Ok, Ok, it’s still Season 9’s Top 12 announcement night — where Katelyn Epperly, Lilly Scott, Todrick Hall and Alex Lambert got axed in favor of Paige Miles, Katie Stevens, Andrew Garcia and High-School Student Aaron Kelly — but Season 15’s Philadelphia Auditions is definitely in contention for first runner-up.
Perhaps a rip in the space-time continuum swallowed up every talented vocalist in a 100-mile radius of the City of Brotherly Love and deposited them on the side of the New Jersey Turnpike.

Like the music industry, it takes a lot for an American Idol contestant to truly impress me. Had Nigel Lythgoe tapped me as a judge, there would be far fewer unanimous standing ovations (although my girl Nicki Minaj has been keeping it real this season). Don't get me wrong, an ear-delicious vocal performance sets my hair on end, but serve something original if you want to see me rise.

Tonight’s installment of American Idol kicked off with chyrons promising “a story of innovators, a story of visionaries.” And then we jumped right into a theme that Idol has coughed up roughly 26 times over the course of 12 seasons: “Detroit: The Music of Motor City” (Aka Motown Night Plus a Random Madonna Track).

Each Friday, the Zap2it staff features five essential things we found [cool] [interesting] [useful] [hilarious] [poignant] [stupid] in the past week. Do you have your own Friday 5? Share them in the comments section below.
#1: 50 People You Wish You Knew in Real Life
All of these people are awesome and most of these pictures are hilarious, but you can really tell it's Friday by the sheer amount of tears we cried while laughing at the photo of a cross-eyed pug going down a slide. Give the whole list a peek, you won't regret it. [More at Buzzfeed.]
#2: Justin Bieber "Boyfriend" covers
Since we might've outplayed Justin Bieber's "Boyfriend" on our iTunes (who knows what the actual, astronomical play count is -- we erase it regularly so it's not too embarrassing), it's nice to throw some lovely cover versions in and mix things up. This week, we're totally digging former "American Idol" contestant Andrew Garcia's take on the tune.

There’s this weird part of the week — from Friday morning till Monday evening — when not a single major TV network airs a reality singing competition. It’s terrible, I know, but it also gives me a lot of time to ponder American Idol history. (Everyone does this in their free time, yes?) And my latest flight of Idol fancy got me mulling this question: Was Season 11′s Top 10 the strongest — top to bottom — in show history? Let’s examine:
For starters, I’d automatically rule out the five seasons with three or more Top 10 contestants who probably wouldn’t have outlasted Season 11′s No.

Reality TV judging: It’s important. I can only commit to a TV talent show if I believe there are tough, fair-minded judges keeping the circus under control. Since we’re headlong into enticing seasons of The Voice and American Idol, the time is right to reflect upon the best judges in reality TV history – the ones who boast authority, smarts, sass, and fearsomeness. Oh, and some evil too!

They came, they sang, some conquered and starting tonight we'll finally move past the audition round freakshow (which was, admittedly, less awful than in year's past) and into Hollywood Week, which only showcases the best contestants American Idol has to offer.
Adam Levine: Shame on Randy Jackson!
But with hundreds of singers taking the stage in Los Angeles, there are bound to be some broken hearts, plenty of shattered dreams and more disappointing group performances than I care to watch.
Although this batch of episodes historically serves up at least one or two amazing musical moments -- lest you forget Andrew Garcia's reworking of Straight Up from season nine!
In an attempt to predict which singers might produce similar game changing moments, lets look back at the 20 Golden Ticket getters we're most looking forward to hearing more from!

Good things come to those who wait (for 11 seasons). Indeed, it might finally be time to put an end to the annual kvetching by the Idoloonie nation that American Idol‘s audition rounds deliver too many jokesters, deludeds, and all-purpose waking nightmares — and not enough truly talented vocalists.
In the course of Wednesday night’s season premiere, we were treated to the sweet sounds of 16 Golden Ticket recipients — quite possibly a record for a two-hour episode. There was a supremely divalicious songbird who came with her own patented dance (is America ready for that jelly?); an acoustic cutie whose “Thriller” was a 1,000-lb.

