With one swing of the bat Tuesday night in Arlington, Texas, Aaron Judge is now baseball’s new (legitimate) home run king.
The New York Yankees slugger established — without debate — an American League record for most homers in a season with the 62nd home run, passing the mark fellow Yankees great Roger Maris set in 1961. Judge tied Maris’ mark on Sept. 28.

New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge belted his 62nd home run of the season on Tuesday evening, setting a new, all-time record for the American League.
Judge’s milestone dinger came in an away game against the Texas Rangers, in the first inning opposite right-hander Jesus Tinoco. With the homer, the outfielder eclipsed the 61 mark set by Yankee great Roger Maris in October 1961.

New York attorney general Letitia James started the week with a 250 million civil suit against the Trump Organization September 21, alleging years of fraudulent business practices. She ended her week on another controversial note, albeit one of much less national importance: She’s calling on Apple TV+ to make September 23’s New York Yankees game available for all New Yorkers to watch without a paid subscription. Specifically, to watch it on local Yankees-focused cable channel Yes.

New York Yankees star Aaron Judge is poised to make history this week as he chases Roger Maris’ elusive home run record.
Judge slammed home run number 60 Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium, putting him within one round trip shy of Maris’ record of 61 long-balls in a single season. That record was set back in 1961, and as stood as the Major League mark for 37 years.

Aaron Judge continued his pursuit of baseball’s (legitimate) home run record Tuesday night when the New York Yankees outfielder hit his 60th home run of the year, tying him with Babe Ruth’s mark and putting him within one long ball of matching Roger Maris’ Yankees and American League record.
Maris’ sons Roger Jr. and Kevin were on hand at Yankee Stadium Tuesday night for Judge’s 60th homer, which kicked off the team’s improbable comeback from a four-run 9th inning deficit to win 9-8 against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The year was 1998. Google was incorporated. Mark McGwire broke the single-season home run record. Viagra was approved by the Fda. And Outkast — two rappers named André 3000 and Big Boi from Atlanta, Georgia — dropped their incredible album Aquemini, featuring the iconically laid-back track, “SpottieOttieDopaliscious.”

The show, which aired in syndication was created by Ferraro and Dan Carr, matched a cast of amateur athletes against each other as well as against the show’s gladiators.

The Madden franchise and I go way back. I poured a lot of fifth-grade free time into Madden NFL 97 for the Super Nes, and I can still hear that edition’s chiptune menu music in my head when I think about the series.
But, I have to be honest. For all the Madden games I’ve owned over the years — give or take 15, by my count — I’d trade them all for a high-quality arcade-style football experience.
Quality is highly subjective when we’re talking about a video game. For you, quality arcade football might be EA Sports Big’s NFL Street franchise, which released three titles annually between 2004 and 2006 before taking its streetball and going home. Or maybe you checked out 2017’s Kickstarter-funded Mutant Football League from Digital Dreams Entertainment, a way-out-there unlicensed experience featuring monsters with parody names like Bomb Shady, Wham Neutron, Sven Rottenburger, and Baker...

It’s the jarring thought many face each year on Emmy nominations day as shows receive their just plaudits in the noms: what happened to that great show I was just watching? The one everyone’s talking about right now. Why isn’t it nominated? It’s easy to forget that Emmy’s eligibility window comes to a close on May 31, ruling out from consideration any shows that premiere in the gap between June 1 and today’s nominations announcement.
Last year, the pre-noms head-scratchers were Emmy favorites like Stranger Things Season 3, Big Little Lies Season 2 and Euphoria, which all appear in this year’s nominations as a consequence of their June/July 2019 bows. And this year’s field is especially compounded by the global pandemic, which has led to the longest first phase for Emmy in recent memory. Rarely in recent memory has a TV show been so propitiously timed as “The Last Dance.” The 10-episode documentary series about the Michael Jordan-era Chicago Bulls premiered in May, weeks after the coronavirus pandemic caused the shutdown of all major live sports events, leaving fans bereft.
Into that void slipped “The Last Dance,” turning five straight Sunday nights into must-see events for large swathes of audiences quarantined at home. Over the course of its run, “The Last Dance” averaged 5.6 million viewers. And in seizing the moment, it’s becoming emblematic of a wave in sports documentary programming that has been building for years.
“It’s a funny time to celebrate any project and pat yourselves on the back, but I will say, I think it was the perfect project at a really specific point in time in our history,” says Libby Geist, vice president & executive producer, ESPN Films and Original Content.

