pawn shop worker from Georgia bested 16-year-old singing sensation Jessica Sanchez of California to claim the title. A record 132 million votes were cast in the finale.Phillip is the show's eleventh winner and the fifth male contestant in a row to win. His winning single, "Home," will be released this week.Phillip was consistently praised for his originality and never found himself in the bottom group. Jessica was actually the lowest vote getter among the Top 7, but got a reprieve from judges Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler.Had she won, Jessica would have been the first saved contestant to win "American Idol" and also the youngest (Jordin Sparks, "Idol's" last female winner, was 17 when she won Season 6).The two finalists will join Joshua Ledet, Hollie Cavanagh, Skylar Laine, Elise Testone, Colton Dixon, DeAndre Brackensick,...

American Idol Season 11 Winner: Announced!
The 10 castoffs open the night with "Runaway Baby" by Bruno Mars. Man, there was a whole lot of talent in this season's contestants. This is easily one of the best group numbers I've ever seen on this show and I'm almost never a fan of the group sings. I even feel like there's more choreography than we've seen in years. Dare I say it, I think this tour will be a fun one.
In Phillip Phillips' first performance of the night, he's teaming up with John Fogerty from Ccr for "Have You Ever Seen the Rain" and "Bad Moon Rising." The performances aren't spectacular,...

American Idol Finale Part 2: A Winner is Crowned
I rewatched last night's episode of American Idol, and I have to say, Phillip did better than I gave him credit for. I can say all I want that I think Jessica deserves to win, but I won't be mad if Phillip does. I'll comment more on the whole 'white guy with guitar' phenomenon later in this post, and how the show can fix itself. On to the show!
The night starts out with a group song to Bruno Mars' "Runaway Baby" (I believe that is the title, I am typing this as I watch), and it's the typical all-in-white mess we've come to expect from finale night. There's a weird, unnecessary dance break, and then it's time for the show to really start. Ryan and the judges come out, Ryan building up the show with 132 million votes cast. When Phillip and Jessica come out,...

Unlike the actual "American Idol" results show, we don't intend to keep you in suspense about the winner with two hours of filler. After 132 million votes cast last night (really, people?), the 11th winner of the juggernaut reality competition is ...
Phillip Phillips.
The White Guy With Guitar strikes again! Looks like that stereotypical streak on "American Idol" isn't being broken any time soon. Whatever else you might say about P-squared (and I fully expect you to in the comments section), the ladies seem to love him. He's got a radio-ready sound -- especially with his Mumford & Sons-esque winner's song, "Home" -- and he probably has the greatest chance of making an impact on the charts, as so many previous "American Idol" winners have failed to do.
Did he have the best vocals, an impressive range or the ability to work the stage? No. But that doesn't preclude him from being a successful artist,...

If the Phillip Phillips-vs.-Jessica Sanchez showdown of American Idol‘s eleventh season was an apples-vs-oranges kind of affair, then tonight’s season finale — featuring the inarguably terrific Top 13 12* — was a weird and occasionally wonderful smorgasbord. (*Uncle Nigel: “Jermaine Jones was just a figment of your imagination!”)
We had Season 3 champ Fantasia Barrino in a Crystal Gayle wig and, um, unfortunate spangled catsuit with side-leg cutouts (!) grabbing Joshua Ledet and turning the Nokia into a beautiful, howling messerie. When NBC’s rival singing competition The Voice returned in February, I felt like I was the only Idol fan left in America. Media outlets championed NBC’s chair-spinning competition, with its flashy format — an audition style that’s admittedly superior to Idol’s — and sass-spewing judges, Christina Aguilera, Adam Levine, and Blake Shelton. “The Voice is more relevant, more meaningful, more compelling and more entertaining right now,” said Alex Strachan of the Montreal Gazette. “After a decade, we no longer believe in the Idol factory,” wrote EW’s Mark Harris. Those barbs stung me (an American Idol junkie) personally...

Though Phillip Phillips and Jessica Sanchez will surely super-sing and hyper-emote their way through tonight's Top 2 performance show, American Idol's eleventh season has already left a trail of thoroughly professional, if not legendary performances. Fortunately, we''ve counted up the 11 that really, really ruled, and I'll tell you a secret: The top two performances on this list may be the two best in the history of the series -- aside from my darling Melinda Doolittle's "My Funny Valentine," of course. They're an astonishing pair of clips, and I hope reality competition scientists study them with microscopes and applause for decades.

It's the final countdown. On Tuesday night (May 22), Phillip Phillips and Jessica Sanchez will face off for the season 11 crown, capping a roller-coaster ride filled with soaring highs — Sanchez's "I Will Always Love You," Joshua Ledet's "To Love Somebody," Skylar Laine's "Wind Beneath My Wings," that time Steven Tyler wore Roy Lichtenstein pants — and just as many crushing lows — Heejun Han's impromptu strip show, Colton Dixon's hair, Randy Jackson's collection of pins, etc. — with the majority, of course, falling somewhere in between. If anything, this season has given us more of the same: nothing more, nothing less.