"American Idol" is back in a two-night premiere event Wednesday, Jan. 18 and Thursday, Jan. 19 and we are pumped. Forget those other singing shows, we'll take our old favorite. Here are eight fun things to look forward to during the two-night premiere:
There's a kid in St. Louis who looks like an Abercrombie model and sounds like a soulful blues singer and a current artist at the same time. He takes on Sam Cooke's "Change is Gonna Come," which is no easy feat, and he slays it. His baby blues are going to be very popular.
A kid who once beat Scotty McCreery in a vocal competition sounds like a young Michael Jackson. Like, exactly like a young Mj. We're kind of sad his audition song is not "I'll Be There" or "I Want You Back." He also looks about 12 years old.

"American Idol" Season 10 has sparked a lot of romance rumors, probably more than any other season.
You had rumors of Stefano Langone having a crush on Pia Toscano and Haley Reinhart, who was rumored to be dating Casey Abrams. You also can't forget Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina, the teen golden couple.
We decided to look back at all ten seasons and single out the best couples -- romantic and bromantic -- and leave it up to you to decide which pairing is "Idol's" best. Go through our list, think long and hard and then vote in our poll -- "American Idol" "couple" edition:
Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina -- Season 10
The youngest final two ever sparked romance rumors after Lauren planted a few kisses on Scotty after he was crowned Season 10's winner. After the show, Lauren played coy, but Scotty said the two are just "really good friends.

'American Idol': Scotty and Lauren duke it out in the Nokia, on the scene for the performance finale
In seasons past, the scene outside the Nokia Theater La Live in the hour leading up to the performance finale resembled a kind of carnival of Idols past — Hey, it’s Anoop! And… that one kooky girl from Hollywood week! No, the other one! — with a general feeling of excitement and occasion stirring among the crowd waiting to get into the theater. Perhaps I’m just projecting my own indifferent indifference about the season 10 finale here (I simply don’t care about the fact that I don’t care), but yesterday’s scene was far more subdued in comparison. When I arrived outside CBS Television City for last night’s American Idol Double Elimination Results Show Spectacular, I confess I was a little surprised to see Season 9′s Katie Stevens mulling outside the main VIP door. I was far less surprised to realize that Katie — who was sporting high-waisted, billowy, silk, abstract zebra-print pants and high heels wrapped in black lace — appeared to be 19 going on Real Housewives of Orange County. There are so many ways to quantify which "American Idol" finalists are popping with voters. From the screams and elaborate signs in the IdolDome on Wednesday nights to the number of weird promotional items being offered on eBay and bootleg fan sites that pop up to encourage power-voting, "Idol" popularity is a tricky thing to measure.
One of the best new ways, though, is to track the contestants' Twitter account and see who has the most followers. After stumbling out of the gate with their social-networking efforts last year, amid worries that loose lips might ruin the show's finale, the "Idol" top 11 are back in effect on Twitter and chatting it up with their online fans, The Hollywood Reporter noted.

I defy even one of you out there to tell me that you predicted wild-eyed boy Casey Abrams would potentially go home on "Idol" on Thursday night (March 24). Haley? Sure. Naima? Maybe. Thia? Good possibility. But "sexy" beardo Abrams? No way.
The good news, I guess, is that Casey was spared (even if he looked like he was going to hurl all over the stage), so next week we have two chances at getting it right. That said, none of the experts on our panel got it right, and "Idol" blogger Mj Santilli was as shocked as anyone at the results.
"I figured Casey had a fan base ready to dial their fingers off no matter what. It's not as if his performance this week was that bad," she said. "It was merely mediocre. But he needed a very good performance Wednesday night to overcome the Nirvana misstep from last week.

