The Brothers Sun stars Michelle Yeoh and Justin Chien have taken to social media to show their appreciation for fans and the show’s team following its cancellation at Netflix.
Chien, who also starred alongside Sam Song Li in the action-comedy-drama, wrote on Instagram on Saturday, “To all the fans of The Brothers Sun, Thank you for riding with us on this labor of love. It will take some time to digest this news, but I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your love and support for the show. Thank you for every post, tweet, edit, interaction, etc. It fills me with so much joy knowing that the show resonated with so many people. What do barbecue tongs, a pineapple, and an electric mosquito racket all have in common? In The Brothers Sun, these ordinary objects become implements of destruction in the deadly hands of Taiwanese triad gang killer Charles Sun, played by Justin Chien.
His impromptu arsenal includes rolling pins, golf clubs, and a rusty wrench — unsurprising for a man whose proclivity for creative violence earned him the name Chairleg. (Spoiler alert: That name is Not related to his carpentry skills.)
The stone-faced assassin can fight anyone, anywhere, whether it’s masked ninjas in a Korean spa or dinosaur-suited brawlers at a children’s birthday party. But behind these on-screen antics, there’s a team that brings the action to life.
“Our stunt coordinators, our choreographers were pretty stunning,” said Academy Award winner Michelle Yeoh, who plays exiled crime family matriarch Mama Sun.

When The Brothers Sun co-creator Byron Wu first conceived his story about a Taiwanese American immigrant family hiding their triad past in the suburbs, he knew exactly where such characters would live: the San Gabriel Valley, the Asian American enclave just east of the city of Los Angeles.
“It’s a hidden gem of Los Angeles,” said Wu, who lived in the Sgv’s Hacienda Heights when he first moved to L.A., in the press notes for the Netflix action dramedy premiering today, Thursday. The region’s underrepresentation in media appealed to him and co-creator and co-showrunner Brad Falchuk, and in addition to explicitly setting the story in the Sgv (younger son Bruce attends the fictional Cal State San Gabriel, characters carry grocery bags from Taiwanese American supermarket chain 99 Ranch), much of the series was filmed on location there.

The Asian American experience will be different from person to person. And although many on-screen depictions highlight the more universal and timeless topics, such as generational gaps, cultural estrangement and racism, Viet Nguyen and Chris Dinh’s 2015 horror-comedy Crush the Skull instead focuses on its protagonist’s utmost dilemma; he and three other robbers inadvertently break into a serial killer’s house and then become trapped. Yet beneath the movie’s plot-driven exterior lies an overlooked but important example of Asian representation.
In Hollywood movies from both the past and present, Asians have a tendency to be the supporting character rather than the lead. And if they’re lucky, they may be given an occupation other than a doctor or a scientist of some kind. In more problematic cases, the Asian character is rooted in Orientalism or a product of Yellow Peril. Mister Wing from the original Gremlins, played to the max by Keye Luke,...

What would happen if “Glee” cutthroat cheer coach Sue Sylvester met ditzy “Party Down” actor Constance Carmell? Well, according to Jane Lynch, the performer behind both characters, the two would actually get along quite nicely.
“I think they’d be fast friends,” Lynch told Variety at the Season 3 premiere of “Party Down.” “Constance is not the smartest person in the world, but she’s confident in her own goodness. And she has great self-esteem, and deep down inside Sue Sylvester does not. They would be a great…good cop, bad cop. They could do a comic cop show, but I would have to play both characters, and it would be a lot more. Wouldn’t it be great, though?”
The original “Party Down” series, which debuted in 2009, depicts struggling actors working for a Los Angeles catering company as they await their big break. The reboot catches the stars a decade later,...

Of all the shows Mike Flanagan and his production company Intrepid Pictures made for Netflix – The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, The Midnight Club, and the upcoming The Fall of the House of the Usher – the Christopher Pike-inspired The Midnight Club was the only one that was designed to be an ongoing series. The finale left the story wide open to continue… so of course Netflix went ahead and cancelled it. But Flanagan had said that if the show wasn’t renewed, he would go online and spill all of the details on what they had planned for season 2. True to his word, Flanagan took to Tumblr to reveal the Midnight Club season 2 plans soon after Netflix confirmed the show is over.

