That moldy-peaches cliché “they don’t make ‘em like they used to” has rarely applied to anyone as much as Buddy Guy. As his former protégé Joe Bonamassa says in The Torch, a new doc about Guy, the now-85-year-old blues guitarist and singer is “the last man standing.” He really is: Guy is one of the few still-breathing blues veterans who can boast that he played behind Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters, and wowed Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton and the Rolling Stones when they were all twentysomething Brits learning the genre.

"Don't let the blues die." IFC Films has revealed an official trailer for The Torch, the groovy new music documentary about the blues guitar icon Buddy Guy. This originally premiered back in 2019 at the Chicago Film Festival, and is finally getting a release coming up this winter. As an intro: Buddy Guy is an exponent of Chicago blues who has influenced generations of guitarists including Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Keith Richards, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jeff Beck, Gary Clark Jr. and John Mayer. At 83, he remains the standard bearer for the blues, an icon determined to see the art form live on for much longer after he's gone. Enter guitar phenom Quinn Sullivan, who has been mentored by Guy since he was a young kid. This stirring documentary, amplified by electrifying musical performances, charts the guidance Guy received from the likes of Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf while observing...

Buddy Guy’s storied career and his work to share the blues with younger generations are highlighted in the new trailer for the upcoming documentary, The Torch, set to open in select theaters March 18.
The Torch, as director Jim Farrell tells Rolling Stone, was inspired by a pact that Guy made with one of his mentors and predecessors, Muddy Waters: “Last man standing, don’t let the blues die.” To that end, the film does dig into Guy’s biography, but it also showcases all the work he’s...

Atlanta -- Buddy Guy knows that blues music isn't the taste of today's youth, but the Chicago guitar legend wants to show directors at radio stations and aspiring musicians that the classic sound is still alive with his new album, "Rhythm & Blues."
"I'm not saying play the blues every day like everything else," said Guy, who released the album Tuesday, the same day he turned 77. "Just play the blues two or three times a week and I'll be happy with that.
Guy is looking to make a hit by infusing his down-home country blues sound with top acts from the rock and country music realm. The double album includes guest appearances from Kid Rock, Keith Urban, Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, Beth Hart and Gary Clark Jr.
Guy, who toured with the Rolling Stones during the 1960s, said there are a few fresh acts keeping the blues sound alive with Clark Jr.

Elizabeth Taylor died today and that's sad in that somewhat disconnected way that celebrity deaths tend to be. There's very few celebrities I feel strongly enough about that when they die I feel genuinely shocked or upset; they more exist somewhere in the abstract realm where you know of them, you know what they do, what they wear, and what they sound like, who they've married and/or dated, etc., but you've never met them or interacted with them and their death won't affect your life in any significant way. However, Ms.Taylor was loved by many people who will surely miss her and they have my condolences. Here's your Wednesday night TV:
8:00pm: "American Idol" on Fox. There's another singing contest starting up soon called "The Voice" so we can add that to the pile along with "America's Got Talent" and the upcoming State-side version of "X Factor...

The rain began around late morning and lasted all day. My small umbrella came in handy. Again, we had a lot of musicians coming by to do short video interviews plus photo shoots with photographer Jeff Fasano. It's been a cool way to quickly meet a lot of artists. Brett Dennen came by. Jeez, he's tall (and a heck of a lot thinner). He'll be on David Letterman Friday, Oct 9th. I told him he should start off his appearance by announcing that he did Not sleep with Letterman. He just gave me a strange look. By late afternoon media and musicians alike were crowding into our tent to keep dry.
Ten-year-old guitar phenom Quinn Sullivan stopped in. I got a chance to catch his performance at the Austin Kiddie Limits stage. There were a lot of slack jaws from the small crowd as he blew us away...
