It's not only political campaigns that inspire musical artists to exercise the power of veto on the use of their songs. For reasons of finance, reputation, ego, taste and more, the following TV shows and films weren't able to secure the use of the recordings they originally sought...
Frank Sinatra – Goodfellas
This Express piece quotes an Empire Magazine interview with Martin Scorsese’s long-time editor Thelma Schoonmaker in which she relates how the original plan was to have Frank Sinatra’s original recording of My Way play over the end credits of modern gangster classic Goodfellas instead of the Sid Vicious cover that was eventually used.
“Sinatra would never let Marty use his music,” explains Schoonmaker, “which is too bad because Marty may...

If not for Soledad O'Brien, this would be the only time I can watch CNN without yelling at the TV.
We're at the closing of the year and I hope you all make sure to stay safe in celebrating the transition to 2013.

Here's more reason to feel optimistic about One Life to Live and All My Children coming back — Soap Opera Digest reports that Oltl has found a showrunner while Vincent Irizarry has signed up for the AMC revival.
Okay, for a channel that has seemed to decide its theme involves documenting the worst of our society (when aliens discover earth and try to figure out what happened to humanity, TLC will become The Learning Channel again, teaching the aliens how it all went wrong), a show about married women who compete in beauty pageants doesn't sound so bad. Deadline reports that Pageant Wives will follow the usual TLC...

Last week, we watched as the American Idol contestants took on songs from the Billy Joel songbook. This week, the Top 9 tackle the songs of their idols, which includes a range of songs from Lifehouse to Led Zeppelin.
Ryan issues the proclamation to start: "May the odds be ever in your favor," and suddenly I'm imagining the contestants going at it Capitol-style, which is way more interesting than tonight's show turned out to be. In the dome, as on the stage, my money would still be on Phillip Phillips since he's a country boy. And country boys can survive, right?
Colton Dixon is up first singing one of my favorite Lifehouse songs--"Everything." Stevie Nicks says this song "goes into the heart of woman." As much as I'm a Colton fan, and as much as I truly love this song, this wasn't my favorite performance of his. It was kind...

It was a “night of redemption” on American Idol, said Ryan Seacrest. Or, as Steven Tyler put it, “a magical mystery tour of over-the-top talent and emotion.” Then again, from my living-room couch, it was more like “a night when even middling guys got standing ovations from the judges, while the best ladies received ‘praise’ with a side of vague ennui, until it came down to, ‘Oh, okay, I guess we’ll get off our lazy butts for Elise.’”
To be fair, Season 11′s Top 9 telecast was pretty damn stellar, one of the best Idol performance nights in recent memory.

"Smallville's" highly anticipated 200th episode is almost here, and it's sure to be a favorite for longtime fans of the show - and for those of you who may have tuned out a few years back. The nostalgia-fest airs October 15 at 8 p.m. Est, but we've got a sneak peek at some heartwarming photos below.
In the episode, Lois (Erica Durance) and Clark (Tom Welling) return to Smallville High for their reunion. Though Lois's time there doesn't start off great - nobody remembers her brief tenure as a student, and she's confronted with the memory of Clark's old flame Lana Lang - we have a feeling it gets better.
"Fans of Lois and Clark's relationship are going to find this episode particularly satisfying," Warner Bros. Television president Peter Roth told us at the 200th Episode Party. "There's a really beautiful moment between them that shapes their relationship."

Next performer coming to "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" after the Tuesday show is Avril Lavigne who is set to sing on the next day. Furthermore, Lifehouse and Robin Thicke are billed for the March 4 and 5 shows respectively.

Gut wrenching lyrics paired with painful imagery is a good way to draw in an audience and hook them into whatever you are selling. In the past few years, it has become more common for television shows to preview upcoming episodes similar to movie trailers. What connects them both is the perfectly picked and placed music for the trailers that draws in the viewers. Grey's Anatomy has perfected this technique as well as many studios, but, do you think that the music makes the trailer? As Denny lies dead in bed, his fiancé Izzie Stevens grips onto any form of reality as the pain sets in that she has just lost the love of her life. In that moment of utter pain and turmoil for the cast of Grey's Anatomy, Snow Patrol's "Chasing Cars" begins. The lyrics, the beat, and the message all fit perfectly into the episode and...
