Pavement had so many amazing moments in their historic four-night run in Brooklyn. But one of the funniest came on Sunday night, after the legendary Nineties indie jesters took a ramshackle stab at “Spit on a Stranger.” Stephen Malkmus shrugged and told the crowd, “That was a version of that song.” A typically bitchy quip — but it also showed off the band’s brazen confidence. All four nights in Brooklyn’s Kings Theater, Pavement didn’t just go back to those gold soundz — they took them somewhere new. And all...

After dominating the sixth annual Makeup and Hairstyling Guild Awards, “Bombshell” is the Oscar frontrunner for transforming an unrecognizable John Lithgow into late, disgraced Fox News CEO Roger Ailes and producer/star Charlize Theron as former anchor Megyn Kelly. Oscar winner Kazu Hiro (“Darkest Hour”) once again does amazing work.
Yet the challenges and obstacles were so great that Hiro and the team were required to push the limits of their craft. That’s because Lithgow and Theron don’t very much resemble Ailes and Kelly. And while the strategy for transforming Lithgow was not a precise recreation, Theron wanted to look as much like Kelly as possible. The best solution for Lithgow involved individual pieces for the neck, cheeks, nose, and earlobes. Hiro also shaved the hairline back for Morgan to take over with necessary coloring and alteration. For Theron, a nose plug and tip were important, and, additionally,...

Good morning!
Out actress Jasika Nicole guest stars on Scandal tonight and it looks like she's someone's mother.
Eden Riegel's sister is a lesbian. I didn't know! She said her sis doesn't inform her All My Children character Bianca, though:
She doesn't advise me at all. She totally gave me permission to make the role my own.
I'd like her to make a cameo at a lesbian bar scene.
Voyeurs, want to check out Naya Rivera's home? She's selling this Beverly Hills bungalow to move to Los Feliz, where all the cool kids are.
Baz Luhrmann has always known how to put together a soundtrack. I mean, Romeo & Juliet, Moulin Rouge — those were full of the best music from films or otherwise. He's doing it again with The Great Gatsby, which includes...

Kathleen Hanna and Kathi Wilcox have been friends since the two played in Bikini Kill, the riot grrl band that took the '90s by storm. Twenty years later, the two play together in The Julie Ruin, and are currently recording an eagerly anticipated album with James Murphy from LCD Soundsystem.
Because we've had a longstanding musical love affair with Hanna and Wilcox since the days when they wore t-shirts as skirts, we decided to test their mettle and play the Friendship Game with them (despite the fact that our interviewing skills rival Ricky Bobby's). In the game, each player has to guess the other's response to a series of questions; the winner receives a prize that proves her devotion to her beloved friend.
Who will win the friendship test, and who will fail, hanging her head in shame? Are Kathleen and Kathi merely two ships passing in the night,...

One of the best things about the Portland/DC-based band Wild Flag is their amazing interpersonal dynamic and chemistry. This is why HuffPost Arts decided to take a chance and interview Mary Timony (guitar + vocals) and Rebecca Cole (keys) about the solidity of their friendship in order to discover what makes a band last. Before their recent performance at Webster Hall in New York, my friend Laura Fisher and I quizzed Mary and Rebecca on how well they know each other, in the spirit of "The Newlywed Game."
Who will win the friendship test, and who will fail, hanging her head in shame? Are Rebecca and Mary merely two ships passing in the night, or is their friendship built to weather the trials and tribulations of a band on tour? You can find out the results in the video above.

As is the case every year, I start reading year-end lists posted by trusted peers/journalists and discover I've missed plenty of deserving culture. With the glut of films, music, theater, TV shows, books, et al. on numerous websites, TV screens, bookshelves, and periodicals, it's fairly easy. Truth be told, in addition to P.J. Harvey's much-deserved kudos, other women singers/songwriters/bands really stepped up their game this year, making many top ten year-end lists, and I missed out on discovering some of them. With that in mind, here's some additions to my 2011 year's end list.

