Tuesday would have been the first day of production on the sci-fi sequel “Tron: Ares,” but the film, like so much else in Hollywood, is now on hold indefinitely, said director Joachim Rønning lamented the “extremely frustrating” situation” on Tuesday.
“Today was supposed to be our first day of principal photography on Tron: Ares. Instead, we are shut down with over a hundred and fifty people laid off. It’s indefinite, which makes it exponentially harder for everyone,” Rønning wrote on Instagram.
He continued, “The AMPTP, SAG-AFTRA and WGA need to speed up the negotiating process and not leave the table until it’s done. This is Hollywood. We close deals for breakfast. Why do we suddenly have all the time in the world when every day is so precious? These tactics are extremely frustrating. It’s time for diplomacy so we can get back to work – under conditions that are fair to everybody.

Evan Peters, who starred as Quicksilver in Fox’s “X-Men” prequel series and earned acclaim playing Jeffrey Dahmer in Ryan Murphy’s blockbuster “Monster” Netflix miniseries, has joined the cast of Disney’s long-gestating “Tron: Ares,” an individual with knowledge told TheWrap on Wednesday.
Peters will star alongside Jared Leto in the sci-fi threequel helmed by Joachim Rønning, which will hopefully begin shooting in August in Vancouver. Emma Ludbrook, Jeffrey Springer and Leto are producing. Russell Allen is executive producing.
The Walt Disney Company has been trying to make a follow-up to “Tron: Legacy” for over a decade. The first “Tron,” which earned two Academy Award nominations — but none for its then-groundbreaking special effects — earned just $50 million worldwide on a $17 million budget. That was seen as a disappointment in 1982 but built enough of a cult audience for Disney to roll the dice in 2010 with the $170 million budgeted “Tron: Legacy.”

Disney is taking The Little Mermaid fans under the sea for a first glimpse at Melissa McCarthy’s Ursula in its live-action remake.
In a 30-second teaser trailer of the film that dropped Wednesday, star Halle Bailey is seen performing her rendition of “Part of Your World,” as she twirls through underwater reefs and peeks out from behind ship wreckage.
But perhaps the trailer’s biggest moment — outside of a glimpse of Bailey and co-star Jonah Hauer-King’s Prince Eric’s near kiss on a boat — is its tease of McCarthy as the story’s beloved villain, Ursula. Toward the end of the spot, McCarthy’s bright eyes can be seen peeking out from behind a tentacle as the actress delivers her rendition of the character’s iconic laugh.
The reimagining of the animated 1989 Disney hit is directed by Rob Marshall, with a screenplay by Jane Goldman and David Magee from a story by Marshall.

Battered by the pandemic and the collapse of exhibition windows, the movie theater industry now has one more thing to worry about: a hike in the minimum wage.
The industry relies heavily on part-time workers who make at or near the local minimum rate. Cinema operators say that an increase to $15 an hour nationwide — which Democrats in Congress are pushing for — would make it much harder to turn a profit.
“That would kill us,” said Byron Berkley, owner of Foothills Entertainment in Kilgore, Tex., where workers make $8 an hour. “We couldn’t justify raising our admission prices and concession prices to compensate for that kind of increase and still expect people to patronize the business. It would be disastrous.”
Congressional Democrats want to raise the federal minimum from $7.25 an hour to $15 by 2025. Their plan would also phase out the minimum wage for tipped workers — currently $2.13 an hour — which would impact...

The Grand Theatre is one of those civic treasures that always seems to need saving.
It was built as an opera house in the tiny sawmill town of New London, Wis., in 1895. A century later, it was a run-down movie theater, desperate for a renovation.
The town’s voters agreed to tax themselves to restore it. But in 2010, the owner was still having a hard time turning a profit. That’s when Jim Billek stepped in.
Billek, who also owns two single-screen theaters in towns farther north, took over and has been running the place as a four-plex for the past nine years. But now, with the coronavirus outbreak, the Grand Cinema Theatres is in big trouble.
“I’m at the bottom of the totem pole,” Billek says. “If we don’t come up with something, we’re bankrupt.”

Disney has managed to retain furloughed employees from the set of its live-action remake of “The Little Mermaid” in the United Kingdom by utilizing the government’s Job Retention Scheme to partially pay their salaries, an individual with knowledge of the decision told TheWrap.
Executive producer Jeff Silver and production manager Russell Allen informed production staff on “The Little Mermaid” that furlough notices they received on Mar. 20 would be rescinded and that they would ultimately stay on staff. However, they will remain without work through the end of May unless production resumes before then or production does not proceed as planned.
Through the plan, companies affected by the coronavirus pandemic are eligible to receive funds to pay up to 80% of furloughed workers’ salaries, with a maximum of £2,500, or roughly $3,100, per month for each employee.

Exclusive: Disney has rehired and furloughed crew working on its UK production The Little Mermaid and will utilize the government’s Job Retention Scheme, meaning they will receive 80% of salary up to a maximum of £2,500 per month.
In email correspondence seen by Deadline, executive producer Jeff Shell and unit production manager Russell Allen notified production staff yesterday that it will rescind previous termination notices that were handed out on March 20 when it shut down all production until April 3; crew will still be paid in full until that date. The furlough will last until at least the end of May, unless shooting resumes or the production does not move forward as originally planned.
The move follows the UK government’s confirmation earlier this week that staff who were laid off since February 28 will be eligible for state-backed furlough if they are rehired by their previous employers.
The Little Mermaid, a live-action and CGI remake of the classic Disney movie, is being directed by Rob Marshall and has cast including Halle Bailey, Awkwafina, Javier Bardem and Melissa McCarthy.
Marvel pic Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness is another Disney set up in the UK, and is in pre-production ahead of a June shoot – it is not immediately clear if crew on that project are being furloughed.
Yesterday, Disney announced substantial pay cuts to high-level staff as it looks to weather the crisis, including chairman Bob Iger who will forego his salary and CEO Bob Chapek who will take a 50% cut. The studio has said it will continue to pay theme park staff until April 18 while the venues remain closed.
Deadline has reached out to Disney for further comment.
UK union Bectu also contacted its members today to notify them about Disney’s decision. The union said it has now written to nearly 300 film and TV production companies urging them to furlough Paye freelancers.
Head of Bectu Philippa Childs said: “Bectu welcomes Disney’s decision to furlough crew until the end of May when the government has said the Jrs will run until. Disney is taking its responsibilities as an employer seriously and this is model behaviour that the rest of the industry should be looking to follow.”
“We are calling on all production companies to do the same where they can and if cash flow is a problem to consider using the government’s Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan scheme. There are many Paye freelancers out there who have been waiting weeks for government help and one of their only options is to be furloughed. Employers must explore this option where possible to help alleviate the stress and anxiety that many are experiencing at the moment. Bectu will continue to highlight the range of hurdles freelancers and the self-employed are facing to qualify for financial support to the Treasury.”...
