"Paranormal State" was a reality show on A&E that followed a group of paranormal investigators called the Paranormal Research Society, founded by Ryan Buell, 31, when he was a 19-year-old Penn State student.
The show aired its last episode in May 2011 and then a year later, Buell revealed he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He now opens up to People about his battle with cancer and what it was liking coming to terms with his own mortality.
"At times, I was experiencing almost like a traffic jam in my body and my kidneys would shut down or I'd be in insane, intense abdominal pain, like I was being stabbed to death," says Buell. "I was throwing up constantly, suffering fever, changing of the skin. It took some time to get things under control."
"I had a friend who came [to see me]. An older gentleman, Charles, who was in his early 60s...

Having starred on A&E's Paranormal State, Ryan Buell is no stranger to navigating talk about death. But in 2012, the paranormal investigator was forced to face his own mortality when, at age 29, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. In the first part of his exclusive interview with People, Buell candidly revealed the shock of his diagnosis, as well as coming to terms with the looming possibility of his death. Now, in his own words, Buell recalls the depths of his struggle as he underwent treatment, and looks back on the people who've bolstered him along the way as he treads a slow,...

In 2011, Paranormal State star Ryan Buell had a hit show on A&E, a successful book, and an array of new projects in the works. He wasn't feeling his best, but he blamed his production schedule for the constant fatigue. When his symptoms persisted months later, however, he sought medical attention. The diagnosis was devastating. Buell had pancreatic cancer. He was 29 years old. News of his illness broke last year, but the paranormal investigator has remained mostly quiet about his ordeal - until now. "I haven't really talked about it because I was in shock," says Buell. "Thank you all for your continued prayers and well-wishes. I won't lie, I have been in and out of the hospital all week. ... There are days where I hardly have strength to move, but I sometimes hear chants in the back of my head; cheers, telling me to get up and rise. And that keeps me going every day! God bless you all!"

The paranormal reality television genre has finally reached a point in where it can be grimly parodied. In the heights that this medium has reached, it is about time that these ghost hunters are getting a stab of the thorn. It is not wise to go adventuring into territory in where they will not be welcomed.
When they investigate Collingwood Psychiatric Hospital, the fate that Preston and his team end up in can best be described as taking the Kobayashi Maru test from “Star Trek II: Wrath of Kahn.” What they encounter tests both their character and resilience in a situation...

Professor Crazy’s Case Log: I’m going to be interviewing the famous and highly gifted author Stefan Petrucha today. He has a column here now, and he is the author of the best-selling X-Files comic book series and has written eighteen novels, including Timetripper, The Rule of Won, a book he coauthored with Ryan Buell (the host of A&E’s Paranormal State) called Paranormal State: My Journey Into the Unknown, and his most recent novel, which I reviewed here, the paranormal historical vampire novel Blood Prophecy. He has also appeared in three episodes of Paranormal State. Will I also have paranormal experiences during this interview? Who knows…read on to find out!
Professor Crazy: You prefer to be called Stefan or Steve? What is your favorite color, and what is your quest? You could answer those, but I have some very sensible, non-crazy questions for you, as well.

Welcome back, ladies and gents. Last time we had a really rousing discourse on labels which I found most enlightening. I hope you all did as well!
While researching the particulars of that column, I came across something very interesting. There's a peculiar phenomenon taking place in the weird world of celebrity that many of you have probably noticed: women are coming forward by the baker’s dozen and announcing their bisexuality. In case you haven't noticed, Google it for yourselves. If you do a search for "female bisexual celebrity," you get a half dozen solid hits.
Try the same search using "male" instead of "female" and you get ... a lot of articles asking where all of the bi men are at. Most of them are by AfterElton!
Anna Paquin, Lady Gaga, and Lindsay Lohan are just a few of the notable female celebrities to take up the bi label recently.

Welcome back to Snails & Oysters: The Bisexual Perspective! First up, why did I switch from Tiger Cub to my real name? It was a tough decision, because I am very fond of that nickname and, frankly, I feel a little naked without my stripes. But it was the right thing to do. In a column where I take on various groups, people and entities for propagating bi-invisibility (maybe binvisibility? Nah...) it would be disingenuous for me to hide behind a nom de plume.
However, you lot aren’t my getting my face pic. I draw the line there!
Next, I want to say a heartfelt thank you to all for the warm welcome I received in the comments of the first column. It really humbles me to hear so many bisexuals coming forward and saying how grateful they are for Snails & Oysters.
I also love the fierce debate this column is generating!

This column is here to give us a voice and to show others what the world looks like when glimpsed through the eyes of someone who likes both snails and oysters.

2010 may well have been a tipping point for gay public figures and the closet. The generally great reception celebrities have lately received for pro-actively coming out has got to be encouraging.
At the same time, the old rules of discretion and secrecy that could generally be counted on in the mainstream media and the entertainment industry seem to have completely eroded. Closeted gay celebrities just can't depend on the press or their industry peers to keep their secrets any longer. No closet is airtight, and staying in one these days leaves you highly vulnerable to rumor and innuendo. Or worse. Just ask an alleged friend of Carrie Fisher.
So arguably, in 2010 the risks of the celebrity closet have became patently greater than the rewards.

