Oprah Winfrey apologized for being a “major contributor” to America’s toxic diet culture. During an event hosted by Weight Watchers on Thursday, Winfrey took responsibility for promoting unhealthy weight loss methods and expressed regret for profiting from diet culture in her shows.
“I have been a steadfast participant in this diet culture. Through my platforms, through the magazine, through the talk show for 25 years and online . . . I’ve been a major contributor to it,” Winfrey stated. “I cannot tell you how many weight-loss shows and makeovers I have done, and they have been a staple since I’ve been working in television.”
“I’ve shared how that famous ‘wagon of fat’ moment on the Oprah show is one of my biggest regrets. It sent a message that starving yourself with a liquid diet, set a standard for people watching that I nor anybody else could uphold,” she said.

Oprah Winfrey said that she owns the “major role” she played in modern diet culture, saying she has taken time to process her own shame and now wants to support her audience in their own shift toward healthier mindsets.
“I wanted to gather all of us together because I believe that we have reached a pivotal moment in the way we talk about and the way we think about our bodies,” Winfrey told her in-person and virtual audience during Thursday’s Weight Watcher YouTube live special.

Following their decision to step down from their roles within the royal family, Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, moved to America.
They initially stayed at a waterfront property in Canada’s Vancouver Island before relocating to the States in Meghan’s hometown of Los Angeles. The duke and duchess resided in Beverly Hills at Tyler Perry’s mansion for a while but then moved again and eventually settled in the town of Montecito in Santa Barbara County. They now live in an 18,000-square-foot mansion nicknamed “The Chateau.” The home sits on five acres of land and has both ocean and mountain views. Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren didn’t mince any words. “CEO pay is out of control,” she posted on April 22, singling out Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, whose team has had a rocky road integrating two companies since the mega-merger that created the Hollywood conglomerate, dealing with a high debt load and shoring up profits. Zaslav “made $49.7 million last year, +26% from 2022 — despite layoffs, box office bombs, a lagging stock price,” Warren wrote on X. “Meanwhile, WB workers had to strike for higher pay.”
The latest annual executive pay disclosure season, which is now wrapped up, is unlikely to change the views of critics like Warren. Hollywood CEOs struggled with a plethora of challenges in 2023 — from the dual writers’ and actors’ strikes, cord-cutting, and a soft advertising market to a battle for streaming profits and M&a chatter, with the remedy often being layoffs, cost reductions and cutbacks in spending. It was a year of pain for the entertainment industry and shareholders of (many) media companies with months-long Hollywood strikes and layoffs. Linear television continued to decline and a nascent theatrical recovery went sideways. Most CEOs saw pay packages rise in 2023, some by big multiples.
“The pay is egregious, but it is something we have learned to accept,” says one longtime entertainment analyst.
Irritants cited: CEOs rewarded for deals before its clear how they’ll pan out; CEOs who should looking for growth but keep cutting; CEO pay packages that feel disproportionate to the size of the company. Paramount Global’s (now ex) CEO Bob Bakish saw compensation of $31 million, a hair lower than Disney’s Bob Iger in his first year back as chief executive. (See CEO pay chart below right)
Bakish may also be entitled to severance in the neighborhood of $48.5 million after being ejected earlier this week,...

Charter Communications saw its Spectrum TV customer base dip by 392,000 accounts during the first three months of the year, the company revealed in its quarterly earnings report early Friday morning.
The figure showed an acceleration of so-called “cord-cutting” at Spectrum TV compared to the first quarter (Q1) of 2023, when Charter reported a loss of 237,000 core video subscribers.
Charter ended Q1 with around 13.1 million pay TV customers, including those who are on the company’s relatively-new Spectrum TV Select plans.
A troubling trend of broadband erosion also continued at Charter, with 72,000 Spectrum Internet customers leaving for other services, including fixed-wireless products like T-Mobile Home Internet and Verizon Home Internet. Charter is not alone: Earlier in the week, peer telecom Comcast also reported a drop in land-based broadband customers as competition among fixed-wireless broadband providers heats up.