For the last four decades or so, Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game has been preceded by the Home Run Derby. The sport’s best(-ish) sluggers step to the plate and launch long ball after long ball into stands of “ooo”-ing and “ahh”-ing spectators. While watching towering shots threaten to shatter the lights of the stadium makes for fleeting entertainment, the problem with the Home Run Derby is that the grandest of long balls only occur in the wild. Home runs are best appreciated in the context of a game, which often gains added meaning from a season-long marathon, or even a 100-year championship drought.
Look at Kirby Puckett’s 1991 World Series walk-off shot that set the table for a Twins’ title, or Kirk Gibson’s one-legged Game 1 bomb that, in his only plate appearance, launched the ’88 Dodgers to a pennant, or even Kyle Schwarber, the greatest...

"Watching those two guys - it was poetry." ESPN has debuted the first official trailer for a baseball history documentary titled Long Gone Summer, another impressive ESPN "30 For 30" feature film offering from the big sports network. Director Aj Schnack takes viewers back to the landmark 1998 baseball season – its tremendous highlights, massive impact, and undeniable complications. Mark McGwire of the Cardinals and Sammy Sosa of the Cubs competed against each other in the 1998 season to beat the home run record. With a musical score composed by Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, the doc film is a journey back through time that recalls how "seismic and emotional the story was – even as the legitimacy of the accomplishments at its center would later be called into question." Sadly, it was later discovered both of them used performance-enhancing drugs, but this still was an exciting and wild time in baseball's past. Check out the footage below.

ESPN will continue its Sunday night programming to fill the void left by the absence of live sports by airing three films in its documentary series “30 for 30” after the conclusion of the Chicago Bulls docu-series “The Last Dance,” including stories on Lance Armstrong, Bruce Lee and the steroid scandal that surrounded Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire.
The films “Lance,” “Be Water” and “Long Gone Summer” will air on ESPN on Sunday nights after “The Last Dance” ends and will be available on ESPN+ immediately after their premieres. Both “Lance” and “Be Water” made their premieres at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year.
First up is “Lance” on Sunday, May 24, a two-part film directed by Marina Zenovich (“Robin Williams: Come Inside my Mind) that grants new access to the disgraced cycling champion, and the second part of the film will air the following Sunday on May 31.

The history of baseball on film is as rich and diverse as the players who have stepped onto ball fields over the last 150 years. The first baseball movie dates back to the silent film era with the 1915 dramedy Right Off The Bat, according to Baseball Almanac, and spans to the present day where a streaming service released The Unauthorized Bash Brothers Experience, a “visual poem” from The Lonely Island about former Oakland A’s stars Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire. You won’t find another sport with that kind of range.

Andy Samberg is set to host and executive produce Quibi’s tiny food competition series “Biggest Little Cook-Off.”
In the show, the comedian-actor-singer-writer will oversee a showdown between two top chefs who must battle to create the most delicious single bite of food — like spaghetti and meatballs on a plate the size of a dime or sushi on a single grain of rice.
The absurdist conceit of the show echoes that of “Floored,” Quibi’s dance-competition show hosted by YouTube star Liza Koshy in which the contestants must navigate a moving dance floor.

It takes a certain amount of cachet for a comedy group to make a visual album parody centered on two Bay Area sports figures from the late ’80s. But not only did The Lonely Island pull off the concept, they turned it into the surprise Netflix launch “The Unauthorized Bash Brothers Experience.”
Andy Samberg and Akiva Schaffer star as Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire, the home run-hitting stars of the decade-capping Oakland A’s squad. Co-directed by Schaffer and Mike Diva, the half-hour special is a trippy cacophony of raps about region-specific attractions, the life of an Mlb superstar, and a nimble rundown of every team in the league following the 1993 expansion.
Now that there’s been a small amount of distance from last month’s stealth drop and with the group’s upcoming tour on the horizon, Schaffer and Samberg talked on Vulture’s Good One podcast about what their next project might be.