Unless you’re a fan of the paranormal, the name Ryan Buell probably isn’t one familiar to most gay and bisexual men. But when the 29-year-old paranormal investigator and host of A&E’s Paranormal State revealed he was bisexual in his new memoir, his profile in the Glbt community increased dramatically.
Even in 2010, most bisexual men choose to be discreet about their sexuality for a variety of reasons. But when Buell realized that his prominence in the paranormal research field, not to mention the fact he is quite public about his religious beliefs, meant he might be able to open some eyes about the issue of bisexuality, he knew he had to speak up.
AfterElton.com recently caught up with Buell to discuss his coming out, his conservative Southern family’s reaction and much more.

Starts off well, then quickly nose-dives into sensationalism and downright silliness, with a pair of villains who are straight out of a Roger Moore-era James Bond film. A real letdown for those of us who felt Dragon Tattoo had finally breathed life into the cinema’s long-stagnant genre of the thriller. Bonuses: English language track; Trailer. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.

It's Cheyenne On Glee! Squeeeee!
I thought I'd start of this week's column with some fun new pics I found recently!
First, I've got the exclusive first look at Cheyenne Jackson's first appearance on Glee as Will Schuester's new rival Dustin Goulsby.
Don't you love a man in black!
Adam Rose/Fox
In case you don't remember, last month Glee creator Ryan Murphy told me that Jackson "...is going to sing. He is going to dance, of course. He is the new coach of Vocal Adrenaline. He’s a complete villain. He wears all black. He’s a handsome, villain who will become very intertwined in Will’s life."
And we can't wait for Cheyenne's appearance on Tuesday's ep!
Speaking of things I can't wait for is new Torchwood miniseries (Ha! Whoever threw the rotten cabbage at me missed!) so to tide us over are two new pics I spotted of John Barrowman.

Plus George Michael gets jail time, Aiden James gives away music, and did Will.i.am sing the next gay pride anthem on Sesame Street?
Because this is how I always dress when flying.
Above you can see Lady Gaga at the airport, with her new tattoo, a unicorn with a ribbon around its horn that has the title of her new album, "Born This Way." I find it increasingly difficult to believe that this entire Lady Gaga Dadt repeal effort — her Sldn escorts, her Twitter campaign and the response from Senator Harry Reid — wasn't an intricately orchestrated piece of theater. We need more of this in our politics. Brett Claywell broke Twitter silence to announce he's running the New York City Marathon to raise money for Grassroots Soccer, an organization that does HIV/AIDS outreach in Africa via soccer. He's looking for sponsors for $25 for a single African youth to $1000 for an entire classroom.

If you've never seen the A&E series "Paranormal State", believe us when we tell you the show is about as strange as the subject matter that it portrays. Dig it or not, more televised things that go bump in the night are on their way!
According to The Hollywood Reporter A&E has renewed its ghost-hunting series "Paranormal State" for a fifth season.
What makes the series so strange, you ask? It's not that we don't believe in the paranormal and such. Sometimes spooky shit happens, and that's a fact. What's a bit harder to swallow is that when Ryan Buell and his Paranormal Research Society show up, any haunting, no matter how severe, is pretty much taken care of in just over twenty-three minutes.
Come on, guys! At least throw us a two-parter every now and then! This crew makes the fictitious Ghostbusters look like they're wading through slime in terms of speed.

For hundreds of years a creature of legend has roamed the woods known as The Jersey Devil. Ok, I never heard of it before either, so it's apparently no Loch Ness Monster, but I have it on pretty solid authority that there is such a legend. Throwing caution to the wind, and the general theory of the show to one side, Paranormal State lead Ryan Buell is going after the beast. For reasons I'm still not particularly clear on, Ryan got it under his skin to take his equipment for a look at this alleged beast. Though reports have been surfacing of a strange, winged-creature with a horse's face for more years than you care to mention, there has never been even a dubious photo of the thing, and Ryan wants to get some evidence.

After experiencing a haunting as a child, Ryan Buell founded the Paranormal Research Society (Prs), a team of investigators who travel across the country trying to help families cope with the supernatural.
Yes, I believe in ghosts. No, I don’t believe in psychics, mediums, ghost whisperers, etc. But instead of using this review to debate the existence of life after death, I’m going to answer two specific questions. Number one: Is this series entertaining?
Answer: For about five minutes. Each of the 21 episodes have a few chilling moments that mainly come during the “interview” sessions. This is where the haunted describe their supernatural encounters. These testimonials provide the frightening atmosphere of a campfire ghost story, and if there are any nightmares to be influenced by Paranormal State, it will be these scenes that spark them.
I haven’t seen the previous seasons so I can’t compare, but...

The Sci Fi Channel's original program "Ghost Hunters" has become a cable phenomenon. It is one of the highest rated programs on the network and has even spurred a few spin-offs that are just as successful. Yesterday, Sci Fi greenlit the production of a new spin-off tentatively called "Ghost Hunters: College Edition". Press Release.
The premise would put college kids with seasoned ghost hunting veterans to go check out collegiate hot spots around the country. I don't know if those credits will count towards your major, but it certainly can't hurt.
If you feel like you've heard this all before, you have. Last year A&E launched their higher education spook show, "Paranormal State", which chronicles the Penn State Club for Paranormal Research. Led by student Ryan Buell, who as a child experienced some freaky shit. The show is unique in that it shows them out trying to record ghosts on tape,...
