Former Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli has shared her thoughts on Novak Djokovic's upsetting experience with anti-doping officials at the 2023 Davis Cup Finals.
Djokovic was required to undergo blood and urine tests before his singles match against Cameron Norrie on November 23, in the quarterfinal of the Davis Cup. The decision clearly upset Djokovic, who was in the middle of his pre-match routine, some 90 minutes before he went to the court.
Djokovic did not "refuse" to provide the requested samples contrary to some outlandish reporting by journalists, and cooperated to do so after the match. The Itia clarified this in a statement reported by L'Equipe, saying that the Serb followed all protocols and never refused to do the tests.

This year's Roland Garros saw plenty of players fall out with the Parisian crowd, but none had it worse than Taylor Fritz.
Taylor Fritz was playing against a native French player, Arthur Rinderknech, at Roland Garros, and he was not facing only the player but also the crowd. The crowd heavily backed their compatriot, which wasn't a problem, but Fritz grew quite tired of it over time.
The booing was present for much of the match but exploded in intensity when Fritz finished off the match and silenced the crowd. The crowd was so tilted that they kept booing for several minutes as Marion Bartoli tried to interview Fritz post-match, which were scenes we hadn't seen before.
It became this huge talking point, as the Tournament Director also called it too much. He was also booed in the next match, but that was a losing effort, so he didn't have to endure for too long.

Marion Bartoli has always been a huge fan of Novak Djokovic, and she called him the greatest tennis player of all time, but also the best sportsman.
Former player Marion Bartoli most probably counts herself among the Djokovic fans. She had the chance to watch Djokovic during his peak days while she played on the Tour but also now as an analyst, which certainly allowed her to see things in more depth.
Nobody really expected Djokovic to stay as dominant as he's been over these past ten years, but here we are at the end of yet another dominant season. He won three of the four Grand Slams played this year and lost in the final of the fourth.
He'll finish the year as number one on the Atp Tour after winning the Atp Finals, an event where he only lost to Jannik Sinner in the round-robin stage. It's simply been an amazing year,...

Former Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli believes Carlos Alcaraz and fellow Next Gen star Holger Rune have demanding playing styles that may not be sustainable for the body for a long time.
In an exclusive interview with Tennis Majors , Bartoli singled out Novak Djokovic who embodies all the qualities of a perfect athlete as he does what he needs to almost effortlessly while on the court. Even at 36, the former Wta star is not surprised to see Djokovic remain at the top of his game.
Alcaraz and Rune have risen through the ranks at lightning speed . The Spaniard, in particular, has enjoyed a meteoric rise to stardom. Alcaraz became the first man born after 1990 to hold onto two Grand Slams when he won Wimbledon in July . He is also the youngest Atp year-end No. 1 in history.

Carlos Alcaraz was expected to take a step forward in 2023, and while he did, Novak Djokovic still put together a more impressive season, according to former player Marion Bartoli.
Bartoli has been a very strong supporter of Djokovic for many years, rightfully propping up his greatness. She's as big of a fan as ever in 2023, especially after the Serbian put together another very impressive season.
Winning three of the four Grand Slams is almost ideal for Djokovic, especially as many expected Carlos Alcaraz to make a huge step forward this year. Beating Djokovic at Wimbledon certainly is a huge step forward, but he kind of disappointed at the other Grand Slams.
In a recent interview with Tennis Majors , Bartoli laid out why Djokovic's season is far more impressive than Alcaraz's, even if he took a minor step forward this year.

Coco Gauff is a Grand Slam champion and is now only missing being number one on the Wta Tour, which will come, according to former player Marion Bartoli.
Coco Gauff has now done the same thing Marion Bartoli did in her career; she's won one Grand Slam but is yet to become world number one in singles. Gauff did it a while ago in doubles , but it's not the one she's after, and according to Bartoli, who spoke to Tennis Majors, she'll get it eventually.
The talent for it was always there, but it will take some maturation from the American who showed a great deal of maturity at the US Open. The final wasn't the best final, as both players certainly could have done better , but she problem-solved on the spot, and that's what Bartoli took away from it. It's just the ability to adapt and squeeze out a win.