If it's one thing Mike Flanagan knows, it's his horror. To be honest, though, I really expect nothing less from a person who was born in Salem, Massachusetts (Jealous!). He's had spooky vibes in his bones from birth. Perhaps most well known for his Netflix projects like the supremely creepy 2018 series "The Haunting of Hill House" (an adaptation of the Shirley Jackson novel of the same name) and last year's incredible "Midnight Mass" about Catholicism, sobriety, and vampires, Flanagan has proven he has what it takes to make scary stories for the screen. His films have also garnered much love and attention over the years — I, myself will never forget the time I watched "Hush" in a heavy metal-themed bar and felt true paranoia for the rest of the evening — and he's got even more hair-raising projects coming down the line with "The Season of Passage" based on a Christopher Pike...

Mike Flanagan typically shies away from jump scares in his horror, but he’s breaking all the rules with Netflix’s “The Midnight Club.”
The premiere episode of Flanagan’s latest series, co-created with Leah Fong, just set a Guinness World Record for the most scripted jump scares in a single episode of television.
“The Midnight Club” is available to stream now on Netflix.
The episode that earned the distinction, “The Final Chapter,” clocks in 21 jump scares in rapid succession during a very J-horror inspired tale. Flanagan and his creative team were presented with a certificate by a Guinness representative for the accomplishment.
Flanagan told Deadline in a statement, ““I thought, ‘We’re going to do all of them at once, and then if we do it right, a jump scare will be rendered meaningless for the rest of the series.’ It’ll just destroy it. Kill it finally until it’s dead,...

Plot: At a hospice with a mysterious history, the eight members of the Midnight Club meet each night at midnight to tell sinister stories – and to look for signs of the supernatural from the beyond.
Review: It probably goes without saying that at this point, people are going to watch The Midnight Club simply because Mike Flanagan’s name is attached to it. After the acclaim for The Haunting of Hill House, Flanagan’s The Haunting of Bly Manor was met with a slightly less enthusiastic welcome. But, Flanagan’s Midnight Mass was a masterpiece of storytelling. If the pattern holds, The Midnight Club would be a weaker entry into the horror maestro’s oeuvre of shows. Luckily, I am glad to say that the series has broken expectations. The Midnight Club is nothing like any of Flanagan’s previous films or series but impresses nonetheless by combining an original...

Plot: Inspired by the original hit Swedish novel and film, the series centers on Mark (Bichir) and his daughter Eleanor (Baez), whose lives were changed 10 years earlier when she was turned into a vampire. Locked in at age 12, perhaps forever, Eleanor lives a closed-in life, able to go out only at night, while her father does his best to provide her with the human blood she needs to stay alive.
Review: It is amazing to me that in the 18 years since the titular novel was released, we are about to get our third version of Let the Right One In. After the acclaimed Swedish film in 2008 and Matt Reeves’ well-received remake two years later, Showtime’s take on the vampire story by John Ajvide Lindqvist deviates the most from the source material to create a unique blend of the narrative you may be familiar with combined with conventions of many other television shows.

Nobody's telling horror stories quite like Mike Flanagan right now. His films and TV shows are equal parts heartbreaking and terrifying. His characters are often holding onto deep-seated emotional wounds, many of which are brought painfully to the surface in the face of some monstrous threat or supernatural danger. Even when he's adapting the works of literary titans like Stephen King and Shirley Jackson, Flanagan carefully re-works and re-purposes the source material, making it firmly his own.
His latest Netflix series, "The Midnight Club," once again sees Flanagan adapting someone else's work, this time that of Christopher Pike's 1994 young adult horror novel of the same name, with "Once Upon a Time" alum Leah Fong serving as the show's co-creator. Flanagan was among the young readers who took to Pike's book upon its release and he's been hoping to adapt it to the screen ever since. With its premiere...

