Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston to star as the blacklisted screenwriter; Helen Mirren to play legendary gossip columnist Hedda Hopper.
Entertainment One has prevailed in the hotly contested bid to secure international rights to buzzed-about biopic Trumbo, about blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo.
Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston takes the leading role and Helen Mirren has signed on to play his nemesis, Hedda Hopper.
eOne will distribute in the UK, Canada and Australia/New Zealand.
Based on a true story, charismatic screenwriter Dalton Trumbo was the highest paid screenwriter in the world in the 1930s. However, as Cold War paranoia took hold of the Us, he was dragged in front of the House Committee on Un-American Activities (Huac), and, when he refused to co-operate, was ultimately sent to prison.
Remaining rebellious after his release, Trumbo became Hollywood’s most prolific blacklisted writer, secretly writing such classics as Roman Holiday and winning two Academy Awards under an alias. Helping...

Update, 3:16 Pm: Magnolia Pictures has confirmed news that Deadline broke yesterday: It has acquired North American rights to Frank, starring Michael Fassbender. Read the full release below the original story. Previous Exclusive, Thursday Am: Magnolia is zeroing in on a low seven-figure domestic deal for Frank, the Lenny Abrahamson-directed film about a band that is led by an eclectic genius lead singer who, everywhere he goes, wears an oversized head, even on stage. Now, this has been one of the most intriguing titles, given that the actor playing him is Michael Fassbender, the hunky Irishman who was just Oscar-nominated for his role in 12 Years A Slave. The film also stars Maggie Gyllenhaal, Scoot McNairy and Domhnall Gleeson and the vantage point is a fledgling musician who joins the band. The film is repped by Wme Global, and while the deal flow has been a bit on the slow side,...

2Nd Update: IFC has finally confirmed this deal. Here’s the release, at the bottom of Deadline’s break on the deal. Update, 3:35 Am: It was easier for Deadline to splash an exclusive about the Ain’t Them Bodies Saints deal last night than it was for Sundance dealmakers to paper it. But Cassian Elwes and Wme Global’s Graham Taylor and Alexis Garcia finally closed with IFC Films‘ Arianna Bocco at 3 Am Los Angeles time, for a bit more than $1 million for U.S. rights. That means the reps will hold a mini-auction for Canadian rights — after they take a nap. I heard this morning from Elwes, who said Saints will benefit from a multi-platform strategy that the dealmaker/producer road-tested with Margin Call, and which he feels is a major reason the indie market is reinvigorated. On this deal, Elwes had his original flight canceled and had...

Just when we thought we were done with the 2012 American Film Market, some more distribution news has come in: The Weinstein Company has picked up English-language rights to the thriller Snow Piercer from South Korea’s Cj Entertainment.
Per Deadline, the deal for the multiple territory acquisition of the future-set film was in seven figures. TWC will distribute Snow Piercer in North America, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa.
The English-language directorial debut of Boon Joon-ho (The Host), the film stars The Avengers’ Chris Evans, The Help’s Octavia Spencer, Jamie Bell, John Hurt, Alison Pill, Tilda Swinton, and Song Kang-ho. Based on the graphic novel Le Transperceneige, Snow Piercer is set in the not too distant future, where a new Ice Age has wiped out most of the human race. With a revolt brewing onboard, the Snow Piercer is a train of Earth’s lone survivors that travels around the cold world.