Novak Djokovic might not be the most popular player in the world, but he would be, according to Marion Bartoli, if he weren't Serbian.
Some markets are bigger while others are smaller, and while the United States can offer a huge market and popularity, Serbia can't do the same thing, and Novak Djokovic knows that very well. He even admitted that his nationality likely held him back in his career.
Former player Marion Bartoli agrees with that, as she explained in a recent interview with Rmc . She speculated that if Djokovic were American, he'd have far more recognition in the world. The United States is a much larger country and market that obviously changes things.
Of course it’s not just the fact that he is Serbian. We know very well that if Novak was American, he'd have a statue in every city. The fact that he is Serbian means...

Marion Bartoli recognised Coco Gauff 's ability to keep her composure and show so much maturity for someone still young after Gauff won her maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open .
Perhaps Gauff escaping through a challenging first round against Laura Siegemund very much set the tone for the rest of the event. Emma Raducanu had won the 2021 US Open title, where it felt like everything had fallen into place and moved so smoothly.
However, this was contrasting in the way that it felt like Gauff really needed to earn most of her matches and sometimes come through without playing her best tennis. That was the case in the final win against Aryna Sabalenka, too .
Marion Bartoli was watching courtside during the entire tournament and she talked through the shortcomings of the first set before Gauff eventually bounced back.

At this point, we can confidently say, that Elena Rybakina 's coach Stefano Vukov is a man who doesn't shy from the spotlight.
The controversial Croatian coach was once again under bright headlights as his uncanny on-court behavior provoked the ire of tennis fans on social media. During a third-round match at the 2023 US Open between Rybakina and Sorana Cirstea, Vukov was chatty and gallurous as she passed instructions to his charge.
Even Portuguese journalist Jose Morgado couldn't help but notice Vukov being chatty not just on Rybakina's but also during Cirstea's serve. He became more problem generator than a problem solver, as Rybakina was under the cosh for most of the match.
Rybakina did commendable work to fight back from a first-set deficit, winning a closely-contested second set in a tiebreak. In the decider, momentum swayed Cirstea's way as the Romanian built a 5-3 lead. But despite Rybakina foiling...

Novak Djokovic never enjoyed the popularity of his fellow Big Three members Rafael Nadal and Djokovic and former player Marion Bartoli shared her thoughts on why that might be.
It's a rather well-known fact that Novak Djokovic is not the most popular tennis player on the Atp Tour. While respected mainly among his peers, fan support has been somewhat spotty . It affected him greatly earlier on in his career, but lately, he's mostly used as fuel while continuing to make history.
In fairness, the Serbian didn't really help himself by being unapologetically himself and never compromising on his views and stances.
It was something completely different from what we saw before. This starkly contrasts Nadal and Federer, who have largely avoided controversy and kept their personal views to themselves. Even so, former player Bartoli thinks much of that popularity difference is due to timing.
It was more the timing than anything.

It's rare to see Elena Rybakina lose her temper on a tennis court, but the 2022 Wimbledon champion's relationship with coach Stefano Vukov might have hit its boiling point.
Rybakina was involved in a seemingly tough match against Latvia's Jelena Ostapenko in the second round of the Cincinnati Masters and had just dropped the first set tiebreak from 6-3 up as her opponent reeled off five straight set points.
Midway through the second set, Rybakina's Croatian coach Vukov appeared to shout some instructions while sitting in the player's box courtside after his charge hammered a fifth double fault in the match. But that didn't sit too well with the ice-cold Kazakhstani player, who hit back at her coach, repeating her response twice.
"If I need something, I'll ask."

Elina Svitolina lost in her first grass-court match as a mother, when she was dominated by Linda Fruhvirtova at the 2023 Birmingham Classic .
Facing prodigies is never easy and the 18-year-old Czech is certainly one. Along with her sister Brenda, they were called the future of tennis by Marion Bartoli , and already as a teenager, Fruhvirtova has some big wins behind her belt.
On the other hand, Svitolina is coming back from a one-year break after pregnancy. However, her initial comeback was sensational. She won the title in Strasbourg and followed by an impressive performance in Paris, reaching the Roland Garros quarterfinals .
However, the Ukrainian wasn't able to follow up on her good clay-court season also on the grass as she met Fruhvirtova for the first time on the Wta Tour. The Czech teenager was on a four-match losing streak, but she was determined to change that with a change of surface.

