Tim Burton's “The Nightmare Before Christmas” is a title widely recognized as one of the best executions of stop-motion animation in recent times. The film and poem of the same name tell the story of an infamous Pumpkin King named Jack Skellington, who has grown tired of his monotonous life and causes mass hysteria when he pursues a drastic change. “March 11th, 2011: a massive earthquake off the coast of Japan triggered a devastating tsunami which, in turn, destroyed the three core reactors of the Fukushima nuclear power plant. This tragedy cost almost 20,000 lives and devastated countless more, including Naoto Matsumura, a farmer ordered to evacuate from the deadly radiation zone. Unwilling to abandon his beloved animals, Matsumura chose to return home to his farm, and to fight for the beauty of life. This powerful graphic novel from France intertwines Matsumura’s story of human resilience and compassion with the compelling mythology of Japanese folk tales.” (Tokyopop)

In the absence of a co-production treaty between Brazil and the Us, trade groups representing the two countries will sign this Thursday (October 3) an agreement dedicated to building a strategic partnership in the sectors of film, television and new media production.
The Interstate Association Of Audiovisual Industry (Sicav-rj) from Rio de Janeiro and the Producers Guild Of America (PGA) began to discuss the partnership in May during Cannes.
“We have already built out an international representation with more than 15 countries, including France, New Zeeland and Korea,” said Stu Levy, chair of the PGA’s international committee.
“Brazil will be our first Latin American partner. Even though there is a demand for Latin American producers in the Us, especially in Los Angeles, Miami and New York, people don’t know how to access each other.”
Levy will sign the agreement during RioMarket, the business side of the Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival that runs until October 9.

Where were you in mid-March of last year? If you were in Japan at the time, chances are you experienced something most people won’t even come close to in their lifetime. Cell phone signals were lost, traffic lights went out, people started panicking as the Earth began to shake and rumble… no, it wasn’t Godzilla, but something much more elemental. Japan had just been rocked by a magnitude 9.0 megathrust earthquake and was about to feel the true might of such an event: the unstoppable resulting 124-ft high tsunami.
The destruction wasn’t limited to cars and houses and businesses. The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant was also heavily damaged in the aftermath causing level 7 meltdowns in three of their reactors bringing the estimated grand total to a staggering 325 billion dollars in damages. In all, more than 20,000 people lost...

Honors One-Year Anniversary of Japanese Tsunami Tragedy
On March 11, 2011, Japan’s Tohoku coastal region was destroyed by a 9.0 magnitude earthquake and devastating tsunami that followed. Pray For Japan takes place in the devastated region of Ishinomaki, Miyagi – the largest coastal city in Tohoku with a population of over 160,000 people. Filmmaker Stu Levy – an American living in Japan – filmed the tsunami aftermath during his trips to Tohoku as a volunteer and over a period of 6 weeks, captured over 50 hours of footage.
Pray For Japan focuses on four key perspectives of the tragedy – School, Shelter, Family, and Volunteers. With each perspective we meet victims who faced significant obstacles and fought to overcome them. Through these four vantage points, the audience is able to understand the vast ramifications of this large-scale natural disaster – and the battle these real-life heroes fought on behalf of their loved ones and their hometown.

On Friday the comic book world lost an important cultural player when TokyoPop, the company that is single handedly responsible for making Manga a mainstream medium in the U.S., announced it would be closing its doors after nearly 15 years of business. The closure is due in no small part to the failing of Borders who was TokyoPop’s biggest customer.
Below is a personal statement by Stu Levy, founder of Tokyopop, thanking all the loyal fans of the company:

Dear Tokyopop Community:
Way back in 1997, we set out to bring a little-known form of Japanese entertainment to American shores. I originally named our little company “Mixx”, meaning a mix of entertainment, mix of media, and mix of cultures. My dream was to build a bridge between Japan and America, through the incredible stories I discovered as a student in Tokyo.

A few years ago, you couldn’t go into a bookstore without running into an aisle of kids in the manga section, and odds are, they were reading a series published by TokyoPop. There have a few times over my years of attending film festivals that I’ve seen a short film so amazing I wish it had been feature-length. More often than not, I’ve seen films that would have worked as shorts, but fall apart as features. Unfortunately, Van Von Hunter falls into the latter category.
Based on a Manga series, the film is a mockumentary that envisions titular character crossing the threshold between his imaginary land of Dikay into our reality; specifically, Hollywood. He meets up with a student filmmaker who, intrigued by Von Hunter’s dedication to hunting evil “stuff”, encourages him to audition for a moving being made of the Manga based on him. What follows is a fish-out-of-water story, where Von Hunter learns of the evils of Hollywood, the trauma of love, and the precarious nature of stardom.

The second annual Producer’s Guild of America’s “Produced by Conference” took place June 4-6 at the Twentieth Century Fox studios in Los Angeles.

The Producers Guild of America will offer five international film producers the opportunity to meet with their U.S. counterparts at its inaugural International Film Co-Production Showcase.
CoProShow, as the project market will be dubbed, will take place in connection with the PGA's second annual Produced by Conference, set for June 4-6 at the Fox Studios in Los Angeles.

Interested producers must submit by April 30 a screenplay synopsis for a feature-length project under development. It then will be reviewed by a panel of U.S. producers, and five...
