Soap opera characters have always been a little on the outlandish side—wild exaggerations of real life personalities. And some soap actors play a part for so long, their fans can't distinguish between the person and the character.
So at the recent red carpet event Celebrating 45 Years of Days of Our Lives at the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, we couldn't help but ask the cast members how they are similar to their characters and how they are different.
See how Alison Sweeney, Ty Treadway, Nadia Bjorlin, Shelley Hennig, Molly Burnett, Galen Gering, Joe Mascolo, and other cast members compared themselves to their on-screen counterparts in this video we shot for the Archive of American Television.

In just three short weeks, Days of Our Lives will celebrate its 45th anniversary. The show went on the air on November 8, 1965. That's a lot of sand through the hourglass. And a lot of hours of melodrama—over 11,000 actually.
And in an era when it's difficult for a show to last 45 days, four and a half decades is quite an accomplishment. In fact, it's the second longest running soap ever behind General Hospital, which went on the air in 1963 and has made over 12,000 episodes.
Over the years the series has had some wildly fantastic, only-in-a-soap-opera story lines—like the 1982 Salem Strangler plot or the 1984 Gone with the Wind recreation when Bo and Hope hid out on a plantation dressed like Rhett and Scarlett. There was the 1990 Cruise of Deception when Ernesto held all his enemies captive on a ship. And, don't forget, the 1995 Marlena exorcism.

LAS VEGAS -- Court show queen Judge Judy Sheindlin has inked a new multiyear deal with CBS Television Distribution to continue with her strip, Judge Judy, and the CBS Television Stations group has renewed the top-rated court show for another two seasons, taking it through 2012.
The Judge Judy renewal was among a flurry of NATPE-related announcements made Monday, a day before the organization's annual Conference & Exhibition officially kicks off at the Mandalay Bay Resort here. A second-season pickup for game show Crosswords also is a "firm go," while ION Media Networks' acquisition of Baywatch and station clearances for Twentieth Television's Bones also were among Monday's deals.
" 'Judge Judy' is the unsung hero of syndication, consistently delivering fantastic ratings to our station partners, and we're really proud it's the only syndicated show growing year to year," CTD president and COO John Nogawski said.
The show, which launched in 1996, is executive produced by Randy Douthit and Timothy Regler.
There was further syndication news:
-- Program Partners' Crosswords is a "firm go" for Season 2 after having been renewed in 40 of the top 50 markets. The distributor has secured commitments from WNBC New York and other NBC O&Os as well as stations owned by Belo, Four Points, Gannett, Gray, Guardian, Hubbard, McGraw-Hill, New Age, Raycom, Sarkes Tarzian and Sagamorehill.
" 'Crosswords' ' ratings are building continuously and now hitting season-to-date highs," said Ritch Colbert, who heads Program Partners with Josh Raphaelson. "This renewal is a testament to our amazing production team and to the power of Merv Griffin's original vision."
Hosted by Ty Treadway, Crosswords is a half-hour game show in which five players compete against one another and the clock to solve a crossword.
"This vote of confidence from our station affiliates makes a nice start to 2008," said Ron Ward, head of Merv Griffin Entertainment and vice chairman of the Griffin Group.

Ty Treadway, best known for his role on ABC's One Life to Live and for co-hosting SoapNet's Soap Talk, has been tapped to host the upcoming syndicated game show Let's Play Crosswords.
In addition, Brennan Huntington -- who has produced, directed and/or developed programming for such networks as GSN, ESPN, MTV, VH1, Nickelodeon, NBC, Lifetime and E! -- has been named showrunner of the half-hour strip, from Program Partners and Merv Griffin Entertainment.
The companies said Treadway was "handpicked" by Griffin to host the show, putting him in such company as Alex Trebek and Pat Sajak, who were picked by Griffin to host "Jeopardy!" and Wheel of Fortune, respectively. Treadway played Dr. Colin MacIver on One Life to Live from 2000-01 and co-hosted Soap Talk with Lisa Rinna from 2002-06, during which time the duo earned three Daytime Emmy nominations for outstanding talk show host.
"Ty exudes the kind of energy that will keep audiences engaged and excited," Griffin said. "We are looking towards a long and successful association."
Meanwhile, Raymond Brune and Andrew Yani, co-heads of TV at MGE, will oversee the show with Griffin.