“One of the big things we assumed was that the younger viewers could handle scares,” Flanagan tells Empire, indicating that the terror of his latest series hasn’t been toned down for a younger audience. He says of Pike’s work in general, “He wrote some pretty advanced stuff for his younger readers, and it was not at all uncommon for his teenage characters to die, pretty shockingly. Exclusive: By the time the Nexstar Media Group’s long-in-the-works 75 acquisition of the CW finally closed earlier this month, it was the height of pitch season, when broadcast networks buy scripted projects to develop as new series for next season.
On the morning of the August 15 deal announcement, Nexstar toppers said that, under the new ownership, the CW would be going for broader and cheaper programming, including syndicated fare acquisitions, with the goal to make the network profitable by 2025.
Since then, sources tell Deadline that CW brass have reached out to the creative community, including taking agency meetings, to lay out their buying strategy going forward and tell everyone that the network is open for business.

Riverdale might be coming to an end, but The CW isn’t planning on saying goodbye to the Archie Comics universe just yet, as the network eyes Jake Chang, a new series from Daniel Dae Kim’s 3Ad. According to Deadline, the series comes from writer Oanh Ly and writer-director Viet Nguyen (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) and centers on the forthcoming Archie character Jake Chang, who will make his comic book debut in July 2022. Much like Riverdale, the series is described as a “soapy, noir thriller teen drama set in the world of Archie Comics.” The Asian-American-led mystery drama follows the 16-year-old Jake, a private investigator navigating the racially and socio-economically diverse worlds of his gentrified home of Chinatown and the elite private high school he attends. A new Archie Comics-based drama is coming to The CW, TheWrap has confirmed.
“Jake Chang” — set in the same universe as its predecessors “Riverdale” and “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” — hails from Oanh Ly and Viet Nguyen, who worked on the latter series, Daniel Dae Kim’s 3Ad, Archie Comics and Warner Bros. Television.
The official logline for the series is as follows: “‘Jack Chang’ is an Asian-American–led mystery following a 16-year-old private investigator as he navigates the racially and socioeconomically diverse worlds of his ever-gentrifying home of Chinatown, and the elite private high school he attends. The show will blend soapy teen drama with the neon noir aesthetic, all while flipping nearly every Asian stereotype — honor, martial arts, destiny, lineage, parental sacrifice — on its head.”

Exclusive: With Riverdale coming to an end after its upcoming seventh season, the CW is eyeing another soapy, noir thriller teen drama set in the world of Archie Comics. Jake Chang, which is in development at the network, comes from writer Oanh Ly and writer-director Viet Nguyen, who both worked on the Archie Comics-based Chilling Adventures of Sabrina; Daniel Dae Kim’s 3Ad; Archie Studios; and Warner Bros Television.
Jake Chang is an Asian-American–led mystery following a 16-year-old private investigator as he navigates the racially and socioeconomically diverse worlds of his ever-gentrifying home of Chinatown, and the elite private high school he attends. The show will blend soapy teen drama with the neon noir aesthetic, all while flipping nearly every Asian stereotype—honor, martial arts, destiny, lineage, parental sacrifice—on its head.

Thanks to the wonderful folks over at The CW, we're able to do exactly that. They released a press release for episode 10, which features a brief teaser description. To get things started, CW's press release revealed that episode 10 is entitled, "The Getaway." Episode 10 sounds like it will feature some pretty interesting and intense scenes as the Legends are on the run again! Constantine helps them out. Nate , Zari, Nora and Gary work together and more. "Then 'Killer Frost' (Danielle Panabaker) steps in to help with the plan. Meanwhile, 'Joe' (Jesse L. Martin) eases back into work and 'Nora' (Jessica Parker Kennedy) isn't happy about the way her dad plans to stop Cicada..."

Normally, we see superhero shows dispatch of their big bads during their season finales. In the case of The Flash, Reverse-Flash, Zoom, Savitar and the Thinker were each dealt with in the 23rd episode of their respective seasons. But when it comes to Cicada, it looks like he may exit a little earlier than his predecessors.
I first thought this to be a possibility once the network released the official synopsis for “Failure is an Orphan” a few weeks ago. And now that the first promo for said episode has debuted (seen at the top), I feel like that suspicion has been validated in some sense.
Of course, the producers could just be yanking our chain, but I’m not sure how much more there is to explore with the Cicada character. Plus, it also looks like the overarching narrative is about to transition to a different antagonist, that perhaps being Eobard Thawne.

