Horror director Mike Flanagan has some interesting ideas about the genre. "Horror affords us the opportunity to really look at ourselves and the things that scare us... as a society and individuals," he once told The New York Times. His characters often face literal ghosts. But just as often, they confront their haunting past mistakes -- lingering memories of grief or trauma. Ahead of the release of "The Haunting of Bly Manor," Flanagan said: "I really wanted to play more with ghosts as an expression of emotional wounds... how the past and present can echo each other." These themes inform the vast majority of his work -- from his early films like "Absentia" to his later television shows. Some projects are more successful than others. However, all of them are worth a watch -- if only to see a filmmaker fine-tune his ability over time to wield the tools of...

Turning a much loved literary classic into a TV series isn’t easy, but Netflix is onto a winner with Mike Flanagan…
Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting Of Hill House might be the best ghost story ever written. Published in 1959, it’s about a makeshift team of paranormal investigators moving into the legendarily haunted Hill House in an attempt to document and analyse the supernatural phenomena manifesting within its walls – but it’s really about grief, and guilt, and repression, and the desperate longing for a home. It’s beautifully constructed, impeccably written, and genuinely terrifying.
See related Doctor Who: Extremis geeky spots and Easter eggs
And now it’s being turned into a 10-part Netflix series.
It’s a story that, at least on the surface, appears to lend itself quite easily to screen adaptations, and in fact it’s already been turned into two films: The Haunting (1963) and,...

Tricia’s husband Daniel has been missing for seven years. Her younger sister Callie comes to live with her and helps her find the strength to finally declare him legally dead ‘in absentia’. As Tricia tries to move on with her life she is haunted by terrifying visions while her sister finds herself drawn to an ominous tunnel near the house which is linked to other unexplained disappearances. It becomes clear the tunnel holds a dark secret, something lies in the shadows and Daniel may be suffering a fate far worse than death.
Absentia is, for all intents and purposes, a movie about loss – the loss of a loved one, the loss of control… It also deals with the dark side of life, the side of which you’d don’t always...

Back in 2011 my best of the year list was topped by Mike Flanagan's Absentia, and with his follow-up, Oculus, in theatres now, it's good to see a little love being shown to his award-winning breakthrough film as it hits UK Blu-ray for the first time.
From the Press Release:
One of the most frightening films of recent years, Mike Flanagan's critically acclaimed Absentia makes its UK Blu-ray debut courtesy of Second Sight Films. A new DVD release is on its way as well, with both hitting stores on 7 July.
Synopsis:
Tricia’s (Courtney Bell) husband, Daniel, has been missing for seven years, and with the help of her sister, Callie (Katie Parker), she finally declares him legally dead ‘in absentia.’ As Tricia tries to move on with her life, she becomes haunted by terrifying visions, while Callie is strangely drawn to an ominous tunnel near the house with links to other unexplained disappearances.

Oculus
Written by Mike Flanagan and Jeff Howard

USA, 2013
Thanks to the likes of James Wan, paranormal horror is all the rage. From Paranormal Activity to Insidious and The Conjuring, audiences are irretrievably hooked to tales of nuclear families being bloodlessly menaced by only-fleetingly-visible entities of malicious intent. What’s remarkable about Mike Flanagan’s Oculus, which follows his no-budget wonder Absentia, is how it manages to wring genuine dread from a beyond-worn subgenre simply by paying close attention to the realities of its deeply troubled characters. Oculus functions equally well as a tragic psychodrama as it does a horror film.
Flanagan appears to have taken inspiration from Stephen King’s seminal It, in which a group of childhood friends reunite to vanquish an evil force that has long plagued their town. Where King’s novel (and the TV-movie adaptation) adopted a neatly bifurcated structure, Flanagan flits between past and present,...

Although mainstream horror cinema has been slow to churn out titles, and as of late seems to have opted to focus primarily on remaking the classics of yesteryear, there is a vast quantity of low budget and independent titles coming out every week. Due to limited means and the microscopic marketing budgets associated with independent filmmaking, it’s easy for quality films to slip through the cracks. In response to that, we created this recurring segment to explore titles that might have flown under your radar. [If you missed out on our previous lists of forgotten gems, follow the links to Part One and Part Two of our series.] As we’ve mentioned before, we think it a travesty that well-made titles are going largely unnoticed by the genre film community and being placed on the back burner in favor of sometimes tepid theatrical releases. In an effort to remedy that, we're offering up five titles from the past five years that you may have missed... but should definitely see. Hopefully, even those...

Last week saw the release of Disney’s blockbuster John Carter for our small screens, alongside the long-awaited release of Kenneth Lonergan’s Margaret – you can read Jon’s review of the DVD here.
This week’s list is fairly short but sweet, with some of the finest films released in the first quarter of the year.
My picks of the week:
Oren Moverman’s Rampart & Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s 21 Jump Street.