NEW YORK -- CBS and two of its long-running daytime dramas, "Guiding Light" and "As the World Turns", garnered the most nominations Wednesday for the 34th annual Daytime Emmy Awards.
CBS received 57 nominations, well ahead of PBS' 38 and ABC's 36, which were the only networks to receive more than 16. Syndicated programming received 53 noms. PBS received 20 nominations Wednesday and collected the other 18 during last month's Children's Emmy nominations.
"The Price Is Right" host Bob Barker, 83, who is retiring in June after more than three decades with the show, has a shot at an 18th Daytime Emmy Award with a nomination for outstanding game-show host.
The awards ceremony will be held Friday, June 15, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland and broadcast live in primetime on CBS. A Creative Arts Award ceremony will take place a day earlier.
"Guiding Light", the longest-running soap in production (it went to air on TV in 1952), received the most noms of any show with 17, while "As the World Turns" (which debuted in 1956) followed with 16. Three shows -- PBS' "Sesame Street", "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" and CBS' "The Young & the Restless" -- each received 12 mentions. ABC trio "General Hospital", "One Life to Live" and "The View" received 10 apiece.
For the first time in more than 20 years, "Live With Regis and Kelly" (formerly "Live! With Regis and Kathie Lee") didn't make the talk show or talk show host categories. This was intentional on the part of the show, which instead entered a new Daytime Emmy category of outstanding morning program. It's open to shows that air before noon. Talk shows can either enter the existing categories or the new morning-program category but not both.
Nominations for the new award will be announced sometime in April. The Emmy will go to the producers and the hosts, which means that "Today" co-host Meredith Vieira might add a second nom to go with her nomination for best game show host.
"Guiding Light", CBS' "The Bold and the Beautiful", "One Life to Live" and "Young & the Restless" received nominations for outstanding drama series. "Jeopardy", "Price" and "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" received noms in the game-show category.
Talk show nominations went to "Dr. Phil", "Ellen DeGeneres Show", "The Tyra Banks Show", "Rachael Ray" and "The View". Lifestyle program nominations went to Food Network's "Barefoot Contessa" and "Paula's Home Cooking", A&E's "Sell This House", PBS' "This Old House" and the syndicated "Martha Stewart Show".
Nominations for lead actress in a drama series are Maura West in "As the World Turns", Crystal Chappell and Kim Zimmer in "Guiding Light" and Jeanne Cooper and Michelle Stafford in "Young & the Restless."
Lead actor nominations were given to Michael Park in "As the World Turns", Anthony Geary in "General Hospital", Ricky Paull Goldin in "Guiding Light" and Peter Bergman and Christian LeBlanc in "Young & the Restless."
Game-show host nods went to Barker, Vieira ("Who Wants to Be a Millionaire"), Ben Bailey (Discovery Channel's "Cash Cab"), Alex Trebek ("Jeopardy!"), Pat Sajak ("Wheel of Fortune").
Vieira's former colleagues at "View" -- Barbara Walters, Rosie O'Donnell, Joy Behar and Elisabeth Hasselbeck -- shared a nomination in the talk-show host category along with Ellen DeGeneres, Rachael Ray, Phil McGraw ("Dr. Phil"), Lisa Rinna and Ty Treadway ("Soap Talk") and Tyra Banks ("Tyra Banks Show").
Others networks nominated were Discovery Kids (16, including one announced Wednesday), NBC (15), Kids' WB! (10), Food Network (seven), Nickelodeon (five), A&E (four), Discovery Channel (three) and two each for Cartoon Network, Fox, Noggin and Soap Net. One each went to Animania, Disney Channel, HGTV, Lifetime, MTV, TBN, TLC and Travel Channel. Warnerbros.com earned a nom.
Several of the noms, particularly in the children's categories, were previously announced.
