San Diego Comic-Con is going to be a little different this year. Many studios had already dropped out of presenting, including Marvel, Sony, HBO, Universal, and Netflix, and now that SAG-AFTRA has joined the WGA on the picket lines, you can pretty much kiss any panel involving writers or actors goodbye. The official Comic-Con schedule has been updated with a list of cancelled panels, which unfortunately includes Dune: Part Two, The Boys spin-off series Gen V, Amazon’s The Wheel of Time, Lionsgate’s upcoming The Strangers trilogy, and more.

With the WGA currently picketing and a looming SAG-AFTRA strike already impacting San Diego Comic-Con with several film and TV companies, i.e. Marvel, Lucasfilm, Sony, Universal, Netflix skipping, Lord knows what a truncated and tamer Comic-Con is going to look like from July 19-23, especially after an explosive 2022 which repped the confab’s return to in-person after going dark for two years during Covid for 2020 and 2021. However, here’s a glimpse at the first 3-days. Some shows and movies have promised cast appearances, but that’s still Tbd given that the SAG-AFTRA contract expires on July 12, and actors aren’t permitted to promote their wares during a work stoppage. There are some big pieces of IP below, read the new Peacock John Wick spinoff series, The Continental and Paramount’s Seth Rogen produced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, as well as Jamie Lee Curtis, Tj Miller and...

"This is madness!" "No it's not!" Electric Entertainment has unveiled a trailer for an indie titled The Book of Love, formerly known as The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea when it first premiered. The story is about an introverted architect name Henry, played by Jason Sudeikis, who befriends a homeless teen and helps her build a boat. That sounds a bit weird, but obviously it's a quirky little indie drama about supporting the (crazy) dreams of others. Maisie Williams stars in this, with Jessica Biel, Mary Steenburgen, Paul Reiser, Orlando Jones and Joshua Mikel. This seems to be inspired a bit by the Kon-Tiki story, and it also reminds me of the real story of a girl who sailed around the world - as seen in Maidentrip. Check it out. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Bill Purple's The Book of Love, direct from Et's YouTube: Henry is an introverted architect.

The Book of Love is long and boring, according to Peter Gabriel, but it happens to be the new title for Bill Purple’s upcoming adventure drama starring Maisie Williams of Game of Thrones.
Originally called The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea, Purple’s original pic – one written by Robbie Pickering – enjoyed its worldwide debut at Tribeca back in April, and is now teetering on the verge of theatrical release. And so, to drum up excitement, Entertainment Tonight has today lifted the lid on the rousing first trailer for The Book of Love (see below), and in it we see Williams’ runaway teen Millie set sail with the help of reticent architect Henry (Jason Sudeikis).

There's a reason Jessica Biel is so convincing playing a woman about to give birth in her new indie drama The Book of Love—it's because she was about eight months pregnant when she shot the movie. "We had five days to shoot you or else you couldn't fly," Book of Love's director and co-writer Bill Purple said last night during a Q&A with Biel (and moderated by yours truly) at the New Orleans Film Festival. "It was a scary time." Biel laughed, "It was always good to be laying down at that point in my pregnancy." Purple added, "We shot in February and it was like 30 degrees. Our crew buried heaters under the ground to keep Jessica warm. I felt so bad. It was...

Two recent films are bound to come to viewers’ minds while watching Bill Purple’s feature debut “The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea,” one more obvious than the other. The less obvious point of comparison is “Demolition,” Jean-Marc Vallée’s recent seriocomic examination of a man’s eccentric (to put it mildly) expressions of his grief over his wife’s sudden death. Though the grieving husband in Purple’s film, Henry (Jason Sudeikis), doesn’t have the same obsession with destroying physical objects in order to better understand their inner workings as Davis (Jake Gyllenhaal) in Vallée’s film does, Henry — also a successful middle-class type with a penchant for caution that is shattered by his personal loss — similarly finds himself developing a mania that seems crazy to most outside his usual circles: an obsession with helping a homeless girl, Millie (Maisie Williams), fulfill her dream of building a...

Can't movie characters grieve with dignity anymore? In the recent Demolition, Jake Gyllenhaal coped with his wife's death by literally taking apart everything he could put his hands on, including his house. And in Bill Purple's feature directorial debut, a distraught widower copes with his wife's death by befriending a homeless teen urchin and helping her to build a raft to sail out to sea. Whatever happened to good old-fashioned drinking yourself into a stupor? Screaming its faux poeticism with its very title, The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea stars Jason Sudeikis, making an unfortunate stab at stretching

Fans pining for more Justin Timberlake music, rejoice. The "Sexy Back" singer has signed on to provide the soundtrack for "The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea," THR reports.
The film (the title of which is just one word away from a George Harrison song but sounds deceptively like a Bright Eyes track) is set to start shooting later this year. Bill Purple will direct Jeffrey Dean Morgan, it-girl Chloe Moretz and Justin Timberlake's longtime love Jessica Biel. Biel and Timberlake are supposedly tying the knot this summer.
It's a tale of some New Orleans natives who build a raft to cross the Atlantic after Morgan's character loses his wife. Timberlake will also serve as music superviser, per THR.

Timberlake's involvement was part of the film's announcement this week at Cannes, according to reports. The 31-year-old will compose the score for the feature, as well as working as music supervisor, choosing other artists' songs for the soundtrack.
The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea, due to start shooting later this year, follows the story of a widower and a young girl who build a raft to sail across the Atlantic.
