After working together in the live-action version of “City Hunter”, Jackie Chan and Wong Jing had a falling out in which Chan went on to disown the film as well as attack Wong through the press. In return Wong, had a go at Chan through this action comedy starring Jacky Cheung as a fraud who is a cowardly womanizing action star dressed in a yellow jumpsuit. In addition, he also had a field day spoofing just about most if not all of the Hollywood’s action films imaginable.

The film kicks off with a bunch of school kids trapped inside a bus with a time bomb ticking away, while Kit Li (Jet Li) is trying desperately to disarm it. Although he manages to cut the right wire, the bomb still goes off a few seconds later killing all the kids including his wife and son.

Netflix released a trailer for Season 6 of “Nailed It!,” which premieres Sept. 15.
In the new season, the bakers face even tougher challenges than ever before, including making paranormal pastries, celebrating Black history by creating edible versions of historical icons, and recreating chocolate masterpieces inspired by judge and chocolatier Jacques Torres.
The trailer, which you can watch below, begins with host Nicole Byer playing with edible versions of herself, Torres and assistant director Weston Bahr as she gears up to have the contestants create pastries in their likeness for a competition.
“I just love seeing the misfortune of others,” says actor Jack McBrayer, who appears as a contestant this season. Naturally, this line of dialogue is followed by him making a mistake of his own while baking.
While McBrayer is the only celebrity contestant this season, celebrity judge in Season 6 include Wayne Brady, Sam Richardson, Reggie Watts, Big Freedia, June Diane Raphael and Sasheer Zamata.

Probably one of the least known works of Yonfan, “Immortal Story” is a film that exemplifies love and its complexity, as much as Macao.
Mei Ling is an orphan girl with a great voice living in Macao, who depends on her aunt to make decisions for her. Her only friend is a kid named Le Wen Chi, who seems to idolize her, but also has a tendency for stealing. Eventually he finds a wallet and they decide to return it to Chung Chuen, a rich foreigner who is staying in the place with some colleagues. When Chung visits the restaurant Mei Ling is performing, he falls in love with her and the feeling is mutual. However, he eventually has to leave, and Mei Ling, despite having his address, decides not to ever write him, wary of the difference in social status.
After some years, she meets Pak Lan, an owner...

Throughout the history of Hong Kong Cinema there have always been those performers that have deservedly become stars. At the same time there are those that it is unfathomable how they did not become bigger stars, with as much talent and skills as their more famous counterparts. For every Jackie Chan, Donnie Yen or Chow Yun Fat there is a Chin Siu Ho, Fan Siu Wong or Yu Rong-Guang. One of my favourite of these performers, and someone who should have become a bigger star is Elvis Tsui Kam Kom. Instantly recognisable to fans of Hong Kong cinema, Tsui has appeared in over 130 films and television series throughout his varied career. Perhaps sometimes guilty of being over the top, he has still managed to...

My original plan was to publish a list of my ten most anticipated films screening at the Fantasia Film Festival but considering the incredible line-up this year, I find it near impossible to narrow it down to only ten. So instead I’ve decided to select one movie a day, or better yet, the movie that you should choose if you only had time for one.
Day 1. Tangerine
Christmas Eve in Tinseltown!
If you’re not familiar with director Sean Baker start taking notes. The man is a genius and one of the best indie American filmmakers working today. In Starlet, Baker spun an unlikely friendship between a young porn actress and an old lady in the San Fernando Valley. In Prince of Broadway, he chronicled the struggles of a hustler balancing fatherhood while working in New York’s wholesale district. Baker’s work avoids labels by refusing to adhere...

This may be the greatest film ever made. Riki Oh is an adaptation of an ultra violent manga that ran from 1983 to 1990, the book was adapted to the screen by Lam Ngai-choi, the depraved madman responsible for Cat III legends The Cat and Seventh Curse. Riki Oh may not be as balls-out insane as those films, but it certainly trumps them in terms of gore and one on one violence. A very young Fan Siu Wong (Ip Man 1 & 2) takes the lead role and plays a sort of murderous romantic vigilante, trying to rid the prison in which he's been locked up of corruption. The ensuing fights are legendary and put Riki Oh on a pedestal as one of the most...

Ching Siu Tung and Tsui Hark’s 1987 immortal classic of Hong Kong cinema “A Chinese Ghost Story” returns to screens in a new version with “Ip Man” series director Wilson Yip at the helm. Wisely, although a remake, the film makes an effort to do something a little different with the original Liaozhai source material, staying true to its themes whilst taking a different approach to its characters and their relationships. Unsurprisingly, the highly anticipated film was a major blockbuster release, boasting extensive special effects work from a top Korean team, and an all star cast headed by popular leading man Louis Koo (“Don’t go Breaking my Heart”), Liu Yifei, (“The Forbidden Kingdom”) and Yu Shaoqun, (“Shaolin”), with support from veteran Kara Hui (who featured in many Shaw Brothers hits such as “Legendary Weapons of China”), Fan Siu Wong (“Ip Man”), and, most excitingly, old school Hong Kong genre...