DVD and Blu-ray
(also available: HMV Exclusive – Blu-ray Double Play inc. DVD)
Oren Moverman returns with his second feature after 2009’s Oscar-nominated The Messenger, with Woody Harrelson taking the lead this time around, and Ben Foster heading up the support alongside Ice Cube, Anne Heche, Ned Beatty, Brie Larson, Cynthia Nixon, Robin Wright, Sigourney Weaver, and Steve Buscemi – a fantastic cast, I’m sure you’ll agree.

When you start off watching a movie about two women, one whose husband has been missing for seven years the other with a drug problem, you begin to hear echos of the Lifetime Network in the back of your brain. On any other day you’d be right, but today we’re talking about Mike Flanagan’s Absentia. We are talking about what it means to leave your house every day in fear. Better file a missing persons report… for yourself.
Synopsis:
Absentia tells the story of a woman and her sister who begin to link a mysterious tunnel to a series of disappearances. Tricia’s husband has been missing for seven years. Her younger sister Callie comes to live with her as the pressure mounts to finally declare him ‘dead in absentia.’ Tricia is reluctant, always holding out hope, but Callie is practical and wants her to move on.

*full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by Phase 4 Films.
Director/writer: Mike Flanagan.
Cast: Katie Parker, Courtney Bell and Dave Levine.
Some viewers may experience strangeness while watching Absentia. After a while, the same synthesizer sounds and monotone guitar beats will either mesmerize audiences or cause auditory hallucinations. This background music sounds like it is from one of Brainwave Mind Voyage’s psycho acoustic products. After a while, a few may wonder if that tired feeling will ever wear off.
The soundscape created for this film is strangely appropriate. In a tale about Tricia (Courtney Bell) trying to cope with the disappearance of Danny (Morgan Peter Brown), her husband, the music is like a psychological journey of the experiences to come. That is especially important when she is often seen meditating. With a Tibetan singing bowl sitting next to her, she should have used it more often.

Writer / director Mike Flanagan is prepping for his next feature, Scare Dares. The man behind Absentia returns in what he calls "a love letter to horror." "It's my 'thank you' to King, Argento, Shimizu, Del Toro and of course, Lovecraft," Flanagan said. Interestingly, Flanagan is stacking the cast with Absentia stars Justin Gordon, Morgan Peter Brown, Courtney Bell, Katie Parker, and Dave Levine in order to ensure a film that is terrifying while working with actors he knows and trusts. Hopefully this won't serve to confuse audiences into thinking this is an Absentia sequel. Hit the jump for the full poster and synopsis. Official synopsis: "Scare Dares tells the...

Words alone cannot begin to describe how happy we are about the following bit of news. Around here we've been raving about a little indie movie called Absentia, which is pretty damned spooky. Now, once again... the little guy makes good!
According to Variety, Fallback Plan Productions is ramping up Scare Dares, a sub-$1 million indie chiller with an inventive mobile app tie-in that aims to start shooting later this year.
Scare Dares reteams Mike Flanagan, writer/director of micro-budget horror pic Absentia, with the same producers and much of the same cast, including Courtney Bell, Katie Parker, Justin Gordon and Morgan Peter Brown.
Scare Dares, described as an "adrenalized homage to classic horror films," centers on a smartphone app that leads users to known areas of paranormal phenomena in central California. Things go wrong when a group of estranged friends kick off a reunion weekend by visiting ghostly hotspots and engaging in occult dares.

After six years, Toronto After Dark is bigger than ever. The films are better, the lines are longer and the fan-frenzy is wilder. This year’s chilling selection included: civil war zombies, creepy abductors, cliff-hanging killers, post-apocalyptic insanity and suburban hell – a sci-fi horror fan’s paradise.
Writer-director John Geddes’ Exit Humanity is a post-civil war zombie epic set in 1870’sTennessee. When his wife and son fall victim to the undead, Edward Young (Mark Gibson in a breakout performance) flees across the countryside for survival, but zombies are the least of his worries after he’s captured by a band of ruthless Confederate soldiers who are obsessed with conducting medical experiments. Geddes‘ concept of zombies in the old west is a fresh perspective on the popular genre. The film’s use of animation (a budgetary decision) advances the action excellently and the beautiful cinematography makes this a great-looking period movie.

Founder of Shriekfest Denise Gossett was voted one of the top women in Horror for a reason. She puts together one of the biggest and longest running genre festivals out there. She's such a sweet and down to earth lady that it's hard to believe that she's responsible for bringing so much horror into the world. This year was no different.

In writer/director Mike Flanagan's Absentia (review here), we follow Tricia (Courtney Bell), whose husband Daniel has been missing for seven years. Her younger sister, Callie (Katie Parker), comes to live with her as the pressure mounts to finally declare him 'dead in absentia.' As Tricia sifts through the wreckage and tries to move on with her life, Callie finds herself drawn to an ominous tunnel near the house.
Once Callie begins to link it to other mysterious disappearances, it becomes clear that Daniel's presumed death might be anything but 'natural.' The ancient and deadly forces at work in the tunnel have set their sights on Callie and Tricia now after the pair of sisters discover that Daniel might be suffering a fate far worse than death while in its grasp.
We recently had the opportunity to catch up with Flanagan in anticipation of Absentia being honored...

