Stars: Jonnie Hurn, Chloe Farnworth, Dan Burman | Written and Directed by Drew Cullingham
Drew Cullingham, writer/director of the Western vampire flick Umbrage: The First Vampire, returns with The Devil’s Bargain, a apocalyptic tale set in 1974 and shot on a shoestring budget in twenty-four hours over four days, using an experimental ‘pinhole’ technique and distributed outside the UK’s censorship regime via streaming service Distrify.
With earth about to be obliterated by a massive asteroid, Adi (Hurn) and his young wife Ange (Farnworth), haunted by memories of the death of their son, journey to the idyllic rural setting where he was conceived, determined to shed clothes, inhibitions and psychological traumas before the planet is destroyed forever. But the arrival of Luca (Burman), a charismatic and mysterious young photographer, turns what’s left of their world upside-down and the horror to come is of biblical proportions.

This sentimental, humourless, badly acted comedy centres on Callum Cutter (Jonnie Hurn), a young British ad man who's mortgaged everything he possesses to set up his own agency, only to lose faith in his vocation when faced with preparing a campaign for a foul drink called Cremeberry, a mixture of cranberry juice and crème de menthe. T'ai chi and chainsmoking fail to work for him, but along comes the fey Malika (Julie Dray), who has walked out of a tiresome French film of the 1950s into a swinging London movie of the 60s. She gives him a self-help book called "Everything You Know Is Wrong", and during a visit to a magical forest in Brittany she shows him – with some freshly gathered psychedelic mushrooms – what life is really about. She could, of course, be a figment of his imagination.

Flight | Hyde Park On Hudson | Bullet To The Head | Antiviral | Bullhead | Chained | The Punk Syndrome | Do Elephants Pray? | Cirque Du Soleil: Worlds Away | A Place In The Sun
Flight (15)
(Robert Zemeckis, 2012, Us) Denzel Washington, Don Cheadle, Kelly Reilly. 138 mins
A white-knuckle plane crash is just the beginning of Washington's troubles in this unorthodox drama, which finds his hero-pilot status compromised by the fact that he was high on duty. Between the demons of alcoholism and the aviation authority investigation, he goes into a personal tailspin – but it's not your typical rehab story and you'll want to see how he'll get out of it.
Hyde Park On Hudson (12A)
(Roger Michell, 2012, UK) Bill Murray, Laura Linney, 95 mins
Daniel Day-Lewis won't be losing any sleep over Murray's take on Franklin D Roosevelt. This directionless drama deals with the president's special relationships – first with an obliging cousin (Linney), then with Britain, via a visit from George VI.

The spiritual life of elephants is just one of many things left unilluminated by this brain-stiflingly awful drama
Possibly. They might also eat and love, at the same time. But the spiritual life of elephants is one of many subjects left unilluminated by this rat-race escape drama of brain-stifling awfulness. I usually want to cheer independent, low-budget British featureswhich offer an alternative to big Hollywood shlock. But it's impossible here. The drama is leaden; the dialogue is cliches; the sound quality is often terrible and the acting is frankly not going to be troubling the decision-makers at Bafta. It is as if key performers have had their coffee secretly spiked with a lethal cocktail of Temazepam and Mogadon. The story concerns an ad exec called Callum, played by the film's writer, Jonnie Hurn. He yearns for meaning in his life and falls for a mysterious French free-spirit called Malika (Julie Dray...

★★★☆☆ Based on an original screenplay written by its star performer Jonnie Hurn, Do Elephants Pray? (2010) is something of a low-key British indie oddity from director Paul Hills. Any film in which its central character literally hugs trees could well extricate groans from a modern audience. Fortunately, this part rom-com, part treatise on embracing nature manages to successfully conquer (to an extent) a difficult balancing act. Its message of eschewing materialism is placed alongside surreal comedy, with supporting characters that are either grotesque or delightfully odd-ball, yet are never less than entertaining.

The Horror Channel “Movie Of The Month” is Drew Cullingham’s Umbrage: The First Vampire, which is broadcast on Friday 22nd June. The film stars legendary British actor Doug Bradley (Hellraiser) and concerns an unscrupulous antique dealer’s ancient mirror that serves as a portal for shadowy beings to be unleashed into the night with a thirst for blood.
Drew talks about his outstanding directorial debut and his plans for the future….
How did you start in the movie business?
DC: Slowly! There was a time when all the things I take for granted now, all the people (actors and crew) and all the facilities and so on, were a faraway dream. I worked a little in TV, mostly filming food related VTs for live shows, and I cut my teeth bit by bit on a few short films. Of course even then I was begging, borrowing and stealing in...

"Umbrage is a dark fairytale, mixing mythology, horror, and western styles, to create a unique and intriguing film like no other."
So says the whoever wrote the liner notes on the dvd box, and they state the truth. Umbrage is like no other films I've seen, and I am very grateful for that.
Our dark fairy tale opens in the old west, where an unidentified gunslinger (Hurn) is a gunnin' for a mysterious stranger in a bar. It's interesting to note that these two seem to be the only ones in town. The gunslinger gets body checked by an unidentified woman, who proceeds to chow down on our hapless desperado, as mysterious stranger watches from the doorway.
Jump ahead to present day England. Jacob (Bradley) is bringing his pregnant wife (Vallorani) and 30-year-old 18-year-old assistant,...