Given the huge success of “Ip Man”, it was inevitable that audiences would soon be hit not only by an official sequel, but by all manner of spinoffs. And so, fast on the heels of “Ip Man 2” comes “The Legend is Born – Ip Man”, a prequel charting the early years of the Wing Chun grandmaster to be. Thankfully, the reins were handed to Herman Yau, surely one of Hong Kong’s best and most underappreciated directors, known for consistently churning out works of quality. Although the idea of an Ip Man film without the inimitable Donnie Yen may be cause for concern, stepping into his shoes is the talented To Yue Hong, the youngest ever martial arts champion from Hong Kong. Backing him are a returning Sammo Hung and Fan Siu Wong, along with franchise newcomers Yuen Biao, Huang Yi, Bernice Liu, Rose Chan, Xu Jiao, and the ever reliable Lam Suet.

“Ip Man 2” sees Donnie Yen reprising his role as the Wing Chun master and all round defender of the Chinese nation, continuing the story of the great man’s life as he heads to Hong Kong following the end of the Sino-Japanese War. Director Wilson Yip and producer Raymond Wong also return, as do cast members Lynn Xiong, Fan Siu Wong, and even Simon Yam. Perhaps more excitingly, the legendary Sammo Hung lends his talents to the film, both as action director and in a starring role, offering the chance to see him going head to head with Yen as they did to exhilarating effect in “Spl”. He is joined by a number of other new stars, including Huang Xiao Ming (“The Message”) and veteran character actor Kent Cheng (who also recently featured with Yen in Wilson Yip’s excellent “Flash Point”). Unsurprisingly, the film was a massive box office hit,...

[Ip Man 2 is screening at the Fantasia Film Festival later today so we take this opportunity to revisit James Marsh's earlier review of the film.]
IP Man 2 picks up the action in 1950 as Ip Man, with young son and heavily pregnant wife (Xiong Dai Lin) in tow, arrives in Hong Kong. Ip establishes his own Wing Chun martial arts school but struggles to bring in students, and therefore an income for his impoverished family, until the arrogant, yet inquisitive Wong Leung (Huang Xiaoming) appears. After taking a thrashing, Leung signs up along with a group of his friends and interest finally blossoms for this new fighting style. However, the other martial arts schools, in particular that of Hung Chun Nam (Sammo Hung), are reluctant to let Ip simply set up shop on their turf. When Leung gets into a fight with one of Hung's students (To Yu Hong) and is subsequently held for ransom, Ip Man is forced to face Hung and barter for his release.

Fans of Hong Kong martial arts films have long-bemoaned the fact that the city seems to have let this one-time cornerstone genre slip through our fingers, never to be recovered. Save for Donnie Yen, who seems to be singlehandedly keeping things afloat, finding successors to the thrones of Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan and Jet Li has proved pretty difficult. Donnie has arguably only a few years left in him, Wu Jing has never quite fulfilled his potential as a bona fide action hero, and the same can be said for Fan Siu Wong, while the younger generation has yet to offer up a genuine "star".

Although predictably (or, better, inevitably) replaced by Mao's legacy as the main melody-themed rush towards the 60th anniversary began in full force, for a good while the favorite piece of Chinese historiography of many a film director and TV producer was the pomp and circumstance of the Tang Dynasty, with leading lights like Li Shimin and Wu Zetian carrying the flag of such exciting and culturally abundant times's glorification. For instance, the honor of essaying Tang Taizong for a second time on CCTV-1's 2007 flagship historical drama, the fascinating 贞观长歌 (The Zhenguan Era), went to Tang Guoqiang, who made a career out of playing legendary figures like Mao Zedong - last in line in the exalted flag-waving douchebaggery of 建国大业 (The Founding of a Republic) - the Three Kingdoms' Zhuge Liang and Emperor Yongzheng of the Qing.

Wong Jing goes back to the old school with “On his Majesty’s Secret Service” a truly madcap period set comedy in the classic early 1990s style. Although the master of the form himself, Stephen Chow, isn’t starring in such films anymore, there’s certainly no reason to stop making them, and in his absence, Louis Koo has stepped up to the plate, accompanied by a great cast of Hong Kong and Mainland stars including Barbie Hsu, Tong Dawei (“Red Cliff II”), Song Jia (“Curiosity Killed the Cat”), Liu Yang (“Bullet & Brain”), Fan Siu Wong (recently in “Ip Man”) and even veteran genre favourite Sandra Ng. The plot, such as it is, follows Koo as Royal Dog, an inventor and royal guard, who does his best to protect the rather useless Emperor (Liu Yiwei) and the crazy Empress (Sandra Ng) while trying to handle his feisty fiancé Faithful (Barbie Hsu...

Oh Hong Kong you’re so wacky. While a gweilo like me could never fully understand this brand of nonsense comedy there is a certain delirious joy when watching them. They’re just so out there that even without understanding them and all their cultural nuances fully they are no less entertaining. For example we have the trailer for Wong Jing’s upcoming nonsense comedy On His Majesty’s Secret Service. Though quite unlike the James Bond film of the same name from 1969 a quick search couldn’t pick up a lot of details about this film. Thus, I first found what I hoped was a description of the film to the more qualified and sanitary skills of Google Translate and this is what it came up with…