Absentia
Directed by Mike Flanagan
Written by Mike Flanagan
2011, USA
Writer/director Mike Flanagan’s partially Kickstarter-funded feature debut is without a doubt one of the best independent films of the year, an instant indie gem from a director to watch out for. The film’s title is Latin for “in the absence,” and is a legal declaration stating that a person is considered deceased if they’ve disappeared for an extended period of time. Seven years after her husband went missing, Tricia can’t give up hope that he’ll one day return and continues her search. Her sister Callie comes to visit, hoping to get her to finally declare him dead in absentia. As Tricia tries her best to finally move on with her life, Callie discovers an ominous tunnel nearby. Strange things start happening both in the house and in the old tunnel down the street. Slowly...

Absentia is a ghost story from director Mike Flanagan, which has received praise from many film critics. Toby McCasker at Fangoria has called the film disturbing and terrifying and now, Phase 4 Films will be making this title available through a video-on-demand feature July 1st, 2011. As a sidebar, why is this format called video-on-demand, when the delivery comes via digital? The film industry continues to mystify this reviewer. Meanwhile, a wife tries to move on from her unhappy marriage, as her husband has been missing for seven years. Are those strange sounds coming from a recess in Tricia's backyard her husband saying goodbye, or something much more sinister? Fans will have to watch this film July 1st to find out, when Absentia becomes available through various cable providers.
The synopsis for Absentia is here:

Mike Flanagan’s Absentia is one of those rare treats you find in indie film. The film focuses on two sisters Callie (Katie Parker) and Tricia (Courtney Bell) who reunite and are both dealing with some personal issues. What’s going on here is Tricia is dealing with the loss of her husband Daniel (Morgan Peter Brown) from seven years ago who suddenly reappears and Callie just can't stay in one place too long and is trying to stay away from the bottle, from what I understand.
The events that take place throughout the film lead to a dark journey for all parties involved, especially the two sisters. Remember the book “Billy Goats Gruff”? Yeah, let’s just say instead of a bridge there’s a tunnel and there’s something in the tunnel! But what? Well, I can tell you that Doug Jones (Hellboy, Legion, Pan’s Labyrinth) is...

I ran across Mike Flanagan's Absentia on Facebook a while back and we've been following it ever since. This is what we call "the little film that could". It's a Kick Starter funded project that has actually made it to the finish line and it looks like it's going to be a killer movie, judging by the poster, images below and trailer . The film stars Katie Parker, Courtney Bell, David Levine, Morgan Brown, Justin Gordon, James Flanagan, and everybody's favorite Abe Sapien and friend of GeekTyrant, Doug Jones. Check out the new images below courtesy of Dread Central.

Since the art of filmmaking has become accessible to the point of being able to make a movie in your own home on your PC or Mac, there has been a deluge of indie flicks hitting the market in various forms. Unfortunately, most miss a lot more than they hit, but every once in a while an indie movie will come along with just the right amount of everything and it makes the search for these gems all the more worth it. Case in point ...
We had the opportunity to screen Absentia (review here) recently, and believe us when we tell you it's like a breath of fresh air. Proof positive that with a good director and cast and a smart script, you do not need a massive budget to make a good movie. In fact, Absentia is one of the few fan-funded via Kickstarter flicks that we've come across to actually get made.

We begin with a Missing Person poster, brown with age, torn and hanging from its place on a telephone pole being replaced by a new, fresh version. A sad, pregnant woman with a bag full of posters moves onto the next spot and repeats the ritual. The man has been missing for seven years and something is very wrong with this picture.
It is a beautifully shot introduction, showing rather than telling us the story before us, and with Absentia director Mike Flanagan has created a genuinely haunting film, an intelligent, modern horror story which evokes unease with some inspired visuals and a tight narrative brought to life by a compelling cast.
It’s the kind of film you want all budding filmmakers to end up with – something tangible, original and effective, one which blows the competition, saddled with soaring budgets and low audience expectation, out of the water. It...

This month has been one of the best that I can remember for trailers. All the studios were desperate for their trailer to get released before the Christmas holidays and we were inundated with posts. Since I love trailers so much, the inundation was most welcome. In what I am considering making a monthly post, here’s a roundup of all the trailers so far for December which I have embedded below for your viewing pleasure!
I’ve embedded them in the order in which they were released start December 1st to 31st and if I miss any, please let me know and I’ll update the post.
I really want this to be intereactive so make sure you tell us which trailers you liked the best and which you think will be great or terrible movies from what you’ve seen! So, let’s go!