Taylor Fritz 's 2023 Roland Garros journey bore the seeds of an emotional saga rather than a regular tennis tournament narrative.
A decidedly charged encounter was the backdrop to Fritz's match against French player Arthur Rinderknech on Court Suzanne-Lenglen. The evening air was thick with anticipation, as the home crowd ardently backed their national hero, casting Fritz in the role of a perceived villain for the night.
Despite the vociferous roars and rallying cries, Fritz stayed resolute. His mission was clear: to secure his place in the third round of the French Open and silence the rampant crowd. And in a riveting match, he emerged victorious. But the true spectacle was just beginning to unfold.
His celebration in the face of adversity—pointing at his mouth, asking the crowd for silence, even ironically blowing kisses—did not sit well with the audience. What started as enthusiastic cheering for their home-grown player...

This surface is the one where he could still best probably the overwhelming majority of tennis players and it's mainly due to his experience. Grass has a learning curve and the more you play on it the better you are. There are only a few players on the Atp Tour who played more matches on the surface as Murray did, and that's an advantage for him.
It started for him in Surbiton this week but the clear goal is Wimbledon. It's an event where he could go to the second week and that's a goal for him. It also means that he needs to pick and choose his spots like he did when he gave up on Roland Garros for an early start on grass. Ahead of his return to grass courts,...

Taylor Fritz stole the show on Thursday at the 2023 Roland Garros after he eliminated Arthur Rinderknech.
But it wasn't about beating the Frenchman but all about the atmosphere. The French crowd tried to help their player and the American didn't appreciate that. After the match, he attempted to silence the crowd, but the opposite happened.
The Parisian crowd started booing Fritz, but it wasn't regular boos. The French crowd started booing and seemingly never stopped. They booed even when Marion Bartoli attempted to do an interview and made it impossible for it to be held.

"The crowd was just so great that I had to let it fire me up.

Taylor Fritz experienced what it feels like to face the home crowd at the 2023 Roland Garros after his second-round win.
As the players entered the Court Suzanne-Lenglen for the last match of the Thursday's session, one thing was clear and that was that if France wants to have their player in the third round of the Atp draw, Arthur Rinderknech needs to beat the highest-ranked American.
And the French crowd did their best to support their player, but there was one man that had different goal in that match. The man was obviously Taylor Fritz, who came to win and advance to the third round of the 2023 Roland Garros.
But the French player and the French crowd were happier after the first set as Rinderknech managed to win it 6-2. Yet, an amazing comeback from Fritz followed as the ninth seed won the match 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4.

Even Djokovic would put him ahead of himself but he's certainly not the only one. Alex Corretja sees him as the favourite, as do his Eurosport colleagues Tim Henman and Barbara Schett. Even so, for Marion Bartoli, he's not the overwhelming favourite because there are other contenders as well.
Alcaraz is one of the favorites but he's not the overwhelming favorite. No, I don't think so. There is not one player who stands out in the pack.

Emma Raducanu is not playing tennis right now due to her injuries but former player Marion Bartoli is sure of her successful return.
Emma Raducanu underwent triple surgery recently to fix issues in both wrists and her ankle. Those injuries plagued her for a while but the overwhelming sentiment is that she'll be able to overcome them with a focused effort.
Former player Marion Bartoli certainly believes that as well because the key to any good tennis career is to stay healthy. Raducanu has had a lot of injuries since she was able to win the US Open with a spectacular run over a year ago.
First of all, she needs to focus on staying healthy because if you look at her last 18 months since winning the US Open title the amount of injuries she has carried is enormous. She hasn't been able to play a full schedule. The physicality...

Rafael Nadal is in contention to win the 2023 French Open, despite his recent injuries, Marion Bartoli said.
Questions marks have been raised about whether Nadal will be able to mount a title defence at Roland-Garros this season as the 36-year-old continues to struggle with an injury. Although, recent admissions from Nadal's coach, Carols Moya, and the 22-time Grand Slam winner's uncle Toni, suggest that he will be fit enough to play in Paris.
Furthermore, several players, including Nadal's compatriot and world number two Carlos Alcaraz, have warned about ruling the 36-year-old out of a return at the French Open. When speaking to the Super Moscato Show, former Wimbledon champion Bartoli agreed that Nadal shouldn't be discounted from the French Open this season.

