In the pre-coverage of Joe Biden’s State of the Union address, the speech is being billed as the most important of his presidency, what with his dismal approval numbers and what is shaping up to be very difficult campaign for reelection.
Moreover, so much attention has been paid to the president’s age — at 81, he is the first octogenarian on a major party ticket — that any kind of slip up will be seized upon by his rivals.
Then again, Biden’s most memorable moment last year was an exchange with House Republicans over Social Security, showing that the president had command of the stage. That’s why it’ll be interesting to see if GOP members restrain themselves so as to not give the president the opportunity this year.

A small contingent of journalists gathered near the Canadian border earlier this morning to watch as Dixville Notch, Nh, continued its tradition of casting the first ballots on an election day.
Nikki Haley cleaned Donald Trump’s clock in this hamlet — 6 votes to none.
As the day goes on, network correspondents are fanning out across the state at precincts to talk to actual voters, after months in which the first-in-the-nation primary was judged and assessed by polls. Commentary and analysis is focusing on whether
Haley and her top surrogate, New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu, blitzed the airwaves on Monday, while Trump held a final rally in Laconia, Nh, where he predicted that Haley would be out of the race after tonight. He was interrupted by climate protesters, who have been a frequent presence at events in recent days.

The winners of this year’s recipients of the Walter Cronkite Awards had a common theme: Combating misinformation.
So when award sponsor USC Annenberg’s Norman Lear Center held a National Press Club luncheon for the honorees last week, there was a bit of reminder of the stakes: During the ceremony news unfolded of the unsealing of former President Donald Trump’s federal indictment.
Many of the winners reported on Trump and his false claims of a stolen 2020 election, something that he has repeated during his current election campaign. He’s also called the indictment itself the “boxes hoax.”
Martin Kaplan, director of The Norman Lear Center, said, “Disinformation is an apt focus in particular for the Cronkite award, not only because it feels like disinformation is everywhere all at once, but because the namesake of this award is Walter Cronkite” who was known as “the most trusted man in America.

On Election Night, NBC News will split its own ticket.
Yes, viewers can see Lester Holt, Savannah Guthrie Chuck Todd and Andrea Mitchell hold forth on NBC proper. But they might also seek out a growing array of programming on digital venues.
Though NBC News has had a presence on TikTok since 2019, the unit is for the first time dispatching personnel to provide real-time reporting to the venue’s users says Catherine Kim, senior vice president of global digital news. NBC News can tap any of its journalists to deliver a quick hit, recut a piece of video that ran elsewhere, or, says Kim, ramp up new efforts to tell users if misinformation is circulating. A series, #NBCdebunks, aims to give the TikTok audience facts in the face of false stories circulating on the app.
“It’s going to be a real priority,” says Kim, of the growing TikTok effort.

The funeral of Queen Elizabeth II on Monday, Sep. 19, is shaping up to be a global spectacle. World leaders, including President Biden, will be in attendance, and the world’s media will be there, too.
The queen’s funeral will be the first time such an event has been broadcast on television. In 1952, when Queen Elizabeth ascended to the throne, the funeral procession of King George VI was televised in the U.K., but the funeral itself remained private. Not so this time.
While the BBC will be the official broadcaster of the proceedings, every U.S. TV news organization will be in attendance, flying in many of their top anchors and blowing up their typical programming lineups to carry it live.

Broadcast and cable networks have news teams in place in Ukraine as attention focuses on the possibility of an invasion, perhaps as soon as this week.
President Joe Biden will deliver remarks on the situation at the White House on Tuesday.
While Russian President Vladimir Putin said that they were continuing to negotiate, and there were claims of a pullback for some troops, there also were reports of skepticism among NATO allies.
Meanwhile, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Monday that the U.S. was “temporarily relocating” Embassy operations in Kyiv to Lviv “due to the dramatic acceleration in the buildup of Russian forces.”
In addition to having teams in Washington focused on the escalating crisis, networks have correspondents on the ground in Ukraine, in some cases adding reporters. CNN’s Erin Burnett anchored her show, Erin Burnett OutFront, from Lviv on Monday.