I may live in Portland, Oregon now, but when I first saw Portlandia, I was a Chicagoan — and I loved the show. In fact, I've been a fan of Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen's collaborative comedy since they were called ThunderAnt with a website and some videos, including the feminist bookstore sketch they recreated for their hit IFC series.
In ThunderAnt videos, the plot wasn't Portland-specific, but neither is Portlandia, really, which is why the show has been so successful. The characters Carrie and Fred play are everywhere, and they are people you don't see highlighted as often on television, even on Fred's other gig at Saturday Night Live. Portlandia is the place where the feminist bookstore workers can co-exist with bearded bicycle messengers and overzealous organic farm-to-table eaters and a mayor who prefers sitting on an exercise ball to an office chair. That's Portland, yes, but it's also...

Finally, a supergroup that’s actually super. For those who thought Mister Heavenly was good-not-great, Them Crooked Vultures were disappointing and Monsters of Folk were positively sleep-inducing, enter Wild Flag. Two parts Sleater-Kinney (Carrie Brownstein and Janet Weiss), one part Helium (Mary Timony), one part The Minders (Rebecca Cole) and many parts other various bands these ladies have been involved in during the past couple decades (Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks, Quasi, Autoclave, Excuse 17, etc.), the Portland/Washington D.C. foursome sounds utterly, unfuckwittably fierce on paper alone....

Wild Flag delighted me during the Merge showcase at SXSW earlier this year, and I have a feeling they'll delight you, too, with "Romance." The rock track is culled from the band's forthcoming self-titled debut, due Sept. 12. But these women are no strangers to the indie-rock world. The group is comprised of Carrie Brownstein, Mary Timony, Rebecca Cole and Janet Weiss; the first and last of those were one-third of now-defunct Sleater-Kinney. Mary Timony, of course, helped head up Helium. Cole was in The Minders. They initially came together for music to Sundance pick "!Women Art Revolution" and continued to write,...

Wild Flag have announced that their highly anticipated self-titled debut will be available Sept. 13. The band will play a handful of summer dates before embarking on a fall tour in support of the album. Fronted by Portlandia co-star and former Sleater-Kinney singer Carrie Brownstein, the all-female four-piece is rounded out by former Sleater-Kinney drummer Janet Weiss, former Helium singer Mary Timony and former Minders keyboardist Rebecca Cole. The riot grrrl supergroup has gained attention for its performance at this year’s SXSW as well as for the Future Crimes / Glass Tambourine 7" released on Record Store Day....

This Saturday is every vinyl addict's favorite holiday: Record Store Day. On April 16th, music fans across the country will perform a simple act that in the digital age is becoming increasingly rare: Go to their local record store and buy music. What once started as a small annual celebration of independent record stores, Record Store Day has blossomed into a full-fledged musical celebration of the local music shop. Bands of all sizes and statures are offering limited edition albums, playing intimate shows, and giving fans future relics all in a show of solidarity with record stores.
Need some inspiration to dole out some cash? Buzzfeed has put together a depressing collection of old record store photos. See them and weep here. Now, ready to do your part? Head to Record Store Day's official website to find participating stores and on April 16th start shopping.

The biggest buzz at the SXSW Music Festival may have been that Carrie Brownstein is back. Sure she's never really been gone, but the guitarist and singer has been busy working on a little show called Portlandia and hasn't had the time to hit the stage with her trademark thrashing and explosive sound. Now the Sleater-Kinney guitarist has teamed up with Sleater-Kinney drummer Janet Weiss, Helium singer-guitarist Mary Timony and Minders keyboardist Rebecca Cole to form a new band called Wild Flag. The indie-rock supergroup played shows all over Austin during at SXSW wowing fans with their heavy psychedelic pop songs. Despite not having an album out yet, fans of the group were already able to shout along with the group's songs. While Wild Flag were playing shows at a relentless pace during SXSW, they made time to stop at IFC's Crossroads House.