Love him or hate him, Cicada has proven to be quite the omnipresent threat on The Flash this season. And though he’s chalked up more losses than, say, the Reverse-Flash or Zoom, the team at Star Labs have yet to find a way to definitively deal with him.
Actually, that may change next week when the gang finally put the finishing touches on the metahuman cure in the oddly titled “Failure is an Orphan.” And though my gut tells me they’ll fail in their attempt and this thing will be dragged on until the season finale, you never really know when a curveball will be thrown. Therefore, we can’t rule out this confrontation being for all the marbles.
Offering us a look into the crystal ball now are a dozen photos taken from said installment, each of which can be viewed in the gallery below. Fortunately, they...

If I were to make any observation about The Flash‘s current big bad, Cicada, it’s the he’s less a thorn in the side of the Star Labs crew and much better at racking up losses before escaping at the last second. To use a pro wrestling term, he’s more of a “jobber” than Reverse-Flash, Zoom, Savitar and the Thinker ever were.
Well, if all goes according to plan, Cicada’s going to get that metahuman cure being worked on by Cisco and Caitlin since the midseason premiere. Here, take a look at what awaits us in the bizarrely titled “Failure is an Orphan” after we have time to come down from the King Shark-Gorilla Grodd fight:

In an age when people are far too used to blasting through entire seasons (or series) in a weekend, it’s a pleasure to celebrate the concept of the great episode: a concise bite of storytelling that functions as its own narrative as well as a part of a larger whole.
Last year’s list was 25 episodes, but expanding this list to 30 became necessary given the incredible scope of television to be considered — across all platforms, there was too much to celebrate. Some of the series below represent the year’s most significant programs, while others may not have made IndieWire’s best-of lists, but deserved recognition for what they achieved within individual installments. From soul-deep despair to giggle-inducing joy, the range of TV in 2018 covered all corners of the human existence.

One thing that makes a shared continuity such as the Arrowverse so wonderful is that not only does it yield those massive multi-series crossovers each fall like Crisis on Earth-x, but it means there’s also room for intermingling here and there on a smaller scale. Thus, you may see characters from Arrow making guest appearances on The Flash and vice versa.
Speaking of which, those two series will again be overlapping before long as Arrow‘s David Ramsey will be headed back to Central City for a brief stay in this season’s penultimate episode chronicling the adventures of the Scarlet Speedster. Granted, this isn’t the first time Dig has stopped by, but the dynamic shared between him and Barry Allen is always guaranteed to bring a few smiles.
So, now that this mashup of sorts is one week away, the network feels comfortable enough to release images promoting it.

This loss will hit the Scarlet Speedster hard over the rest of the season, too, as evidenced by this new synopsis for “Think Fast,” the penultimate episode of The Flash season 4.

In a matter of hours, the moment that many of you have been waiting for will arrive when Kid Flash finally boards the Waverider and Keiynan Lonsdale cements himself as a series regular on Legends of Tomorrow. Having already established himself over on The Flash, he’ll become the next to have used another Arrowverse series as a springboard to the time traveling ensemble show.
Actually, we’ve slowly seen Wally West become integrated into the series over the course of the past few weeks as he forged a friendship with Rip Hunter. If anything, the season finale of Legends of Tomorrow will be a star-studded affair, to say the least. I mean, not only will we bear witness to the returns of both Jonah Hex and Jefferson Jackson, but none other than John Constantine will be putting in an appearance as well!
Already, we’ve seen the charismatic demonologist turn in a memorable guest shot in the recently aired midseason premiere, sharing his words of wisdom and having a surprise “shag” with Sara Lance in the process. All things considered, it made for what I felt to be this season’s finest episode thus far.
Now, it’s since been revealed that Constantine will return for episode 3×15 in a matter of weeks, but it’s all the more comforting to hear that the folks over at ComicBook.com having been able to confirm with Warner Bros. that he’ll be included in the season finale as well,...

