Ever since I first saw the original Dawn of the Dead at an all-night horror film marathon, I've had a fascination for Romero's Dead saga. I'm not big on gore but there is something about the concept of zombies that intrigues me. Every new addition to Romero's series adds something to the mythology and expands the natural history of the flesh eating living dead. George A. Romero's Survival of the Dead is no exception even though it's the least satisfying entry so far.
Survival of the Dead picks up more-or-less immediately after its predecessor, Diary of the Dead (reviewed here). It also has a direct connection to that film in its principle character, Sarge (played by Calgary-born Alan Van Sprang). The release date for George A. Romero's Survival of the Dead, on DVD and Blu-Ray, is August 24th and the DVD/Blu-Ray artwork is available here courtesy of Shock Till You Drop. No special features have been announced as of yet, but the film is currently premiering at several locations some of which can be found
(here). However, a couple of interesting trivia tidbits can be found on the film here including the fact that Survival of the Dead's story takes place only a couple weeks after the original outbreak in 1968's Night of the Living Dead (Uhm). Romero's latest revolves around a theme of tribalism, which can be seen in the trailer. As well, this project started out as a sequel to Diary of the Dead, but script changes ruled this possibility out (Uhm). In case you have not been beaten over the head enough with the film's trailer,...

George A. Romero has never made films for the sake of it. Despite the huge success and cultural impact of his Living Dead series, he only ever got behind the camera when he had something to say. As the years shuffle by, cultures change and cracks appear - cracks Romero could mine for biting(!) social commentary. This is why there were 10, 7 and 20 year gaps, respectively, between Night, Dawn, Day and 2005's long-awaited comeback, Land...
In contrast, the latest entry in his expansive zombieverse, Survival of the Dead, is the third film to be released since his return to the saga 5 years ago. The cynical would presume the iconic visionary is simply flogging a (living) dead horse – and the fact that Survival was released straight to barebones DVD (in the UK at least) would appear to support a theory of diminishing returns – but the truth is that Survival of the Dead...

The sixth zombie film of his career, George A. Romero's "Survival Of The Dead" yet again successfully reworks the genre that he almost single-handedly invented with his 1968 debut "Night Of The Living Dead". This time, splicing the undead with tropes of the western, we are transported to Plum Island, off the coast of Delaware. Set just a few days after the dead began to rise up, the film follows two rival Irish clans . the O'Flynns and the Muldoons . as they fight over how to deal with the crisis. With ageing patriarch Patrick O'Flynn (Kenneth Welsh) exiled to the mainland when he comes up against his rival Seamus Muldoon (Richard Fitzpatrick), tensions rise when he returns with a band of mercenaries . led by Land of the Dead and Diary of the Dead alumni Alan Van Sprang . who begin...

Filmmaker George A. Romero, pioneer of the 'zombie apocalypse' sub-genre, brings Survival of the Dead to life on DVD and Blu-ray on Monday, March 15.
It's Romero's sixth zombie feature, following 1968's Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead (1978), Day of the Dead (1985), Land of the Dead (2005) and Diary of the Dead (2008).
A remake of Romero's 1973 horror film The Crazies - about townsfolk driven mad by a toxin in the water supply - is now on release, with Romero as executive producer.
Survival of the Dead film tells of a rogue soldier Sarge (Alan Van Sprang) leading a band of military dropouts to seek refuge from the chaos of a zombie uprising on remote Plum Island, off the coast of Delaware.
Patriarch Patrick O'Flynn (Kenneth Welsh, The Exorcism of Emily Rose) and his family believe the only good zombie is a truly dead zombie, while rival clan the...

Packed with the scenes in which the zombies haunt the humans, the snippet also gives a glimpse at how a survivor named Patrick O'Flynn mercilessly attacks the living dead.
On a small island off North America's coast, the dead rise to menace the living. When a rebel assassinates his neighbors and friends, they banish him from the island.
Bent on revenge, he encounters a small band of survivors on the mainland and joins forces with them to return to the island and kill the flesh-eaters. But, as they get into the island, they discover to their horror the locals have chained the dead inside their homes,...

George A. Romero once went 20 years between Dead sagas. Now, just two years after he decided to chronicle a new zombie outbreak with Diary of the Dead , Romero's back with a sequel, Survival of the Dead . For his sixth Dead - and the second in a proposed four-film cycle focusing on minor characters from Diary - Romero abandons the previous film's "the zombie apocalypse will be streamed live" documentary style approach for an old-school, narrative-driven showdown between a handful of rogue National Guardsmen, two warring families, and an ever-growing number of the undead. Survival drops 'Sarge' Crocket (Alan Van Sprang) and his men in the middle of a Hatfield-McCoy-ish feud between two families on an isolated island off the Delaware coast. Patrick O'Flynn...

Survival of the Dead Written and Directed by: George A. Romero Starring: Kenneth Welsh, Alan Van Sprang, Richard Fitzpatrick, Athena Karkanis, Devon Bostick, Philippa Domville, Kathleen Munroe By its very nature, it seems like horror should be a young man's game; a genre that requires the brashness of youth in order to keep things fresh and continually push the envelope. And yet, there are all kinds of aging filmmakers out there refusing to abandon their genre roots in order to pursue a more "dignified" career path. There's something inspiring about knowing that George A. Romero is almost 70 years old, and still cranking out low budget zombie flicks like nobody's business. The thing is, when you're a living legend, you've always gotta be looking over your shoulder, because there's a good chance that at some point the students will surpass the master, so to speak. What's more, if you're constantly riding on your past successes,...
