It is sad how ill-informed our media is! The coverage of the passing away of legendary ghazal singer, Pankaj Udhas, demonstrates this lack of information and research. The credit for Pankaj’s fame is attributed mainly to one film song, ‘Chitthi aayee hai…’ from ‘Naam’. The film was released in 1986 by which time Pankaj had become a hugely popular ghazal singer, second only to the veteran Jagjit Singh. But then, Jagjit Singh had a head start.
By 1986, Pankaj had quite a few silver, gold and platinum discs to his credit. These discs were awarded by the music companies on an album achieving a certain milestone in sales. Ghazals were initially a choice of certain discerning music lovers.
But Pankaj had a varied repertoire and his numbers such as ‘Ghungroo toot gaye’, ‘Sharab cheez hi aisi hai’, ‘Chandi jaisa rang’ and ‘Niklo na benaqab’ carried a definite appeal for the masses.

Have you ever been to a wedding where, right in the middle of the festivities, the lights go off? That’s how it felt at the end of Jee Karda. A wedding, the photogenic Tamannaah Bhatia’s wedding, had just taken place and she was figuring out whether she was fit for spousedom or not when the serial ended abruptly, hoping to keep us hooked until the next season.
While some of the characters do have potential to hop and skip into a second season, others are just plain human embodiments of animalistic selfindulgence. They do what they like. They treat their partners like disposable diapers.
And though the seven friends played by Tamannaah Bhatia, Aashim Gulati, Suhail Nayyar, Anya Singh, Hussain Dalal, Sayan Banerjee, and Samvedna Suwalka , speak endlessly about commitment and honesty in relationships, they seem trapped in a writers’ block.

As far as Ghazal and Bhajan singer Anoop Jalota is concerned, Pakistan's Ghazal maestro Ghulam Ali's decision to stay away from India is only befitting, and the need of the hour. Speaking on the Ghazal maestro's decision to cancel all his concerts in India, Anoop Jalota said exclusively to this writer, "He (Ghulam Ali) is following my decision. I never sang in Pakistan, never did any concerts there as a matter of policy. Now he has decided to stay away from India out of fear, strangely after singing in India for last 35 years without any mishap." Anoop Jalota's sarcasm is not misplaced. A lot of musicians in the Indian entertainment industry secretly feel the atmosphere in India is not conducive to a free-wheeling give-and-take of talent. For every Gulzar who has visited Pakistan and come back raving over the hospitality there is an Anoop Jalota who thinks it's...

Today, as Abhishek Bachchan grows a year older and pretends to be much older than he really is, I think back to the day almost two years in April 2011 when he came to my home in Patna. At around 6 pm when Abhishek taken off his shoes and had plonked himself comfortably on the floor in our house and we were all bitching about the whole industry, a neatly dressed man walked straight in and requested for a picture.I presumed he was part of Abhishek’s extended entourage of security guards, publicity co-ordinators and photographers. It turned out to be a man from the street who had slipped past the tight security, walked confidently up the four flights of stairs to our top floor, got his picture and walked out.