During the late Eighties and early Nineties, Oakland A’s sluggers Mark McGwire and Jose Canseco shot a bunch of steroids and crushed a ton of homers and dubbed themselves the Bash Brothers as they embodied a new kind of mullet-bro excess in sports. The duo would go on to break sacred records (McGwire), date Madonna (Canseco) and generally play a huge role in signaling an unfortunate transition from baseball’s coked-up, free-wheeling New-York-Mets-trashing-a-plane era to the dark dawn of A Rod. Comedic trio The Lonely Island have returned with a 27-minute Netflix special. Billed as a “visual poem,” The Unauthorized Bash Brothers Experience envisions a universe where baseball superstars Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire recorded a rap album in 1988.
Mike Diva and Akiva Schaffer directed the special, which stars Andy Samberg as Canseco and Schaffer as McGwire. Canseco and McGwire were known as the Bash Brothers during their seven-season run together playing for the Oakland Athletics. The nickname was inspired by their response to homeruns: bashing each other’s forearms. Years later,...

The Lonely Island — the comedy rap trio of Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone — dropped a surprise new album and an accompanying short film at Wednesday night.
And it’s not just any album, it’s basically their version of Beyonce’s “Lemonade.”
The Lonely Island’s latest album is “The Unauthorized Bash Brothers Experience,” in which Samberg and Schaffer play (for some reason) Oakland A’s sluggers Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire respectively in a goofy, ’80s-themed “visual poem.”

If you’ve been following along with season 14 of Top Chef, you’ve seen the high-intesenity fights (we’re looking at you John Tesar and Katsuji Tanabe) and challenges that are more stressful than ever (like staying up for 24 hours to roast a pig!). But throughout it all there was one constant that was always there to mellow us out (and give us a laugh), chef Sheldon Simeon.

The Padres were kicking ass and taking names! Literally.
With episodes like Beanball (formerly known as Double Switch) Pitch may make a baseball fan out of me yet!
Pitch Season 1 Episode 3 gave us more background on Ginny via flashbacks and better insight into Al, Oscar, and Frank. There was slick backroom scheming, a hookup, a brawl, an unexpected bromance, hilarious one liners, and loads of sports action!
There isn't much to complain about. It was the strongest episode so far, of a show that just keeps getting better!
Let's get that hookup out of the way, shall we?
I like Amelia and Mike individually. Hell, I don't even mind the two of them together. I can see why the two of them would be drawn together. They both have their fair share of baggage and are a bit, emotionally damaged, for lack of a better word.

The interview highlights are broken down by “Background and Behind-the-Scenes” and the “Memorable Quote” associated with each subject, and are often accompanied with exclusive photography by Joe Arce of HollywoodChicago.com. Four notables who just missed the...

Many saw Foxcatcher when Bennett Miller and Sony Pictures Classics premiered it at Cannes. I saw it yesterday at Toronto, and the tale about two Olympic Gold Medalist brother wrestlers who get entwined with the bizarre Du Pont family scion John is just as soul crushing when it veers from a quirky character study to tragedy. The human need that gets twisted and corroded in the relationship between Mark and Dave Schultz with Du Pont is every bit as powerful as the strange bond between In Cold Blood killer Perry Smith and Truman Capote in Miller’s first narrative film. Capote got five Oscar noms and won Philip Seymour Hoffman his Best Actor Oscar, and Miller’s follow-up, Moneyball, got six Oscar noms including Best Picture. Foxcatcher’s had Oscar buzz on it since Cannes, where Miller was named Best Director and the film was a Palm d’Or nominee with praise for Steve Carell,...

"I pitched every game in the Major Leagues under the influence of drugs," reveals Dock Ellis, the late baseball player who in 1970 threw a "no-no" (no-hitter) for the Pittsburgh Pirates while he was high on LSD. This is the story that kicks off No No: A Dockumentary, a soulful account of Ellis' life that certainly goes beyond the instantly engaging no-hitter on LSD premise. Let me put it this way: this has a soul-funky-blaxploitation vibe, with a Super Fly reference included, but it is as well a tough film about drug addiction, redemption and the not-so-pretty aspects of one of America's most beloved sports (baseball). Nowadays, it is no secret to anyone that big baseball stars like Mark McGwire, Barry Bonds and Alex Rodriguez...

