What would you do if you were trapped in a cage deep into the ocean, surrounded by a handful of great white sharks? It’s a terrifying prospect, and ever since Jaws hit theaters back in the ‘70s, moviegoers have been fascinating with the danger surrounding sharks.
In the film 47 Meters Down, we see two women get trapped in such a circumstance. Will they stay calm, collected, and find a way out of this mess, or will they succumb to the forces of the sea? That remains to be seen.
Recently, Lrm had the opportunity to attend a press junket, and while there, we had the opportunity to attend a roundtable with several other outlets, and speak with co-stars of the film Matthew Modine and Yani Gellman, who play the characters Captain Taylor and Louis, respectively. In my continuing saga of giving praise to movies that use music perfectly, today we’re going with “Lunatic Fringe” by Red Rider used in the movie Vision Quest. P.S. the song “Only the Young” by Journey is also incredibly well used in this movie but let’s get back to the 1981 classic rock song “Lunatic Fringe.” For those of you who have seen Vision Quest then you know what I’m talking about. For those of you who haven’t, leave the room right now and go watch Vision Quest. It’s one of my favorite movies of all-time and it’ll always be.

If you watch WWE programming with any regularity then you know they’re really pushing the “Lunatic Fringe” nickname for Dean Ambrose. It seems like Michael Cole says it way too much because WWE really wants the audience to get used to it. While Ambrose has earned the respect of fans for being a great talent, the nickname is definitely different than what we’re used to.
What’s a Lunatic Fringe and why is Ambrose using it as a nickname? Thankfully, I received an email earlier today from a reader named Ryan that provided us with some info on it.
“Here’s some background info on Dean’s nickname ‘Lunatic Fringe’ name. I would assume he had a hand in coming up with it and it would seem to be paying homage to his home town Cincinnati, Ohio where the main rock station in town since 1980 has...

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is just about to hit in stores, and I’ve got a copy of the Blu-Ray Combo Pack for you. The Ben Stiller vehicle didn’t have quite as much impact on theaters as I expected, but I’m hoping it gets a new lease on life with the home release.
That might be a little surprising (catch our podcast review, and my Answers.com review) considering that I haven’t exactly championed the film whole-heartedly, but I wasn’t exactly opposed to it either. It’s a fun ride, that had a few rough spots, and didn’t exactly play out the way I’d have liked. In the end, I think it’s a lot better than most are probably giving it credit for, and it has a few scenes that really shouldn’t be missed.

Every once in a while, an actor will come on the scene with impact, impressing everyone with a powerhouse debut performance. But sometimes a great freshmen performance fails to lead to a good follow up, and the person who made the impressive debut starts to fade from the scene. It’s always sad when such potential is unmet. Here are 10 actors who started with a bang but faded with a whimper.
Heather Donahue (The Blair Witch Project-1999) She came on the scene in a big way, starring in the low-budget hit film that became such a sensation and started the ‘hand-held-camera’ style of film making (Used in Paranormal Activity, Cloverfield and others). She seemed poised to be the new Jamie Lee Curtis, the horror film “it girl”. She got a lot of offers to do other horror films but turned them down, in order to prevent type casting. Since then,...

Slip on your Snuggie and dust off your favorite holiday films, 'cause Christmas is creeping up on us– and as always, it brings with it plenty of "veg-out" time. To celebrate the upcoming stay-cation in front of the TV, here are 10 of our favorite Christmas-movie moments no holiday season should be without. 1. “You’ll Shoot Your Eye Out, Kid.” (A Christmas Story) That mall Santa’s the worst. So is that slide. Ralphie’s Christmas wish – a Red Rider Bb gun – is met with a boot to the face and a trip down into a fluffy cotton pit of despair. Of all the memorable moments to be found in this holiday staple, this one tops the list. 2. “Every Time a Bell Rings…” (It’s a Wonderful Life) Frank...

Sometime around fifteen years ago, A Christmas Story was something of a modern cult classic. It was kind of amusing and kind of off-beat, and you could make a connection with someone if you mentioned it and it turned out you both liked it. Or, at least, that’s how it was where I grew up, which was the area of Northwest Indiana where the story was set. A funny thing happened in the late ’90s, though. TNT started playing the movie on cable for 24 hours straight during Christmas, the concept caught on, and now, thirteen years later, you would be hard-pressed to find someone who doesn’t know about Ralphie, his Red Rider Bb gun, and Scut Farkus. But another funny thing happened, too. After so many years of repetition, the movie has started to feel a whole lot less quirky and fun. At this point, it’s probably the most overrated holiday movie ever, and...

The seventh annual Montreal Underground Film Festival features four nights — and one matinee — of experimental short films from all over the world, plus two feature films. The fun takes place May 17-20 with the opening night event being held at Sala Rossa before the rest of the fest moves to Peut-être Vintage.
The opening batch of short films includes Winnipeg filmmaker Aaron Zeghers‘ The Story of Thomas Edison, plus films by fellow Winnipegger Scott Fitzpatrick, Simon Lacroix, Erin Weisgerber, Charles Fairbanks and many more.
Several other Winnipeggers have films throughout the rest of the fest, including Heidi Phillips‘ The Last Harvest and Noam Gonick’s Hirsch. Representing the U.S. are Neil Ira Needleman‘s Prelude & Erotiloop, Tony Gault‘s Ghost of Yesterday and Ben Popp‘s Lazslo Lassu.