As the debate rages on about whether Novak Djokovic or Carlos Alcaraz is currently the best men's player in the world, former Wimbledon winner Marion Bartoli has given her verdict.
Djokovic lifted his 22nd career Grand Slam title with victory at the 2023 Australian Open in January. Meanwhile, Alcaraz has won Indian Wells, and the Argentina Open and reached the Rio Open final so far in 2023.
As the two players continue to battle for the Atp world number one spot, arguments about who the current best men's player continue. But, when speaking to the Tennis Majors Match Points publication, Bartoli felt there is only one true great at present.
"It’s very simple – it’s Novak Djokovic [who is the true world No 1]."
Marion Bartoli said to Match Points
Despite her clear admission in favour of Djokovic, Bartoli admitted that Alcaraz is a talent to watch for the future following his sensational results in 2022 and 2023.

John Inverdale has been replaced by Clare Balding as the host of this year's Wimbledon highlights show on BBC Two.
Balding will now host the revamped show Wimbledon 2Day, as announced by the BBC yesterday (June 9).
The move occurs two years after Inverdale received complaints for making sexist comments about 2013 champion Marion Bartoli. Nearly 700 people complained after he said that she was "never going to be a looker".
Inverdale - who was also replaced by Balding on BBC Radio 5 Live last year - will remain as a commentator at the corporation.

Clare Balding is to replace John Inverdale for this year's Wimbledon coverage on BBC Radio.
Inverdale will continue to host BBC Two's daily highlights coverage on Today at Wimbledon.
"We have a wide team of talent that work across TV and radio at Wimbledon and John is very much a part of this again this year," said a spokeswoman for the BBC.
They added: "Clare Balding reprises her presenting role on Radio 5 live, which she has done before. Due to other commitments Clare was not part of the Wimbledon team last year."
Last year, Inverdale was criticised for his comments on air regarding Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli, in which he said she was "never going to be a looker".
Earlier this week, Inverdale said of his remarks: "I was feeling so ill that day, I had terrible hay fever and all I could think of was that I wanted to go home to bed.

A month-by-month rundown of 2013's most outrageous examples of sexism: from Seth Macfarlane's Oscar song to Kate Middleton's 'baby weight'
January
Good old Georg Baselitz kicked off the year in spectacular sexist style with the confident declaration: "Women don't paint very well. It's a fact." As it turned out, he was just the first in a long line of prominent men to confuse "prejudiced opinion" with "fact" over the course of the year – an easy mistake to make. Meanwhile, the New York Post took it upon itself to set the tone for a year of misogynistic media with a front-page picture of Hillary Clinton mid-passionate speech, with the headline: "No wonder Bill's afraid". This would have been brilliantly original were it not for the well-trodden path of decades of similar pieces attempting to discredit female politicians as shrill harpies. Yawn.

Culture secretary Maria Miller has demanded that the BBC take further action over the sexism in its coverage of Wimbledon.
Commentator John Inverdale attracted hundreds of complaints for suggesting that winner Marion Bartoli may have been told that she "was never going to be a looker" so had to be "scrappy and fight" to win.
> Marion Bartoli on John Inverdale 'sexist' remark: 'Not my main priority'
> Wimbledon coverage: Does the BBC need to up its game?
Miller wrote to director general Tony Hall calling for further action in addition to positive steps to prevent a recurrence, The Guardian reports.
"It is therefore a matter of some concern to me that any comment on the looks and stature of a female athlete could be made in the context of one of the UK's, and indeed the world's, sporting calendar," she wrote in last week's letter.

At the London 2012 Olympics, the BBC was rightly saluted for managing to match the incredible sporting achievements from the athletes with its own imperious and groundbreaking coverage of every hop, skip and jump.
The broadcaster brought us every single golden moment, didn't fluff any of its lines, and allowed its best presenter talent to react with emotion and sensitivity to each occasion.
Andy Murray's victory at Wimbledon on Sunday afternoon was another incredible British sporting moment. As he served for the final game, the TV ratings were astronomical, and that doesn't even take into account the thousands in pubs and parks across the country.
However, unlike Murray's perfect forehand and unbeatable backhand, the BBC's Wimbledon coverage felt shaky.
John Inverdale's blundering remarks about Marion Bartoli on Radio 5 Live were the biggest crime, but the heat directed at the commentator has actually distracted attention away from the cracks elsewhere in the BBC presentation.