Chicago – With the 2014 Major League All-Star game coming up next week on July 15th, that break is a time to reflect on the current season and your favorite team. At the “Hot Stove Cool Music” event in Chicago on June 20th, HollywoodChicago.com got in the All-Star spirit by talking with the President of Baseball Operations for the Chicago Cubs, Theo Epstein, plus baseball writer and former Espn commentator, Peter Gammons.
Hot Stove Cool Music was co-founded by Peter Gammons in 2000, and began in Boston. Theo Epstein and his family charity organization, “Foundation to Be Named Later” partnered with the event shortly thereafter, and in total it has raised more than $5.5 million dollars, creating positive opportunities for disadvantaged children and families. Cub Charities was also a co-sponsor of the night, which featured Gammons, Epstein and other Chicago talents rocking on the Cabaret Metro stage in Wrigleyville, about one block from the Chicago Cubs home base,...

There are so many sub-genres in horror. The vampire movie, zombie apocalypses, torture porn. But there's nothing more classic and purely fright-inducing than the things that go bump in the night. To celebrate this week's release of The Invoking, we bring you our Top 13 Favorite Haunted House Movies.
Is anything creepier than when your own house turns against you? You can (theoretically) get away from zombies, vamps, slashers and werewolves. But when your own home sweet home is the enemy… it's tough to recover from that.
We have some great Honorable Mentions to start off with. Fantastic director James Wan really seems to have a knack for the haunted house movie as he has one entry on the list itself and also gets a nod for Insidious, a creative look at the inner, an outer, workings of a haunted house. A Haunting in Connecticut was impressive as, in addition to the actual haunting going on,...

Today marks exactly two decades since the unforgettable attack on figure skater Nancy Kerrigan, arguably one of the most shocking sports scandals in history. On Jan. 6, 1994, a man struck her leg with a metal pole just ahead of the Us championships, and her rival, Tonya Harding, eventually came forward to say that she, her ex-husband, and her bodyguard were behind the attack. The incident marked one of many scandals to rock the sporting world, as several famous athletes have fallen from grace thanks to performance-enhancing drugs, including Lance Armstrong and Mark McGwire. Others have found more original ways to scandalize the nation and sometimes capture the attention of the entire world. Who can forget the endless supply of cocktail waitresses who came out after Tiger Woods's infamous Thanksgiving fight with his wife? No doubt some of sports' scandals have entertained the public, but often the very serious nature of...

Just like apple pie, McDonald’s, bald eagles and Beyoncé, baseball is the American way. Once upon a time (read: the 70s-90s, mostly), the Great American Pastime was routinely celebrated in movies like Major League, A League of Their Own, The Natural and, of course, Field of Dreams and Angels in the Outfield (people naturally love baseball ghosts). In the present day, the baseball craze has died down somewhat, possibly due to the fact that the sport hasn’t had a huge, Sammy Sosa/Mark Mcgwire-style showdown in years to get amped over. Recent, serious baseball-centric films like Moneyball and 42, which told the story of Jackie Robinson, have seen success, but there hasn’t been the same wave of feel-good sports flicks that Bobby and his Little League team could go catch after practice together. Now, there’s a film coming down the pipeline that is attempting to fill that void. Here...

Chicago – The long goodbye of tainted cycling athlete Lance Armstrong continues – after all the victories, “Live Strong,” the multiple denials of cheating and finally the confession that he lied. Oscar winning documentary maker Alex Gibney is the latest to take on this legacy of dishonesty, in “The Armstrong Lie.”
The new film dissects the history of Lance Armstrong as he kept denying his use of performance enhancing drugs and methods, on his way to seven straight Tour de France bike race titles (which have since been revoked). In meticulous detail, Gibney – who began the documentary as a chronicle of Armstrong’s 2009 comeback – strips back the veneer of public relations and peer protection of Armstrong. The director even talked to Armstrong himself, after his infamous confession to Oprah Winfrey that he had use performance enhancement techniques to cheat his way to those race victories.