Cable and broadband giant Charter Communications has seen its losses of pay TV customers quicken as it reported its first-quarter results Friday.
The company, led by president and CEO Chris Winfrey, shed 392,000 residential video customers during the latest quarter, which compared to a year-earlier decline of 237,000 subscribers. Charter had 13.1 million pay TV subscribers at the end of March 31, 2024 after the company introduced its Xumo streaming platform joint venture involving Comcast to stem the loss of video customers amid continuing cable cord-cutting in the U.S. market.
First-quarter revenue at Charter was virtually unchanged at $13.67 billion, compared with a year-earlier $13.65 billion, which met analyst expectations for the latest quarter. Net income attributable to Charter shareholders rose 8.4 percent to $1.1 billion, or $7.75 per share, compared with $6.65 in earnings per share in the first quarter of 2023.

Winfrey said: “I’ve never been to a therapist because I had so many on the show, but my real therapy came from downloading whatever was happening in the day with Gayle every night.”
The personality and King supported each other throughout the early years of their careers, reports femalefirst.co.uk.
The TV icon told people.com: “There wasn’t a day that we missed being on some kind of phone call talking about what had happened in our days.”

Raven-Symoné is clarifying a headline-making comment she made in 2014.
On Tuesday, the former Disney Channel star shared a new episode of her podcast Tea Time With Raven and Miranda, in which she recalled receiving hate a decade ago for telling Oprah Winfrey that she doesn’t consider herself to be “African American.”
“A lot of people on the internet thought I said that I wasn’t Black, and I never said that,” the former child star told her co-host and wife, Miranda Maday.
When asked by Maday what she meant, the That’s So Raven alum said, “When I say that ‘African-American’ doesn’t align with me, that label, it doesn’t mean that I’m negating my Blackness or I’m not Black. It means I am from this country. I was born here.”

In Oprah Winfrey’s newest television special Shame, Blame, and the Weight Loss Revolution, the celebrated television host tells the crowd that when she got over the excitement of first appearing on the cover of TV Guide, she noticed a demeaning headline referencing her weight. “Bumpy, lumpy, and downright dumpy,” the magazine read. That sentiment would be echoed in the hateful and rude treatment, Winfrey said, that has followed her throughout her career.
“I took on the shame that the world gave to me,” Winfrey, 70, said in her newest special.

Whoopi Goldberg revealed Tuesday she used weight loss drug Mounjaro after weighing around 300 pounds when filming Till, which she starred in and produced. Goldberg joins a growing list of celebrities to speak openly about obesity drugs amid Oprah Winfrey’s ABC special which aired Monday.
Upon the film’s release in 2022, Goldberg took a moment to respond to a reporter’s claim she wore a fat suit to play the role. “I don’t really care how you felt about the movie,” she said at the time, “but you should know that was not a fat suit, that was me. That was steroids.”

Whoopi Goldberg and Sunny Hostin have joined Oprah Winfrey in speaking out about using weight loss medications, with Goldberg saying she made the decision after hitting almost 300 pounds during the filming of the 2022 film Till.
“I weighed almost 300 pounds when I was made Till,” Goldberg said during the Hot Topics segment of today’s The View on ABC.
See video below.
Goldberg had suffered severe back pain in 2021 and was treated with steroids as part of her recovery, leading to weight gain. Goldberg starred in the 2022 film Till, about the murder of Emmett Till.
“I had taken all those steroids and was on all this stuff,” she said today, “and one of the things that helps me drop the weight is Mounjaro.” (Mounjaro is a prescription weight loss medication similar to Ozempic.)