Umbrage: The First Vampire
Stars: Doug Bradley, Rita Ramnani, Jonnie Hurn, Natalie Celino | Written and Directed by Drew Cullingham
Did you know that before Eve existed Adam had another wife named Lilith? Did you know vampire cowboys can be fans of Buffy? These are two of the things you will find out when you watch Umbrage: The First Vampire.
When this movie starts off like some cowboy movie with a vampire attack you think this may be the setting for the movie, but you would be wrong. After this initial attack we are taken to Europe, yet the music in the background keeps the whole country and western feel which gives it an odd feeling really. This does fit the movie as a whole though as I would describe it as odd.

Okay, Spider-Man puns aside, what we're talking about here is the new flick The Power, which was originally announced at Cannes. Not that dealing with Satan or real life Satanists doesn't come with its own set of responsibilities of course.
According to Screen Daily Grace Vallorani, Jonnie Hurn, Valentine Pelka, Constance Carter, Rosie Fellner and Earl Ling all star in Moviehouse Entertainment's The Power, which is currently under way in Norwich, England under the direction of Paul Hills.
Look for more on this one as it comes.
Synopsis
Abducted and imprisoned by a cult, Magda awakens in a filthy cell. Despite hearing distant voices, her screams for help go unanswered. She's a prisoner, seemingly without hope... In time, she befriends another hostage, a girl who provides some comfort. However, as the weeks pass, the cult members prepare Magda for participation in a dark ritual with demonic, religious and sexual overtones; and her despair grows.

Release: UK DVD: 17th October 2011, Us Release Date: Quarter 1.
Quite often, the universal definition of the vampire gets bent out of shape in cinema. Either there is too much lust, or not enough blood. Writers and creators have often spun a new take on the creature of the night and there is no escaping the romance. The flavours that exist can vary, and for filmmaker Drew Cullingham, Umbrage: The First Vampire is his vision of two loves—or should that be three?
"I guess I couldn't decide whether I wanted to do a western, a horror, or a drama," jokes Cullingham.
This auteur has no problems with mixing up the genres, and sometimes it can lead to an exciting product. At other times, the product is simply misunderstood.

A trailer has finally arrived for Michael Bartlett and Kevin Gates' sequel to their sleeper hit The Zombie Diaries. Unfortunately it's not in the best shape, and I've been in contact with the team to try and get a better copy, but for now you can get a low-res taste of the horrors that await you.
Synopsis:
Three months have passed since a viral outbreak wiped out 99.9% of the world's population, turning its victims into flesh-eating living dead. In the UK a surviving band of soldiers and civilians have taken refuge at a rural military barracks. Life in this new world is tough and brutal, but hope appears when a high-level communication is received from a military base on the coast, telling of sanctuary elsewhere in Europe...
But just as salvation appears to be in reach, the base suffers an overwhelming defeat at the hands of the living dead!

In Michael Bartlett's follow-up to the 2006 The Zombie Diaries, you best be armed to fight the apocalypse, as the trailer tells us. Umbrage is a horror styled vampire thriller set in the "Old West," and oddly enough this reviewer mentioned that there are very few horror themed Westerns released a few weeks ago (Umbrage). Now, with Revelation Trail, The Devil's Crossing, and Deadwalkers, there seems to be a wide range of films in this very unique sub-genre. Umbrage will add a vampire angle with tales of ancient antique deals, and mutilated corpses plus cowboys and six-shooters. Have a watch of a new clip for Umbrage, which has secured some international distribution, with domestic distro' forthcoming (London, England), inside.
A partial synopsis for Umbrage here:
"In the Old West, the assassination of an aging cowboy is thwarted by a sultry vampiress, the would-be killer left for dead in the dust…
A hundred years later an ancient obsidian mirror, long unearthed from the Mesopotamian desert, is liberated from an American collector’s vault and illegally transported to Europe.

Have we not really seen a good vampire film since Near Dark? The Forsaken? Nope. Let the Right One In comes very close, but despite that beautiful film's merits, when was the last time we were introduced to an iconic vampire character? Buffy and Angel maybe, but they are T.V. icons. Perhaps more to the point; when have we been given what we always craved? An Irish cowboy vampire! The answer is never - until now. Drew Cullingham’s soon-to-be released debut indie feature, Umbrage, is a very unique type of horror film – if that’s even what you want to call it.
Basically, the film tells the tale of a mysterious mirror which causes evil forces to be released into the open and consequently turns the world of an antiques...

UK writer / director, Drew Cullingham, makes his feature debut with Umbrage, a dark new indie vampire film that, through oodles of posturing, still looks like it might be pretty decent.
Synopsis:
"A family find themselves in the middle of a century old grudge between a vengeful undead cowboy and the re-awakened Lilith, mother to the Succubi, ruler of shadows, slaughterer of children, and consort to the devil himself.
Sometimes the only weapon against evil is evil itself...
Umbrage stars Doug Bradley of Hellraiser and Nightbreed fame along with Rita Ramnani, Jonnie Hurn (The Zombie Diaries), Natalie Celino, Grace Vallorani, James Fisher and Scott Thomas.
Trailer (via: Bd) after the break.