If Haley Reinhart had an ounce of anxiety going into Thursday night’s American Idol results-show telecast, it must have dissipated as quickly and completely as constructive advice from Steven Tyler’s tongue by the time the first commercial break arrived. Indeed, right at the outset of the episode, stark messages blared across the screen (“No one is safe!” “Expect the unexpected!”) that all but guaranteed Haley — who’d been a bottom-three dweller for the first two weeks of the season 10 finals — wouldn’t be spending another night in the fantasy suite with her old suitor, the Silver Stool of Doom.

Last week, we awarded a handful of gold stars to "American Idol" judge Steven Tyler for commentary filled with wacky maxims and wackier metaphors (seven days on, we still don't know what he meant by "ethnic what-it-is-ness"). This week, we're forced to dole out a demerit to Jennifer Lopez, because four weeks into the voting portion of the show, the new judge still hasn't learned that — in class as in reality competitions — you need to wait your turn to talk. Over and over on Wednesday night, J. Lo interrupted her fellow judges, talking over Randy Jackson and butting in as Tyler, once again, dipped the English language in LSD.

Before we dive into this week's "American Idol" report card, we need to pause and award a special gold star to Steven Tyler, whose commentary on Wednesday night — replete with rhyming phrases, butchered metaphors and one instance of nonsensical, if oddly well-intentioned, racial profiling — keep us glued to the telly through some snooze-inducing performances. Who cares if his commendations didn't always line up with objective reality? We'd tune in any day of the week to hear the Aerosmith frontman suggest that one singer has a "sorcerer's grasp of melody" and highlight another singer's "ethnic what-it-is-ness."
Yet just as we hand out that gold star to Tyler — and plan to dole out a few more — there are far too many contestants who earned themselves some demerits on Wednesday.

"American Idol" Top 24 celebrated their achievement with a prom held at the Roosevelt in Hollywood on Friday, February 24. Twelve women and eleven men, minus Casey Abrams who was hospitalized for stomach pains, were surprised with a new Motorola Atrix 4G, along with a lapdock and multimedia HD dock, as well as one year of free wireless service from the sponsor, At&T.
The bash also attracted the attendance of celebrities as well as former "Idol" contestants. Among the stars who support the show were Dr. Drew, Antonio Sabato Jr., Ashley Argota, Lacey Schwimmer, Tyler Blackburn and Thomas Dekker. Faces from the show's past included Ace Young, Allison Iraheta, Andrew Garcia, Constantine Maroulis, Scott MacIntyre and Tim Urban.
The Top 12 men were scheduled to tape the performance for next week's episode earlier that day. Abrams, who was discharged from the hospital on Friday afternoon, managed to squeeze two rehearsals and is expected to perform as planned.

Hollywood Week continued on "American Idol" Thursday night, as the remaining 100 contestants performed solo numbers in hopes of becoming America's "next top adult contemporary star."
Historically, this is the week where the front-runners solidify their lead going into the semi-finals. Think David Archuleta's "Heaven." Think Andrew Garcia's "Straight Up." Think Matt Giraud's "Georgia on My Mind." It's also when early faves flame out spectacularly. See: Josiah Leming.
Seacrest promised "some of the most outstanding performances in our 10-year history," and for once, his overhype was nearly justified. I can't remember the last time I watched an "Idol" episode so full of singers leaving every last bit of showbiz pizazz on the stage.
Blond lip-gloss addict Haley Reinhart kicked off the show with a "God Bless the Child" that was equal parts Screaming Jay Hawkins and Betty Boop. She may have survived the group round "through the skin of [her] teeth,...

After the hellish but also incredibly delightful group round, the remaining 100 or so American Idol hopefuls must perform in front of the judges solo. This is a make-or-break event for the contestants, as a great performance could really save them for weeks to come (Andrew Garcia's acoustic "Straight Up," anyone?). Also, if they're not featured tonight, followed by a shot of J. Lo radiating approval, there's no guarantee they will get votes from "America."
Haley Reinhart is up first with her crackly but girly voice that I am starting to adore. I was expecting to be a lot more critical this season -- and I'm sure that time will come -- but for now I'm just enjoying watching all these young people who are more talented than I could ever hope to be.