If we as superhero fans have learned anything, it’s that the lives of the characters we love are never easy. Go figure!
To further complicate matters, Damien Darhk and company are now in the wind with several Totems, even though the Waverider crew now have the Earth one in their possession. Still, the next few weeks will see a mad dash made by both sides as the other elusive artifacts are to be discovered.

Although our earliest impressions of the current season of iZombie were overwhelmingly positive, not even we could foresee how well thought out it would end up being. With nine episodes now being behind us, it’s become apparent that the producers have put much planning into the current run, possibly making it the strongest the series has had to offer thus far.
For example, characters that may otherwise seem innocuous may come back to play a significant role a few episodes after being introduced, be it in either that week’s unique murder mystery or in the overarching narrative. From what we can tell, next week’s episode, “Return of the Dead Guy,” continues to get to the bottom of the case involving the dominatrix who met her demise not long ago. Considering that they keep revisiting this thread, it may have something to do with whatever causes Peyton to land a better job,...

Working with both Agent Bozzio and looking into Suzuki’s death meant that Detective Babineaux has also been getting closer to that realisation. The last two episodes have put both Bozzio and Babineaux’s investigation on the radar of Liv and Blaine, while the latter has begun dealing with a number of threats to his business, while Major’s real plan has been revealed, in an entertaining pair of episodes that bring into sharper focus the various forces converging on Liv and her allies.

The CW has released an extended promo video for next week’s brand new episode of iZombie, “Abra Cadaver.” As the title suggests, illusion is a central theme of this episode, seeing as how Liv and Babineaux will be investigating the murder of a magician. Upon consuming said magician’s brains, Liv will apply her temporarily granted skills to the investigation. The trailer focuses very little on this aspect and instead chooses to go the route of showing how Major is now trying to acclimate to her brain food induced mood swings.
On that note, the trailer frames Liv and Major’s situation to be a bit more rosy than what may actually occur. According to the episode’s official synopsis, Major “continues to distance himself from Liv.” Considering matters have been all kinds of complicated for these characters in recent weeks, I guess we’ll just have to tune...

It’S All An Illusion — Liv (Rose McIver) consumes the brains of a death-obsessed illusionist who was murdered in cold blood during a magicians’ convention in Seattle. As Liv and Detective Babineaux (Malcolm Goodwin) investigate the case, she uses her new skills to help narrow down the suspect pool. Meanwhile, Blaine (David Anders) gives Liv some interesting news, and Ravi (Rahul Kohli) makes a decision but things don’t end up going quite as planned. Lastly, Major (Robert Buckley) continues to distance himself from Liv. Viet Nguyen directed the episode written by Justin Halpern & Patrick Schumacker (#206). iZOMBIE continues with more brainy adventures! From the executive producers of Veronica Mars, the series stars Rose McIver (Power Rangers R.P.M.) as Olivia “Liv” Moore, a medical resident on the fast track to a perfect life … until she’s turned into a zombie. But Liv finds her calling — and an endless supply of food...

Winner of the inaugural “Nightfall Award” at the 2015 Los Angeles Film Festival —an accolade bestowed upon the festival’s best horror or "midnight" film— Viet Nguyen’s feature directorial debut “Crush The Skull,” is a hilarious, thrilling hybrid of a heist film and a gory, old-school slasher flick. The screenplay, written by Nguyen and one of the film’s stars Christopher Dinh, skillfully balances comedic moments with frightening, unexpected twists and turns. Nguyen’s direction also adeptly brings many of funny and fear-inducing scenes to life, an effect no doubt bolstered by the excellent performances of a stellar cast that includes Dinh, Tim Chiou, Katie Savoy, Chris Riedell, Lauren Reeder, Walter Michael Bost, Leonard Wu, Jerry Ying and Lincoln Hoppe, in a film reminiscent of other comedy-horror hybrids such as Eli Craig’s “Tucker & Dale vs. Evil” or Drew Goddard’s “The Cabin in The Woods.” Read More: L.A.