Welcome to a brand spanking new weekly column here on The Liberal Dead. What you’ll find on It Came From 1980 X is the finest (you know the Colt 45 variety) in films from the VHS era that may or may not have made it to DVD and may or may not be worth a watch. It’s time to unwrap the magnetic tape from the heads of our Vcr’s and open our eyes the way the once were. You can consider this your virtual Mom and Pop video store. That doesn’t mean we sell or rent tapes by any means. Unfortunately there’s just no way to make renting our beloved medium of choice possible for us at this time without losing our entire stock to the private collections of you super creepies. Instead we’ll recommend the movies, and you’ll be responsible for salvaging them...

You know Kenny, super competitor on MTV’s ‘The Challenge,’ or what some of you may more recognize as its original name ‘Real World/Road Rules Challenge.’ But we know some juicy stuff you might not!
Kenny Santucci entered the MTV reality realm as a piece of ”fresh meat” on the 12th season of Real World/Road Rules Challenge, where he was partnered up with an alumnus of Road Rules. He is also the host of Jersey Shore: Hook-Up, a series released on MTV.com after certain episodes. HollywoodLife.com talked to Kenny to find out what MTV fans don’t already know. He’s a pretty confident guy with a sense of humor and a sensitive side — sounds like a winner, right? Here’s what every Kenny fan should know.
He’s a superhero fanatic: “I’m Batman’s biggest fan… I’m obsessed with Batman and have a huge collection of Batman figurines.

Bad Santa: When I was a wee lad, I spent one Christmas Eve staying up as late as possible staring at the roofs of the row homes across the street, trying to see that fat sumbitch who visited all the goyim homes but wouldn't give this little Jew boy some holiday cheer. Needless to say, I saw no Santa Claus. But had I, I suspect that -- because this was Philly -- he would've been an awful lot like Billy Bob Thorton's Willie T. Stokes -- a rude, vulgar, thieving, lecherous, drunken Santa. That's my kind of Santa, and that's why Bad Santa is my kind of Christmas flick.

Activision and the "Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock" team paced themselves publicizing the full set list of more than 90 tracks that's slated to appear in the game, but they've put it all out there as of this week, and before you even make it to Soundgarden's full "Telephantasm" album that's coming bundled in the first shipment of units, you'll have a long list of core game tunes to thrash through including The Hives' "Tick Tick Boom" and multiple Megadeth and Rush numbers.
"We engaged our fans to find out what they really wanted and then hand-picked over 90 tracks that deliver the ultimate rock experience," Guitar Hero vice president of music affairs Tim Riley said in a press release. "From the new guitar controller to the gameplay to the on-disc set list, 'Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock' is truly a return to rock."

The Us Toy Fair is an insane rush of interviews and images of Thousands of the newest toys hitting our happy shores, most of which we can shoot pictures of so you, at home, can drool to your heart's content and plant printed pictures around the house like a young Ralphie hinting at his lust for a Red Rider Bb gun. But some, no matter how much we beg, we cannot photograph, most often due to approvals needed by a licensor.

We've had some time to get used to the truly terrible idea of a 3D Stretch Armstrong flick with Taylor (Team Jacob) Lautner as the flexible hero in question. But on the upside, at least now I can hold out hope that maybe if Lautner's busy getting all bendy, he won't have time to ruin the memory of Louden Swain in a remake of the sports/teen drama Vision Quest -- which brings me to today's Scenes (Songs) We Love, and while most people focus on Madonna's Crazy for You as the musical highlight of the flick, I thought I would offer up a pretty viable alternative: Lunatic Fringe from Red Rider.
Vision Quest was based on the novel by Terry Davis and centered on a high-school wrestler (played by Matthew Modine) who decides to take on the top dog in a fight to do something meaningful with his...

I can’t remember ever wanting anything for Christmas as a kid anything as much as Ralphie wants that Red Rider Bb gun. But I love seeing him get it, year after year. Looks like TBS will be engaging in its new annual tradition of running the film for 24 straight hours, starting on Christmas Eve at 8pm Eastern. Ho. Ho. Ho. A Christmas Story is available on DVD in Region 1; it’s apparently out of print in Region 2, but used copies are available. My review of the film is here.

“If adventure has a name, it must be Indiana Jones.” That’s a sentiment I can readily agree with—Indy is one of my favorite “fictional” characters (up there with Doc Savage, The Shadow, Conan the Barbarian, Tarzan, Sherlock Holmes, John Carter of Mars, Captain America, the Fantastic Four, Batman, James Bond and too many others to list). But, you know, although Starlog gave covers to all four Indy films (as well as TV’s The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles), we never ventured into Indy action for a licensed magazine. I know only part of the reasons why.
Raiders Of The Lost Ark (1981) is one of my favorite films—and, I think, one of the five best adventure movies ever made (the others in chronological order: The Adventures Of Robin Hood, Disney’s 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, The Guns Of Navarone, Where Eagles Dare).