Remember way back when Season 9's Alex Lambert claimed, via Twitter, to be living on the streets? Then a rep from 19 Entertainment, which has a development deal with Lambert, claimed the contrary, citing a retainer from which Lambert recieves monthly checks.
Well, Lambert, who's been tweeting away over the past month, had this to tweet about 19 Entertainment's reponse:
"19 entertainment put me on a retainer>>?"
Then, in a response to a tweet from fellow season 9-er Andrew Garcia asking what a retainer is (umm), Lambert followed up:
"$$$ dude! These guys have been telling the media they been payin me! Makin me look like im lyin! It's a shame dude!"

"American Idol" is here and Zap2it has been taking a stroll down memory lane to re-evaluate the previous nine seasons.
We're breaking it down into four categories: Best Performance, Worst Performance, Most Underrated Idol and most Overrated Idol. At the end, we will decide how the season stacks up against the rest, rating it as great, good, or not-so-good.
We've looked back at Season 1 (yay Kelly!), Season 2 (aww, Clay and Ruben!), the black hole that was Season 3, one of our favorite Top 2 in Season 4, and Soul Patrol-ed Season 5. We took a look back at beatboxin' Season 6, the David vs. David finale of Season 7 and the game-changing season of Glambert.
Now let's look at Simon's last season.
Season 9 contestants in order of elimination:
Lacey Brown
Paige Miles
Didi Benami
Andrew Garcia
Katie Stevens
Tim Urban
Siobhan Magnus
Aaron Kelly
Michael Lynche
Casey James
Crystal Bowersox
Lee DeWyze (winner)

If you’ve turned on a television since the end of the Holiday Eating Season, chances are you’ve seen Jennifer Hudson belting the message that “it’s a new dawn, a new day, a new life.” And while the newly svelte American Idol alum’s rendition of “Feeling Good” is part of a nifty ad campaign for Weight Watchers, J.Hud could just as easily be shilling for Idol itself, which returned tonight for its tenth season with new judges, a new positive outlook, and a new obsession with vocalists who were just finishing up second grade when Kelly Clarkson...

For a lot of people, the American Idol audition rounds are all about the point-and-hoot spectacle of watching deranged, deluded “singers” committing treacherous acts against the beloved songbooks of Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, and a host of other musical superstars. Yet while I’m not immune to occasionally chuckling at said catastrophes, I get far more enjoyment from the good auditions, from experiencing the sudden and unexpected chills that come from seeing a nervous, heretofore anonymous kid floor a panel of judges (and 25 million viewers) with his or her vocal prowess.

The premiere of American Idol‘s hotly anticipated/anxiety-inducing tenth season is only a day away, and like a contestant on Bridalplasty, the show will be debuting a radically different face when its veil gets lifted this Wednesday at 8/7c.
It remains to be seen whether or not all the widely reported changes will ultimately reinvigorate or eviscerate Fox’s veteran ratings juggernaut, but regardless, I’ve got a little extra advice that I think will boost the chances that 2011 will be remembered as the year Idol got its groove back. “Concentrate on the moment and just live,” declared Jennifer Lopez, looking out on a crowd of American Idol wannabes, moments after Ryan Seacrest announced the “Get Right” singer would be part of the show’s season 10 judging panel at a press conference in Los Angeles earlier today. To which I say, “Oh. No.”
Yeah, I realize you can’t judge a judge on a seven-word sound bite, but J.Lo’s new-agey, everyone-gets-a-gold-star first impression left me wondering if she understands the role she should be playing as Fox’s venerable-but-vulnerable ratings powerhouse enters the post-Simon Cowell era. The United Center in Chicago played host to American Idol (TV)'s top ten Saturday night, with a hometown boy at the helm. Winner Lee DeWyze, who hails from suburban Mt. Prospect, Il. topped the list of Season 9 finalists who sang their way through a series of individual and group performances that had Idol fans chanting for their seasonal faves. The show followed it's traditional countdown format beginning with contestant number ten and working its way up to the winner. Opening the show was Didi Benami, whose second song, "Terrified" by Katharine McPhee out-did her first, Kyler England's "Lay it on Me." Andrew Garcia, a sentimental favorite during the show's run, received a warm reception from his camp as he stylistically toyed around with Paula Abdul's "Straight Up." At number 8 was Katie Stevens who wowed the boy crowd with a black rubber-like mini-dress and stiletto black boots. The raven-haired...

