Fox, Bento Box and Hasbro’s Entertainment One (eOne) are developing an animated series based on the iconic board game, Clue.
Clue, which was originally called Murder!, was invented by Englishman Anthony E. Pratt and launched in 1949. Pratt created the game during WWII to pass the time during lengthy air raid drills. Since its debut, Clue has been introduced to more than 30 countries. The game, which has 324 different plots for players to solve, was adapted into a film in 1985 (pictured above) that featured three alternate versions, each with a different ending. Entertainment One has begun the process of sizing up which of Hasbro’s brands could be transformed into television or movie franchises after formally being acquired by the toymaker for $3.8 billion in January.
Pancho Mansfield, eOne’s president of global scripted programming, told Deadline that Hasbro has a “treasure chest” of IP that warrants investigation, and work is underway to establish what could be translated to the screen. “Sharp Objects” and “Run” producer-distributor Entertainment One is reassuring partners of its commitment to drama following its acquisition by toy giant Hasbro.
EOne has always cultivated a strong set of procedurals, such as ABC’s Nathan Fillion-starrer “The Rookie” and Fox’s Stephen Dorff-led “Deputy,” but has also gained traction with cable propositions such as HBO’s “Sharp Objects” and the forthcoming thriller “Run” from “Fleabag” creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who both produces and stars.
However, following Hasbro’s shock $3.8 billion all-cash deal for the business – an acquisition that made sense from a kids’ content perspective given eOne’s lucrative “Peppa Pig” franchise and “Pj Masks” property – alarm bells rang around eOne’s future prospects in scripted drama.
Now that the deal has closed, senior eOne TV execs – who last week hosted global buyers in London for the firm’s annual U.K. Screenings event – are assuaging fears about the company’s post-Hasbro pipeline,...

During an Emerging Studios panel at the Atx Television Fest, TV executives from several smaller independent studios — Entertainment One, Blumhouse, Annapurna and Miramax — discussed competing with major independent studios like Sony TV and Warner Bros TV as well as with vertically integrated studios like 20th TV, Universal TV, CBS TV Studios and ABC Studios.
One of the big takeaways was that the material is key to combating the obstacles faced by smaller companies.
“The challenge is a lot of the buyers would prefer not to have independent studios,” said Pancho Mansfield, President, Global Scripted Programming, eOne. “It’s a very competitive business. We need to have something that they have to have and that’s material.”
Said Miramax TV president Lauren Whitney: “Our place and our security come from having an IP and having ideas that are special and that people want. As long as we have those and we control them,...

Living in the era of peak TV, there’s more content to choose from than ever before. With broadcast TV, cable, and streaming services all competing for the audience’s attention, some studios are finding new and innovative ways to do so.
At the Atx Television Festival’s Emerging Studios panel Friday, four executives gathered to share their thoughts on how the peak TV era is changing the medium from their perspective. Blumhouse’s Marci Wiseman, Annapurna’s Ali Krug, Miramax’s Lauren Whitney, and eOne’s Pancho Mansfield were all on hand to discuss television’s current Renaissance, as well as the challenges and opportunities it’s providing.
“In a universe where channels are meaningless to the viewer, the opportunity for independent studios is to be brand-focused,” Wiseman explained. She’s been using Blumhouse’s notoriety for making horror films that are low in budget but high in creative...

The first episode of the HBO’s adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s Sharp Objects made its world premiere tonight to a packed house at the Paramount Theatre at the Atx Television Festival. With Flynn’s signature twisted storytelling skills, it left the audience with a feeling of fascinating uneasiness which, in its own way, a good thing — particularly for female-driven narratives.
After the screening, Flynn was joined on the stage by star/executive producer Amy Adams, showrunner Marti Noxon, director/executive producer Jean-Marc Vallée, executive producer Jason Blum as well as David Levine and Pancho Mansfield. Flynn, who is known best for the similarly haunting Academy Award-nominated thriller Gone Girl, pointed out that there are plenty of stories about how men handle violence and rage — but none about women.
“No one wants to hear this kind of story,” said Flynn.

In a little town in Georgia, July 11 is “Amy Adams Day.”
“I liked it there,” Adams said of Barnesville, Ga, the town about an hour south of Atlanta that recently hosted the production of “Sharp Objects,” HBO’s new limited series.
“I’m sturdy,” she added.
Though director Jean-Marc Vallee won’t be going back any time soon — “With all the bugs? It was the worst!” — his was the only disparaging remark to be heard when the cast and creators discussed the upcoming adaptation. Following the worldwide premiere, the Atx Festival held a panel featuring Adams, director Vallee, author and executive producer Gillian Flynn, showrunner Marti Noxon, producer Jason Blum, eOne president Pancho Mansfield, and HBO co-drama head David Levine. Most of their comments focused on how enriching the project was, especially as a story about a “complicated [female] lead.”