The Frenchie did it! Another exciting Wimbledon tournament came to an end on July 6 when Marion cruised to a finals victory over Sabine Lisicki.
We knew going into the women’s Wimbledon final that we’d be seeing a first-time champion, it was just a question of who. Marion Bartoli made it clear very early who the champion would be, easily overpowering her opponent Sabine Lisicki in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4.
Marion Bartoli Defeats Sabine Lisicki At Wimbledon
It was a truly impressive showing for Marion, who was playing in her first Wimbledon final since losing to Venus Williams in 2007. In an unpredictable year where all the heavy-hitters dropped like flies during the iconic tournament, Marion was the constant. She displayed pure grit and strength on her run to the championship, and she didn’t let up in the final.

Tennis champ Andy Roddick has announced that he plans to retire following the 2012 U.S. Open, so every match he plays at the tournament could potentially be his last as a professional player. But Roddick's career won't end on Tuesday, Sept. 4, as his match against Juan Martin del Potro was rained out and will continue on Wednesday.
According to Espn, Roddick was in the lead after a tiebreaker in his first set when the rain at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens became so disruptive that officials delayed the match. He'll ideally pick up the game on Wednesday, Sept. 5, although rain is in the forecast again so who knows if the weather will cooperate.
The Roddick/del Potro match wasn't the only one hit with a rain delay -- Maria Sharapova and Marion Bartoli will resume their game on Wednesday as well.

Princess Beatrice and her boyfriend, Dave Clark, sat front row during the Wimbledon quarter-finals in London today. They checked out the match between Sabine Lisicki and Marion Bartoli, which ended with Sabine taking the win. Luckily the game took place under the roof of the Center Court stadium since thunderstorms and rain caused delays for other duos. The couple just returned from a trip to Cap d'Antibes where Princess Beatrice wore a bikini and Dave Clark went shirtless. Beatrice has been on the go all month, attending the Epsom Derby alongside Kate Middleton and Prince William and also checking out opening day of the Ascot Racecourse with her sister, Eugenie. New York -- Wimbledon final ratings this year? A smash.
Sunday's daylong battle between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal gave NBC its best overnight ratings for a gentlemen's final in eight years, and the best non-u.S. final ratings since 1991.
"Breakfast at Wimbledon" on Sunday averaged a 4.6 overnight household rating/12 share between 9 a.m. and 4:45 p.m. Et, Nielsen Media Research said. The match, delayed by rain for more than two hours, was won in epic fashion by Nadal. Nadal took home his first Wimbledon title as well as kept Federer from winning his sixth title.
NBC Sports President Ken Schanzer said Monday that the network lost some of its audience during the rain delay but that it was only temporary.
"The entire audience came back once they (Federer and Nadal) got back on the court. It was almost like a three-act play," Schanzer said. "The first act was Nadal. The second act was Federer. The third act was the denounement, the resolution. The drama just kept building."
It was the best overnight rating for a men's final since 2000's Pete Sampras-Patrick Rafter (5.0/14), and up 44% compared with last year's Federer-Nadal match (3.2/9) that Federer won. The peak was 6.5/15 between 4-4:30 p.m. It also was the best overnight men's Wimbledon final since Boris Becker-Michael Stich in 1991, a 5.0/17.
And it also gives NBC the thought that there could be high-rated rematches in the future, and not just at Wimbledon.
"There is an emerging rivalry in tennis, Nadal-Federer, and big audiences tend to be driven by stars and rivalries," Schanzer said. "It's great to have a star, it's even better to have a star and a rival. This rivalry has engaged and I felt that before the match, so frankly what was needed was a great match and it was everything we could have imagined."
Sunday's performance follows Saturday's Serena Williams-Venus Williams final that drew the best overnight rating for a Wimbledon women's final in three years. The match, won by Venus in straight sets, posted a 3.4 rating/10 share, a 21% increase over last year's final between Venus Williams and Marion Bartoli, also won by Williams. It peaked toward the end with a 5.1/15.
It was the highest since the 4.0/12 posted by the 2005 by another final between two Americans, Venus Williams and Lindsay Davenport.
"It's hard to imagine that it could have been a better weekend," Schanzer said.