American Idol winner Lee DeWyze has said that his fans will be ‘surprised’ by his debut album.
The 24 year old Illinois singer is planning the release of his record in October and told On The Red Carpet that he has been allowed an amazing amount of creative control over the album. Adding that it will be a mixture of rock and folk tracks, Lee said
“It’s so my vibe. It’s everything I’ve wanted to do, I’m writing on everything, so it’s really me, and I just can’t wait to show everybody what I’m doing,” he said.
“I think people are going to be a little surprised. Coming out of the show I think people were like, ‘Oh, he’s rock, he’s more folk’ but it’s a mixture of both.”

The "American Idol" Season 9 tour came to Los Angeles Friday, Aug. 13 and we got ourselves a ticket. Not a hard thing to do, since the concert was nowhere near sold out.
However, the Top 10 still gave an energetic show. At this point in the tour, when shows have already been canceled for lack of ticket sales, the enthusiasm is commendable.
Much like the season itself, the concert featured much stronger female performances than male ones.
Didi Benami kicked it off and it's actually kind of fortunate she went out first of the Top 10 because her "Terrified" was one of the best songs of the night. At least the concert opened strong, which would not have been the case if Andrew Garcia, Tim Urban or Aaron Kelly had hit the stage first.
Crystal Bowersox was the evening's penultimate soloist, but still manged to bring the house down. All four of her numbers -- "What's Up,...

If the top 10 contestants on this year's "American Idol" had anything to do with it, Harry Connick Jr. would be the man to take Simon Cowell's place next season.
Or three of the top 10, anyway. Parade magazine asked the 10 stars of the current "Idol" tour for their opinions on who should replace Simon, and Connick -- the mentor for the top five during Frank Sinatra week -- got the most votes. "Most" in this case, however, means three: Michael Lynche, Katie Stevens and Aaron Kelly say Connick would be the best choice.
The other most-talked-about possible replacement, Bret Michaels, won the endorsement of two finalists -- Casey James, who performed with Michaels on the season finale, and Crystal Bowersox. She also wonders, though, if "maybe they could bring Paula [Abdul] back."

And also to see all of the top 10 Idols perform for the "Good Morning America" Summer Concert Series on Friday (July 9).
Crystal was the first one to perform, singing Janis Joplin's "Piece of My Heart" while strumming her guitar, of course. She did the song justice despite the slight spray of rain.

American Idol stars Michael Lynche and Andrew Garcia have confirmed that they have started work on their debut albums. The pair, who are currently preparing for the Idol tour across America, told Hollyscoop that they will be using the opportunity to work on their respective releases. "As much as you are doing work someone else is doing work so you can't never sleep. We go out but we have that mentality where we are non-stop working." Lynche admitted that he is excited to spend the following few months writing material. "The tour is going to be an amazing time to get your skills right, get your songs right and we are all together. Perhaps it's because he's saving all of them for his upcoming album, which DeWyze told TV Squad that he's already started writing. Either way, the former paint salesman from Chicago, who came from behind to beat frontrunner Crystal Bowersox with his raw vocals and shy-guy-with-a-guitar appeal, woke up early (sorry, Lee!) to chat with TV Squad about his about his upcoming album's rock sound, meeting season 8 winner Kris Allen, his "bromance" with fellow Idol Andrew Garcia and shucking the "no confidence" portrayal of him this season.
Still, there were a few subjects DeWyze in which decided to remain mum on. (Darn those mysterious musicians!) Find out more after the jump.