Angela Bassett is still explaining her reaction to losing at last year’s Oscars, a take that went viral in the ensuing days.
In a new interview with Oprah Winfrey, Bassett spoke about her Best Supporting Actress performance as Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Bassett was the first actor in any category to receive an Oscar nomination for a performance in a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie. Bassett won a Critics’ Choice Award and a Golden Globe for Wakanda Forever, so there was some anticipation of a victory at the Oscars.
Jamie Lee Curtis won the award for her work in Everything Everywhere All at Once. “I thought I handled it very well, and that was my intention: to handle it very well,” Bassett said. “It was, of course, a supreme disappointment, and disappointment is human, so yes, I was disappointed, and I handled it like a human being.

Charter Communications president and CEO Chris Winfrey has responded to a planned sports streaming joint venture from Disney, Fox Corp. and Warner Bros. Discovery set to offer live linear channels, such as ESPN, ABC, Fox, TNT and TBS, games and other sports rights from all three companies on a nonexclusive basis.

Expected to launch in the fall, in time for the NFL season, the sports streaming joint venture will be available directly to consumers, but also as a bundle with Wbd’s Max, as well as Disney’s ESPN+ and Hulu.

The chief executive of Charter Communications Christopher Winfrey saw total compensation last year of just over $89 million, inflated by $75 million in option awards.
Winfrey was promoted to CEO, from COO, in December of 2022, succeeding Tom Rutledge, who stayed on as executive chair until retiring last November and received a package worth $19 million for 2023 (down from $39 million the previous year).
Winfrey had a base salary of $1.7 million, stock awards of $8.7 million and non-equity incentive plan compensation (cash bonus) of $3.5 million. His pay last year totaled $15.6 million.
The options vest over time and with stock price hurdles. Charter’s proxy statement filed with the SEC said the lowest for Winfrey’s awards is $564. The shares closed Monday at $279, down from a 52-week high of $458 in a difficult time for media and traditional cable bundles. Charter Communications CEO Chris Winfrey received a compensation package worth $89 million in 2023, up significantly from a $15.6 million package he received in 2022. Last year was Winfrey’s first full year as CEO of the cable giant, taking over at the end of 2022.
A Securities and Exchange Commission filing issued March 4 by Charter indicated Winfrey’s base salary for 2023 was $1.7 million, up from a year-earlier $1.35 million.
The bulk of Winfrey’s overall pay was in option awards, with the executive receiving $75 million in option awards, after taking home $12 million in 2020. He also received $8.7 million in stock awards, and $3.5 million in non-equity incentive plan comp.
Winfrey’s overall pay is tied to Charter’s new 5-year performance-based equity program for executive officers, which has yardsticks like stock performance and time-based vesting criteria to ensure compensation reflects share price gains for investors.

Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, is known for her glamourous looks at the events.
She is often photographed wearing jewels and costly clothes, but she recently decided to bring her fashion choices down just a notch.
Meghan and her husband, Prince Harry, just finished a trip to Canada for their Invictus Games Foundation, which included plenty of trendy fashions, many of which were seen on television in interviews.
Now that she is back in California, Meghan was spotted having lunch with Clare Waight Keller, a former Givenchy employee at the fancy Cipriani in Beverly Hills.
She was wearing what Britsh Vogue called a “Teddy Bear” outfit, which included a black turtleneck by Bleusalt, Ulla Johnson trousers, and a Max Mara coat.
The outfit is befitting a princess and would look great anywhere, even inside a palace, let alone for a fancy lunch at Cipriani.

Russell Simmons has been sued for defamation for allegedly trying to undermine sexual assault accusations made against him.
Drew Dixon, a former Def Jam Recordings executive who alleges she was raped by the music mogul in 1995, claims in a lawsuit filed on Thursday in New York’s state Supreme Court that Simmons engaged in a “concerted and malicious campaign to discredit” her with the aim of undercutting her rape accusations. Among other statements, Simmons said in an interview on a podcast in December, “Could someone want notoriety in the market where people thirst for fame” and “I’ve never been forceful in any of my relationships,” all of which were “consensual.”
The complaint was filed on the heels of another suit against Simmons for sexual assault and battery from an ex-executive at the label he cofounded, who sued as a Jane Doe.