TV news is latching on to an old standby to help it gain attention in a new — and often less flashy — news cycle.
Coverage of the court trial of Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer charged with causing the death of George Floyd, will surface Monday across many mainstream TV outlets. Some of it will be gavel-to-gavel, the sort of thing that echoes the news media’s fascination with the O.J. Simpson murder trial of 1995.
Many TV-news outlets have seen key ratings tumble as the nation emerges from the coronavirus pandemic and in the wake of the end of President Donald Trump’s term in office. The looming trial could serve as new means of winning audiences. “There’s always pressure in television news to find stories that bring in ratings, but especially now because viewer numbers have dropped so much without Trump in the White House,” says Mark Feldstein,...

Updated with schedules for Week 2 hearings: The House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence will continue public hearings in the impeachment inquiry of President Donald Trump for a second week beginning Tuesday. Last week’s three witnesses marked the first such hearings to take place since President Bill Clinton was impeached in 1998 and only the fourth time against a sitting president in U.S. history.
The House of Representatives is probing charges that Trump attempted to coerce Ukraine, a foreign government, to launch an investigation of political rival Joe Biden and his son. The hearings could wrap before the end of the year.
Like last week, cable networks are planning full-court coverage for scheduled hearings this Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (see the breakdown below). Most broadcast networks plan to break in to regularly scheduled programming, while offering uninterrupted coverage via their digital outlets.
Deadline will also live-stream all the hearings this week.

TV pundits seem to have come to the same conclusion about special counsel Robert Mueller’s damning testimony before Congress this morning: Mueller is boring. (Watch the livestream here.)
Mueller’s testimony before the House Judiciary Committee on the subject of obstruction of justice reiterated a number of his report findings damaging to President Donald Trump: Trump was not exonerated, Trump could theoretically be criminally charged with obstruction after leaving office, Russia’s election interference was a “serious” threat to American democracy.

It may be one of the most infuriating moments in TV history, as Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and university professpr Christine Blasey Ford, one of several women who has accused him of sexual assault when they were teens, are expected to testify Thursday before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
The hearing, which is scheduled to take place at 10 a.m. Et in the Dirksen Senate Office Building, comes despite the fact that Ford and Senate Democrats have asked for an FBI investigation into Ford’s claims. The Senate committee officials and Donald Trump have refused to allow the FBI to examine the allegations.
Instead, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), who refused to even hold a Senate hearing in 2016 on Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland, is now looking to “plow right through” the confirmation process despite growing number of allegations against Kavanaugh.

ABC, CBS, and NBC — preempting their usual daytime TV lineups — will air live reports as Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday.
The highly anticipated event, which is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. Et on Thursday, Sept. 27, will also be covered by live cable news networks and live-streamed on the internet.
Kavanaugh has now been accused by three women of sexual misconduct. Ford was the first to come forward, saying that Kavanaugh assaulted her at a high school party in 1982. Kavanaugh has repeatedly denied the accusations, and told Fox News’ Martha MacCallum in an interview Monday that he was a virgin “in high school or for many years thereafter.”
Some Republican senators including Susan Collins (R.-Maine) have remained undecided about whether to vote to confirm Kavanaugh, and Thursday’s hearing may determine the outcome of his nomination by President Donald Trump.

Us president's skit in which he impersonates Daniel Day-Lewis is highlight of White House Correspondents' Association dinner
The White House Correspondents' Association dinner is historically a chance for the Us president to show off his lighter side, and Barack Obama has done so yet again, and showcased his acting skills to boot.
Two years ago Obama used the address to poke fun at Donald Trump and the "birthers", claiming to have unearthed a video as conclusive proof of his origins … which turned out to be a clip from The Lion King.

Obama used this year's annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner to poke fun at himself and some of his political adversaries, asking if it was still possible to be brought down a peg after 4½ years as commander-in-chief.

A big change is coming to late-night television.
